Gai tensed as he watched the two interact. Gaara was clearly unstable and having a civilian, especially one that was the secretary to the Kazekage, approach him carelessly wasn't a good plan. Gai had tried to stop her, but she was a civilian, if he had tried to stop her with his strength he would have only hurt her, and that would be an even worse idea.

"Gaara, what happened?" asked Kagome. Gai snapped to attention. Kagome was getting closer to the boy and Gai could see the tensing in the boy's posture, as though he was preparing to strike. Kagome would not know how to handle this! She wasn't trained for this, not like Gai was!

"Kagome…" began the boy meekly, Gai blinked at Gaara's tone, it almost sounded repentant, "it hurts, everywhere. I'm…Mother is…"

Kagome took another step forward and Gai had to stop her, Gaara's body language screamed his intentions. Gai might not understand anything else that was going on in the room- like how Kagome kept her calm in the face of this unstable demon carrier- but Gai did understand the intentions of violence, and right now, Gaara was broadcasting his resolve to the whole room.
