Planet Designated P4M-328.
So simple.
That's what the mission to P4M-328 was supposed to be; a simple mission. It was earlier that morning that the MALP sent back pictures from the great hall the Stargate was located. Daniel and Faith looked through the pictures and found that the images sent back were very interesting. These were the same pictures shown to General Landry during the briefing an hour later, before SG-1 was due to leave for their new mission. It was thanks to Daniel and Faith that their original mission was changed to this one.
The images from the MALP did show that the hieroglyphics on one of the four large columns in the, what was thought to be from the pictures, great hall. On the pictures, it could be seen that there was a section of the wall was out of order and from different dynasties. It had gotten Daniel and Faith confused as they tried to make sense of the symbols. It would later that the both of them believed the symbols were a code. That was the only reason the symbols could be out of order. And that was further evidence that there could be evidence in regards to the existence of the 'treasure' they were seeking on '328.
The both of them took the evidence to General Landry during the briefing, with Vala correctly guessing that the misplaced hieroglyphics were a code. Once the mission was approved, Faith and the others went off to change into their tactical gear. While the others headed for the Gateroom once they were done, Faith went over to see Willow in the infirmary.
And then, once she was updated on Willow's condition, Faith headed for the Gateroom. Her P90 attached to the vest she was wearing, Faith walked into the Gateroom and nodded her head at Colonel Mitchell and Colonel Carter before taking her position in front of Vala and Teal'c. With the Gate already activated before Faith got to the embarkation room, it was only a matter of SG-1 walking up the ramp and then through the Stargate to their destination.
Stepping through the Stargate on the other side of the wormhole, the team found themselves in a dimly lit room where, as the pictures indicated, there were four columns of hieroglyphics. The team stepped down the pedestal holing the Stargate upright and then turned on their flash lights once the wormhole disengaged.
"Faith and I will take some high-res pictures of these hieroglyphics," Daniel said as he handed a camera to the Slayer who walked over to the closest column and started taking pictures while Danie and Vala headed off to the other adjacent column. IN the meantime, Colonel Mitchell said that he would be taking Teal'c with him to conduct reconnaissance- he wanted to make sure that there weren't any Goa'uld or Ori.
"Maybe we'll run into a few locals who heard rumours about this treasure," the Colonel said while walking away with Teal'c down the hall, and into another corner, and then they entered another corner. And then they stopped, the Colonel had a look of surprise on his face while Teal'c tilted his head in mild curiosity. Just as they turned a corner, it seemed as if they walked out of the inside of an Ancient Egyptian chamber, to a modern hallway complete with cases containing artefacts and fluorescent lights overhead. "What the hey?" The Colonel whispered as he cautiously walked on the floor, his boots landing softy on the floor as he took one step after another with Teal'c by his side.
In the meantime, while the confused Colonel walked into the modern lit hallway, Faith was taking pictures of the second column. In addition, Daniel and Vala were together as the former took pictures while Vala talked to Daniel about Ansel Adams. Faith couldn't help but chuckle at Vala's incessant questioning. Faith took a shot off the hieroglyphics on one of the pillars when the flash from the camera illuminated something on the far wall. It reflected the light and caught Faith's eyes as she put the camera away. Walking towards the far wall, Faith narrowed her eyes and took out her flash light. Turning on the beam of light, Faith pointed the device upwards and shone it on a circular device with a red light in the middle.
Faith had a quizzical look on her face while wondering to herself, 'that looks like smoke detectors in the… wait a second,' Faith then looked over her shoulder at Daniel and Vala while her flashlight was still on the device. "Hey guys," Daniela and Vala turned towards Faith, who motioned for them to come over to where she was standing. "She then turned around once the both of them were standing next to her and pointed at the device, "that doesn't look like any Goa'uld device I've seen before."
The confused Daniel walked closer to the wall while Faith and Vala where using the flashlights to light up the topmost edge of the wall and the ceilings.
"Ummm… Daniel?" Vala said as she stopped on a section of the ceiling. Daniel and Faith liked up and aimed their flashlights at the section of the ceiling. And then they stared at each other with Vala saying out loud what they were thinking, "is it just me or is that a sprinkler?"
"When do the Goa'uld use sprinklers?" asked Daniel before aiming the beam form his flashlight to the device on the wall, "or a, well, I guess it could be a smoke detector?"
"A very safety minded Goa'uld?" Vala asked with a questioning look at Faith and Daniel who were looking back at her, both with an eyebrow arched. Vala then shook her head before saying, "yeah, I can't believe that came out of my mouth either."
"So where are we?" Faith asked after a chuckled as she aimed the flashlight at the columns behind her and then at the DHD while Daniel and Vala rushed past her to get to the DHD. "These hieroglyphics really make no sense," she whispered.
"We thought they were a code, and…." Daniel shook his head after pressing down on one of the symbols on the DHD. He pressed it again while Vala rushed around to the rear of the device and crouched down. She was searching for the rear access panel while Faith strode over to Daniel's side and aimed the light onto the surface of the DHD. Faith reached down with her free hand and pressed some buttons, as did Daniel, but none of them lit up.
"Okay," Daniel whispered looking up at Vala who stood up with a stunned look on her face.
"Val?" Faith asked. The two of them stepped a few steps back as, to their surprise, Vala lifted the rear of the DHD off the floor and tilted it towards them. Faith and Daniel watched helplessly as the 'buttons' clattered onto the floor. Vala then placed the DHD back onto the floor and said it was a fake. Faith crouched down and picked one of the 'buttons' up with her left hand, "it's plastic."
It was just then that the group heard the sounds of hurried boots coming towards them. Faith, Daniel, and Vala turned towards the hallway to see Colonel Mitchel and Teal's heading towards them. The Colonel telling them in a hushed tone, "pack it up, we need to…" It was then that the Colonel caught himself when he saw the DHD 'buttons' on the floor.
"What has happened," Teal'c asked standing next to the Colonel while Vala was taking pictures of the stunned look on the Colonel's face with a camera. She was tilting it at all angles while Daniel told the Colonel and Teal'c that the DHD was a really well made replica.
"First," the Colonel said pointing at Vala who was still taking picture of him, "cut that out." Vala pouted as she put down the camera and then put it into her pocket. In the meantime, the Colonel said that they were not in a tomb.
"We are in a museum," Teal'c said as Daniel, faith, and Vala then looked at each other. And then back to Colonel Mitchell and Teal'c once again.
"That explains the sprinklers and smoke detector," Daniel said to the surprise of Colonel Mitchell while Teal'c looked up as Faith aimed her flashlight on the ceiling where the Colonel and Teal'c saw the small sprinkler heads. "And if we're in a museum, then that explains the jumbled-up hieroglyphics."
The Colonel then sighed before rubbing his forehead. He then looked up and said that the DHD being a replica was a problem, "there's a party going on. We need to..."
"Oooh, what kind of party?" Vala asked as a smile came on Faith's face.
"The kind we don't invite us to, and…"
"Given that we can't exactly dial out, we should consider mingling with the natives," Faith explained while Vala wrapped her arm around Faith's, "and what better place to do that than in a party."
Vala could see that Colonel Mitchell was going to say something, but she spoke up first trying to allay his worries, "when we haven't check-in after six hours, General Landry will dial this planet. And when he does, we'll tell him what happened and ask him to send over a naquada generator and a laptop with a dialling program."
"And in the meantime, we could go to the party," Faith begged.
"We would fit in," Daniel admitted as the Colonel turned his head towards him, "plus, it's obvious that the Goa'uld did have a presence on this world and…"
"Shhhh," Faith whispered as she tilted her head. She then looked at the Colonel, Teal'c, and the others, "hide, someone's coming."
The group turned off their flashlights and then rushed to hide themselves behind the side of the pillars that were facing the Stargate. Faith was with her back to the pillar with Vala by her side. Teal'c was standing behind another pillar, while Daniel and the Colonel were hiding behind two other pillars. They looked at each other before looking around their covers upon hearing 'click-slacks' of heels hitting the floor. This was soon combined with the voices of a male and female. The group, still behind their covers, watch as a man and woman, both wearing what seemed to be formal clothes, rushed into the chamber. The man gently pushed the laughing woman to the wall and started to kiss her passionately.
Faith shook her head and turned to Vala who was grinning as she watched the couple kiss. She pulled Vala back to cover when the unknown woman gently pushed the man away and said, "Don't tell Sylvana, she is like a sister to me."
Hearing that, Faith and Vala looked at each other, the Slayer silently mouthing, "ouch." She then turned and looked at the Colonel who was across from her, and then back at Vala.
"Never," the man said before proceeding to kiss her passionately again. Faith rolled her eyes upwards and then looked at the two from behind her cover. She couldn't call the Colonel or the others on what they should do, especially since one of the man's hands were going down the waist of the woman to her upper thigh.
"This is going to be so awkward," Vala whispered as Faith turned to her. Faith then looked back to the Colonel who unclipped his P90 from the front of his vest, and then crouched down to gently place it on the floor. The Colonel then sensed he was being watched and looked up to the quizzical look from Faith. He put a finger to his lips, silently indicating for her not to make a sound. The man then stepped out from behind his cover and signalled Teal'c and Daniel hiding behind the other two pillars, to not make a sound.
"Excuse me," the Colonel said with authority in his voice. The kissing couple were startled as they jumped back and stared at the frowning Colonel who was walking towards them, "there's no one supposed to be here in this exhibit. We're adding some new exhibits to this… well, exhibit," the Colonel pointed at the MALP, and then at the DHD, "and someone already came through here and ruined this device. I have to ask you both to leave so that we could get this done. And the new additions are meant to be a surprise for t he public so… you know… no telling the guests what's going on."
"I…" said the man as he nervously looked at the girl, and then back at the Colonel.
"I won't tell anyone I saw you two here," the Colonel said which and hands on his hips, "now get out of here and back to your party. Move!"
"Sorry, sorry," the man nervously said as he rushed down the hallway while holding onto the girl's hand. She was dragged away, but not before turning to say 'thanks' for keeping their secret. Once the two of them were gone, the Colonel gave the other an "all clear".
"Nice," said Faith nodding her head, "so, the party?"
"It's a formal wear party," the Colonel said after turning around to face the team, "we'll stick out like sore thumbs if we try to mingle in our uniforms."
"Awww shucks," pouted Faith while Vala sighed. Daniel chuckled at their reactions while Teal'c turned to look at the Stargate.
"The power source form the MALP will not be enough to dial the Stargate manually," he said before turning to Daniel and then others, "we have no choice but to remain here over the next six hours."
"We stay together then," the Colonel said nodding his head, "when the General dials in, we'll ask him for the generator and a laptop. And then we'll go back, and since this is a First Contact situation, we'll send another MALP later and ask the people here if they want to meet."
"And for now?" asked Daniel.
"We stick together, and… well… stay here."
Planet designated, P1Z-276.
Major Charles Taggart was the leader of SG-17, a recon team that was sent to this planet as a routine meet and greet. The dialling computer spit out the address for the planet and, as a result, SG-17 was assigned the task of Gating to the world and performing a 'meet and greet' with the local population, if there were any that is. The MALP was sent through the Stargate and upon finding no life signs in the immediate area, it was believed that there could be a town or village in the distance out of the MALP's sensor range. It was then that SG-17 was approved for the mission. It would be an hour and a half after SG-1 left for P4M-328 that SG-17 assembled at the foot of the ramp in the Gateroom. Once they were ready to move out, Major Taggart was the first one to walk up the ramp and then through the Gate, followed by Captain Lewis Emers, Lieutenants Hoesome and Proctor, with Dr. Clara Wells rounding off the team.
After walking through the event horizon and finding themselves on a new world, the group followed Taggart down the stairs of the Stargate pedestal under the midday sun, their shadows falling on the knee length grass all around them. It was Taggart who approached the MALP while the others looked around at the vast fields of grass, pockmarked with bushes and wide canopied trees over rolling hills as far as the eye could see.
"General Landry, sir," Taggart said as he looked into the MALP's camera, "SG-17 has arrived safely."
"Good," General Landry said as he looked up at the Major's face on the screen above him, "check-in every twelve hours, Major."
"Understood, sir," Taggart said nodding his head, "Taggart out."
After the red light on the left side of the camera faded, the Stargate disengaged. The Major walked around to the rear of the six-wheeled vehicle. The Major looked down at the rectangular metallic box while the others walked over to him. Taggart then reached down and opened the case as a smile appeared on his face at seeing the drone. He reached for the five inch tablet and handed it to Emers before tuning back and then taking out the two pound device He placed it on the Stargate pedestal, it's four blades, one on each leg ready to lift the device up into the air. The Major then stepped back down from the pedestal and took the tablet from Emers, he activated the tablet and was greeted with custom software to control the drone.
The Major pressed a tab on the screen, and the words ''Connection established' blinked in green on the tablet's screen. Once the connection was established, the Major pressed another tab and the camera activated. The group saw themselves on the tablet screen while the Major then pressed yet another tab. Now, the blades started to spin with a low hum as it slowly rose into the sky.
"Okay," the Major whispered as he looked at the screen while Dr. Wells looked up at the drone, and the others were scanning the immediate area with the eyes. They had their weapons unclipped and by their sides while the Major watched the images on the tablet. The drone rose high into the sky where the attached camera a column of wispy smoke rising towards the sky. "Looks like we have something," Major Taggart said.
Dr. Wells and the others walked over to him and stared at the screen.
"How far away is that, sir?" asked Hoesome.
"A little over ten kilometres away," the Major said while Dr. Wells groaned.
"The eggheads at Area 51 and DARPA could have given us a fancy ATV or something," Proctor pointed out as he turned towards the direction of the smoke, "that's a lot of tall grass. And it's hot."
The Major pressed a few tabs on the screen before the drone zoomed off silently towards the wispy smoke. He then placed the device inside his vest's left-side compartment and turned towards his team. He then reached into his right trouser pockets before pulling out a folded cap which he promptly flicked open with his hand as he scrunched his face against the heat beating down on them and said, "ladies and gentlemen… well, lady and gentlemen, move out. We have about two hours to head to the village where we'll hopefully meet up with the locals. And hopefully, no Ori."
"We can hope," Dr. Wells, a five-foot-tall dark haired and dark-skinned woman, said as she looked up at the Major from the tablet she was carrying in her hand. She then raised her tablet screen at the Major and said that there weren't any life signs in a radius of five meters. "Which is kind of unusual."
"Nothing?" asked Proctor while Hoesome was checking his P90 before raising his head to scan the area visually, "not even birds? Or… anything?"
"Nothing," Wells said as she looked back at the screen and shook her head before looking up towards the distance. Turning to the left, she nodded her head at the Major with a scowl on her face before continuing, "it could be anything. Maybe there are no birds or… yeah. We should ask the villagers."
"Yep," the Major added after fixing his cap. He then took out the tablet from his compartment and looked down at the screen. He then looked back up to see the location of the drone in relation to where they were standing, and then he stared back down at the screen. He pressed a few tabs on the screen, and their GPS systems beeped. Hoesome and the others took out their GPS devices and saw their current position on the screen, as well as the route being taken by the drone.
"Sweet," Emers said nodding his head as her put back the device in his vest, as did the others.
This mission was not just a meet and greet, it was also a field test of new technology developed at Area 51 and DARPA using reversed engineered technology gathered from off-world; one of which was the drone; it was wirelessly connected via subspace transceivers to the tablet so that it could be controlled from vast distances. "lets go."
The Major heard about what happened to the Groundhog, and he wished the vehicle did not explode when it was tested the previous day, 'it would be so useful right now' thought the Major as he led the team through the tall grass. 'Yea, I'm not telling Proctor he right. Nope. Now way.' The Major chuckled while wondering about the 'I told you so' look that Proctor would give him if he admitted that a vehicle of some kind would have been useful. Especially since the sun was pounding down on them.
As they strode at a medium pace, Dr Well was checking her tablet – another new device with a small hump along its upper edge which contained a variety of sensors capable of detecting life signs and even scanning any individual for injuries, sickness, or disease. It was still in the experimental stage since the device could only run life-sign scans at the moment. A combined Earth and Orbanian collaboration, the device was being tested by various other teams as well… each on testing either life-scans or the personal medical scans. Major Taggart and his team were testing the life-sign scans for this particular mission.
"Doc." The Major said as he looked over his shoulders at Dr. Wells who was walking next to Hoesome, "anything on the scanners?"
"Nothing."
"Is it even working?" asked Emers while Proctor, who took up the rear, chuckled at the glare that Dr. Wells gave the young Captain. Emers turned his head to the middle-aged scientist and shrugged his shoulders before stating, "that thing's supposed to be experimental. I mean, it may not scan for any life-signs."
"Which means that we could be surrounded," Proctor said as he scanned the area visually. He focused on the thick trunked trees and the knee high green grass swaying in the warm breeze, "A few good places for people to hide for an ambush."
"This thing is working," Dr. Wells said nodding her head as she stared at her screen while the Major stared at his tablet screen which had the drone's camera giving him a real-time view of the village. In the meantime, Dr. Wells continued talking, "It's detecting us, but no-one else."
"Well," the Major said looking up from the screen and over his shoulder at Dr. Wells, "at least we know it's working." The Major then looked back down at the screen and whispered, "but I'm getting no movement in the village." The drone was hovering over the village for the past few minutes but even if the sound of its rotating blades gave off a gentle whine, the Major thought to himself there should still be movement on the surface.
"Doesn't the drone have a thermal camera?" asked Dr. Wells as she strode forward until she was walking next to the Major. She peered at the screen on the drone controller while the whole group continued their trek towards the village. Dr. Wells saw the village; several thatched roofed houses laid out with a river running not a kilometre behind it. There was a column of smoke rising from what looked to be the remains of a bonfire; as if there was a celebration judging from the streamers that were still hung from poles in the center of the village. The Major and Dr. Wells looked on as the poles were placed in a wide circle, with the burned-out bonfire's pile of smoking logs in the center. There were several benches and tables with what seemed to be pieces of paper or confetti on the ground.
The Major shook his head before saying that the drone didn't have a thermal camera. "Nothing's moving," he whispered looking over at the scientist next to him. Dr. Wells was curious now, the village seemed as if it could have had at least a hundred-people judging from the number and the differing sizes of the buildings. All were placed in a circular patter that radiated out from the center.
The Major and Dr. Wells knew that they should be seeing people going about their day, but the camera showed no movement. It was as if everyone knew the team was coming and decided to stay in their homes out of fear. Dr. Wells didn't know why, but she could feel a chill going up her spine underneath the hot sun as she stared at the screen.
The Major and Dr. Wells looked up from the screen and stared at each other curiously. The both of them wondered what was going on as they trod through the grass towards the village. For the next two hours, the team walked in silence- each person on the alert for anything that was out of the ordinary. The closer they got to the village, the more they smelled burned wood from the bonfire, as well as another odour they couldn't place. The Major then looked back down at his screen and issued a command to the drone to conduct a patrol of the perimeter.
Looking up at the sky as the drone took off and began its patrol of the perimeter, the Major then put the tablet back into his vest pocket and unclipped the P90 from his chest. They neared the entrance to the village- and there were still no people around that they could see. The team stood side by side at the entrance as they stared at the buildings, all of which had their doors closed.
"Okay," whispered Proctor as he stared at the houses and the distinct lack of people, there weren't even sounds of children, or even murmurs from voices frightened at the appearance of strangers. He remembered the movies where strangers walk into a town and every man, woman, and child would run into the building and lock the door behind them. He recalled the scenes were windows that were open would be quickly drawn shut by men and woman out of fear. Those scenes reminded hi of the village in front of him, except there were no people anywhere, "This is kinda creepy."
"Like the beginning of a 'C' grade horror movie," Hoesome added as the Major frowned while he turned his head at his team, and then back at the sight in front of him.
"Doc," the Major said turning his head to the woman as he held his P90 by his side, "you're with me." The scientist nodded her head before the Major leaned forward and told the rest of his team to spread out, "radio if you find anything… anything at all."
"Yes, sir," said Hoesome, Proctor, and Emers before they spread out into the town leaving the Major and Dr. Wells, who was looking down at the scanner in her hand with a curious look on her face.
"Still nothing," she whispered as the Major leaned sideways and stared down at the screen which showed five red dots; the members of SG-17. It showed two dots standing still – Dr. Wells and Major Taggart; and three other dots spreading out into the village – Proctor, Hoesome, and Emers. Dr. Wells looked up at the five foot six inch tall Major and shook her head saying that there were no life signs other than their own.
The Major nodded his head at the scientist who kept the tablet away and took out her Zat, "let's go find out what's going on." Dr. Wells then nodded her head at the Major's statement before the both of them moved into the village of thirty buildings.
Emers walked out towards the southern side of the town and began to investigate. His boots fell onto the hard ground as he walked cautiously while his P90 was held downwards. He tried to look in through the windows of one of the buildings, but all he could make out in the interior of the buildings, lit only by the sunlight streaming in through the windows, were tables and chairs. At least from his view. Frowning, Emers walked over to the front door and knocked while identifying himself and his team.
However, there was no answer as he leaned to one side and stared through the window. 'No movement. Not even a shadow.' Emers leaned back to the door and knocked once again. Still no answer to the knocks. Scratching his head, Emers wondered if he would have luck in the other buildings, so he moved off. IN the meantime, the others were having no luck in finding any other people.
Proctor got on his radio after he tried to open a door, only to find that it was locked from the inside. But there were no visible people even when he shone his flashlight into the dimly lit buildings through the windows, "is it just me or does this place creep anyone else out?"
"It's just you," the Major said on the radio as the other men snickered while Dr. Wells was staring at her life-signs tablet with eyebrows furrowed in confusion. All the building she and the Major walked past, some of which were homes, had no life-signs. Not a single human was present. It was a few minutes later that the Major and Dr. Wells reached the center of the town and saw what could have been a festival atmosphere at one time; there were the multicoloured streamers, which they had seen from the drone footage, hanging from one pole to another. Then there were the overturned tables and chairs with bowls of food spilled onto the ground. The both of them saw what looked like lanterns crushed into the ground, and then there was the smell… a very noxious odour… they couldn't place it as they covered their noses.
"Come on, this way," The Major said as he led Dr. Well to the area he thought the smell was emanating from.
While the Major and Dr. Wells investigated the smell, Proctor was standing in front of a tall building. He guessed it was two stories from the staircase he saw while peeking in through the window. He then walked to the front door, and knocked. But there was, as usual, no response. He reached for the door knob, expecting to find it locked just like all the others he twisted, and turned the knob clockwise. This time, to his surprise, the knob turned.
"Proctor to all units, I have one of the doors opened. It the fourth building to the north-east," Proctor said, "I'll leave the door open. And… Oh god!" Everyone stopped what they were doing and stood up straight and alert while the Major radioed Proctor and demanded to know what was happening. "The smell, sir," Proctor exclaimed in a muffled voice as he stumbled backwards from a rush of warm air that carried a horrific smell, "It…. It like something's been dead and rotting for years and… oh God it's so acrid." Proctor stumbled to the left and tried to take a breath of fresh air, but the whiff he took in contained more of the disgusting smell. The young man rushed away from the building and hurled his breakfast onto the ground.
"Proctor?" asked the Major through the radio while Dr. Well walked to one of the poles, and then stopped.
"Major!" the scientist said as she crouched down while staring at a puddle of clear slime. She quickly covered her nose from the odour it was releasing and looked over her shoulder while calling out, "I think I found something." Once the Major heard from Proctor that he was alright, and that he was going to take a break for a while to get back his bearings. The Major nodded his head before asking Emers to meet up with Proctor.
"Understood, sir," Emers said as he rushed off to find his teammate.
While Emers was heading to Proctor and Major Taggart was heading towards Dr. Wells, Hoesome was passing by another building, a two story building, when he suddenly heard a scratching sound against the window from inside. He spun around and narrowed his eyes at the glass which looked in to the dimly lit home; there were tables and chairs at the window, with a hearth and a kitchen he could make out in the rear. Hoesome took a few steps forward and stared at the left side of the home and could barely make out a fireplace and he shifted his eyes to the set of stairs that led to the second floor.
Hoesome thought the sound he heard was just his imagination playing tricks on him. He stepped back and was about to turn away when he caught site of a ripple on the floor, followed by a dull scratching sound from behind the door. His heart raced as Hoesome walked to the front door- his brain was telling him that he needed to inform the Major that he may have found something, or someone. But he ignored that procedure while thinking that there was someone behind the door who maybe needed help; especially since the entire town seemed to have been abandoned.
Opening the door, not only did Hoesome find nothing, he had stumbled back and gagged when a disgusting stench rushed out. He stumbled sideways onto the floor and guessed correctly that this must have been what Proctor must have taken in through his nostrils when he opened a door.
Hoesome was on his knees his back to the open door behind him, as he reached for his radio. His hand was nearly at the device when he heard a 'splot' sound after the sound of what seemed like the flapping of wings. It was coming from inside the home as he lowly got to his feet and turned around. With one hand blocking his nose, and the other hand holding up his weapons as he inched closer to the open door after getting to his feet, Hoesome said, "hello? Is anyone there?"
All thoughts of calling the Major were moved to the back of his mind as he felt his heart racing. Thoughts went through his mind at the speed of light at what could have caused the entre village to be empty. Shaking his head, the young man stepped into the house through the door, and then he heart a louder 'spolt' sound. Narrowing his eyebrows together, the young man looked down and saw a ripple spread outwards from the pool of pinkish goo he stepped into as he walked in.
"What the…" he mumbled as he lifted his foot and saw the goo dripping down. Hoesome was about to step out when he looked up straight ahead and heard the flapping of wings, as well as a 'schreech' sound. He looked around while still covering his nostrils, his P90 held up facing outwards while he took another step into the home. Hoesome looked back down at the ripples travelling through the goo which covered the entire floor.
While the perplexed Hoesome was looking around as he heard another screech, Emers reached Proctor, and helped him up to his feet while Dr. Well and the Major were still at the center of the village, the man crouching next to the dark-skinned woman who reached into her vest pocket and took out a pen. She reached down with the tip and inserted in into the puddle of thick, viscous goo, and then slowly pulled it out and towards her.
"What the hell is that?" asked the Major with a disgusted look on his face as he got a whiff of the odour from the goo.
"I have no idea," a very curious Dr. Wells replied as she eyed the goo sticking to the tip of her pen. In the meantime, while the scientist and the Major looked up to see several other patches of goo that were nearly soaked into the ground, Hoesome heard another 'screech' sound and the fluttering of wings from the stairs. Hoesome moved his hand away from his nostrils and reached for his radio while taking in controlled and measured breaths through his mouth. But whoever way he breathed, the odour of that rotten meat was still affecting him.
"Major," he whispered while carefully walking through the goo covered floor, "I'm in one of the buildings.. it… it's a home I guess and.."
"Where?" the Major said with eyes wide open when Dr. Wells pointed her pen at specks of grey floating in the goo, "Hoesome, where are you?"
"It… it looks like bone," Dr. Wells said examining the cream coloured hard substance, when she suddenly looked up at the Major. They heard a bloodcurdling scream from the radio, it was Hoesome with the sounds of screeching and flapping wings in the background.
"Hoesome! Hoesome!" the Major yelled as he and Dr. Wells got up just as they heard weapons fire from an area to the west of where they were. The both of them took off, with the Major ordering Proctor and Emers to meet them in the West section of the village. Suddenly the weapon sounds were gone, and everything was quiet.
Well, quiet except for the sounds of boots hitting the ground as the Major and Dr. Wells ran to where they thought the sounds of weapons fire came from. In the meantime, Proctor and Emers were yelling into the radio for Hoesome as they dashed towards the direction of the faded weapon sounds.
"Hoesome! Hoesome! Do you copy?!"
It was silent. All silent as they rushed to the sounds of gunfire. The drone was still patrolling the town from the air, and its camera caught sight of the group of humans finding the house after a few minutes. Just before the camera was about to go out of range as the drone made another sweep, over the town, the device caught the Major and the others- with weapons out- entering the home. It all took a few seconds before the door slammed shut… and the audio sensors on the drone took in sounds of gunfire and horrific screams from SG-17.
All of a sudden, the drone found itself crashing into the ground. It hit one of the thatched roofs on the way down, and it then flipped over as one of the propellers were broken off. The drone crashed close to the house where the rest of SG-17 entered. The camera was still recording while aimed at the entrance four doors away. It was the last to witness a screaming and blood covered Dr. Well, rushing out of the house after pulling the door open.
The drone was the last to witness what looked to be a mass of snake like flying creatures twisting and pulsing in the air as it exited the house. The creatures were smoking as they screamed and screeched flying after the scientist.
Just before Dr. Wells reached the drone, the creatures flew around her and started to feed. The camera saw her scream as she turned around while waving her arms trying to get the creatures off her. She then turned and ran the other way screaming, "Help!" The camera could only watch as the mass of what looked like thousands of creatures tore through her before pulling back her now silent and bleeding body back into the house.
And the door slammed shut. The camera continued to run for the next six hours before the drone lost power.
TBC.
