Chapter 3: Splitting up?

Ron walked down the street towards his own house, reflecting upon his little incident with the Possibles, he couldn't hold down the smirk splattered across his face. 'The only way that could have been better, was if I had punched that asshole before I left!' Ron's grin grew even wider, imagining what it would have been like to feel James's face crack beneath his fist.

That asshole's timing couldn't have been better, even if Ron had orchestrated the entire confrontation himself! It was simply a golden opportunity!

The blonde teen arrived back home, walking into his room and promptly locking the door behind him. It was quiet, no one in sight, Rufus was currently… out. Ron had made certain to send him to… a nice vacation spot, on some beautiful tropical island.

The little hairless creature could be his greatest ally… or his downfall. Right now, he just needed to keep Rufus busy, happy, and away from his plans- until Ron managed to sway him to his side. It shouldn't prove to be too difficult, seeing as Rufus was his pet and friend… But if that was the case, why hadn't he joined Ron the first time around- when he and that moron Drakken had been swapped? It didn't matter at the moment, Ron had a few more important things to look forward to.

The monkey master's phone sounded off, the annoying ringtone instantly making it painfully obvious who was calling. 'Faster than I thought it would be… Well, whatever… it was bound to happen.' He picked his cell up and pushed the accept button, it was probably best to get this over with.

"Ron?" he was greeted, the Possible teen's voice quieter than he'd ever heard her, his smile grew bigger.

"Hey KP…" Ron replied, attempting to sound as uncomfortable as he could- he had to stay in character, after all!

"So… I've talked to my dad… I just want to know what happened, you know… from your perspective?" the redheaded heroine explained unsurely.

"My perspective?" Ron parroted, careful to clearly convey his honest confusion. 'What could James have said to her?' he wondered.

"Yeah, my dad said that he was just having a nice talk with you about what your plans were… for after school? He told me you suddenly flew off the handle" the girl elaborated. It sounded like Kim was pacing back and forth in her room, as she talked to him.

Ron recognized her tone as the same one she used when she was stressed out about something big, he hadn't heard it for months! Or, more precisely, ever since they'd started dating. "Really… is that what he told you?" the blonde teen shot back, allowing some irritation to slip into his tone. It was extremely hard to suppress his emotions at the moment.

"Y-Yeah… I mean… I just wanted to talk to you, clear this mess up… is-is that okay?" Kim asked, choosing a soothing tone to assuage his anger.

"That's fine…" Ron claimed, despite feeling the complete opposite. "But I do wonder if that will be okay with HIM…" Ron replied. "Apparently, James never thought I was good enough for you. He said that I should change, if I want HIM to allow me to keep dating you-"

"W-What?!" Kim shouted out, cutting Ron off. "He said that?!"

'What's the matter, did that asshole lie to you too? How shocking!' Ron mused, before confirming her suspicions. "Yep, he sure did. …and to think, he was hiding it all these years. It's probably why he always calls me Ronald, too. I bet he only allowed me to stay friends with you, because someone like me would never have a chance… Or maybe he just thought that you'd outgrow me, at some point…" the blonde teen speculated. He'd known- for years- that James had never really seen him as anything more than an annoying pet, running around Kim's legs.

"Ron, he doesn't think that!" Kim shouted, making Ron pull the phone away from his ear. "Even if he does… what does it matter? I don't care what he thinks! I don't care what ANYONE thinks! I care about you, Ron!" she declared- and quite loudly, too.

In any normal situation he would agree to forget all about it, especially when he knew that was the absolute truth. 'Too bad for you…' Ron mused. "I know, Kim…" he assured her, hearing the relief in her loud exhale. "But… I just can't- I mean, knowing what he's thinking about me? Every time I came over, all of these years…" Ron elaborated, pausing a second before continuing. "I don't… don't think this is going to work out…"

The monkey master could hear silence on the other side, it was painfully sweet.

"Us… together… I'm sorry, Kim…" Ron had to hold onto something, to keep himself from cracking up.

"W-W-What? Ron- us? Y-you can't-" Kim tried to deny. Her voice was much quieter, more frantic- frightened by his words. There was just no way her Ron, her best friend, had just said those words.

"I'm sorry… Bye KP, it was fun… while it lasted…" Ron mumbled in his best 'sad voice', moving to hang up the phone. He could hear the girl yell a "wait" …before the room fell quiet once more.

Ron was left to stew in the silence, he leaned back in his computer chair. He started chuckling to himself, before his mirth evolved into loud (borderline mad) laughter. All in all, he was having a GREAT day! 'Man, I can't wait to see her face!'

X-=-=-=-=-=-=-X

"WHAT DID YOU SAY TO HIM?!" Kim borderline screamed at her father. James had been busy watching television in the living room, like he did every day after coming home from work.

The older Possible was quite shocked to find his only daughter pointing her anger at him, when he'd never witnessed Kim so much as raising her voice to anyone- and certainly not to HIM. "Kimmi-cub, slow down, what did I say to WHO?" he asked, clearly confused as to what had caused her to become so enraged out of nowhere.

"TO RON! WHAT DID YOU SAY TO RON?!" the girl screamed, letting more of her anger out.

"T-To Ronald? I already told-" James began.

"What's the matter Kim, is everything okay?!" her mother exclaimed. Ann had rushed out of the kitchen, as soon as she'd heard her daughter's screaming.

"ASK HIM!" Kim declared, pointing at the man.

"Honey, please, calm down…" Ann put her hand on Kim's shoulder, in the hope of calming her temper. She pointed her gaze towards her husband, waiting for his response.

"All I did was talk to Ronald… about what he planned to do after school. He suddenly got angry about something, then walked out the door-" the older man swore.

"That's it? It doesn't sound too serios…" the Possible matriarch opined, unable to see what had left her daughter so furious.

"HE BROKE UP WITH ME!" the redheaded teen spat back, shocking both of her parents.

"Kimmi… I was only trying to give him some advice! He just took it the wrong way!" the older man tried to explain casually. "I'm sure you'll be back together, after he's had some time to cool down!"

"T-That's right, Kim!" Ann chimed in, backing up her spouse's words. "All couples have fights, from time to time! It's nothing to get worked up about" she explained. Kim was smarter than the average teenager, it was very strange to see her angry (as opposed to sulking over this).

"HE SAID HE'S DONE WITH ME! AND NOT ONLY AS MY BOYFRIEND!" the heroine screamed even louder.

"Wha-" the older man began, his wife cutting him off.

"JAMES! What did you say to him?!" Ann yelled at her husband. Ron and her daughter had been friends essentially all their lives. They were partners in saving the world and a couple who she'd wished for years would get together! This could NOT be as simple as he was claiming.

"Nothing, I swear! I only said-"

"YOU NEVER EVEN LIKED HIM! ALWAYS LOOKING DOWN AT HIM, NOT EVEN CALLING HIM BY HIS NAME!" the now hysterical teen shouted, starting to cry.

"I always called Ronald by his-"

"HIS NAME IS RON! AND HE'S-HE'S…" Kim choked out between sobs.

Ann was quick to act, hugging her girl as firmly as she could, trying to calm her down. Kim refused to let her, slipping out of the older woman's grasp before running to her room. The force of her door slamming nearly shook the house, followed by the muffled sobbing of their eldest child.

"You'd better go and talk to her…" James declared, throwing the responsibility at his wife.

"I will later… she's too angry right now…" Ann's eyes glanced at the stairway leading to the second floor, before staring at her spouse. "Now… mind telling me what you REALLY said to him?"

James sighed in annoyance. "I already told you-"

"No… I meant what you ACTUALLY said… Don't think I didn't notice that you fumbled a bit…" she insisted, cutting off his excuses, she'd known him long enough.

"I didn't fumble! …and I already told you what I said to him!" James insisted, his tone heating up as he spoke.

"Really?! Then maybe you can explain to me why Ron- our daughter's boyfriend, partner, and best friend for all these years- decided to suddenly break things off with her completely?! After you decided to 'talk' to him?!" Ann yelled back.

"I don't know!" the man shouted, getting up from his seat. "I just wanted him to prove that he was serious about Kim! I explained to him that, if he wanted to date her, he needed to start-"

"If he's serious?!" Ann shouted, like she hadn't in years, she wanted to laugh at her spouse's words. "This is Ron! RON! You remember what he's done for our little girl so far?! What he means to her?! He saved her life- as well as ours!"

"She returned the favor! She saved him as well! More times than he did her!" James shot back.

"Do you think she even cares about that, after all this time?! This is not some debt to be paid, or a contest!" the redheaded matriarch yelled back. "Show me one person that would do a fraction of what he's done for her!" Ann challenged, her voice started to grow weak from yelling so much. "…and if he wants to date her? Since when is it your- or even our- decision in the first place?"

"I'm her father! We are her parents, of course we get a say in it!" James growled angrily.

Ann looked skeptical. "Really now? If I recall, my father never approved of you… ever! So, you're telling me that I should have listened at the time and broke things off with you… just because he said so?" Ann questioned, her arms folded as she waited for his answer.

"That's not the same! I had a goal in mind, I studied to get to it! He hasn't even tried to make anything of himself! You can't tell me that you're okay with someone like that wasting our daughter's time!" the Possible male screamed, finally allowing his real feelings to be known.

"Who cares if he has, or hasn't?! I care about Kim being happy! All those other details can come later!" Ann wasn't sure what else she could say that would allow him to understand. "You'd rather she dates someone who would make her miserable, as long as he has a fancy degree like you do?"

"What does it even matter now?!" James turned his back to his wife, grabbing his keys. "What's done is done! If anything, she'll thank me later after she's calmed down…" James declared, shrugging on his coat and walking out the door.

Ann didn't bother stopping him, what was the point? James had already made up his mind about the whole situation. It didn't matter what the both of them could do together to save the world… how both her and Ron had jobs waiting for them at Global Justice, all they had to do was say the word… how Ron was still a millionaire from his royalty checks… or even the fact that he could keep their daughter safe and happy- without doing anything beyond just being there.

All that mattered to James was a silly piece of paper…

Ann could only pray that this whole mess would get sorted out… for her little girl's sake.

Morning had come, and with it a start of a new day. Ron Stoppable stepped into school, his hands inside his pockets and his bag lazily at his side.

The blonde teen could tell he was getting a few curious looks, it was quite easy to guess why that was. His little 'conversation' with the moron from before had attracted far more attention than he would have liked it to- but it would be a lie to say that he didn't enjoy the smattering of fearful looks he was receiving.

Like a bunch of sheep that had spotted a glimpse of the very big wolf hiding among them all along. 'It's about time… Apparently, my name was too hard for these idiots to recall before… Not that it matters now…' Ron mused, a tiny smirk upon his face as he arrived at his locker. 'Not much longer now…' he vowed, before noticing someone approaching from his side.

"Morning Ron!" greeted an all too happy Monique, as she approached him.

"Hey, morning Mon" he responded, trying to sound as normal as he could.

Apparently, the dark-skinned teen was not fooled- she graced him with an odd look. "You okay? Seems like something's bothering you…"

'Yeah, you!' the blonde ex sidekick desperately wanted to reply, but kept it to himself. "No… it's nothing."

"Is it because of what happened with that guy?" She moved closer, poking Ron in the side with her elbow. "Don't worry about it! He definitely had it coming!" the girl assured him, proving that she also only saw Ron's good side. "By the way… where's the missus? I thought you two were showing up together now" she joked, it wasn't the first time she'd compared them to a married couple.

"Who… Kim?" Ron asked 'dumbly', making sure to keep his voice nice and clear. "Yeah… I don't think that's going to happen again…"

"What? Not going to- is it because of the missus comment, I-" Monique asked, her tone worried.

"No… nothing like that. We just broke up yesterday… so there's not going to be-" the blonde monkey master clarified.

"YOU AND KIM BROKE UP?!" Monique didn't ask so much as screamed, as loudly as she could. Her voice echoed down the halls, everyone fell completely silent.

"Wow… thanks for that Mon, I really needed this ringing in my ears…" the blonde teen joked, already feeling the ripples that would come from the knowledge spreading.

The ravenette teen was already upon him, grabbing his shoulders and shaking him. "What?! Why? When? No… WHY?!" Monique demanded, her voice becoming more and more frantic as she went.

"Monique, mind letting me go? People might get the wrong idea-" Ron reasoned, hoping to convince the fashionista to relinquish her hold on him. She only shook him harder.

"WHY?! Why did you two break up?!" the girl kept asking, ignoring the looks their peers were giving them.

By this point, the blonde monkey master was getting annoyed. Ron grabbed her arms and pried her away from him- gently, of course… he didn't want to cause a scene. Well… not any more than they already had. "Why? It just didn't work out…" Ron noticed she was about to ask again, he decided to beat Monique to the punch and throw her a sliver of information. "If you want the reason you need to ask Kim, I'd rather not talk about it…" That seemed to shut Monique up for the moment, she seemed to be lost in thought.

"Fine, I'll ask her… I don't want to force you to talk about it. But don't think- for a second- that I'll leave it at that, if it's over something silly!" Monique declared, rushing away in a hurry.

Ron was finally left alone to stew in silence. He listened to the whispers all around him, his peers believing that Ron couldn't hear them. 'You'd think they'd never seen this kind of drama before… Maybe it's because it had something to do with Possible? Bunch of idiots…' Ron mused, closing his locker and walking towards his class, already wishing he'd decided to skip this shitshow.

'I could have just made the excuse that I was too emotionally hurt to come for a few days… I suppose that's on me…' the blonde teen reflected. He kept moving forward, there was no point in regretting it. What he had to do was infinitely more important than worrying about some gossiping brats.

He didn't pay any mind to several sets of eyes that were staring at him with great interest…

X-=-=-=-=-=-=-X

The redheaded heroine laid in her bed, the covers over her head. Her whole body was shaking, a cold feeling gripping her entire being like she'd never felt before.

She didn't want to talk to anyone…

She didn't want to see anyone…

She didn't want to do anything…

What else could she do at this point? When her body was so weak… her face still wet, her eyes burning as she wiped them on her bedcovers. The heroine prayed for the thoughts to stop, to no longer torment her over and over.

'Bye Kim…'

Two simple words inspired her to bury her face even deeper, starting to cry all over again, as she realized that it was over… At some point she reasoned that maybe it would have been better if they'd never started dating in the first place. At least that way, she wouldn't have lost him completely… But Kim couldn't say it and really mean it, she just loved him too much to have refused to try and give 'them' a chance. The sort of warm and fuzzy feelings that kept her world turning- long before they'd ever started dating. What helped make Kim who she was, pushing her forward… Without Ron next to her, what she could she even do now? Did she even want to do anything anymore?

Kim had tried to call Ron a few times- to try and talk to him, to explain the situation and ask him to forgive her… Ron must have blocked her number, he hadn't done that to ANYONE- for all the years she'd known him. But, he'd done it to HER…

Kim's parents had visited a few hours earlier. Her father had walked inside her room, saying that she was taking this way too hard. That it was 'for the best' and 'now she could focus on what was really important', before moving on with her life with someone who was better in every way.

Her response was to simply scream at James, at the top of her lungs, to get out of her room and away from her. 'I hate you' she repeated obsessively, even after he'd already left.

Ann had entered Kim's room shortly after she'd stopped screaming, James having already left for work… Her husband could have tried a bit harder to listen to their little girl- but ultimately, he'd concluded that it was a hassle that his wife was better suited for… He had important work to do, after all.

Ann would have talked with her dear spouse about his casual disregard for their daughter's issues- but quickly forgot upon the sight of her strong girl looking so hurt, so full of pain… it left Ann heartbroken.

She had approached her daughter to comfort her- Kim latched onto her mother, weeping on and on. The older redhead had wanted to go over and talk with Ron herself, in order to make him understand that this was all a big misunderstanding… and to make sure James never talked to him again. The only issue was that Ann couldn't leave her girl alone at the moment.

Rubbing her back, hugging her, whispering that everything was going to be okay over and over seemed to do the trick. Kim finally fell asleep, her exhaustion finally taking over.

From what Doctor Possible had seen, Kim was in no way capable of heading to school- let alone a mission- in her current state. Ann grabbed her daughter's Kimmunicator, heading out of the room.

She had a call to make…

Ron Stoppable was having quite the uneventful day so far, all things considered. He sat quietly in class, biding his time until he could begin working on his real goal. Everyone avoided him even more now, making it increasingly apparent that he was the outcast of Middleton High.

'They probably think that I broke things off with Possible because of that muscle-headed fool… Well, whatever the reason, it doesn't really matter…' he mused to himself with a tiny smile. Anything that would keep others away from him was a good thing.

"YOU!" screeched a female voice a few feet away from him, the blonde teen turning his head in that direction lazily.

'Again? Didn't she learn the last time?' he mused, spotting a familiar brunette approaching him. "What do you want, Bonnie? I'm not in the mood. Even if I was… I don't have any time for your crap…"

"I would advise you to watch what you say to me… You wouldn't want anyone to overhear you, now would you?" she asked, her tone confident, the smirk on her face daring him to act.

Ron glanced behind the entitled teen, spotting the rest of the cheer squad (minus Possible). They were all standing there, staring at him critically.

"Well, color me impressed… You brought a little backup, afraid I might hurt your feelings?" the blonde boy chuckled, loudly enough for her to hear.

"No, they're here in case you forget your place again!" the brunette cheerleader growled, pointing angrily at Ron. "Don't think that, just because I was alone, you can threaten me" she hissed, fury in her eyes.

"Little old me?" Ron questioned, laughing once more. "All I did was offer you some advice… and a good time… Heh, didn't think the Queen Bitch was such a prude… so sensitive…" Ron declared, his tone mocking, he stared at her red face.

"Queen bit- what did you just call me, you-" she demanded, her face on the verge of exploding.

"What… I'm wrong? Also, why don't you call me your favorite nickname?" he challenged, moving closer.

The cheerleader froze as Ron crept forward, the rest of the team tensing up.

"Come on… you have your little eye-candy posse backing you up, right? So why don't you call me what you usually do?" Ron asked, a glint in his eye.

Bonnie glanced away, refusing to look at him- or even talk.

"Come on… you do LOVE to call me that…" He even went so far as to tilt his head to the side. "Well, here's your chance…"

Bonnie refused to back away, fidgeting in place. She was completely quiet, as if waiting for him to do something.

'Is she trying to make me do something that will get me in trouble?' Ron pondered, it wouldn't be the first time she'd done so. But, she'd only ever went that extra mile when he was with Kim. 'So, what is she- wait a second…' Ron noticed how she continued fidgeting, twitching ever so slightly.

She was scared- terrified even, of being so close to him… His buffoon side had been scared on a regular basis, so it was easy for him to recognize the subtle signs in others. But, if Bonnie was so frightened… why come over and antagonize him?

Was this some sort of test? Or, maybe just-

"Give me your phone…" the blonde boy suddenly ordered calmly. Bonnie flinched just a bit, she lifted her head to glance at him.

There seemed to be a brief pause from the brunette teen, thoughts passing through her mind. After a few moments she reached into her pocket, pulling out her phone before shakily presenting it to him.

Ron simply grabbed the small device, starting to type something into it without a word. After few moments he simply handed the phone back to her, turning around and walking away.

As he rounded the corner, he could see out of the corner of his eye Bonnie reading the little message he'd left her. The girl quickly put away her phone, as the rest of her 'friends' approached to check on her.

It was an amusing sight, that was for sure… Ron couldn't wait for what was to come.
