The Dixon Residence, Earth, a day earlier.
The first time Rhea was brought to her room was after the hot chocolate with Lainie and the Colonel. It was Lainie who held Rhea's hand as the little girl stood at the doorway to her new room. She noticed that there were three boxes in the corner, but they were out of the way. Rhea scanned the room with her eyes - she looked at the cream coloured table with a chair, there were a few shelves in the room with thick books, then she turned her head to look at the open closet and the multicoloured hangers on the bar. She then turned her head to look at her bed, before she looked at the clean cream coloured walls. Seeing the room and all its features had Rhea experience a feeling she couldn't understand, it was as if she was having to accepting a terrible truth - that her parents and her little brother were dead and that she was the only survivor.
And that feeling, one she would in her teen years ascribe to a feeling of abandonment, further saddened her as she tightened her grip on Lainie's hand while using her other hand to wiped the tears that were starting to gather in her eyes. Closing her eyes as tears started to run down her cheeks, Rhea used her wet right hand to wipe her eyes as she let out a sob. She felt Lainie letting go of her left hand before Rhea used that hand too to wipe off the wetness on her cheeks and upper lip as she continued to sob.
"Shhh," Lainie whispered as she got on both knees and reached around the little girl before pulling her in for a tight hug, "just let it out, sweetheart. Just let it out." And the little girl sobbed in Lainie's arms.
Rhea didn't even know that she fell asleep. She didn't realize that after near thirty minutes of crying in Lanie's arms exhausted her. She didn't realize that Lainie had placed her on the bed, and then stayed with her for an hour or so as the little girl slept. Rhea didn't realize that it would be a little more that an hour later that the Colonel arrived at the door to her room with Pete, their oldest son.
"Mom?" Pete said as he walked into the room, his eyes on the sleeping child before they shifted towards Lainie who had been stroking the back of Rhea's head. Pete's eyes shifted back towards the little girl, "how is she?" He and his brothers were already informed about Rhea's cover story; the death of her parents and brother, as well as the fact that they still haven't been able to find any other blood relatives, and that she lost all her memories. They were all willing to make the girl feel welcome into their family, even if she was only staying until she got her memories back and a close relative could be found.
"I think she just realized she's alone," Lainie whispered looking down at the sleeping girl before she lifted her head and gave Pete and the Colonel a small smile. It was just then that they heard the front door open again before hearing yells of "we're home!" The loud yells, and then the slamming of the front door, caused Rhea to stir. Lainie looked back down while Pete walked down the hallway before saying that he would tell the others to keep quiet.
Lainie and the Colonel watched the little girl lick her lips while her eyes were closed, her body slightly fidgeting for a few seconds. It seemed as it she would be waking up, but she didn't. Instead, she had her mouth slightly open as she continued to sleep, her arms on the mattress as she lay on her side.
To Lainie, she looked as if she was at peace.
"Mom? Dad?" their second boy, Dave Jr said as he walked up to the door with Pete by his side. Behind them were the other two, Rob and Cameron, who peeked in to see the girl they all heard was staying with them. Cameron, the youngest, slowly walked into the room and asked in a soft voice if Rhea was okay.
"She's tired," Colonel Dixon whispered before he looked down at his youngest son while Rob quietly walked over to the side of the bed and placed his hand on the headboard, all the while DJ and Pete were at the door.
"She doesn't remember anything, huh?" DJ whispered before looking over towards his father, and then looking back at the sleeping girl. The boy couldn't even imagine what he would do if he had lost his entire family in a car crash, so when he focused on the tear stained cheek of the olive-skinned girl, he felt some pity for her.
Lainie looked back up at the Colonel and whispered, "Dave, how about you order us some pizza for dinner. I'll be right down." She then looked over at each of her boys as she said, "the rest of you wash up and start on your homework." Pete and the others nodded their head while Cameron, the youngest of the Dixon children, reached out and gently brushed his finger through Rhea's hair. At first, when the Colonel and Lainie told the children about Rhea and her situation, as well as the fact that if she didn't regain her memories then she would be staying with them, Cameron felt a little jealous. He was the one who received most of the attention, and now there was going to be a friend of the family who would be getting the attention he was getting.
It was a childish thing, and a part of him knew that. However, seeing Rhea made him feel as if he could stand to share the attention of the family with the girl. Eventually, in the future, Rhea would be close with the Dixon children - with Cameron being the one she was the closest to given how close they were in age, with Pete being the most protective of her. For now though, they were just strangers to each other.
Five hours later.
It was cold. It was so very cold. That was Rhea's thoughts as she found herself standing ankle deep in a white powdery substance that was soft but cold. Even the wind causing her hair to billow behind her as it's freezing fingers scratched her cheeks and bare arms. Rhea looked down at her buried feet and thought to herself, 'this is snow. Yes, snow.' Rhea looked back up to the barely visible outlines of a forest, obscured by the snow storm raging around her, and then back down to her feet once again while her arms crossed her body for some degree of warmth.
"Da… David!" Rhea struggled to yell out Colonel Dixon's name. Her face was already numb. She couldn't feel her lips moving as she yelled out the Colonel's first name once again.
"Lainie! Please help! Where am I?" Rhea yelled out as she was about to turn, her feet were numb so she had to look down to make sure her legs were moving. And they were… Rhea lifted her leg, turned her body, and then put her leg through an area of undisturbed snow. The hole where her leg used to be was now being filled with fresh snow.
And so, watching her legs, Rhea turned around completed and looked up. If she could feel anything on her face, she would have felt her lower jaw dropping as she stared at the sheer size and height of the ice wall in front of her. She looked up the side of the wall and then back down were the structure met the ground. She turned her head left and then right only to see the wall running onwards as far as the eye could see.
Suddenly there was a roar from above.
Rhea stepped back as she looked up at the dark grey cloud covered sky. She stared at the clouds just as the sounds of something flapping cold be heard. But she couldn't see anything with the clouds obscuring her vision.
"RAAAAWR!" Rhea closed her eyes and brought her hands over her ears.
Rhea snapped her eyes open and released a gasp. She found herself staring not at a land covered by snow, instead she found herself in a cream coloured room lying on a soft bed. She closed her eyes once again, her young mind trying to comprehend what it was she saw… and when she could put a reason behind it, rhea counted it as a strange dream.
Opening her eyes again, Rhea breathed in and took in the smell of something savoury and delicious wafting through the air, flowing into her nostrils. Slowly, She sniffled, as she slowly pushed herself up until she was sitting on the bed, the blanket still wrapped around her. For a little while, Rhea was wondering whose room she was occupying when suddenly, the memory of being told that she lost her entire family crashed into the forefront of her mind.
Rhea sniffled. Her eyes watered before she used the back of her left hand to wipe away the welled up tears. As she unfurled the blanket wrapped around her, Rhea heard a growl coming from her abdomen just as the savoury smell hit her nostrils again. She slowly moved towards the edge of the bed before hoping off, her bare feet landing on the carpeted floor. She then made her way to the dresser on the left and stopped upon seeing her reflection on the mirror. She stared at the clothes she had on – a blue coloured short-sleeved shirt and a pair of soft grey coloured pants.
She turned her head towards the door at the sound of distant laughter. Rhea walked towards the door, reached out for the knob when she heard Lainie's voice from a good distance behind the door, "yea, I'll go check up on her. You guys get the table ready, and Dave…."
"Yeah, mom?" a male voice cried out while Rhea opened the door by a fraction while footsteps could be heard coming up the stairs.
"Toss the salad!" Lainie exclaimed right outside the door as Rhea opened it and poked her head out into the hallway. She looked up as Lainie was looking back over her shoulder. Lainie then turned her head back to the front and there was surprise for a moment before she crouched down and placed a hand on Rhea's arm, "hey, sweetie. You've been sleeping for a long time."
Rhea silently nodded her head.
"You hungry?"
Rhea didn't answer. Instead, the two of them heard Rhea's stomach growl before the latter nodded her head. Lainie smiled as she stood up and reached out with one hand, how about you wash up first, and then we'll go down?" Rhea nodded her head as Lainie walked her to the washroom where she explained to the little girl what everything did. It wasn't long before Lainie waited out in the hallway for Rhea to freshen up before the child left the room, and then they walked down the stairs to the dining hall.
It was in the dining room that Rhea first met Pete. She waved at him nervously as he walked around the table and introduced himself just as the other boys walked out of the kitchen. All of them then introduced themselves to the little girl who nervously waved at them while taking a step behind and then to the left so that Lainie's legs partially blocked her from view.
That action earned her laughter from the boys, the Colonel, and Lainie. It would be later, after having two slices of what the people around Rhea called Pizza, something that wasn't familiar at all to her, Rhea was told that no one would hurt her. Rhea realized the wording was unusual, but didn't think anything of it as she continued to try and associate the Pizza she ate with memories of her parents and her brother.
But nothing came to mind. She couldn't even remember their faces, and it broke her little heart. As she cautiously ate the hot bread smothered in what she learned was cheese and pepperoni, Rhea was asked by Cameron if she really didn't remember anything about her life before the accident.
Rhea shook her head as she chewed the food while the boys glanced at each other. Lainie, who was seated next to Rhea, stroked the girl's small back while Pete said that she would get back her memories in time.
"I…" Rhea said in a low whisper, barely loud enough for the people around the table to hear it, "I don't even remember this…" Rhea lifted up the pizza in her hand, "nor do remember cheese or these… red circular objects."
"It'll come back to you," the Colonel gently said as Dave Jr took a serving of salad, "I know the boys have school tomorrow, so I was hoping that Lainie could take Rhea out to Cheyenne Mountain State Park?"
"Yeah, sure," Lainie nodded her head before looking over at the little girl, "Rhea? Up for some fresh air and sunshine?"
"Better enjoy it while it lasts kiddo," Pete said before taking a big bite of his pizza. Rhea stared confused at Pete, silently asking herself what he meant by 'enjoy it while it lasts' – she guessed the 'Kiddo' was referring to herself. But it was the words preceding that which began to worry her. And Pete seemed to sense that worry before he added, "you know, before you have to go to school."
"Oh," Rhea whispered before looking up at Lainie with a look of confusion on her face. The latter nodded her head before whispering it was a place of learning. Rhea nodded her head before she took another bite of her pizza slice while wondering what other things she would be encountering over the coming days.
'And if I do not regain my memories, then… then I suppose…' Rhea then took in a deep breath as she wondered if she would be staying in the Dixon home for the rest of her life.
The Water Gardens.
Ashara was still having trouble believing what she was told . She had her hands clutching each other as she stared out towards the ocean. She could hear the waves gently crashing against the shore, the sun still continuing its rise up the sky, the warm breeze from the ocean caressing her cheeks and bare arms while her sleeveless dress fluttered behind her. The tears that had been falling down her cheeks were now dried up, her mind trying to process what she was told not more than an hour ago.
An Hour earlier, The Water Gardens.
"Prince Doran, Prince Oberyn," Ashara said as she was helped off the carriage she travelled in by the latter, "thank you for your message of condolences on the death of my brother and my stillborn son."
Oberyn and Doran slightly bowed their head in respect before Ashara took Doran's hand in hers and kissed the ring he wore as a sign of respect and servitude as one of his Vassal subjects. She then stood up straight and asked, "why have I been called to the Water Gardens, my Prince?"
"We would like you to remain here for the week, my Lady," Doran said while Oberyn looked at the line of servants nearby and nodded his head. The women, who Ashara believed were to be her handmaidens, strode forward towards the carriage and took out three cases before carrying them away. Doran then leaned to the left and told her retinue to return to Starfall, "I will have a raven sent to Starfall addressed to Lady Allyria of the need for Lady Ashara to rest here due to her losses in the justified dethroning of the Mad King and his equally mad son."
Ashara narrowed her eyes at the pleasing tone in Doran's voice before her eyes shifted towards Oberyn who was giving each person in her retinue a pleasing smile. She wondered what was going on, she had heard from her own sources within Sunspear that both Princes were enraged at the murder of Elia and the children, 'so why…' Ashara glanced over her shoulder in realization, 'they believe someone in my retinue could be a spy for the usurper. However, I know they are mistaken. House Dayne has always been a supporter of the Targaryens. Maybe we did not approve of the Mad King, but we approved wholeheartedly of Rhaegar and Elia. House Dayne was just as outraged at the murder of Elia and her children… and now…'
Ashara mentally told herself to calm down. She told herself that the Princes were right to believe there could be spies among their Vassal's. But Ashara wondered why the need for such subterfuge from the two of them, 'Elia and the children are dead. The other two Targaryens are just a boy and a baby girl in exile somewhere in Essos… so why..?'
She waited for an explanation as her retinue turned around and began making preparations to head back to Starfall while the cases were carried away by four men. While all of this was happening, Doran told Ashara to follow him and Oberyn to his Solar – that they had a lot of things to discuss.
It would be once she entered the Solar, with Oberyn closing the door behind her but not before telling the guards to make sure no one enters the hallway, that she noticed three men standing by the window that looked out to the reflecting pools and large garden below. Once the door was closed shut, the three men stopped talking among themselves and turned around – the three of them nodding their heads towards both the Princes. Two of them smiled at her, while the third one – a dark shined man with a golden tattoo on his forehead slightly bowed his head before looking back up at her.
"Lady Ashara of House Dayne, I would like to introduce you to Dr. Daniel Jackson, Teal'c, and Colonel David Dixon."
"Hello," Ashara nodded her head at each of them.
"While we called you to offer the Water Gardens to you as an escape from the news of the death of your brother and your son," Doran said as he walked, with his cane, around the table and to the high backed chair, "there was another reason. A reason that I feel you are very uniquely qualified for… other than us, anyway."
"And this reason would be?" Ashara asked, a look of confusion on her face while she glanced over at the three men. She took in their clothes, mentally telling herself that none of what they wore were similar to clothing in Westeros. And she too had bought materials from all over the world, including the unknown regions, and she had yet to see the style of clothes the men were wearing. Taking a deep breath, Ashara turned her attention back to Doran and Oberyn.
"I cannot leave Dorne," Doran said, "and as much as Oberyn would like to leave again, I need him here to… well… cause some trouble for our newly installed King."
Ashara noted the anger in Doran's voice when he mentioned 'our newly installed king' and she couldn't help but feel relief that Doran hadn't given in to the rule of the Usurper like the other Kingdoms had. But that still didn't explain fully why she was in the Water Gardens.
"Trouble?"
"It would be best if you do not know, my Lady," Oberyn said, "but there is something the two of us need from you, Lady Ashara." Oberyn then took a deep breath while placing a hand on his brother's shoulder, "you had been Elia's best friend from childhood, and one of her closest handmaidens after her marriage to Rhaegar."
"Yes," Ashara said wondering where they were going with this line of questioning, 'these are questions to which you already know the answer.'
"So you can say with absolute certainty that you can recognize Rhaenys if you saw her again?"
"My Prince, I… have they returned her bones to us? Have they returned…"
"Can you recognize her?"
Ashara couldn't understand what was happening. By right, only the bones would have been returned.. if returned at all. Rumour had been that the bones of Elia and the children were dumped into Blackwater Bay, 'that monster didn't even give them they honour of a burial.' Now Prince Doran and Oberyn were asking her ridiculous questions, "I can, Prince Oberyn, Prince Doran, but last I heard, their bones were thrown into Black…"
"No."
Ashara stopped what she was about to say and simply stared at Prince Doran before looking at Prince Oberyn who had a look of pain on his face as he asked, "would she recognize you, my Lady?"
"I…"
"My Lady, please… this is hard on us all.. just answer the question."
"She would call me Ash," Ashara whispered as tears welled up in her eyes at the thought of the little girl laughing behind her as she chased the train of her dresses, "she would run after the train of my dress when she was three. When Elia fell ill on Rhaenys' third nameday, I fed her beets and venison stew with soft carrots. I would at times keep her with me when Elia and Rhaegar would be having dinner with the king." Ashara realized she was getting off topic before she wiped her tears and whispered, "yes, I know she would recognize me. But thinking about her brings up memories of hearing she died, along with her brother and Elia."
Doran then sighed before saying, "what we are about to tell you must remain a secret until such a time comes when we are prepared to make a move against the Lannisters and the Baratheons."
"I.. I do not understand, what is happening here?" Ashara asked.
While Oberyn reached into a pocket on the inside of his silk coat, Doran asked Colonel Dixon to explain everything. Ashara turned her head towards the man standing in the dark blue clothing with multicoloured pieces of cloth on his chest.
"Lady Ashara, we're not from this world," the Colonel said, and Ashara narrowed her eyes in confusion, "and no, this is not a joke. We are not playing you or the Princes for fools."
"My Lady," Oberyn handed her a piece of paper… a paper that once she had it in her hands, saw that it was no ordinary paper. Ashara couldn't make out the type of paper it was.. but that didn't matter. What mattered was the picture, and not a painting, on the piece of paper.
It was Rhaenys who was in the arms of another woman. A stranger. A woman who was not Elia or herself. Her eyes went back to the girl who looked like Rhaenys…. She was so much like the girl who used to call her Ash that it could have been a twin. However, there was something in her heart saying that she needed to listen. That this was too big of a coincidence.
"Months ago," the Colonel began as Ashara's hands trembled while holding tightly to the paper, "an ally of ours…"
Water Gardens, now.
Rhaenys was alive. Ashara had left the Solar with tears in her eyes before she ran as fast as she could down the hallway and into the bright sunlit sky over Dorne. The hallway led her to where she was standing now, looking out at the ocean. The very same place she and Elia used to stand when they wanted to listen to the gossip of the day.
"She's healed, but she doesn't remember anything… including her name, her parents, relatives… anything," the Colonel had said before Ashara ran off, "since she's in danger here, whether she remembers who she is or not, she'll be staying with my family on Earth. We'll look after her and treat her as part of our family."
"But we feel its best if someone from her past could come with us for a day and just be around her," Daniel said, "the hope is that she'll start remembering who you are and…"
"I… I'm sorry.." It was then that Ashara had run off, tears streaming down her cheeks. That was an hour ago.
'That was embarrassing of me,' Ashara thought to herself when she looked over her shoulder, and then turned at the sight of Oberyn walking towards her with his lips pressed together. She lowered her head and said, "I am sorry, Prince Oberyn. I did not mean to embarrass you or Prince Doran by my inappropriateness."
Oberyn waved it off before saying, "you did take it slightly better than I. Believe me when I say that I I thought it was a jest. When I learned it was not, I was angry."
"Do you believe it is a jest now, my Prince?"
"I believe it to be true," Oberyn said, "Rhaenys is alive, but on another world far away from any of her enemies." Oberyn then sighed, "we need you to see for yourself that it really is Rhaenys, Lady Ashara. We believe them, but… but there is this need to know for ourselves. And Elia trusted you above all others."
Ashara closed her eyes and then took in a deep breath.
"I will, my Prince," Ashara said with a feeling of renewed purpose, "I will see Rhaenys for myself once again. And, as the off-worlders have suggested, I would like to be the one who teaches Rhaenys of her heritage when she is seven namedays."
Oberyn nodded his head before saying, "come, they are waiting for you." Ashara took the offered hand, and then the two of them walked towards the main building.
