Sorry for the wait. I'm finally back with a new chapter.
Thank you to gaara king of the sand for the help!
As the night wore on, Clementine's restless thoughts kept her awake. She couldn't shake the feeling that something was off, that she and her daughter were in danger. Every creak of the old cabin made her heart race, and she found herself listening intently for any sound that might suggest a threat. She knew that some of the people here didn't trust her, and she couldn't help but wonder if they had ulterior motives for bringing her and her daughter into their midst.
Clementine lay awake on the couch, her thoughts still racing. She listened to the sound of the others sleeping, feeling isolated and alone in her own thoughts. She knew that she needed to make a decision soon about whether or not to stay at the cabin.
As she lay there, she thought about all the times she had been in similar situations before. The constant fear and uncertainty that came with living in a world overrun by the undead. But this time was different. She had her daughter to think about now, and she had to make sure that Diana and Danielle were safe and cared for.
She sighed and shifted her position, feeling the weight of the decision bearing down on her. Part of her wanted to stay at the cabin, where it was warm and safe. But the other half of her knew that staying there could put them all in danger if some of the others were truly against her.
Clementine's mind raced with questions. Where would she go? How would she survive on her own with a baby and a young child?
Clementine knew that Luke and Pete were on her side, but she wasn't sure about the others. She needed to talk to someone, but she didn't know who to turn to. She wondered if Carley was still out there somewhere, looking for her, Diana, and Danielle.
Finally, after several hours of tossing and turning, Clementine made her decision. She would stay at the cabin for a little while longer, but she would be careful and keep her guard up. She would talk to the others and try to find some common ground, but she wouldn't put herself or the kids in danger.
She knew that things wouldn't be easy, but she was determined to do what was best for the kids and herself. She would survive, no matter what.
The next morning, Clementine woke up early, as she usually did. She could hear hushed voices coming from the kitchen, sounding like Luke and Pete. She gently shifted her sleeping daughter onto the couch then to Danielle's resting form and got up giving Danielle a gentle shake until the child stirred. "Hmm?"
"Lay with Diana for a bit." Clementine said. "I'll be back."
"Where are you going?" Danielle asked.
"I'll be right back." Clementine simply said. "It's okay."
Danielle was too tired to ask anymore questions and simply moved to snuggle close to baby Diana.
Clementine hesitantly made her way towards the kitchen telling a curious Sam to stay. The dog obliged, staying with the girls. As she entered the room, she found Luke and Pete sitting at the table, quietly drinking their coffee. They looked up when she entered the room, but their chatter died down quick.
"Morning," Clementine said, trying to break the silence.
"Morning," Pete greeted.
"You're up early." Luke spoke.
"So are you two." Clementine noted.
"I just got off watch duty." Luke shrugged. "And Pete's quite the early bird."
"The early bird gets the worm. Or in my case, catches the most fish." Pete said. "You ever been fishing, Clementine?"
"Yeah. I have." Clementine said, "Easiest way to get food when you're on the water… We spent a long time living on a boat…"
"Really?" Luke asked.
Clementine nodded.
"Was it better than the land?" Luke wondered.
"Not by miles." Clementine sighed.
"Well, how'd you sleep anyway?" Pete asked.
"Can't say I got much sleep…" Clementine honestly replied.
"I guess that's understandable." Luke said.
"…I know things are a little awkward right now, but I'm sure it'll get better sooner or later." Pete said.
Luke nodded in agreement.
"I know not everyone is happy about me and the kids being here," Clementine continued, "But we needed help… And honestly, it would be nice to have a safe place to stay… This cabin seems like it could be a good option. We're not here to cause any trouble, I promise you, we won't be a burden. We'll do everything we can to make sure we don't get in the way or cause problems."
There was another moment of silence before Pete spoke up. "We know that Clementine," he said. "It's just… things are complicated right now. We've been through a lot, and some of us are still dealing with our own issues. Don't let them bother you."
Clementine nodded, understanding what he meant. Everyone had all been through so much, and it was natural for emotions to be running high.
"Pete's right. They don't mean it, it just… it's hard to trust anyone these days." Luke said. "We're just worried about the safety of everyone here."
Clementine nodded, understanding where he was coming from. She knew all too well how difficult it was to trust anyone in this world.
"I get it," She said, understanding their concern. Safety was always a top priority, especially in a world where danger lurked around every corner. "But we have to find a way to work together. We're all in this together, whether we like it or not. We're all survivors in this world. It's not easy out there. We have to look out for each other."
Luke and Pete looked at each other again, and then back at Clementine.
"You're right," Luke said. "We'll do our best to make sure everyone is safe."
Clementine smiled, feeling a sense of relief. It wasn't going to be easy, but she was determined to make it work. For Danielle's sake, and for everyone else's.
"Okay," Pete finally said. "Let's start fresh. We'll figure this out together."
Clementine gave a tiny nod, feeling a sense of relief.
"Well, I'll get some breakfast started. Last thing we need are hungry or h-angry folks on our hands." Luke said.
"Breakfast… Would be nice." Clementine said with a tiny smile.
"Well sit tight, it won't take too long." Luke replied.
"Thanks Luke… I'll uh, go check in on the girls." Clementine said.
Luke and Pete nodded in response.
Clementine slowly left the kitchen, feeling a bit better. Maybe things were going to be okay after all.
Clementine let her thoughts consume her as she kept watch over her baby and Danielle. It wasn't until Diana let out a small cry and stirred that Clementine was brought back to the moment.
As Clementine sat there nursing her daughter, she couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for having Diana and Danielle in her life. She had lost so many people she cared about, but those kids were a reminder that there was still hope in the world. She was determined to keep them both safe, no matter what it took.
As she tended to Diana she thought on her current circumstance. She knew that not everyone was comfortable with having strangers in their midst, especially in a world where resources were scarce, and survival was a constant struggle.
After a while, Diana fell back asleep, and Clementine carefully laid her down on the couch. She sat there for a moment, watching her daughter's peaceful face. It was moments like this that made everything else seem bearable.
Moments ticked by before Clementine noticed the rest of the house seemed to be waking around her.
Danielle and baby Diana slept soundly- Clementine noting this was the first time the two had uninterrupted sleep for quite a while.
Most of the group didn't speak more than a word or two to her- just to acknowledge her presence, like the "good morning" she got from Alvin- or the simple nod she received from Nick, before carrying on about the day.
Rebecca, on the other hand, said not a single word.
Clementine couldn't help but feel a bit uneasy as Rebecca walked past them without even sparing a glance. She knew that the woman was still wary of her, and having a baby around- while Rebecca was clearly expecting- probably didn't make things any easier.
Still Clementine was determined to make things work. She knew that there were people in the group who didn't trust her, but she was willing to do whatever it took to earn their trust.
As she stays close to her baby, she couldn't help but wonder what Rebecca was thinking.
"I'm hungry…" Danielle's little voice pulled her out of her thoughts.
Clementine jumped slightly, she hadn't even noticed the child had woken up. She looked to the young girl who was rubbing her eyes and spoke, "I think Luke made something for breakfast."
"What is it?" Danielle yawned out.
"Not sure, he just mentioned getting some breakfast started." Clementine said.
"Oh…" Danielle said. "Are we going to stay here?"
"For now…" Clementine said. "We'll figure out what our next move is."
"I thought you'd want to leave this morning." Danielle said.
"Why did you think that?" Clementine asked.
Danielle shrugged. "Well… I don't know how to feel about everyone here. They seem so… so angry."
"They're scared, Dani. People act differently when they're scared." Clementine said.
"I know… I don't like it…" Danielle sighed.
"Hey," Clementine motioned the girl over.
Danielle moved closer to Clementine, feeling her comforting arm around her.
"We're going to be okay, kiddo." Clementine reassured the child.
"…Okay…"
"Come on, let's get you something to eat." Clementine gently picked baby Diana up and led Danielle to the kitchen.
As Clementine and Danielle made their way to the kitchen, they noticed some of the group members seated at the table. The sight of the warm food on the stove made Clementine's stomach rumble, and she knew that Danielle must be feeling hungry too.
"Good morning," Clementine said, her tone gentle. "Mind if we join you?"
"Of course not." Pete said. "I'm about to head out soon. Those fishes aren't going to catch themselves."
"Breakfast is ready, you two can help yourselves." Luke said before calling for Sam to come to the kitchen. The dog quickly rushed forward, and Luke presented him with a bowl which Sam eagerly began eating. "I'm going to try to get some sleep. Keeping watch during nightshift kicked my ass-" Luke paused looking to the children, he cleared his throat. "Kicked my… butt."
Clementine nearly rolled her eyes.
With that Luke left the room and Pete also took his leave. Nick only stayed long enough to grab some food from the stove before leaving the room as well, and Alvin must have been outside on watch. Meaning once they had all left it was just Rebecca and the newcomers.
"I guess it's just us…" Clementine said, trying to break the tension.
Rebecca sighed but still didn't say anything.
Clementine sighed, feeling frustrated. She knew that she and Rebecca were never going to be best friends, but it was hard being around someone who clearly didn't like her.
"Hi… Did… you sleep okay?" Danielle's voice was the one to break the silence.
Clementine could see the hesitation in the woman's eyes, and it made her feel a bit uncomfortable. But she was surprised that Rebecca even replied. "I should be asking you that."
"I slept better than I do out there." Danielle responded.
Rebecca's gaze seemed to soften a bit at that. "I'm sure."
Not much else was exchanged between them. Before long Sarah and Carlos joined them downstairs, Carlos shooting them a wary look while Sarah greeted them with enthusiasm.
Breakfast was awkward. Danielle stuck close to Clementine the second Carlos entered the room and despite Sarah chatting away to the young girl, Danielle didn't have much to say.
As breakfast came to an end, Sarah announced she was going upstairs, giving Danielle an invitation to join her if she wanted. Silence fell once more- as awkward and uncomfortable as before.
Carlos stood to wash his hands. "That dog shouldn't be in the kitchen."
"Luke's the one who called it in here." Rebecca scoffed.
"Well, if it's done eating it can leave now." Carlos said.
"Right…" Clementine sighed. "Sam, go."
The dog sent her sad eyes.
"You heard me. Dani, take Sam to the other room." Clementine spoke.
"Okay…" Danielle nodded, calling for Sam to follow her out of the kitchen.
Clementine held baby Diana close, sitting in silence for a moment before speaking. "I don't want to be a burden. Is there anything I can help with? Anything I can do?" she asked, trying to break the tension.
Rebecca and Carlos seemed to exchange looks, both of their expressions softening a bit.
It wasn't a complete breakthrough, but it was a start. And for Clementine, that was all that mattered. She was determined to make this work, no matter what.
"I don't want to cause any trouble," Clementine said, "but I want to help. I know that things are complicated right now, but I want to do whatever I can to make things better."
There was a moment of silence as the two looked at her, considering her words.
Finally, Carlos spoke up. "We appreciate your willingness to help, Clementine," he said. "Just… focus on your kids for now."
Clementine nodded, feeling relieved that she had spoken up. She didn't know what the future held, but she was determined to make the most of this opportunity. "…Okay… If there's anything I can do… Just say the word." Clementine said.
Carlos only nodded.
Wanting to leave the tensed atmosphere behind, Clementine left the room. She noticed Danielle petting Sam with a small smile. Clementine seated herself on the couch. As she looked between Danielle and her baby daughter, she realized that those two kids were all that mattered to her right now. She was going to do everything she could to keep them safe and happy, no matter what.
The day continued to pass by, Danielle sticking with Clementine for the most part, playing with Sam or baby Diana every now and then. However, eventually the child sighed, "Clem, can I play with Sarah?"
Clementine hesitated for a moment, considering the request. She knew that Carlos had warned them to stay away from Sarah, but she also knew that Danielle was craving interaction with someone her own age.
"Let me talk to Carlos first," Clementine said, "just to make sure it's okay."
Danielle looked disappointed, but nodded understandingly. "Okay."
Clementine stood up and made her way to where Carlos was sitting, hoping that she could convince him to let Sarah and Danielle play together.
"Hey, Carlos," she said, approaching him. "Danielle was wondering if she could play with Sarah for a little while. I wanted to make sure it's okay with you first."
Carlos looked at her warily, his expression guarded. "I don't know, Clementine. I don't think it's a good idea."
"I understand your concerns," Clementine said, "but Danielle is really lonely. She needs someone to play with. And I promise you, she's a good kid. she'll be careful."
Carlos hesitated for a moment, and Clementine could see the conflict in his eyes. Finally, he let out a sigh. "Okay, but just for a little while. And I want you to keep a close eye on them."
Clementine nodded gratefully. "Thank you, Carlos. I promise we'll be careful."
She made her way back to Danielle and gave her the good news. Danielle's face lit up with excitement, and she practically skipped over to Sarah.
Clementine watched them play for a while, feeling a sense of relief. It was good to see Danielle happy and carefree, even if it was just for a little while.
Night was approaching, Pete and Nick had returned from their run. And even during supper Clementine could feel the tension in the air, but she didn't know how to break it.
As dinner ended a group meeting was called.
Clementine knew eavesdropping was wrong, but it was hard for her not to listen to the conversation. She tried her best to make sense of what was going on. It seemed like there was some sort of disagreement about what to do with her and her kids.
She didn't want to cause any trouble, but she couldn't help feeling like she was a burden to these people. She didn't know if she should speak up or stay quiet and let them figure things out on their own.
As the conversation continued, Clementine realized that this wasn't just about her, Danielle, and Diana. There was something else going on, something that was causing tension within the group.
She didn't know what it was, but she knew that it was important. If she was going to stay here with her daughter and Danielle, she needed to understand what was happening and how she could help- it was important for her and her kids' safety.
As Clementine listened to the conversation, she could feel a knot in her stomach. The tension in the room was palpable, and she didn't know what to do.
Sarah had long since gone to bed and Danielle was on the couch beside Clementine trying to do the same.
"Are they going to kick us out?" Danielle whispered.
"Don't worry about that. Just try to get some sleep." Clementine said.
"But what if they do?" Danielle asked.
"No matter what, we'll be fine. I'll take care of you. I'll keep you save." Clementine said.
"…Okay… I trust you." Danielle said.
"Get some rest, Dani."
Danielle nodded.
Clementine held her baby daughter a little closer, feeling protective. She didn't want to leave this place, not when it was the safest option for her and the kids. But she also didn't want to cause trouble for these people, who had already taken a big risk by letting them stay.
"We can't just kick them out," Pete said firmly. "We need to figure out a way to keep everyone safe."
"I agree with Pete," Luke said. "We can't just turn them away. They're not a threat."
"But we don't know that for sure," Rebecca said, her voice shaking slightly. "We can't be too careful in these times."
Clementine felt a surge of anger at Rebecca's words, but she didn't say anything. She knew it wouldn't help the situation.
"We'll put it to a vote," Carlos said. "All in favor of letting them stay?"
Clementine couldn't help but wonder who voted in their favor and who was against them. Silence fell for a while before Rebecca breathed a heavy sigh.
"Fine," Rebecca said, her voice tight. "But if anything happens, it's on all of us."
The meeting broke up shortly after that, Rebecca stormed out of the kitchen and into the living room. She locked her gaze onto Clementine who protectively held her daughter closer. Rebecca huffed before heading up the stairs without a word.
Clementine knew that things were still going to be difficult. She was going to have to work hard to gain their trust and prove that she and the girls were worth the risk.
As the days passed, Clementine found herself settling into a routine at the cabin. She took care of the kids during the day, making sure that Diana was fed, changed, and entertained, and making sure Danielle's needs were attended to. In the evenings, she spent time helping with chores around the cabin and even volunteering to help keep watch- though the group was reluctant to allow it at first.
She had even started to build a tentative relationship with some of the members of the group. Luke and Pete had been kind to her from the beginning, and she had grown to appreciate Carlos's cautious approach to their situation. Rebecca was still guarded around her, but Clementine sensed that the woman was starting to warm up to her.
Despite the tension, Clementine did her best to make the most of the situation. She spent time with Luke, who had quickly become a friend and confidant. They shared stories about their pasts and talked about their hopes for the future. Clementine found herself feeling more and more comfortable around him, and she even found herself smiling and laughing more often than she had in a long time.
Even Sarah, who had initially been warned to stay away from them, was having play visits with Danielle throughout the day. She also enjoyed spending time with Sarah, who had warmed up to her and Danielle over the past week. They played games and shared stories, and Clementine found herself growing fond of the shy girl.
But there were still moments when Clementine felt uneasy. She couldn't shake the feeling that some of the group members were hiding something from her. She had overheard conversations between Rebecca and Carlos, where they spoke in hushed tones about a group of people who were looking for them. It made her wonder who these people were and what they wanted.
In spite of her concerns, Clementine tried her best to stay positive and make the best of the situation. She was grateful to have a roof over her head and food to eat, and she was determined to keep her Diana and Danielle safe.
