Security breaches seemed to be more and more common these days, Ozpin noted. He was the headmaster of Beacon, one of Remnant's four finest academies to train young men and women into future Huntsmen and Huntresses, and his school was no longer safe. Already, someone had infiltrated the communications tower, while he and his fellow professors tended to the Beacon Dance.
Now, it happened again. A sighting in the school's Forever Fall Forest, in the middle of the night, when students were supposed to be fast asleep. Of what, many did not know and the few who did know debated as to what it could have been. Now, early in the morning, Ozpin felt a little worn from the lack of sleep.
"Ozpin," the voice of a stern woman perked into his ear.
Ozpin raised his head from the pad he had been staring at for the past few minutes. "Yes, Glynda?"
His close associate and friend, Glynda Goodwitch, approached his desk, her blond hair messily tied into a bun. The woman managed to brush some dust from her wrinkled blouse and skirt before she began, "The patrols have returned from the Forever Fall forest. "
"Has there been any news?"
"I'm afraid not," Glynda said sadly. "There's not even a footprint."
Ozpin glanced at pad again, "There is something, though. One of our cameras caught this last night."
With that, Ozpin held his pad up to Glynda, showing her the image shining on it. It took her a few moments before the tall woman pushed up her glasses in astonishment. "Is that a Faunus?" she asked.
"I don't know," Ozpin said, taking back the pad, "whatever it is, it left the forest hours ago. We wouldn't find anything of importance left behind."
Glynda took off her glasses and pinched her nose's bridge, letting out her frustration of the situation in a huff. Ozpin spared her a sympathetic look. "It's been a long night. You should get some rest," he said.
Glynda did not argue and left quickly. While the door opened for her, Ozpin held in a sigh and sipped his mug. Like he said, it had been a long night. Atlas soldiers patrolled the school grounds and their ships roamed the skies, trying to keep the peace, aside from looking for a stranger.
Once again, Ozpin glanced down at the pad. On it was a figure standing right in the forest, almost exposed to the camera. Ozpin saw its purple kimono breeze as it came to a stop, looked around, then moved out of the camera. He played it again, watching the figure move, and paused to see the figure come to a stop. Now, Ozpin saw a stranger circular pattern on the back of the kimono, and sticking from underneath was a rodent-like tail.
That last one was nothing new, really, as Remnant had its half-human, half-animal Faunus living with humans, but what was surprising was how bestial the creature look. With the fur, long snout and big round ears, it looked less like a human and more of an anthropomorphic animal.
Ozpin leaned back in his seat and wondered. It might have been some offshoot or cross-breed. Whatever it was, it was intelligent enough to wear clothes and move like a human, as well as skilled enough to avoid notice. Certainly nothing like anyone had ever seen on Remnant. Lost? Most definitely. Friend or foe? That was the question plaguing the headmaster's mind.
Ozpin took another sip of his mug. Maybe he should have Qrow look into it, and–
A small creak from the other side of the room stopped the train of the thought. Ozpin paused slightly, his lips on his mug's rim. Then, after a while, he slowly put it down, and said, "I'm impressed. I didn't think anyone would have made it past the guards." No response. "Let me guess the elevator? I thought it would have been cramped."
"Actually, it was quite roomy," responded a voice that was as wise and deep as it sounded heavy, as if it was weighed down by many burdens.
Now, Ozpin turned his head to his new 'guest,' and he was surprised, to say the least. His eyes darted to the image on his scroll, then back to the newcomer on the far side of the room . The two were exactly the same.
It was quite different seeing it, no him, in person. For starters, Ozpin noted the being was as tall as himself. Three fingers and a thumb grasped the end of a green, translucent cane that rapped on the floor. As the furry head of the rat-man came into view, Ozpin took noticed of the slight limping movement beneath magenta kimono.
Injured, and still, he managed to get past security, Ozpin thought to himself.
The rat-man's whiskers rose and lowered as he spoke, "Professor Ozpin, correct?"
"Yes. And what do I owe the pleasure, Mr..."
"Please, it is simply Splinter," the rat, Splinter, offered a smile. He rested his free hand on the other that gripped his cane. "As you can tell, I am not from around here..."
"Indeed."
"... and I believe you are the only one who can help me and my... situation."
Ozpin took the request in, especially the small pause at the end, and considered his options. This 'Splinter' was certainly a strange one to come to his office. A creature that looked more animal, yet acted just as human, if nor more, than anyone the headmaster had come across in his years. Whether this was a friend or foe was another matter, one he would have to keep a close eye on. In the meantime, however...
"I see there is quite a story behind it all. Please, sit." Ozpin gestured to the other seat across his desk. "Can I get you anything? Some coffee, perhaps?"
Splinter smiled gently. "Some herbal tea would do nicely."
AN: Hello, everyone. This was just a small idea I had sometime after I watched the season 3 finale of the 2012 TMNT. Given what happened, I thought it would work here and I wondered how it would be like if Splinter, the Ninja Turtle's rat mentor, was in Remnant. I did have more planned for it, but work and other stories made me lose interest, and I thought I just leave it here for anyone to take. I hope you like it.
Raika out!
