So this has got to be one of the longest chapters I have ever written. Enjoy, I have been working hard on this and edited it down as much as I could, and I didn't want to split this into two parts.
Chapter 31: Birthday Surprises
Carlos paced back and forth in Logan's office. Logan has been gone for a long time now. He was worried that this was a bad sign. He didn't want Logan to lose his job over this. He knew how much Logan loved being a doctor. He hoped that everything was going well.
He heard the front door slam. He jumped and ran from the room. He saw Logan start up the stairs and pause when he spotted him. Logan stopped and leaned against the railing and looked down at him. They stood there for a minute.
"Well, the board bought it, and we are not in too much trouble," Logan said calmly.
"Define too much?" Carlos asked.
"We owe a lot of free clinic hours," Logan said.
Carlos walked to the bottom of the stairs, Logan watching his every move. He sat down near the bottom stair. He hung his head.
"I am so sorry," Carlos said, his voice small. When Logan didn't say anything, he continued. "I tried so many times to tell you at first. I knew you should know, but like every time I tried, something came up, and I chickened out. Honestly, I didn't want to ruin things between us, and it would hurt Steve too. I just...I just couldn't bring myself to do it. I realize now what a mistake that was, but we can't change the past."
Logan slowly made his way down the stairs. He sat down next to Carlos. He seemed deep in thought. Carlos waited for him to sort his words out. This was a big thing to take in. It changed everything.
"I'm sorry too. I should have told you everything the other day and not cornered you in front of Kendall and James like that," Logan said softly.
"So where do we go from here?" Carlos asked.
"Well, I know that living in the condo was very lonely, and I am not doing that again," Logan sighed.
"So the couch-" Carlos started.
"Is not meant for sleeping on," Logan said, shaking his head. "I am angry, I am hurt…I am lost and confused. I don't know what to think about all of this. The one thing I do know is that I love you, and I'm not going anywhere. I am willing to put the work in again to get past this."
"Really?" Carlos asked, looking up at Logan, shocked.
"Yeah," Logan said. He leaned in and sealed their lips together.
They parted and rested their foreheads together. Carlos felt a wave of relief wash over him. He knew he didn't deserve Logan's forgiveness, but he would take what he could get right now and earn the rest. He was willing to put in the work.
"I don't deserve this," Carlos said.
"No, you don't, but I believe that you can earn it back in time," Logan replied.
"That makes one of us," Carlos sighed.
Logan kissed him once more. Carlos leaned back, trying to speak, but Logan pulled him back for more. Carlos sighed and let it happen. This was far from over, but for now, this was rather enjoyable. He knew Logan was avoiding things, but he didn't mind.
The front door opened, and they sprang apart. Carlos looked up as Lilly and Layla walked into the house together. Both girls looked horrified. Logan chuckled as he rested his head on Carlos' shoulder.
"Ew, not on the stairs," Layla said.
"Lilly, what are you doing here?" Carlos asked.
"Regretting my visit home," Lilly said, earning a glare from him. She laughed. "Like I would miss Kyle and Leora's birthday. I was just stopping to drop off my bag for the night."
Logan stood and held a hand out to Carlos. He helped him to his feet. Lilly and Layla quickly ran up the stairs to their rooms to get ready. Logan led Carlos to the kitchen. Logan leaned against the counter as Carlos sat down at the table.
"Let's get through tonight," Logan said.
"For Kyle and Leora. It's their big day," Carlos agreed.
"Tomorrow we can talk and maybe we should make an appointment with Darlene," Logan suggested.
"Yeah, maybe she can help mediate," Carlos agreed.
—Happy Mistakes—
Kyle moved about the kitchen getting things ready for supper. Leora wanted to have spaghetti and meatballs, and Kyle had agreed with her. He and James were currently making the meatballs. Kyle was gathering all the ingredients for James while he mixed up the meat. They even had stuff for vegan meatballs for Jake. Kyle was in charge of those. Miles was sitting at the counter watching and chatting. Kyle had finally gotten away from Miri as she had gone down for a nap with Jenny. He loved her, but it seemed like she never wanted to leave his side lately.
"So how's school going boys?" James asked.
"Really?" Kyle asked looking up at James.
"I hardly see you anymore. You're always working or you're with Jared," James replied.
Kyle opened his mouth to reply but stopped. James was right. He was always so busy.
"It's going good, I can't wait to be done," Miles said.
"Any plans for college?" James asked.
"Penelope says that UCLA has some programs that I might be interested in and she's gonna show me around soon," Kyle replied.
"Yeah, and I'm looking into some film classes," Miles said.
"Really?" James asked looking at Kyle shocked.
"Yeah, I've been thinking about it, but I'm not committed yet," Kyle said.
"We applied already," Miles said quickly.
"That doesn't mean I have to go, but I am thinking about it," Kyle said.
"That's better than not thinking about it, I'll take it," James said.
"Have you heard from Jared and Leora yet? They've been gone for a long time," Miles said checking the time.
"I texted him and he said they were on their way," Kyle replied.
The three continued to chat. James seemed to be dancing around what he really wanted to say. Kyle knew he wanted to talk about his weight loss. It seemed to be the hot topic among everyone lately. As long as Miles was in the room he wasn't going to say it either. When Miles left to the bathroom, he found an opening.
"So," James said.
"Yes," Kyle said, looking up at him.
"I think we need to talk," James said slowly.
"Aren't we already," Kyle asked looking back down at the fake meat concoction before him.
"I'm just a little worried about you," James said.
"If this is about my weight loss can we not do this?" Kyle asked annoyed.
"There's nothing wrong with wanting to lose a little weight," James started.
"I don't know what's up," Kyle cut him off. "I haven't changed my eating habits. Ask Miles or Jared they will tell you. Did you not see that giant stack of pancakes I had this morning. I'm not trying to lose weight, I'm trying to gain it. I don't like the way I look. I don't like the comments I get from people at school or the random comments on Miles YouTube videos." He said.
"Maybe you should go see a doctor, make sure that everything is ok," James suggested.
"Will it get you and dad off my back?" Kyle asked.
"For a little while," James replied.
"Deal," Kyle said.
Miles returned and instantly started talking again. He had no idea what he had even missed. Kyle's phone started ringing. Miles jumped up and dug it from his pocket. He answered quickly by putting it on speaker.
"Hello, sperm bank, you squeeze it, we freeze it," Miles said.
Kyle and James started laughing too. Neither of them had expected him to say that. Laughter was heard on the other end of the phone as well.
"You were dropped on your head weren't you?" Jared asked.
"More than once," Kyle said, nudging Miles.
"Come outside you two," Jared said.
"Why?" Kyle asked.
"Please," Jared said.
"What's in it for us?" Miles asked.
"Kyle please come outside," Jared said.
"I'm a little busy right now," Kyle said looking down at the fake meat he had been making meatballs from.
"Just trust me and come outside I've got a surprise for both of you," Jared said.
"Go ahead, I can finish up in here," James said, cutting off Miles.
"Give me a minute and I'll be out there," Kyle said. He headed to the sink to wash his hands.
"This better be worth it," Miles sing-songed.
"Trust me, you will both love it," Jared said.
"Sounds kinky," Miles replied.
"You wish," Jared replied.
"It's no fun when you play along," Miles groaned.
"Keep it in your pants Miles," Kyle said as he snatched his phone back from him. "Sorry Jer, it's been awhile for him and he's at the stage where he will look at anything that moves."
"I'm right here," James said.
"Oh please the way you and dad talk, that's nothing," Kyle said.
"I gotta agree that is one of the more tame things they have said," Jared laughed.
"Let's go," Kyle said, grabbing Miles' arm. "I'm hanging up now."
The two bolted from the kitchen, before James could say anything else. They headed outside. Jared was standing by Kendall's SUV with Jill and Carly. Kyle ran up to them with a smile. He gave both a hug.
"How is this a surprise for me?" Miles asked as he gave each girl a hug as well. He missed them too.
"Well they are like two thirds of the surprise," Jared chuckled.
"What are you talking about?" Kyle asked, confused.
"Boy you two are blind."
Kyle and Miles whipped around. Jayda was sitting on the porch swing with Leora. She was grinning at the two. Kyle ran up to the porch as she stood up and accepted his hug.
"What are you doing here?" Kyle asked.
"Oh sure you can make time for Kyle," Miles said glaring at her, as he joined the hug.
"Ok I apologized for that and sent you an awesome gift," Jayda said smacking Miles upside the head.
"I thought you weren't coming home until next week," Kyle said, cutting Miles off.
"Yeah, my last shoot got cancelled because the photographer got sick. Jared and Leora got a hold of me and convinced me to come home early and surprise my boys," Jayda said.
"You were right that they wouldn't notice you," Jill said as she joined them on the porch.
"Hey Carls Gramps is in the kitchen. He's working on supper. Wanna go help," Kyle said.
"I can help!" Carly hollered as she ran inside. Leora laughed as she followed her.
"Come on Jill, let's go inside," Jared chuckled. He gave Kyle a kiss on the cheek. "Your welcome."
"Thanks," Kyle said smiling.
"So what's it like living the dream?" Miles asked as they walked into the house.
Kyle led them upstairs to his room. He jumped on his bed while Jayda claimed the desk chair. Miles sat down next to Kyle.
"Tell us, how is it living the dream," Kyle said.
"It's amazing, a lot of hard work, and a lot of business, but like I love it," Jayda said excitedly.
"You were on the cover of cover girl too," Miles said.
"I never expected to make the cover so soon, but that was awesome. My mom literally called me when she found it and we like cried and cheered," Jayda said excitedly.
"I am so proud of you for sticking it out Jay, you earned it," Kyle said.
"What about you, I heard you went gold already," Jayda said.
"Yeah, that was a little surprising," Kyle said nodding his head. "It only happened after Noah released his wedding vlog and he used like two of my songs."
"Plus Jared was a big help in getting the word out. He wouldn't stop tweeting about your album until it went gold," Miles said nudging Kyle.
"And we now have a filmmaker in our midst," Jayda said.
"I have finally found my calling," Miles declared. "I've gotten pretty good at it too and people seem to love our crazy adventures."
"I gotta agree watching you two makes me miss home though," Jayda said.
"Then come home, we miss you," Kyle said.
"I want to, but I've got a contract to finish out. Besides now is the time for me to be making contact and getting my foot in the door. Let's face it, Cover Girl is just a stepping stone," Jayda said.
"Hello, you've got one of the best in the business right down stairs," Kyle said gesturing in the direction of the kitchen.
"Oh my god, yes I need to pick his brain later. Don't let me forget," Jayda said excitedly.
"Oh I'm sure as soon as he sees you he's going to steal you away, that's why I sent Carly to distract," Kyle laughed.
"Oh that's why you did that," Miles said, turning to Kyle.
"Duh," Kyle said, smacking Miles' forehead playfully. Jayda laughed and shook her head.
"I missed you idiots so much," Jayda said.
"And we missed you," Miles said, "and he's the idiot not me."
"I think you're mistaken," Kyle said shoving Miles. Miles elbowed him back with a glare.
"Anyways," Jayda said, cutting them off. Kyle arched a brow at her in a silent question. "Tell me there is more than just a family dinner planned."
"Oh definitely, I'm sure Jared has plans and that's why we are having dinner so early," Kyle said.
"Good," Jayda said.
"Wanna kill some zombies?" Miles asked.
"Yes I will kick your ass," Jayda said.
"And I'll whoop both of your asses," Kyle replied.
—Happy Mistakes—
Leora set the tables. She had to have Jake and Adam bring in the table from the kitchen to accommodate everyone. Somehow their small family dinner turned into a big family dinner.
"Hey Le," Kyle said walking into the dining room. He was carrying a pitcher of juice.
"What up?" Leora asked.
"Pops said Grandma Brooke is almost here. She just texted him," Kyle said.
"Awesome," Leora said smiling. "Gramps?" She asked.
"Dunno, he gave pops a vague answer and said he had big news to share," Kyle shrugged.
"Number 7?" Leora asked.
"Probably, but didn't he just get divorced again a few months ago," Kyle said.
"He's always got someone on his arm," Leora replied.
A knock at the door was heard. The two bolted from the kitchen in time to see Kendall open the door and greet Brooke and Eli. Kyle and Leora squirmed past him to give them hugs.
"Grandma!" Leora exclaimed.
"Gramps," Kyle said.
They swapped and gave the other a hug. Jake and Adam walked out of the living room having heard the commotion. They gave Brooke and Eli a hug as well.
"Happy Birthday, both of you," Brooke said smiling at the twins. She held out two gift bags to them.
"Not right now," James said before the two could open the bags. Kyle and Leora slumped their shoulders. James chuckled at his children.
"Hi mom," he said, greeting her with a kiss to the cheek. "Hi dad."
"I'm not kissing you," Eli joked, earning a nudge and a smile from Brooke. It wasn't a new joke. In fact it was something Eli did every time he visited.
"So what's this big news you wanted to share," James asked as he looked between his parents. He had not seen Brooke laugh at that joke in years.
"Number 7?" Kyle asked looking at Eli.
"In a way," Eli said slowly. He glanced over at Brooke.
"What do you mean?" Kyle asked, confused.
"No way," James said as he looked from Eli to Brooke. He was waiting for them to say something.
"Well maybe I had things right the first time," Eli said simply.
"Someone pinch me. I must be dreaming," James said, shaking his head. Kendall and Kyle both pinched him. "Ow." He glared at then both.
"You said to," Kyle and Kendall said at the same time. They both looked at one another laughing.
"James honey, it's not something we planned. It just kind of happened and we relavuated things and…" Brooke trailed off.
"Nope, I don't wanna hear anymore," James said, his hand coming up to his ears.
"What he means to say," Kendall said grabbing James' hands and lowering them, "is that as long as you two are happy. We are happy."
"Shocked, but happy," Adam said nodding his head.
"Yeah, as long as you're happy," Kyle agreed.
"Hey don't want to ruin this moment, but I just heard some car doors outside. Maybe we should move this to the living room," Jake said.
Everyone agreed, and headed down the hallway. Leora opened the door as Matt, Penelope, Noah, and Roldy walked up the driveway. She greeted them with a smile.
"Sorry we're late," Noah said, running up to her and greeting her with a big hug.
"You're not late, Jared is just impatient and vastly outnumbered here," Leora laughed. She led them inside and returned to the kitchen. Penelope followed her wanting to talk to her.
"What's up?" Leora asked.
"I just wanted to get away from Ro for a moment," Penelope admitted. She helped Leora finish setting the table.
"Everything alright?" Leora asked.
"No, not really," Penelope sighed as she picked at the corner of the table cloth.
"What's wrong?" Leora asked.
"Ever since he lost the baby things have kind of been awkward," Penelope said. Leora nodded her head. "I don't know how to talk to him and he just...he avoids me. I don't know what to do."
"I can't imagine what he's going through," Leora said.
"Me either, but I don't want to lose a friend over this. Noah told me to give him some time, but like I feel weird. It's like they wanted this and I didn't. I-I mean at first I was scared and didn't want this but now, I'm like so ready to meet this little one, I couldn't imagine losing her," Penelope said.
"Her?" Leora asked.
"I think she's a girl, we won't know for a few more weeks yet," Penelope said.
"Oh my god, is anyone planning your baby shower?" Leora asked suddenly. "You have to let me! I love parties. Noah can help me too."
"Noah asked the other day and he mentioned you too," Penelope said.
"I might have put the idea in his head," Leora laughed.
"Of course you two can, but I'm sure my sister is gonna wanna help too," Penelope said.
"Deal," Leora said smiling at her.
The two finished setting the tables. Kyle and Miles exited the kitchen carrying food. Leora ran to the kitchen to help as Penelope helped the boys get things set. Leora joined Jayda helping James get things into bowls and serving dishes. James started bringing things out as well. A crash was heard from the kitchen.
"I swear to god I am gonna strangle those two one of these days," James sighed. He took off back into the kitchen. Leora followed him. Miles and Kyle were on the floor laughing.
"What happened?" James asked.
"Miles was messing around and I ran into him,at least we were only holding the salad dressing and not the garlic bread," Kyle said pointing to the bottes on the floor.
"Yeah, thank god it wasn't the garlic bread or we would be dead," Miles said looking at Leora.
"I would make sure of it," Leora replied.
"You two are something else," Jayda said as she walked over to them. She held a hand out to Miles as Leora helped Kyle up.
"It's my fault that I left you two alone," James said, picking up the rolls.
"Yeah, why would you do something like that?" Kyle asked.
"Past experience says that that is always a bad idea, I mean I have almost set this house on fire numerous times," Miles said.
"If it weren't for me you two would have succeeded," Jayda laughed.
"Yes, Miles is the one who hyped us to do dumb shit and Jayda is the voice of reason. We've been out of balance for months now Jay," Kyle said.
"Well I am here for a few weeks, so hopefully we can balance things out," Jayda laughed.
"Ok, go let everyone know that supper is ready," James said.
Soon everyone was gathered around the table talking and laughing. Kyle was stuck in between Jared and Miles as they all talked and laughed with one another. Leora was sandwiched between Lucas and James. Food was passed around and stories about Kyle and Leora were shared.
"I remember the day you two were born," James said smiling at them both. "I remember everything was so chaotic and crazy, but you two were so calm together. I remember looking over and you two were holding hands and just content with each other."
"Yeah and when they had to be separated and all hell broke loose," Kendall said.
"Even then we had to do everything together," Leora said.
"What made that stop?" Jared asked.
"Mr. Strauss," Kyle and Leora said together.
"Who?" Roldy asked.
"Our second grade gym teacher," Miles laughed.
"What happened?" Noah asked curiously.
"Well it all started at recess when Stacy Rosen tried to tell us that we couldn't always be captains of the same team," Leora said.
"To which I told that she could pick three people to be in her team and to just shut up," Kyle said.
"Yeah she then tried to pick Miles for her team," Leora said.
"I wouldn't let her, I was already spoken for," Miles said.
"Anyways she tried to tattle on us to Mr. Strauss who was in charge of recess that day and he separated her from us and let us play the way we wanted," Kyle said.
"We had gym class that afternoon and Mr. Strauss thought it would be a good idea to make us both captains of opposite teams," Leora said.
"Oh my god you would have thought the world was ending," Miles laughed.
"It was," Kyle and Leora said together.
"They were very dramatic then," Kendall laughed.
"Then? Don't you mean still are?" Jared asked teasingly.
"Do you wanna hear the story or not?" Kyle asked.
"I'll be quiet," Jared laughed as he put his hands up in surrender.
"Anyways team captains usually picked who got to go first by play rock palace scissors, and since Kyle and I are of one mind especially then, we couldn't beat each other," Leora said.
"Can confirm they tried like ten times," Miles added.
"So Mr. Strauss told Leora to go first and that's when she betrayed me," Kyle said.
"I picked Miles to be on my team," Leora said.
"And I have never forgiven her for the heinous crime," Kyle said.
"And Mr. Staurss wouldn't let me switch teams either," Miles said. "I also learned that day that kick ball can be a contact sport if you want it to be," he added.
"Contact sport?" Penelope asked.
"Oh yeah, the punishment afterwards was worth it," Kyle replied.
"Oh please I whooped your butt and you cried like a baby," Leora said.
"You were both crying when I got there," Kendall said.
"I don't sit back and take. I am not afraid to hit a girl especially if she deserved it," Kyle replied.
"This is why we don't talk about that day," Leora said.
"Seriously, I haven't forgiven you for that," Kyle said.
"I think it was after that day Leora really became a girl and started making other friends," Miles said.
"I was always a girl," Leora replied.
"I know that, but like you started growing out your hair and not spending all your time with me and Kyle," Miles said.
Kyle steered the conversation away from that fateful day. Soon everyone was talking and laughing amongst themselves. Everyone was having a good time. Kyle was busy laughing with Miles and Jared, when Brooke asked Leora a question that caught his attention.
"So any college plans?" Brooke asked.
"Actually yeah, I've applied to a few colleges and I've got a few acceptance letters too," Leora said nodding her head.
"Let me guess you're gonna follow Lilly to Stanford and be roomies," Jake said.
"UCLA?" Kyle asked.
"Or Berkeley? Isn't that we're Caleb went?" Adam asked.
"First off Caleb and I are just friends now, and those are all maybe's, but I've gotten letters from NYU and Columbia as well," Leora said.
"New York?" Kyle asked shocked.
"Yeah, it's always been mine and Lilly's dream to go to New York," Leora said looking at Lilly who nodded her head.
"But that's so far away," Kyle said. This was news to him. He hadn't even known Leora had applied to colleges on the east coast.
"I haven't made a decision yet, but I wanted to have options," Leora said waving her hand, like it wasn't a big deal. "What about you? You haven't talked about college either."
"I don't know, I've been thinking about UCLA, but I'm also pretty busy with my music already," Kyle shrugged.
His phone started ringing before anyone else could speak. He fished it from his pocket as James cleared his throat. He knew that James didn't like anyone taking phone calls at the table.
"It's Kelly, she only calls me in an emergency when dad won't answer his phone," Kyle said jumping. He answered it even though James glared at him. "Hey Kel, make it quick pops is about to murder me."
"Hey kid, Your dad needs to check his email more often," Kelly said.
"Why? What's wrong?" Kyle asked.
"Nothing wrong, your album just went platinum," Kelly said.
"What?" Kyle asked. Did she really just say that? There was no way he heard her correctly.
"You went platinum," Kelly said excitedly. "Well? Aren't you happy? Hello?"
Jared jumped up and waved a hand in front of his face. He grabbed Kyle's phone and started talking to Kelly.
"Hey Kel, it's Jared. I think you broke him," Jared said. "What? Are you serious?" That seemed to snap Kyle from his daze. He snatched his phone back and shot Jared a look to keep quiet. He ran over to Kendall.
"Kelly said check your email," Kyle said, "he's checking it now Kel." He said into his phone.
"What's wrong?" Kendall asked confused.
"Please just do it," Kyle said.
Kendall pulled his phone out. He started scrolling. Kyle saw the look of confusion changed to a look of shock as he opened an email.
"We are pleased to inform you…" Kendall said.
"Certified Platinum," Kyle said quickly. Everyone at the table gasped in shock. "How is that even possible? It only hit gold like two weeks ago? This isn't real. It can't be real," Kyle rambled as Kendall took his phone to talk to Kelly.
James jumped up and pulled Kyle into a hug, telling him how proud he was of him.
"Figures the kid goes platinum first," Matt joked.
"How though?" Kyle asked, still in shock. He had not expected this at all.
Kendall handed the phone off to Leora as Lelly wanted to talk to her. He turned to Kyle and hugged him too. He was spewing off about how hard Kyle had worked for this and how proud he was. Jared was right there too, proud of him. Soon Kyle was swamped with hugs and congratulations.
After dinner the adults cleaned up, while they told the kids it was ok for them to leave. Kendall knew they had another party planned for just them tonight and he didn't expect Kyle or Leora to come home tonight. Noah had cleared it all with him earlier in the day.
Kyle ran up to his room to get a few things. He turned and saw Jayda had followed him. He arched a brow at her confused.
"We need to talk," Jayda said.
"Why I haven't done anything to upset you yet, Miles and I have been on our best behavior, I promise," Kyle joked.
"I will find out what you did," Jayda said, "but this isn't about that," she said as she sat down in his desk chair.
"What's up?" Kyle asked.
"What's going on with you and Miles? You two have been acting a little different," Jayda said.
"I don't know what you mean, it's Miles he's my best friend," Kyle said slowly.
"I know that, but something is off," Jayda said, frowning.
"You know, he was there for me after everything with...the baby, and we've gotten a little closer from that," Kyle said looking down at the ground. He was lying through his teeth, but Jayda seemed to buy it. She jumped up from her spot and moved to sit beside him.
"I'm sorry I wasn't there for you, but I called you and we like talked and cried for like four hours," Jayda said.
"I know and that was awesome, I needed that too, but Miles has been there for me in a way different than Jared," Kyle said.
"Well I am here for a few weeks, if you ever need to talk, I'm here," Jayda said.
"I know Jay, thanks," Kyle said smiling at her.
He could tell by her expression that she didn't fully believe him, but she wasn't going to push right now. Soon Miles was hollering for them to hurry up or he was leaving without them.
—Happy Mistakes—
Kendall yawned as he made his way to the living room. James was already there sitting on the couch looking for something to watch. Everyone had finally left and they were alone. Jennifer has even convinced to let her take Jenny for the night. Jenny has not wanted her to leave her side for one minute.
"I am exhausted and it's not even eight o'clock yet," James said.
"Me too," Kendall said as he sat down beside him.
"Why are birthday parties so exhausting?" James asked.
"Because we spoil our children," Kendall replied.
"Because we love them," James added.
"Yeah," Kendall sighed as he leaned on James. James wrapped an arm around him with a content smile. "So, your mom and dad are back together?"
"I know that's crazy," James said.
"I remember the day your dad left, you invited yourself over for a sleepover," Kendall said.
"Yeah I remember them yelling and arguing and I just wanted to get away so I snuck out and went to your house. I knew it would be better there," James said.
"Yeah, I mean why did they get divorced?" Kendall asked curiously as he sat up to look at James.
"Well mom was busy building Diamond Cosmetics, and we never saw her. She caught him flirting with another lady and that's what started the argument. It escalated and that's when I ran away," James said.
"We watched movies and passed out in our pillow fort and then they showed up looking for you," Kendall asked.
"Mom grounded me for two weeks which dad was able to plead down to one week as his last act before the divorce," James chuckled.
"As long as I've known them, I think the only time I've ever seen them happy is when they are with you and the kids," Kendall said, "except tonight. They seemed to only notice the other."
"I know it was a little weird," James said, making a face.
"Now if only we could get my mom a date," Kendall laughed.
"Hey if she can't seal the deal with Fabio then I don't think it's ever gonna happen," James laughed. Kendall laughed as well. "She's happy though, she loves the kids and taking care of them too."
"I know, but I can't imagine a life without you in it," Kendall said, "I would be so lonely."
"Yeah but some people are better off alone," James replied.
"Yes Kendall, I would be lost without you too," Kendal said.
"Obviously, we learned how lost I would be after your heart attack, remember," James asked.
"I promise to be around for a long time. I'm taking better care of myself and reducing my stress at work by giving Penelope more responsibility and Kyle is always helping too. He's filling in on choreography and doing great with that," Kendall said.
"Funny you bring up Kyle, we need to talk," James said.
"What now? Is he in trouble?" Kendall asked confused.
"No, I just think he's heading down the same path you were last year. He's spreading himself too thin. He goes to school for eight hours, and then works late with you and the guys and then he has to find time for homework and a social life. Maybe you could lay off him at the studio a little," James said.
"Lay off him? He offers to do it," Kendall said, "and maybe I should be putting less on him, but with Penelope being pregnant I am going to need an assistant and I've thought about offering it to him while she is out on maternity."
"I can see him saying yes, but I don't think that that is a good idea," James said shaking his head.
"By the time Penelope goes on maternity he will be done with school and he wants to work at Rocque Records, hell Gustavo wants to hire him. He's got him doing his bidding already," Kendall said.
"Gustavo?" James asked confused.
"Yeah, he's working on a project and he brought Kyle in to help," Kendall said.
"What kind of project?" James asked.
"We signed a NDA," Kendall said.
"Seriously?" James asked.
"Yep, we can't talk about it other than with people who need to know," Kendall said.
"Kendall," James warned.
"If you had signed the contract you would be in the know," Kendall said.
"This again?" James frowned at his husband.
"I love you," Kendall said.
"Kendall we can't," James said.
"Why not?" Kendall asked.
"The kids, we've all got jobs we just can't leave," James said.
"Isn't your contract up for renewal next year? Besides it would be a summer tour most likely and the kids are all grown except for Jenny, and I am sure Adam and Cooper would love to watch her with Miri, or even Jake and Day, maybe even Leora," Kendall said.
"This is crazy," James said, shaking his head.
"I know, and I told Gustavo that you and Carlos would never agree," Kendall replied. He leaned in and pecked James on the cheek. "It's ok, we don't have to."
"Don't you mean me, Carlos, and Logan?" James asked.
"I meant what I said," Kendall replied. He stood up and walked from the room. He smirked as he heard James follow him. He glanced over his shoulder with a smirk. "I'm tired, I'm gonna go lay down."
"Oh no you don't, you can't do that to me," James said, cutting him off. He grabbed his arm, stopping him in place. "Logan's in?"
"NDA," Kendall said, zipping a finger over his lips.
"Kendall Donald," James said.
"Your threats hold no power over me. I am not going to lose my job because you won't sign a contract," Kendall said as he took off up the stairs.
James followed after him. He tackled the blonde to the floor of their bedroom. They started to wrestle and roll around on the floor. James eventually pinned him to the floor. They laid there staring at one another.
"Kendall."
"James."
"I will think about it," James said.
"I will talk once you sign the contract," Kendall replied.
"You're bluffing, he didn't sign," James said, shaking his head.
"Shut up and kiss me," Kendall said, pulling James down to him.
—Happy Mistakes—
Jared led the gang up to 2J. They had finally left the Knight house to have a real birthday party. Jayda and Miles were hanging off Kyle laughing already. Everyone was ready to have a good time.
They entered Noah and Roldy's apartment. Noah started telling everyone what they had to do for the night and the vote was taken to start with scary movies. Noah quickly got one started. Matt and Jared started making popcorn while Kyle and Miles got the soda and juice ready for everyone.
Kyle settled down on the floor between Jared and Miles again. Jayda was leaning on Miles as well. Noah and Roldy cuddled up on the couch. Matt and Penelope sat at the opposite end of the couch. Leora and Leora took the chairs near the couch. Artie and Lucas sat down on the floor by the girls.
After a couple movies and everyone trying to scare one another they started playing games. Everyone was laughing and having a good time. There was a card game going on at the kitchen table, the girls were playing a game in the living room.
Kyle looked around and noticed that Roldy was missing. He noticed Jared talking to Noah and looking towards the balcony doors. Kyle turned and saw Roldy out there alone. He walked over to the two.
"I can go talk to him," he said butting into their conversation
"Kyle," Noah said.
"If anyone knows what he's going through it's me," Kyle said.
Noah opened his mouth and closed it. He shared a look with Jared. They both sighed. Kyle made his way out to the balcony. Roldy just sighed as the door slipped shut.
"I know I should be in there, but I'm just not up for it Jared," Roldy sighed.
"I'm not Jared," Kyle said.
Roldy turned in surprise. "Sorry, I just assumed Noah would send Jared after me."
"I stopped him," Kyle said, walking over to the railing. He leaned against it next to him.
"I don't want to talk," Roldy said.
"You told me, after everything that went down with Sophie, even though you didn't know what it felt like that you would be here to talk," Kyle said.
"I did," Roldy nodded his head.
"Now that you know what it's like, wanna talk?" Kyle asked.
"It hurts so bad and it's like no one else understands," Roldy admitted.
"I get it, for the first month everything single thing reminded me of her. I could hardly even look at Eli too. Seeing him made me think about her and what I could have had. It's a pain I don't think I ever could have imagined and I would wish it on anybody," Kyle said.
"I don't know why it hurts this bad," Roldy admitted, "it's not like I was that far along."
"Because losing a pregnancy at any stage sucks," Kyle replied. He felt tears threatening to fall. He looked away from Roldy. He hadn't cried over this in months now.
"It doesn't go away does it?" Roldy asked.
"No, I think about her all the time still. I wonder how different things would be if she was here? Would Lilly have still left for college? Would we still have Jill and Carly? I play that stupid game every single day and it just...it's like the walls are caving in on me. It makes me feel like I'm suffocating and it makes me want to just give up and quit," Kyle said, his tears finally fell.
"I don't think you could give up, it's not in your blood," Roldy replied wiping tears from his own eyes as well.
"I've been told that before too," Kyle chuckled, "but even I know that sometimes you have to know when to ask for help."
"I need help," Roldy admitted.
"Me too," Kyle said nodding his head. "I've been avoiding it for months now, but maybe I do need to talk to someone."
"I'll get help if you do too," Roldy said.
"Deal," Kyle said nodding his head.
"Ro?"
The two turned as Noah poked his head out the door. He stepped out onto the balcony. He walked over to Roldy and pulled him into a hug.
"I'm not ok," Roldy said slowly, "I need help."
"We can find help, I just want you to be happy. I know it's gonna be a process, but we will get there," Noah said.
"Yes, on Monday we can do that, but tonight it is about Kyle and Leora's birthday. We should be celebrating, not out here bawling our eyes out," Roldy said.
"Yes, let's celebrate," Noah agreed.
"You two go ahead, I'll be in in a minute," Kyle said.
"Want me to keep Jared busy," Roldy asked.
"Yeah, I just need a minute," Kyle said.
The two left closing the door behind them. Kyle turned and looked out to the Palm Woods pool. He too a few calming breaths. Talking about Sophie brought forth a lot of the negative emotions he had been bottling up for months now. He needed to gather himself and push all that back down.
"Hey."
He glanced over his shoulder as Leora walked out by him. She took a seat on the lounger. She patted the spot beside her. Kyle day down next to her.
"Sorry about dropping New York on your like that," Leora said.
"I mean I should have known, you and Lilly always talked about it, but I figured you had changed your mind and that you would go to Stanford with her," Kyle said.
"Yeah, but New York has always been my dream," Leora said.
"You've already made up your mind haven't you," Kyle asked.
"Maybe," Leora said.
"New York is so far away," Kyle said, shaking his head. He didn't want her moving across the country.
"That's kind of the point," Leora replied.
"Why? There are plenty of colleges here in California we could go to," Kyle said.
"We?" Leora asked.
"I meant you," Kyle said before shaking his head. "No, I meant what I said. We have never been apart for that long. I can't function without you Leora. You are my sister, who's gonna defend me against Adam and Jake?"
"You'll survive," Leora said, "besides I can live my entire life in your shadow. I need to figure out who Leora is and I can do that here in California."
"My shadow?" Kyle asked.
"Like at dinner when grandma asked me about college and then you got that phone call from Kelly and suddenly it was all about you again," Leora said.
"I didn't mean to-" Kyle started.
"I know, but everything I do gets compared to you, or Adam or Jake. If not that then I'm Kendall and James' daughter. I just want to go somewhere where none of that matters anymore. I wanna be a nobody and have any expectations thrust on me just because of who I'm related to," Leora said.
"But do you have to go to New York?" Kyle asked.
"Maybe," Leora shrugged.
"Ok then, I'll help you get settled in at NYU," Kyle sighed.
"I haven't-"
"Yes you have, and you know it," Kyle nudged her lightly. "I'll support you no matter what Le, you are my sister. I want what's best for you."
"Thanks big brother."
"Anything for you baby sister."
They both laughed and shoved the other. Kyle stood and helped her up. They headed back inside. Leora joined Lilly on the couch for a game of charades. Kyle sat down next to Miles who was trying to guess what Jayda was acting out.
"Dude she's modeling," Kyle said.
"Yes," Jayda exclaimed pointing at Kyle. "Thank you."
"Sorry, I'm not the brightest bulb in the bunch, why you picked me as a partner for charades I don't know. Besides I'm a terrible actor and I can't keep my mouth shut," Miles said.
"Yeah, who thought it was a good idea to have Miles play a no talking game?" Kyle asked.
"Well you were busy," Jayda said.
"Well I'm here now and we can dominate," Kyle said.
"I'll join Lil and Lu, make it three person teams," Leora volunteered.
"You're on, we will kick your asses," Kyle said.
Eventually everyone grew tired. Noah and Roldy came out with several blankets and pillows for everyone. They all decided to watch a few more movies as they winded down. Penelope was granted the couch to lay on as she was pregnant and Matt threatened to end Miles if he tried to take it again. Penelope just laughed and told Matt to relax. Miles joined Jared and Kyle as the movie started.
—Happy Mistakes—
Kyle bolted into the stairwell of the Palm Woods. Miles was close behind him. The two had gone to the store to get some things for breakfast. They had woken up before anyone else and taken it upon themselves to make breakfast, only to realize Noah and Roldy had no eggs, or bacon or even bread.
"Slow down," Miles panted. Kyle stopped on the landing between floors and waited for Miles.
"It's hardly a race if I have to wait for you," Kyle teased. He set his bags down on the ground and walked over to Miles. He pushed him into the wall.
"Race? You cheated taking off before you even told me it was a race," Miles countered. He moved to push Kyle away, but he remained firmly in place.
"It's more fun that way," Kyle replied as he ghosted his lips over Miles' silencing any snarky reply he had.
"Isn't this a bit risky," Miles asked slowly, "we could get caught by anyone."
"It's the same as Rocque Records, why so shy suddenly?" Kyle asked.
He didn't give Miles time to reply. He sealed their lips together in a needy kiss. Miles melted right into him, nearly dropping the grocery bags he was holding. Kyle swiped his tongue along Miles' lips. His mind went blank. He was like putty in Kyle's hands. He could never deny Kyle.
Kyle laughed as he took a step back. Miles stood there moment as he gathered his wits. He didn't understand the effect that Kyle was having on him. They were best friends, yet he could take his breath away so easily.
"You are not playing fair," Miles said, his brain finally working again.
"Don't act so surprised," Kyle replied.
"Let's go, the others should be waking up soon," Miles said, pushing past the blonde.
"Oh yeah, we gotta make breakfast," Kyle said, his brain switching tracks again. He snatched his bags and started up the stairs.
Miles took a moment before he followed. His mind was racing, it seemed like Kyle was getting bolder and bolder about where he chose to do that. It was almost like he wanted to get caught. Miles wasn't sure what he expected to come from this. They had agreed right off the bat that this was nothing. It was them having fun, and as soon as Miles figured things out they would stop. Well, Miles has figured things out and they were still doing this, more frequently too. Maybe once Miles started dating this would end.
They entered 2J and everyone was still sleeping. Miles wasn't surprised, they had stayed up partying all night. Kyle started moving around the kitchen as quietly as he could. He started a pot of coffee and set to making breakfast. They had bought enough food to feed an army. Kyle wanted pancakes and Miles wanted French toast. So they were making both, along with eggs, bacon, and sausage.
Penelope was the first to stir. She ran past the two complaining about her bladder and how the baby thought it was a toy. She returned a few minutes later and greeted them.
"Breakfast?" She asked.
"Yeah, wanna help with the eggs?" Kyle asked.
"Sure, I might as well," Penelope replied.
The coffee pot beeped signaling the coffee was ready. Miles walked over and grabbed two coffee mugs. He looked to Penelope.
"Can't have caffeine," Penelope replied, gesturing to her baby bump.
"Right, gotta keep MJ safe so OJ?" Miles asked.
"MJ?" Penelope asked, "and orange juice is fine."
"If you say Miles Junior I will slap you," Kyle said.
"No, MJ is for Matty Junior," Miles said as he poured the drinks and handed them out.
Penelope started cracking eggs for them as Kyle explained the plan. Jared was the next to stir. He sat up looking around for Kyle and relaxed when he spotted him in the kitchen. He made his way over rubbing his eyes tiredly.
"Do you ever sleep?" He asked.
"No," Kyle replied with a smirk. "I got hungry and Noah and Roldy didn't have any food so Miles and I took it upon ourselves to fix that problem so no one else would be hungry."
"He rudely woke me up to go shopping," Miles said, grabbing another coffee mug and pouring Jared a cup.
"Oh please, you were already up, I know you weren't sleeping," Kyle said.
"I was trying to go back to sleep," Miles countered.
"Please no arguing before I've had my coffee," Jared said, cutting them off.
"Yes sir," Miles said, saluting him.
"Can you two please be quiet? Some people are trying to sleep here."
Kyle looked past Jared towards Jayda who was glaring at them. Kyle held up his coffee cup.
"Want some?"
"Might as well, you two are never gonna be quiet," Jayda sighed as she tossed her blanket aside.
"We missed you too Jay," Miles said, blowing a kiss at her.
"I will end you," Jayda threatened.
"Please no, it took way too long to find a best friend like this. I don't want to have to train another," Kyle said.
"Train?" Miles asked, he paused as he thought about it, "yeah, I get it."
Everyone laughed at that. Kyle quickly shushed them as he glanced over to everyone who was still sleeping. They all quieted down and started making breakfast. Kyle gave everyone a job and they all set to work. Jared was not allowed near the stove, so he was cracking eggs with Penelope. Jayda was making the pancake batter and Kyle was slicing bread for French toast, and Miles was just getting in the way.
"Dude stop," Kyle said as he almost ran into him again.
"I'm just trying to help, I feel a bit useless here," Miles said.
"Dude, I hate to break it to you but you are kind of useless," Kyle quipped.
"You know, I know you're upset because I almost knocked you over and that you don't mean those hurtful things you say," Miles shot back.
"Sure, sure whatever helps you sleep at night," Kyle teased.
"You can make another pot of coffee. You know the others are gonna want some when they wake up," Jared cut in.
"That I can do," Miles said, "see Jared gets me. He knows my abilities."
"No one gets you dude, you are an oddity. We just try to keep you busy," Kyle said.
"This is true, no one understands me. Hell, I don't even understand myself sometimes," Miles joked.
It wasn't long before everyone else was awake and eagerly waiting for breakfast. Soon the food was read and everyone dug in thanking Kyle and Miles for the food.
As space was limited at the table and counter, Kyle found himself sitting on the floor at the coffee table with Jayda and Miles. Jared was sitting with Noah and Roldy at the counter. Kyle and Jayda were talking about her coming over to talk with James that Kyle almost didn't notice Miles trying to steal his bacon.
"Dude stop," Kyle said, swatting Miles hand away.
"But the kitchen is so far away and I want more," Miles said, reaching for the bacon again.
"This is mine, I worked so hard for it, go get your own," Kyle said shoving Miles away.
"But Kyle," Miles whined leaning in closer to the blonde and pouting.
"Stop," Kyle warned him.
"If I didn't know any better I'd say you two need to just bang and get it over with," Jared sighed as he walked over to them. With his plate in hand.
"If you can't be a little gay with your best friend-" Miles started.
"Miles you're more than a little gay," Jared cut him off as he sat down on the couch.
"No I'm pan, but let me finish," Miles said.
"What?" Jayda asked.
"Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you I came out," Miles said.
"What?" Lilly asked, "when?"
"You forgot to tell a lot of people," Kyle laughed.
"Like a couple weeks ago," Miles shrugged. "I'm pansexual."
"How did this happen?" Jayda asked curiously.
"Well it started over Christmas break. We were up at this ski resort and this guy was hitting on me and I didn't exactly hate it," Miles said.
"No the opposite really, I caught them making out," Kyle said.
"Christmas? That's more than a couple weeks," Lilly said.
"Christmas was when I realized I might like guys, and a couple weeks ago Kyle and Noah helped me put a word to it," Miles said.
"Mostly Noah, I suggested bi, but that didn't feel right," Kyle said.
"It didn't, cause with that guy it wasn't because he had a dick that I was attracted to him it was because he made me laugh," Miles said.
"Yeah, and I'm totally attracted to Jared's dick so I'm bi for sure," Kyle replied.
Jared choked on his food as his face flushed red. Kyle jumped up and tried to help him as he coughed.
"Stop," Jared said.
"Oh come on Monroe it's not secret the kid likes your dick. I mean he keeps coming back for more," Matt said.
"Don't be such a prude, you know what I'm like and you are still here so I must be doing something right," Kyle said with a wink.
"The more embarrassed you get the worse he will get," Leora called from her spot at the table.
"Ok that's enough of that," Miles jumped up and squirmed his way in between the pair.
"We Kyle, you weren't giving him enough attention now he feels left out," Jared teases as he poked Miles in the side. "Don't you know you're supposed to shower him with attention otherwise he shrivels you and dies."
"Yeah, what he said," Miles said, poking Kyle's nose.
"Would that be a bad thing?" Kyle asked looking past Miles to Jared.
"Hey, he's your friend. I never asked for this, but you can't have Kyle without Miles or Miles without Kyle. I accept that, but I will not take responsibility for him. That's on you," Jared said.
"Yeah, as annoying as he is I really do love him," Kyle said slinging an arm around Miles playfully.
"Oh please, you know you want me," Miles said, winking at Jared.
"You wish," Jared replied.
"Ok that's enough hitting on my boyfriend," Kyle said shoving Miles off the couch.
"Touchy," Miles quipped with a laugh.
Everyone laughed at the trio. This was nothing new. Once breakfast was done and the kitchen was clean everyone left saying their goodbyes and that they needed to hang out more.
Kyle left with Jared, Miles, and Jayda. Jayda wanted to go visit James now that things were a little less chaotic and they could talk shop together.
"Ok, but drop me off, I need a shower and a nap. You woke me up way too early for how late I went to sleep," Jared said.
"Ok old man," Kyle teased.
"Laugh it up, soon sleeping on the floor will be a challenge for you and I'll be laughing," Jared said glaring at the teen.
"No you won't, you'll be in even more pain," Kyle quipped.
"He's got ya there," Miles laughed.
They arrived at Jared's house. Jared gave the blonde a goodbye kiss before getting out of the car. Miles quickly got into the front seat.
"Remember the days when I had to drive your sorry asses everywhere," Jayda asked from the back seat.
"Oh my god, that was so long ago," Kyle laughed.
"Yes and we love you for that and we are forever in your debt," Miles said.
"God, I missed you guys," Jayda said.
"You need to visit home more," Kyle said.
