Situations from their lives
Family of the Hero: Parents
Link had often walked past the area but he hadn't dared to go venture through the pathways in there. At then he was usually found leaning against the wall as he watched the people's going. In his opinion, if he went to there it would make things certain, unavoidable and, maybe, bring a conclusion.
The Hero of Hyrule had been going through the old papers and books as they had been brought back to the castle from hidden places. These informational writings had been taken away by reliable people when Ganondorf's forces attacked the castle. Most of the things were salvaged from the destruction the King of Evil brought.
Most of that knowledge had been stuff that didn't really affect Link. Information of old missions and people he had never met. Sure, some of the things he read of were sorrowful and all but it didn't really hit that of badly. After all, he had gone through a lot in his life so reading of earlier fights and inspections wasn't bringing nightmares for him.
At first he had thought it to be a name among others. Just another Knight whom had fallen when Ganondorf came to the castle for the first time. The he had started to frown as he found more information of the guy. It wasn't anything too unexpected since high ranked Knights, and more so for those whom were King's personal Knights, were given more notion. It was only when that faithful day came forth in the documents that Link finally made the connection.
The cerulean eyed male had avoided the area for so long but now, after having found the truth, he finally entered the graveyard. The area had about meter and half tall wall around it and was built to west of the castle. Everyone whom had worked at the castle and were living in its close vicinity when they died were allowed to be buried in the castle's cemetery.
Of course, there always were exceptions. The Royal Family's Tomb was at Kakariko's graveyard. The Sheikahs, whom lived in Kakariko, were buried into there too. Link hadn't yet found the answer as to why the Royal Family was buried into Kakariko's graveyard instead of the castle's. Still, it didn't take off the fact that most, if not all, Knights are guards were buried into the castle's graveyard.
Link felt fully uncertain as he walked on the pathways in the cemetery. He knew perfectly well where the tomb was but he still wasn't certain he wanted to see it. Slowly and carefully he made his way towards the right spot while looking around at all of the other rocks and reading the names from them.
Eventually the Hero stopped at one specific square black rock. It had two names on it and only one day of difference in the date of death. Link gulped once while trying to get the lump out of his throat as he slowly crouched down.
He hadn't known them for long as he was born in the day his father died. He wasn't even certain if he had seen his father during those few hours he had been in the castle. He didn't remember his mother even one bit even though she had dashed him out of the burning castle and into the protection of the Great Deku Tree. He only learned to know his parents through the documents in the castle.
And yet, even without the personal knowledge of them, he still felt like something broke inside of him. He couldn't help but fall to his knees and hide his face into his hand as he started to cry. Link couldn't understand how he could mourn after people he had just barely even seen in his life. He couldn't even remember his mother's face for Goddesses sake!
He tried to calm down as he took the candle out of his pocket. When he had found out about his parents, he had made unconscious choice of coming here sooner or later. He hadn't thought even one bit as he had already picked the candle at one day while, somewhere within him, knowing what he'd do with it in the end.
Link took a deep and shaky breath before carefully lighting the candle. He placed it close to the rock, right between the two names. He wished to say something, anything, but he just couldn't find the words to speak. Not aloud nor in his own mind.
The Hero of Time stared at the small flame while slowly calming down. It was slightly mesmerizing and managed to take his thoughts out of the place where he currently was at. When he finally raised his gaze up from the burning candle, his notion came right back into the tomb and two names the rock held in it. Just reading the names was enough to break him down again. He bowed his head as he cried and hid his face into his hand once again as his ears drooped in sorrow.
Link knew that only his father was buried in this gave. That is, if there was a body left after the battle at the castle. His mother was buried somewhere into the forest around the Kokiri Forest. He didn't know where, how or if there was anything to mark the place. Even if he wanted to know the answers, he didn't dare to go asking about it from Saria, other Kokiris or the young Deku Tree. It just didn't feel appropriate anymore after all these years.
"I'm sorry…" He finally whispered without knowing why he chose those words. He had somehow managed to calm down enough to stare at the grassy patch of ground in front of the black rock. Still, he didn't dare to raise his gaze up in slight worry of breaking down again. "I'm sorry that I only now came to here." He continued quietly and lifted his line of sight into the flame in the candle. "I'm sorry that I didn't search out the answers and truth earlier." He spoke with slightly more confidence than before and finally raised his gaze into the two names on the tombstone.
Link slightly bit down to his lower lip in hopes of staying in one piece. "I… I hope you are proud of me…" He finally whispered since he wasn't able to bring even slightest bit of more strength into his voice. "I…. Um…" He didn't know what to say as he already dropped his gaze back into the grass. Deep inside he wished to blurt out his full life story but somehow he felt like his parents already knew what kind of life he had lived through.
"I… I wish I could've known you other than through reading documents and whatnot…" He continued and shrugged slightly with a short, humorless chuckle. Yet, right after those words he already sighed heavily and bit slumped. "There's… There's no-one left of your squad, dad… No-one left who would know of the past. No-one I could talk to in search of better information than the written words." He whispered sorrowfully while feeling like he could never truly learn to know his parents.
Link fell silent and just kept his gaze off of the smooth surfaced rock. He took deep breaths in hopes of keeping himself off from breaking down again. He bit down to his lower lip and slowly raised his gaze up into the tombstone. Before he could really think what he was doing, he carefully crawled closer and, uncertainly and even slightly fearfully, put his hand against the cold, black monument.
He started to blink repeatedly to keep the tears at bay as he gently traced the golden letters of the names of his parents. He took in the knowledge of his parents' birthdates and realized that there was less than a year of age difference between them. Surprisingly, his father was the younger one.
Link didn't know how long he had been at the graveyard and, more so, at his parents' grave. He simply realized that it was starting to get darker but he didn't feel like leaving as of yet. Before he even knew what he was doing, he already laid down to the grass and curled up while closing his eyes.
Through his sleeping he heard someone coming towards him. The sound of footsteps didn't wake him up since he recognized them and knew to be safe. "Link?" The call of his name came out worried but it still didn't stir him from the dreamland. "What in Goddesses names are you doing in here?" The voice was still worried but he still stayed more asleep than awake.
Link slightly groaned when he felt his older brother gently taking him into his arms. "Duckling?" The dark Hylian called while stopping his movement. He had only gotten the Hero up to his lap and was just going to stand up.
"…Dark…?" The cerulean eyed male half whispered while slowly opening his eyes. He could hear and feel his brother sigh in relief. "W… What are you doing here…?" He inquired while bit rubbing at his eyes to wake up before yawning.
Dark sighed bit heavily and gently got Link to sit bit more upright while leaning against his chest. "I could ask the same thing from you." The dark Hylian answered slightly angrily. "Do you have any of idea how worried I've been?" He continued before slightly frowning at what he noticed on his younger adopted brother's face. "Have… Have you been crying?" The ruby eyed Hylian eventually asked as he noticed Link bit drying the lines of crying from his face.
"I…" Link started before sighing heavily. His ears drooped and he turned his gaze away from his brother as well as from the tombstone. Dark frowned in full worry at how vulnerable the Hero looked at then and there.
Link opened and closed his mouth few times before taking a deep breath and pulling away from his brother's lap. "I…" He started before trailing off again with another heavy sigh. He closed his eyes for a moment before turning to look at the grave. "I came to see my parents…. Or what's considered as their grave." The Hero finally answered with just barely above just mouthing the words.
Dark was fully startled and took a much better check of the tombstone. He had wondered why Link had chosen this tomb out of all of the other graves in the area. In all reality, he had been worried that something bad would've happened and that Link wasn't simply asleep.
"I…" Dark started before sighing heavily and slumping. "I'm sorry, Link." He whispered while bowing his head and dropping his gaze into the grassy area.
Link sighed heavily but slightly smiled sorrowfully. "Don't be, Dark." He answered quietly and, while still being hesitant, carefully touched the stone. "I didn't get to know them." The Hero half whispered while fully wishing those words could've been a lie.
Dark was silent for a while as he tried to gather his thoughts up. "How did you find the right grave?" He finally asked while inwardly slightly cursing at himself for the given inquiry.
Link chuckled shortly before sighing. "Through the documents I've been going through for the past two months." He replied with a slight shrug. "The given information in one of the papers got me to wonder and dig deeper into his life." He explained as calmly as he could but it was clear in his voice that he wasn't fully alright.
Dark hesitated for a short moment before he gently wrapped his arms around Link and pulled him back into his lap. "Tell me what you've learned about your parents." He requested while putting it into half a beg.
Link had slightly gasped at the movement before getting calmed down on his brother's hold. At the wish, he felt uncertain and clearly showed it with one ear slightly drooping. The dark Hylian stayed silent while letting the Hero make his choice of whether or not to talk. Eventually the cerulean eyed swordsman took a deep breath and started to talk.
"My mother came from a poor family. She was the oldest of the three siblings. They lost their parents at young age and that left her to look after her brothers. She first worked with different odd jobs until she found herself from the castle. She was hard working and brought all her earnings back home to look after the twins. When her job at the castle was fully confirmed, she and her brothers moved into there for her to be able to look after them better." Link started bit quietly.
"What happened to her parents?" Dark inquired with a slight frown. Link sighed and shrugged sorrowfully.
"I haven't found out. She didn't have any of other family than her brothers." The Hero answered while feeling bit uncertain of the situation. Yet, he continued nonetheless.
"My father came from another kingdom. He was already at then a great warrior but there isn't much told of his family. There was a mention of his brother but it was quite vague thing without a name or place. Anyways, he joined the guards and soon caught the King's notion. The King challenged him to test his ways. It's not told what kind of things other than swordfight was gone through. Yet, the end result was of him getting into the Knights quite swiftly." Link explained while recalling all he had so far found of his parents.
Dark stayed silent while listening to his brother's explanation. "When did they meet?" He inquired after the Hero had been quiet for a while.
They met at the hallways quite often. She worked all around the castle and he often visited at the King's office to give out his reports. Eventually the King offered a place from his personal Knights. It was then her place as the Queen's personal maid was suggested. On this way they got to spend bit more of time together." Link continued with a sorrowful smile.
"It isn't told what happened to her brothers. My parents got married about a year after he had become the King's personal Knight. I…" The Hero continued before trailing off and gulping once. He leaned fully against Dark's chest and closed his eyes tightly as his ears drooped. "I was born in the day my father died." He told out bit slowly but firmly. After that he hang his head and hid his face into his hand.
Dark was bit started of the revelation but he was swift to tighten the hug and slightly cradle his crying brother. While whispering reassuring words and running his arms up and down around the Hero, he let him cry his sorrow and hurt out. It took its time but eventually the golden haired Hero calmed down. He didn't move even one bit while slightly enjoying of the hold and gentle words.
Link took a deep breath and closed his eyes. "Link Valiant Avalon." He half whispered with surprisingly strong voice. It bit startled the darker Hylian and got him to look down into his brother. "That's my name. Link Valiant Avalon." The Hero repeated and opened his eyes while still putting full notion to each of his names.
"I think that name works perfectly for you, bro." Dark half whispered and kissed the top of Link's head. The Hero simply nodded without a word. As the dark Hylian watched his brother, he easily noticed the sadness and tiredness in him. "How about we go back inside so that you can get actual sleep, hmm?" He suggested while grinning gently at how Link tried to hold the yawn inside.
The golden haired Hylian didn't answer but he did close his eyes a moment later. Dark carefully positioned his brother better in his arms before slowly standing up. He looked sorrowfully at the tombstone and read the names carefully through. "Thank You for having given birth to this amazing person I can call as my brother." He whispered quietly before nodding once firmly towards the grave. After that he gently kissed the Hero's forehead before starting to carry his sleeping adopted younger brother back to the room he currently shared with Link and their youngest adopted brother Darky.
