Situations from their lives

Grasp of the white death, part 1

The surface of the frozen lake broke as he crashed into it back first. The beast had gotten a lucky strike in and sent him flying with a harsh cut across his chest. The current of the river took a swift hold of the Hylian and swept him quickly away from the only chance of getting out from underneath the ice.

Link desperately held on to the small amount of air he had as he frantically tried to get a hold of the smooth surface. There was no chance for him to fight against the strength of the moving water. The cold itself was already numbing him but he had too much to live for to give up.

Eventually he let the river lead him wherever it was going and once it calmed down enough, he started to fight against the ice again. With bit of help from the Din's Fire, which was extremely hard to bring out in a place like this, the Hero finally managed to break the surface. He shot up straight off and gasped for air.

The cold air straight off took a hold of him but Link desperately tried to ignore the death's hold on his wet body. With huge struggle, he somehow managed to pull himself off from the water and onto the ice. Shivering violently, he stood up and started to stagger forward.

Without a forest or even one tree in sight, the golden haired swordsman was fully lost. He didn't know where he had come from or where he was heading to. He simply walked towards the road he was facing in hopes of finding shelter or at least something he'd recognize to know his way.

Link wasn't certain if he was walking on snow covered ice or on hard ground. He couldn't tell if the ground was straight or doing slope of some kind. He simply forced himself to keep on moving while desperately trying to warm himself up. When the snow started to fall down, he cursed quietly and for a moment thought about just stopping. Yet, the hope of finding something worthwhile kept him going even though he was certain of it being one of the worst choices he's made.

He knew he was simply overusing the heat from Din's Fire and swapping himself from the needed strength. Yet, he couldn't care less. He knew that freezing to death would be worse choice than keeping himself warm enough to continue forward. He groaned when the gentle snowing started to run into a blizzard. All he saw anymore was just simply white all around him.

Link kept in his mind the reasons he kept on going. The people he'd leave behind if the nature took the victory over his body. He reminded himself of the mission he had been sent to and went it through in his head to get something else to think about than his current situation.

Zelda had called him over at the morning. He listened quietly as she talked about a short mountain having been covered in snow and ice. That what was odd in the situation simply was the fact that it was middle of summer and the specific mountain only gained snowy landscape during winter. Link simply nodded and promised to go check things out.

It didn't take long before the Hero was already getting up the sloping mountain's wall. He had taken along his weapons and put on the Goron Tunic for warmth. It took him about two hours when he found a stream that was rounding the mountain from the tip to the small lake by the end of the mountain. As he followed it in search of easiest ways upwards, he noticed few small lakes here and there. Yet, what he was most grateful of was the small patch of forest that seemed to grow in one side of the mountain from the bottom of the area all the way to the peak of the mountain. It gave him full knowledge of what way to go.

As he finally reached the top of the mountain after about four hour climb, he found some kind of ruins from the area. He carefully started to investigate the huge fallen rock columns and broken walls. There were few stairways that only rounded about three meters upwards before ending abruptly.

He checked everything, even the stairways, in case there were invisible areas. Yet, such didn't come into his way nor anything that could've led down into the depths of the mountains insides. In all reality, he found nothing that could've been the fault of the too early winter.

As he was walking over a lump of snow, the ground suddenly shook and crashed him face first into the cold ground. He coughed once and wiped the snow off but suddenly fell fully still as he heard an angry roar. Slowly and carefully he looked behind him and gulped in near fear as his gaze fell into the snow-white Lynel. "Shit…" He mumbled before already making a swift somersault forward to avoid the first unleashed attack from the hooved, half horse, half human, part lion monster.

Right after that he swiftly stood up to ready himself for the fight. He drew out his sword and shield while carefully watching the monster's movements. Yet, suddenly something else caught his notion. A clear, crystal like sound got him to glance behind him.

He never had a chance to avoid the attack the Ice Wizzrobe sent at him. He gasped as the spell hit into him and froze him solid. He couldn't do anything else than watch as the Lynel swung its huge double-bladed axe at him. If he hadn't been in ice, he would've screamed as the monster slashed harshly across his chest. The attack got him to fly and hit into one of the broken walls.

Luckily the impact into solid obstacle broke the ice around him and set him free. He crashed into the ground while gasping for air yet he barely had time to get ready as the Lynel was already coming at him. He swiftly got up and made a backflip just as the monster struck with the axe again. Yet, his luck wasn't along this time either as the sharp tip of the curved blade took hold of his ankle.

Link half gasped, half growled as the peak cut through his skin. He gasped at the sudden stop the monster did with its weapon to knock him off of it. He growled in pain as he crashed into the icy ground and slid few meters away. He heard the monster coming again at him so he quickly stood back up while avoiding to place any weight to his injured leg.

Yet, the Ice Wizzrobe was coming at him again with a new spell. He tried to avoid both attacks, the Lynel's and the Ice Wizzrobe's, but while avoiding the icy ball of freezing magic, he ended up straight into the axe's way. That harsh swing struck him away from the clearing and straight into the frozen river.

Link shook his head and slightly stumbled. He gasped and somehow managed to keep himself upright. "An Ice Wizzrobe… That's the fault of the too soon brought winter…" He thought while trying to come up with a plan to fight both the Lynel and the Ice Wizzrobe off from the mountain. Yet, the coldness wasn't only numbing his body but his mind too.

Link struggled to keep on thinking while he was stumbling more often than not. Eventually the coldness was starting to be too much for his eyes so he ended up walking blind. He didn't have the strength to uphold the heat of Din's Fire anymore, so the freezing wind started to strike into his clothes and skin quite swiftly.

He was shivering and almost gasping for air as he desperately tried to keep on moving. Suddenly he thought to have heard something in the whistling wind and he forced his eyes open. Yet, all he saw was the whiteness of the snow. He slightly shook his head and tried to continue on but after couple of more steps, he fell into the icy ground.

Link tried to get back up but he didn't have the strength anymore. He sighed heavily and just laid in the cold snow while feeling it pile up over him. A moment later he closed his eyes and let the darkness take over.
