Chapter 6
Months Later

Months after the accident I was still visiting Sofie in the hospital. The doctors were now sure she was never going to wake up. Eli and I were starting to believe them, and secretly, so was Mom. I put her book back on the side table. I had started reading to her to make her comfortable. They said her brain waves looked normal, but in a stress state, so I tried everything to get her to calm down.
"Night Sof. I love you." I kissed her forehead. As I did, her heart rate jumped to full speed, then slowed again. I looked at her for a minute, but then just shrugged it off. But then, I saw her fingers move. I looked back up at her eyes. They were fluttering, almost opening.
I ran to the doctor, dragging him in. "Is she alright?" I asked worriedly. I couldn't stand for this to be the end. The doctor checked her vitals.
"Her heart rate is a little high…" He looked at her hand. "Seth… I think she may be waking. Hold on." He checked her levels again.
"Seth…" She mumbled.
"Sofie, baby, can you hear me?" I asked her. Her eyes fluttered open. She looked around confused. The doctor told me to be patient as they did tests and got her settled. Her eyes kept scanning the room as if trying to focus. When her eyes finally landed on me in focus, her heart rate jumped again. I held her hand as best I could. Finally, after hours she finally seemed coherent. "Baby." I spoke in a soft voice so as not scare her.
They had been giving her tiny sips of water to help her adjust to being awake. They said once she could start eating on her own, she could have the feeding tube removed. I stroked her hair gently. It was almost all back to her natural blond, and her mother had gotten her extensions carefully removed. She looked to me with those big eyes. The doctors warned me she might not be entirely aware of who I am.
"Seth." Her voice was hoarse from the tube and lack of use.
"Hi, baby. Hi. I'm here. Do you remember me?" I kissed her forehead. She tried to nod her head. "Good, it's okay, sweet girl. Your mom is coming. It's going to be alright. Oh my god, I love you so much. I'm so sorry I couldn't protect you. Of all the things I was worried I'd put you in danger with… I never thought the thing that would almost take you would be so human." She was too dazed to realize what I said. I kissed her forehead once more.
"What… Happened." She managed to ask.
I held her hand gently in mine. "Someone hit us coming out of the parking lot. Everything happened so fast."
She looked out at the green leaves of the trees in the lot. They had just started to die when she got hurt. This was starting to confuse her. "How long..?"
"It's summer, you've been out for months." I soothed.
