Time was running out, Lex realized as he surmised the events that took place in the last twenty minutes.
The bald man, dressed and pressed in his best suit, took long strides down the confines of his secret, underground base. It was a place that no one, not even the world's greatest detective, Batman, could find. Then again, the caped crusader was busy with his own issues, same as Lex. After Superman killed the Joker out of revenge for his wife, a new world government took hold and controlled every bit of everyone's lives for five years.
In those five years, Alexander "Lex" Luthor posed to the public as a supporter of the world's "hero" and his One World Regime. Not only that, but he had stayed by Superman's side, advising and listening in almost every way. He had acted a friend and confidante the best way he could.
All of it, of course, was a lie.
Lex was no fool. He knew the reality of Superman and his band of so-called peacekeepers. Re-education camps, lethal force used on the tiniest of crimes, criminals carrying out the law… This peace was a joke, and that was why Lex acted as Batman's mole, digging for anything he could get his hands on, then leaking it out to the resistance fighters.
Now, things were changing quicker than anticipated. Batman, in his efforts to stop Superman of this world, had called other heroes of another world, where another, more just Justice League existed. The news had erupted mere minutes after these heroes arrival with headlines like 'BATMAN CAPTURED!'
Lex already guessed that it was not his Batman, but the other Batman from the other world. Still, time was of the essence, and Lex knew he would have to finish this charade. The question now was how soon that would happen.
Coming up to another door, Lex called out, "Mercy, ready protocol alpha-beta-zero-zero-nine."
"Acknowledged," called out a melodious voice of a woman.
The door opened, and Lex hastily went inside. The chamber was filled with various equipment taken from Lex Corps and what remained of the once-vaunted Wayne Enterprises. Computer terminals and mainframes lined up against the rusted walls in a circular pattern, surrounding a number of long, cylindrical pods. Lex approached the computer in front, and as he began typing in the commands, the AI spoke again.
"Sir, would you like to release the-"
"Negative, Mercy," he told the AI without looking away. "Store them into the vaults. Once they're in place, power down all non-essential outlets, including yourself."
"Understood, sir… Initiating protocol."
Keying in the last command, Lex took a step back. One by one, the cables detached, and the pods slowly descended into the floor. One pod disappeared, then two, then three, and so on. Identification number flashed on screen in front of Lex, informing the billionaire which pod was secured and ready. By the end, there was only one pod left.
That one caught Lex's attention the most. All the pods had been safeguards in the event of his failure and death. However, the rest willing allowed themselves to mended and sculpted into the perfect weapons necessary for their task. This one was done so without his knowledge, without being aware of what had been brought upon him. Seeing the pod brought up a swell of regret and sorrow inside of Lex as he foresaw what future he would have.
"Please, forgive me," Lex whispered as the last pod faded further into the floor and awaited its time to come back into the light…
AN: Another short preview for yet another weird crossover idea, this one between Kamen Rider and Injustice 2. I doubt this would be inspiring in the slightest, but hopefully the final product turns out alright (whenever I get it published that is).
Raika out.
