Chapter 11: Dreaded Revelations
On the Island of Themyscira, in the middle of the Palace Courtyard…
Hippolyta had been dreading this day for some time now, pun definitely not intended.
The day when other members of the Greek Pantheon would eventually find out about the secret weapon Hera had given to her Amazon worshippers, the gift the Queen of the Gods had given to her.
She knew that it was unavoidable, that they couldn't possibly keep it a secret for long when the Greek Gods eventually decided to visit Themyscira again, but still, she had been hoping for just a little more time for… something.
But time had run out, it seemed and she feared today would be that dreaded day.
But still, of all the Gods and Goddess that could show upon this day, from Athena to Ares, from Artemis to Apollo, the last one she expected to see was Persephone, the Queen of Dread herself.
The Underworld Goddess had arrived suddenly and completely unannounced, literally sprouting up from between the cracks in the palace courtyard via a giant opening flower before descending down the lowered petals like a flight of stairs in a green flowery dress, putting on quite a show for the shocked Amazons.
The Lady of the Underworld was a very attractive women, by both the standards of mortals and immortals alike, with wavy ruby red hair, emerald green eyes, a heart shaped face, a curvaceous figure and in a near constant state of youth and vitality, it was easy for any to see why Hades had chosen her as his consort and why many said her beauty could even rival Aphrodites herself, not that anyone would dare say that in the Goddess of Love presence, of course.
The moment the Daughter of Demeter had stepped her shoeless soles onto the hard stone of the palace courtyard however, the shock of her appearance had worn off as Persephone immediately demanded an audience with her, as was often the way for Gods and Goddesses alike, most of them did not bother to schedule meetings with their worshippers and her sisterhood was no exception.
As she and her Amazons approached, for a brief, terrifying moment, Hippolyta thought the Goddess of Spring and Rebirth had come to inform them that Hercules and his Barbarian horde had escaped the Underworld and were already on their way to Themyscira.
In that moment, the Queen of the Amazons felt her heart be consumed with an overwhelming sense of fear, they weren't ready, they weren't even close to being ready yet.
But fortunately, that was not the case, as it turns out, a monster had escaped from the Underworld, but it wasn't the monster she was worried about.
But still, when Persephone told exactly who it was that had escaped and had their island, she and all her sisters where shocked even further than before to say the least.
"Here?" Hippolyta asked, completely dumbfounded by this unexpected information. "But why would the Guardians of the Underworld come here?"
"I'm not sure, but as of late, something has definitely been drawing the three of them to your island for a while." Persephone explained to the crowd of gathered Amazons. "I was actually about to come and see you Hippolyta, to ask what might be the cause of their curiosity when my husband had discovered they had already left on their own."
"Perhaps the Lord of the Underworld needs to look into getting a better pet monster to guard his realm." Alkyone grunted in an annoyed tone, the Underworld's Goddess's arrival had interrupted her and her queen's sparing session, putting the circle captain in an even fouler mood than usual.
At this unkind remark towards her husband's ever faithful guardians, Persephone shot Alkyone an angry look that quickly morphed into a mocking grin. "Why Alkyone, I did not realise you'd be willing to offer your services to us, you are certainly scary enough to send even the most terrifying monsters running back into the dark depths, my dear."
The Captain of the Queen's Circle face became red with rage at the perceived insult, but before Alkyone could respond, Hippolyta stepped back in to hopefully diffuse the situation. "Do you have any idea as to why Cerberus and his brothers have come to our island, Lady Persephone?"
"No, which is exactly what I've come to find out." Persephone said with narrowed eyes and a suspicious tone, Hippolyta was instantly reminded of exactly why Demeter's daughter was called the Queen of Dread, it was because of that cold, unflinching gaze of hers that could send renegade souls screaming back into the River Styx with but a single glance.
"Tell me, Hippolyta." Persephone growled with the authority that could only come with the power of being not only a queen, but Lady of the Underworld as well. "Has anything on Themyscira… changed in recent years? Anything whose presence on your island might be enough to lure MY Giant Three Headed Hellhound away from his guard duty?"
Taken aback by the sheer directness of the question, Hippolyta knew she and her fellow Amazons could not even hope to give a satisfactory answer, only ONE thing had changed on Themyscira in recent years, they all knew it and yet, none of them wanted to be the one to tell Persephone exactly what or rather, WHO it was.
"No." Hippolyta said very unconvincingly, hoping this simple answer would be enough to satisfy Persephone. "At least, nothing important my lady."
The Queen of Dread kept her dreadfully, suspicious glare on Hippolyta and the other assembled Amazons an uncomfortably long time, her gaze clearly portraying that she did not believe them for even one second before finally speaking again in a clearly annoyed tone. "You know Hippolyta, it's when you talk like that, that I can't help but get the feeling that you might be hiding something from me."
Hippolyta and her fellow Amazons, even the usually fearless Alkyone and her circle sisters, all visibly paled as Persephone's eyes began to glow an eerie ethereal blue. "You would think after what my husband and I did to Sisyphus the Sly for all the smartass stunts he pulled; people would know better than to try and lie to my face." The Greek Goddess said with a humourless chuckle.
It was then that the Amazons all felt the ground beneath their feet begin to shake ever so slightly, causing them all flinch in fear as they were sure that the entire palace courtyard was about to be swallowed up by the earth and that Persephone was going to send them all straight to the Underworld.
But then it stopped and Goddess eyes ceased glowing almost as abruptly.
"Though I suppose it doesn't really matter now, does it?" Persephone asked in a clearly rhetorical tone of voice as he watched the now alarmed Amazons try to keep calm. "As I'm sure my husband's and mine's beloved pets will return home soon enough."
"I shall send my scouts out around the entire island searching for them." Hippolyta declared quickly, hoping to appease the now clearly angry Goddess with her words. "I promise, they will be found Lady Persephone."
"No need Hippolyta, Cerberus and his brothers are too large to go unnoticed on Themyscira for very long and all three of them have ferocious appetites." Persephone explained with an ominous smile. "Whatever it is that has lured them here, I assure you, THEY will track it down and when they do, they will de-."
HOWL!
The Goddess words were interrupted by the sound of a loud howl, all eyes turned to the opened field opposite the palace courtyard just as a white Wolfdog erupted out of the jungle and raced across the open ground with desperate determination.
HHHOOOWWWLLL! HHHOOOWWWLLL! HHHOOOWWWLLL!
Moments later, three more howls, far louder and more menacing in tone, were heard, followed by the crashes of falling trees as a gigantic black Three Headed Hellhound burst through the foliage, its three huge, snarling heads tearing off the tops of the trees as it stepped out onto open ground while its long scaly tail knocked over a random boulder.
With all three heads looking, the colossal canine quickly regained sight of the fleeing Wolfdog and with an ominous growl, bounded after it, its huge pawed footsteps causing the ground to shake as it did so.
In no time at all, the giant Three Headed Hellhound had caught up to the Wolfdog who had stopped at the edge of the field and bared his fangs at the larger beast, but the Hellhound simply batted the smaller dog away with his paw before bending down to pick up something the white canine had seemingly been guarding within its middle head's great toothy jaws.
The Wolfdog was back on his feet in an instant and proceeded to start barking furiously at the larger Hellhound who simply kept his three heads and whatever it was it was holding in its middle head's mouth just out of reach.
"Krypto! Cerberus! Notch! Spot!" A young male, almost boyish voice called from the part of the jungle the two unique canines came from. "Here boys! Over here! Come here boys!"
At the command, both canines turned and raced back the way they came, only stopping at the opening in the jungle the Hellhound's huge body had made as a young boy stepped into view through it.
Kal smiled as Krypto, his best friend, raced back to his side while the gigantic Three Headed Hellhound, loomed over both of them just as it did when they first encountered it an hour ago.
Only this time, there was no menace in those red eyes, only wide-eyed excitement and happiness as the middle head dropped the drool covered ball down onto the boys outstretched hand while the other two panted happily.
"Good boy Cerberus, you and your brothers actually managed to beat Krypto to the ball this time." Kal said congratulatory as he petted Krypto's head in a consoling manner while at the same time shaking the drool off the fetching ball in his other hand. "You know what that means."
At this, all three of the Hellhounds heads barked as one before the gigantic black beast seemingly fell over onto its great side of its own will, causing the ground to tremble as it did so.
What happened next, well…
"Who's a pack of good boys?" Kal asked affectionately as he began rubbing the colossal canine's belly in wide arcs. "Who's a giant friendly Three Headed Hellhound? Is it the three of you? Is it the three of you? Yes, that's right, yes, it is!"
The boy continued his playful rubbing, even climbing up on top of the belly of the beast to do so as the gigantic black Hellhound rolled onto its back, wriggling from side to side in the grassy field, it's four legs pawing and kicked playfully at the blue sky, while all three of its separate forked tongues lolled limply out of its mouths in happy pants.
To say this scene would be shocking, strange and kind of adorable to anyone watching would be a complete and utter understatement, as the crowd of observing Amazons were simply to stunned to say anything at all in that moment, their queen included. Hippolyta was pretty sure she heard some of her sisters dropping their weapons out of shock, but she couldn't be sure because she couldn't take her eyes off what she was seeing.
Until finally, the single Goddess among them broke the silence with a surprisingly warm chuckle.
"My word, would you look at them." Persephone said in a rather wistfully tone and out of the corner of her eye, Hippolyta saw the Lady of the Underworld smiling almost fondly at the astonishing scene before them. "You know, I cannot recall the last time I saw my boys being so playful with someone they just met."
"Cerberus and his brothers don't normally warm up to strangers so fast." Persephone explained to the gathered crowd of warrior women before her warm gaze turned suspicious again. "Though, I must admit, I am rather curious as to what a boy is doing on this island of Amazons, who is he and why is he here on Themyscira?"
"His name is Kal, Lady Persephone, he's... my son." Hippolyta said before she could stop herself, immediately regretting speaking up as Persephone suddenly whirled around to face her with wide, disbelieving eyes.
"Your son?" Persephone asked again incredulously before quickly looking back at the boy, the Wolfdog and Three Headed Hellhound playing together with a more critical eye than before.
"Well, well, it seems things have changed on this island after all, even more than I could have imagined." Persephone said, as much to herself as to the Amazons around her before continuing. "I think its time I met this… Prince of the Amazons, Hippolyta, one on one."
Then, like the changing of the seasons, Persephone's bright green colourful outfit changed before their eyes into a dark, black ominous dress, one more befitting of one who held the title of Lady of the Underworld.
As the Greek Goddess began to make her way towards the boy and two... or rather four dogs in this particular case, leaving the crowd of Amazons behind, dreading what the outcome of this meeting would mean for them, for their island… and for their prince as well...
Greetings to all my fellow fanfic readers and writers, I hope you all enjoyed Superman, Son of Hippolyta Chapter 11: Dreaded Revelations, which introduces the first divine character in this story since the Hera Queen of the Gods, Persephone, Lady of the Underworld, Daughter of Demeter and the Queen of Dread herself, also wife to Hades and owner of Cerberus, Notch and Spot.
Though this chapter is rather short like the last one, it's still very important to the overall story as it lets the cat out of the bag, so to speak, Kal's presence on Themyscira can no longer be kept secret after this upcoming encounter and soon, other divine beings will be taking notice of his existence as well, which will lead to things both good and bad to come…
Also, if you're all curious, Cerberus is the middle head, Notch is the right head and Spot is the left head, Cerberus head is the largest, Notch has a chunk out of his right ear missing and Spot has white spots on his snout, their names are also on their colours which is how Kal knows them.
As for those who are wondering on how do you overcome a Gigantic Three Headed Hellhound? just play with them like any other dog.
Now onto answering the single fan question this time from all of you…
1. Yes and No, you are correct when you say it would be an Uncle John and Aunt Martha in this scenario, but I was using the Spiderman characters Uncle Ben and Aunt May in response to another fans question.
