Chapter 2: Devine Interventions

The Planet Krypton… in its final moments…

Krypton was dying.

The planet was dying and her people, her children if you will, a race known far and wide as the Kryptonians, knew it.

They had lost the war, the war they had waged amongst themselves, the war against their enemies and the war for their very homeworld itself.

Once, Krypton had been the crown jewel of the entire universe, a bright shining paradise of a planet that blessed many wondrous natural gifts among her children, the Kryptonians, an inherently beautiful and incredibly advanced race of god-like beings with powers to match.

Using their worlds vast natural resources and their own incredibly evolved biology, the Kryptonians created a super-advanced scientific society in record time. They built cities and skyscrapers, arenas and theatres, schools and academies, laboratories and science centres across their world.

But like all intelligent species, the children of Krypton became curious about what lay beyond their world's sun, that curiosity became so great that eventually the Kryptonians desired to see other worlds besides their own and they built starships to do just that.

But it was not just for curiosity's sake, the people of Krypton had built a utopia after all and they wanted to share it with the rest of galaxy…

… at least that was how it started.

But as the Kryptonians travelled across the cosmos, exploring new worlds and meeting new forms of life, both sentient and non-sentient, they realised just how much more advanced and evolved they were to these other alien races.

The Kryptonians took it upon themselves to take charge of these more primitive races, to teach them their more civilised ways, to guide them into a new and better future… as subjects to Krypton and her children.

Perhaps the Kryptonians had not meant for it turn out that way, but there was no denying that at some point during their peoples travels across the galaxy, their exploration of other planets became conquest and their education of other races became subjectification as they spread Krypton's influence across the universe.

Entire and already populated worlds, became controlled settlements for the Kryptonians, they still shared their knowledge and technology with the native races, educating them in their more civilised ways, but as time went on it was becoming increasingly clear that the native races had little choice in the matter.

Naturally, some of the more primitive races fought back and naturally, the Kryptonians enslaved them in turn. As ambitious arrogance slowly turned these once gentle scientific explorers into glory seeking conquerors and what was once a peaceful society quickly became a warmongering empire.

As they conquered other worlds to add to their ever-growing empire, aside from enslaving rebellious races, the Kryptonians would regularly consume, experiment on or breed with other particularly powerful sapient species, as way of incorporating that race unique powers and abilities into their own DNA makeup, a genetic gift to pass onto their children and strengthen the next generation of Kryptonians.

That was how it stayed for thousands of years…

… but as the Kryptonians became more and more powerful from their continuous domination of over half the galaxy, the nigh unstoppable race of god-like beings began to argue amongst themselves, over the typical burdens that plague civilised society such as politics, economics and most of all, the morality of their empire's aggressive expansion across the universe.

As with most morally ambiguous questions in life, one faction of Kryptonians was against the aggressive subjectification of the galaxy and wished to return to the old, more peaceful ways of their scientific forefathers, while the other wanted to push the expansion of their empire to new heinous heights, seeking total dominion over the universe and every living creature in it.

Heated council debates became outright confrontations on the battlefield between the once unified race, as the two separate factions fought a bloody civil war for control of the Kryptonian Kingdom itself, sabotage, assassinations and usurpations became all too common place on the once peaceful paradise as the children of Krypton fought amongst themselves, as children are prone to do.

However, as the Kryptonians fought their enemies on other worlds and against one another back on their own, they failed to notice what was happening to their planet until it was too late.

Krypton was dying.

No one knows for sure how or when the once pristine planet's light began to fade, some believe the civil war for control of the empire was to blame due to all the battles that had been waged on the world's surface, others believe one of the races the Kryptonians had conquered was responsible, that one or more of these primitive people had found a way to poison Krypton's core, causing it to rot from within...

… But many people, believe that the planet had simply chosen to kill itself, too ashamed to continue on existing after the numerous atrocities her corrupted children had committed across the galaxy, to other sentient races, to each other and to Krypton herself for eons.

That was how it began to end…

Because as the planet started tear itself apart from the inside out, the empire the Kryptonians had built upon generations of conquest had spread to far across the stars to hold itself together, and as the civil war on Krypton reached a fruitless conclusion, the conquered races of the galaxy began to rise up against their overlords and free themselves from their enthrallment.

Their government in shambles and their empire in ruins, the surviving colonies of Kryptonians fled back to their homeworld, to try and reunite as a people, to try and save their planet.

But they were already too late…

Krypton was dying and there was nothing any of them could do to save it now, all they could do was try and escape its fiery fate and live to rebuild their empire another day.

So as red-hot veins of molten magma ripped across the planet's surface, as the worlds once lush landscape burned into oblivion by erupting volcanic chaos, thousands of starships and space shuttles flew from the fires of Krypton's final moments before the darkness took her forever.

But none could escape their homeworld's infernal death throes, either the large space shuttles were pulled back down by the planet's fluxing gravity or collided with one another in their hurry to escape, while the smaller starships were either hit by flaming debris or shot down by the Kryptonians recently revolted servants on sight before they could get far.

That was the end of the Kryptonian Empire, the most magnificent and misery inducing one the universe has ever known, that was the end of Krypton, the most beautiful planet in the galaxy.

That was the end of the Kryptonians…

… or so many thought…

… One single, small escape pod was all that had managed to escape the destruction of the Kryptonian homeworld, the egg-shaped rocket was too small to be pulled back down by Krypton's fluxing gravitational pull and just quick enough to avoid the barrage of exploding debris shot out from it as the planet violently died.

The pod shot across the cosmos and far away from its now dead homeworld, past planets and through solar systems until finally, it reached its destination, a planet on the very edge of the Kryptonian Empire, whose inhabitants ironically greatly resembled the Kryptonians themselves in appearance as well as nature, not surprising, considering the planet had been a testing ground for many of Krypton's more meta experiments…

A planet called Earth, and it was here, on this small world at the edge of the universe, where are story truly begins…

Atop Mount Olympus, Realm of the Greek Gods, inside the Queen's Private Quarters…

Hera, the Leading Goddess of the Greek Pantheon, Queen of the Heavens, and the Real Ruler of Mount Olympus was sitting on her golden throne in her private quarters atop the floating mountain, draped in a purple Grecian style dress decorated by numerous peacock feathers, a bejewelled crown atop her braided amethyst haired head and a giant gem incrusted chalice in her hand, filled to the brim with golden nectar wine.

It was her second glass that evening.

The Goddess of the Sky, Womanhood, Marriage, Family and so many other things she did not even bother to care to name anymore, was in another of her usual foul moods, having just been humiliated once more by her younger brother and ex-husband Zeus earlier that day.

When the pantheon of the Greek Gods had first formed after the Great Titan War, Hera had married her younger, more powerful brother Zeus out of necessity, rather than out of passion, but still, she had stood loyally by his side as they built Mount Olympus and ruled over the mortal realms of Ancient Greece, as well as devotedly doing her wifely duties by giving him wise council and bearing him a strong male heir in their son Ares.

But their marriage was still a passionless one and soon it became a cold one, for how had that lighting loving idiot repaid her for bearing him godly children and helping him secure their divine kingdom, by cheating on her with anything that moved and had a pretty face, of course.

Zeus had cheated on her with both mortal and immortal women of every class and kind, siring half-breed bastards on almost all of them, and any time she would speak up against her husband's shameless adultery, he would simply ignore her or demand that she be silent about it. It was not a queen's place to tell a king what he can or cannot do, he would tell her, or rather WHO he can or cannot do, and that was how things were for the rest of their marriage until she had finally divorced him.

As for her brother's Demigod bastards, Hera had taken the upmost joy in tormenting them whenever her buffoonish brother wasn't looking, not that he cared for many of the by-products of his mortal affairs anyways… except for one bastard in particular and it was that one that Hera hated the most of all.

But eventually, as the centuries passed and the civilisation of Ancient Greece fell to make way for the more modern era, All the Greek Gods and Goddesses saw their influence over the Grecian world greatly decreased as most mortals forgot the Olympian Pantheon ever really existed, to be replaced by other newer faiths and religions.

That was actually the cause of her latest scorning by her ex-husband, Hera had requested for more islands so that her worshippers could expand their kingdom, but Zeus had flatly refused her request, saying that one island of fiery feminists was more than enough, she had walked out of throne room after that, fuming as the rest of the Olympian court forcibly laughed at their kings' bad joke while Hera took comfort in a bottle of her beloved nectar wine.

The Sky Goddess finished her second glass and had just began pouring her third, when a fiery light soaring just above the clouds around Mount Olympus caught her attention.

Something was entering the Earth's atmosphere.

The members of the Greek Pantheon were aware of other worlds outside of the one they looked down on, of other planets with life, filled with civilisations of foreign mortals and their own strange Gods, but it mattered little to them, as long as those alien Gods kept to their own worlds and left theirs alone, most simply did not care to learn more about what was out beyond the stars.

But this though, this had possibilities…

Even from this great distance, Hera could sense a potentially great power coming from the pod, or rather… coming from inside the pod itself.

Focusing on its energy from where she stood on her balcony, she sensed that there was something alive inside that strange alien pod, two somethings in fact, and both of them were very, very powerful.

Something that powerful could be very useful to her and her worshippers.

With a divine flick of her finger, the Queen of the Heavens used her power over the weather to change the trajectory of the alien pod just as it exited the planet's atmosphere, altering it from its original course of the American town of Smallville and instead towards a certain island in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, an island of which she and her pantheon still had complete dominion over, except for her ex-husband Zeus, for… obvious reasons.

Hera smiled to herself as she watched the pod shoot across the night sky in the opposite direction now before finally making landfall just off the islands sandy shore.

The Sky Goddess then quickly finished her third glass of nectar before grabbing her royal sceptre and after making sure she looked the part of an Olympian queen, headed out of her chambers and down the hall.

She had to look her best for her worshippers, she had a divine declaration to give after all.
