The trip to Konoha was long and tedious. Baki had expected them to run there and Gaara had never been meant for speed but he managed to keep up an acceptable pace for his team. Gaara was slightly distracted by the thoughts of Kagome drifting in his head to put much effort into a headlong rush towards the muggy forests.
When they had said goodbye at the gate, Mother had picked up the scent of salty tears. Gaara had frowned, as Mother's howls of delight began to drown out any other thoughts, and it was easier just to let her.
