(S1EP3 - Dead In The Water)
« Non ! J'ai pas besoin que tu viennes ! » (No! I don't need you to come!)
« Ça fait bientôt un mois que t'es là-bas et t'as toujours rien trouvé concernant ta mère! Je veux juste t'aider Alina! » (You've been there for almost a month and you still haven't found anything about your mother! I just wanna help you Alina!)
« Crois-moi j'ai déjà bien assez d'aide ici. » (Believe me, I already have enough help here.)
« Les Winchesters? Comment ça se passe avec eux? » (The Winchesters? How's it going with them?)
Alina let out a long sigh, not knowing what to answer to this simple question from her friend. She glanced inside the Cafe where she and the brothers had stopped for lunch, and spotted the oldest, throwing a seductive smile at the seductive waitress named Wendy. Unfortunately for him, Sam returned and quickly brought him back to reality. Even from the outside, Alina could read the annoyance on Dean's face when the waitress left the two busy boys.
« Alina ? T'es toujours là ? » (Alina? Are you still here?)
Lucie's voice took the young woman out of her thoughts.
« Désolée j'étais en train de... » (Sorry I was just...)
She was suddenly able to read on the faces of her fellow travelers that they were arguing, and like most of their arguments, this one had to be about Sam's impatience to find their parents. Alina felt like she was spending her days preventing the brothers from killing each other. Obviously she wouldn't escape it today either.
« Lucie je suis désolée je dois aller m'occuper de Crétin 1 avant qu'il ne saute au cou de Crétin 2. » (Lucie I'm sorry I have to go take care of Moron 1 before he jumps to Moron 2's neck.)
« Attends, qui est qui ? » (Wait, who's who?)
« Ça dépend des jours. » (It depends on the days.)
She smiled when she heard the laughter of the friend she missed so much, but she also knew that she couldn't go home until she found her mother. No matter how long it would take.
« Je t'appelle bientôt, promis. » (I'll call you soon, I promise.)
« Surtout sois prudente Alina. » (Just be careful, Alina.)
« Je suis toujours prudente ! » (I'm always being careful!)
« Non tu l'es pas... » (No you're not...)
Alina smiled one last time before hanging up and going back inside, putting the phone back in her jacket. As she had predicted, she found the brothers in an agitated conversation. "I'm the one that's been with him every single day for the past two years, while you've been off to college going to pep rallies. We will find dad, but until then, we're gonna kill everything bad between here and there. Okay?"
Alina decided that Sam rolling his eyes was the perfect moment for her to slide into the conversation. "What's up? Found anything in the newspaper?"
Dean was supposed to be looking for a new case near them in the newspaper, and even if she could very well see the article he had surrounded about the death of an 18-year-old girl in a lake, she still waited for his reply. After a few seconds of silence she laid her eyes on him, noticing that his were focused on the waitress' ass.
Alina sighed and the slap she gave him behind the head, immediately woke him up from his trance. "Come on Winchester! Can't you see she's not interested in you?"
"And how could you know that Frenchy?"
"Because if she was..." She put her hand in the back pocket of her jeans, and took out the paper napkin with numbers written on it in red, followed by a little heart. "She wouldn't have given me her number as soon as we arrived."
Dean stared at the napkin for a short moment, opening and closing his mouth several times before looking back at her. "Shut up, there's no way that's her number."
"Oh really?" Alina felt the challenge in his tone.
"Okay guys." Sam tried to stop them. "About the case, how far away is Lake Manitoc?"
His best friend was glad to hear him talk about the case as if he actually wanted to go. She always knew how to get him to do something he clearly didn't wanna do. But she also needed to teach Dean a lesson now, so she ignored him and took a step closer to his brother. "Watch me."
She crushed the napkin in Dean's hand, and grabbed a new one before walking towards the beautiful waitress coming out of the kitchens. Dean watched her pretend to have lost the previous napkin when she went out to make a phone call, and his jaw dropped when Wendy took out her red pen to rewrite her number, and this time kiss the napkin before returning it to Alina. The two women shared a flirtatious smirk, before Alina went back to Dean, proudly waving the identical phone number. "So Lake Manitoc, huh?" She continued in the most natural way. "You'll tell me about it in the car. Let's go."
The brothers watched her leaving again, already outside when they looked at each other, Sam amused at Dean's shocked expression.
"Dude that was hot." Dean finally admitted, making his brother cringe.
"You're gross." He stood up and started to leave too.
"Come on Sammy! Grow up!" He took some money out of his pocket, threw it on the table, and quickly ran after them with a big childish grin on his face.
Their new destination was indeed very close. In no time, the three hunters found themselves in front of the victim's house. Sophie Carlton, 18, the third Lake Manitoc drowning of the year. Authorities dragged the water, but none of the bodies were found. Something was definitely going on with this lake.
Despite everything, Alina couldn't help but hum the air of the last music they had listened to during their short trip. "With love we'll find a way..."
"Alina." Sam reprimanded her while Dean was knocking on the door. "I don't think the Carltons are in a karaoke mood right now."
Dean tried to hide his smile when Alina cast an offended look at his brother. "Either I use my mouth to sing or I use your head as a drum Sammy."
He didn't have time to answer since the front door opened at the same time, on what they assumed to be the victim's brother.
"Will Carlton?" Dean asked.
"Yeah, that's right."
"I'm Agent Ford. This is Agent Hamill and Agent Fisher. We're with the US Wildlife Service." He announced, holding up his fake ID.
"Geek." Alina whispered loud enough for only Dean to hear her.
She then spotted the local newspaper on the floor, and discreetly took it before Will Carlton brought them close to the dock, where his father was sitting on a bench like a frozen statue. Alina felt bad for him. She was doing her best not to spend her entire time thinking about death during a hunt, but seeing the families of the victims remained the hardest part for her. It reminded her of her mother after her father's death.
It reminded her of the last time she had seen Charlie, just laying in her bed, frozen like that man on the bench. Her eyes red and absently staring at the ceiling, she hadn't been able to give Alina a single look when she had left their apartment with a last goodbye.
It had been several months now, but Alina could still feel the guilt rise in her throat and form a knot that made her want to vomit. The boys were still talking with the brother, and thankfully didn't notice her turning around to wipe away a single tear, and walking towards the car. She stopped at the Impala, and took out the newspaper to quickly read the first pages and try to distract herself. She couldn't let herself get overwhelmed in the middle of a hunt, and more importantly, in front of the Winchesters.
When the brothers came back, they instantly looked relieved to find her, leaning on the hood of the car with the newspaper in her hands. "There you are Frenchy."
Alina looked back at them with a big smile on her face. No one could've guessed by her cheerful expression, that she had been close to a huge panic attack a few minutes earlier. No one except the one who had spent so much time studying her body language. And Sam would've seen it too, if he wasn't so upset about not finding his father.
"So you guys found out anything useful?"
Dean noticed how quick she was to change the subject, and decided to let it go for now. "She was a varsity swimmer so she definitely didn't just drown."
"No splashing, no signs of distress, no shadows in the water."
"And nothing strange about the lake either."
Alina listened to them, until her attention was grabbed by an article about the lake and the dam.
"Hey!" Dean snapped his fingers in front of her, making her jump, groan, and hit his hand away from her face.
"I told you not to do that Winchester!"
"You weren't listening."
"I was doing my job!"
"Right. Keep doing that, and maybe when you're over you could come with us to the police station to get some real informations."
He got inside the car as soon as he finished his sentence, and Alina noticed that Sam was already sitting on the passenger's seat. She didn't like to search for clues at police stations. Hunters and policemen loved guns but weren't besties.
But she couldn't let the two Winchesters go on their own, and get arrested because of one stupid mistake. So she went with them, reading the rest of the article on the road.
And so they found themselves talking with the Sheriff of the city who did not seem to have the slightest suspicion about them, but seemed rather annoyed by their presence. "Now, I'm sorry, but why does the Wildlife Service care about an accidental drowning?"
"You sure it's accidental?" Sam ignored his tone. "Will Carlton saw something grab his sister."
"Like what?"
"That's what we're trying to find out." Alina pointed out. "We're just doing our job here."
Jake, the Sheriff, nodded at her answer and let them walk into his office. "Here, sit, please."
He motioned to the two chairs in front of the desk and Dean was fast to sit down, glancing back at Alina with a mocking smile. The young woman rolled her eyes, and turned to Sam who was already offering her the second seat, but she discreetly shook her head to refuse the offer with a smile.
The three hunters were now facing the man sitting behind his desk. "There are no indigenous carnivores in that lake. There's nothing even big enough to pull down a person, unless it was the Loch Ness Monster."
"Yeah." Dean laughed. "Right."
Sam glanced at his brother, knowing pretty well what he must have been thinking, while Alina was holding a laugh.
"Will Carlton was traumatized, and sometimes the mind plays tricks. Still... We dragged that entire lake. We even ran a sonar sweep, just to be sure, and there was nothing down there."
"That's weird, though." Dean said. "I mean, that's, that's the third missing body this year."
"If you didn't even found the bodies..." Alina started in a serious tone. "Maybe you just didn't found the thing that killed them either."
"Look... These are people from my town. These are people I care about."
"We know." Dean said in a calmer voice that made Alina realized how impatient she must have seemed. But she didn't even have time to apologize since Jake spoke before her.
"Anyway... All this... It won't be a problem much longer."
"What do you mean?" Dean asked.
"Well, the dam, of course."
Alina could almost see the big question mark above the brothers. She felt relieved that at least one of them had done some research to avoid looking suspicious in front of the police.
"Yeah it's falling apart, right?" She made it look like she was talking to Jake, while she was actually trying to give informations to the boys. "And the feds won't give you the grant to repair it, so they've opened the spillway. In another six months, there won't be much of a lake. There won't be much of a town, either. But as Federal Wildlife, we already knew that."
She said that last sentence looking at Dean. The boy ignored her gaze behind him and just smiled as if he indeed knew it all. "Exactly."
A young woman suddenly entered the room, saving Dean from the humiliation of Alina's useful knowledge. "Sorry, am I interrupting? I can come back later."
The boys stood up like perfect gentlemen, and Alina gently smiled at her.
"Gentlemen, this is my daughter." Jake announced, and Dean instantly walked towards the woman to shake her hand with his usual Dean Winchester smile.
"It's a pleasure to meet you. I'm Dean."
"Andrea Barr. Hi."
"Hi." He repeated.
Alina quickly stood between them to save the poor girl. "Nice to meet you Andrea. I'm Alina, this is Sam. We're from the Wildlife Service."
"They're here about the lake." Jake informed his daughter.
"Oh. Nice to meet you too Alina." The two women smiled at each other, until a little boy interrupted them, shyly appearing behind Andrea.
"Oh, hey there. What's your name?" Dean tried to talk to him, but the only response he got was the boy walking away in silent. Andrea followed him, and Alina almost felt her distress as she watched her join the boy. Clearly, she was a worried and exhausted mother.
"His name is Lucas." Jake told them as they watched Andrea giving her son some crayons in the main room.
"Is he okay?" Sam asked before Alina could.
"My grandson's been through a lot. We all have." The Sheriff then stood up and joined them next to the door. "Well, if there's anything else I can do for you, please let me know."
They all walked out of the office and before the three hunters left, Dean turned back to Jake, and most importantly, to Andrea. "Thanks. You know, now that you mentioned it, could you point us in the direction of a reasonably priced motel?"
"Lakefront Motel." She replied. "Go around the corner. It's about two blocks south.
"Two... Would you mind showing us?"
"Come on man..." Alina sighed and shared a hopeless look with Sam.
But Andrea simply chuckled. "You want me to walk you two blocks?"
"Not if it's any trouble."
"Of course it's not." Alina added next to him in a sarcastic tone. "How could it be trouble for her to just cross the road?"
Dean faked a laugh and put his hand on her shoulder to strongly tap it. Andrea looked at them for a moment in amusement, then agreed. "I'm headed that way anyway." She turned to Jake. "I'll be back to pick up Lucas at three." She embraced her son already focused on his drawings. "We'll go to the park, okay, sweetie?"
Alina watched her, kiss Lucas on the head without getting any sign of response from him, and she didn't know why she felt like crying at the sight for a second. It wasn't like her to act like that. Yes, seeing Mr Carlton's state had brought back some really messed up memories, but that was different. Almost as if she was feeling an emotion that didn't belong to herself. Luckily she forgot about it once they got out of the police station and started to walk on the street. She even frowned at her absurd thoughts.
The three hunters followed Andrea silently, until Dean decided to start a conversation. "So, cute kid."
"Thanks." She just replied.
Alina cringed at her friend as he wouldn't give up when they crossed the street. "Kids are the best, huh?"
The woman glanced back at him, ignored him and kept walking. They finally stopped in front of the LAKEFRONT MOTEL. "There it is. Like I said, two blocks."
Sam and Alina both thanked her, and she turned to Dean after giving them one last smile. "Must be hard, with your sense of direction, never being able to find your way to a decent pickup line."
Alina didn't even try to hide her amusement when Andrea left them with a completely silent Dean.
"Kids are the best?" Sam immediately mocked him. "You don't even like kids."
"I love kids!"
"Name three children that you even know."
The young woman really couldn't stop herself from laughing. Seeing Dean lifting his thumb to start the count and coming up with nothing after thinking for a moment, was definitely her breaking point. Sam didn't wait to long and waved a hand before walking into the motel without them. Dean scratched his head, embarrassed by Alina's laugh. "I'm thinking!"
"Sure you are. You know I never understood how every women could fall so easily for Dean Winchester the Bad Boy, but Dean Winchester the Shy Boy is like a car crash in slow motion."
"What?" The man was still in shock, so at first he didn't really hear what Alina had just said to him. He finally got it when she stepped closer to put her hands on his shoulders with a fake compassionate look.
"I mean...I'm probably the only woman who's ready to stay by your side no matter what, even though I've known you for more than two days. So, just know that if you ever need some flirting advices, I'll be more than happy to help."
Dean just stared at her for a moment, trying to find a good comeback, but when he failed he simply rolled his eyes, shook his shoulders to make Alina's hands fall from them and followed Sam inside the motel. Alina smiled at him and quickly entered the building.
LATER
The three hunters were now in their room, Sam working on his laptop, Dean going through his clothing, and Alina taking a nap on the bed she shared with Dean. Neither of them wanted to sleep next to Sam. First because he had the bad habit of struggling quite violently in his sleep when he had a nightmare, but also because they wanted to give him all the space he needed. He slept so little that they couldn't take the risk of waking him up at the slightest movement.
Alina had collapsed on the bed as soon as she arrived in the room, and as very often, she slept on her side with her mouth wide open. When they were younger and found themselves making long trips in the back of the Impala with their fathers, Dean would always let the girl sleep on his shoulder, even if he knew perfectly well that she would start drooling on his jacket. He just liked to see her in such a peaceful state.
But Sam had gathered all the informations they needed about the case after a few hours, so he now had to wake her up, to go talk to their only eye-witness. Sam had already left the room to go wait in the car, ignoring his brother's complains about why he had to be the one to wake the sleeping girl up. But as soon as he found himself alone with her, he just sighed and sat down on the bed next to Alina.
Unfortunately, he couldn't know about the nightmare that was haunting the young hunter's mind at the same time. She was back in that dark room. Everything felt so real, she almost thought she had never left. The horrible smell of rotted eggs and burnt matches, the pain of the tight rope squeezing her wrists and holding her hands behind her back. But the most terrifying detail, was the hand that suddenly grabbed her by the throat to strangle her just enough to pine her exhausted body against the cold wall behind her. She desperately looked into her friend's eyes and found nothing but darkness. He was enjoying seeing her like that. Completely wrecked.
If her mouth hadn't been taped, and she had been able to speak, she didn't know if she would've begged or insulted the man in front of her. She couldn't move, she couldn't cry, she could only close her eyes and wait for him to leave.
After a few seconds, she felt his body leaning down, and his lips slightly touching her ear when he spoke to her for the first time since she had been locked up in this room.
"Alina..."
She instantly shot her eyes open, grabbed his arm with her right hand, and pulled him closer as she was lifting her left elbow to hit him in the face. She then pushed him to get on top of him, took the dagger in her boot, and put it down on his throat to stop him from moving.
"Woah! Easy Frenchy it's just me! It's Dean!"
It took a short moment for her vision to improve from the blur she was seeing, but when she finally recognized the face of her childhood friend, Dean Winchester, her anger changed into guilt in the split of a second. "Shit! Dean I'm sorry!"
She threw the dagger next to them and freed the man by letting herself fall back next to him. Her heart was still racing, and she could still smell the disgusting sulfur, even though she knew it was only a dream. Of course it was a dream.
He couldn't be here. He was dead because of her.
"Dean I'm sorry..." She didn't know what to do or say to apologize for her erratic behavior. She had hurt Dean.
"Damn Frenchy, next time I'll let Sam wake you up." Dean groaned and straightened up, touching his injured nose to make sure it wasn't broken.
"Are you okay?" Alina asked in a scared tone that worried the man more than anything else. He looked at her, smiling through the slight pain in the middle of his face.
"Yeah I'm fine. It's part of my daily job to get punched, remember?"
"Dean..." She started to lift her fingers to try and check on his nose, but put her hand back on her leg before she could reach it. "I'm sorry..." She didn't want to hurt him. She thought she was done with the nightmares, but obviously Mr Carlton had triggered something in her mind. "I didn't..."
"Hey I said I was fine Frenchy. Okay?"
She knew he was using his big scary voice to look stronger in front of her, and act like she hadn't hurt him, so she nodded even though she felt bad that he was the one trying to reassure her.
"So... Do we need to talk about this?" He clumsily asked.
Dean Winchester didn't know how to make people talk about emotions, without sounding threatening or annoyed. But Alina was used to this. That's why she had always preferred talking to Sam when they were young.
"Actually I'd rather not." She replied, already trying to leave the bed. But Dean quickly took her hand to stop her, and make her look back at him.
"Come on Alina. I know Sammy's usually better at this, but if he wasn't so messed up right now, I'm pretty damn sure he would've noticed the way you've been acting since we got here. So what's going on?"
She was surprised of how perceptive he had been. And didn't expect him to insist like that. "Dean, hunters don't usually dream of rainbows and unicorns. It was just a nightmare, it's part of my daily job, remember?"
She couldn't let this memories distract her from their current job. One mistake, and someone could die because she couldn't think fast enough.
"You were sitting on me with a knife on my throat just a minute ago? I mean normally it could be a real turn on for me, but I feel like it's not your usual flirting tactic."
"Dean..."
But before she could answer him, Dean's phone suddenly rang in his jacket. He hesitated, but when she let go of his hand to get off the bed in embarrassment, he swore to kill whoever was calling him at the worst moment. He angrily took the phone and picked up without even looking at the caller ID.
"Dude what's taking so long?" Sam's voice asked in the small device.
"Damn it Sammy! When I tell you to get in the car and wait, you shut up and wait in the car!"
And he hung up without letting his younger sibling add anything else. When he turned around, he found Alina with her jacket on, ready to leave.
"So? Where are we going?"
He could easily see that Alina was completely back in Hunter Mode, and right now she wasn't going to talk about anything other than the job. Sooner or later, she would eventually have to talk to him about her nightmare, but he agreed on the fact that they had to hurry if they wanted to catch Andrea and Lucas at the park.
So he followed her outside the room while giving her the informations Sam had found when she was sleeping. "Apart from this year's victims, we got six more missing bodies over the past 35 years and Andrea's husband was one of them. Lucas was alone on a floating wooden platform when his dad drowned in front of him. Kid got rescued two hours later. So right now, he's our only eye-witness."
Alina wished they didn't have to ask for help from an innocent little boy, but they didn't really have a choice if they wanted to stop the killings. "Poor Lucas." She sighed. "He's so young, he shouldn't have seen something like that."
"Yeah no wonder that kid was so freaked out." Dean pointed out in a sadden voice. "Watching one of your parents die isn't something you just get over."
Alina felt stupid to realize only at this moment that Dean was also reliving some painful memories. He had witnessed his mother's death when he was 4. Alina was only a baby back then, and she was 10 when her parents had explained to her what had happened that night in Sam's nursery. She remembered how sad she had felt to hear the horrible story of her friend's trauma. She remembered how tight their next embrace was after that, even if he didn't know why she needed to hug him so bad.
And she wanted to hug him again right now. But it would've been hypocritical, since she wouldn't share her own problems with him. Actually she was even more relieved that she hadn't told him about her nightmare, because he already had too much on his mind.
When they got to the park, they quickly found Andrea sitting on a bench, watching her son drawing and playing at another bench. Alina loved kids. She didn't know if she ever wanted to have one of her own, but she did enjoy their innocence. And sadly, Lucas had already lost his.
"Can we join?" Sam asked the boy's mother, who looked up in surprise. She clearly didn't expect to see the three of them again so soon, but eventually smiled while looking back at Lucas.
"I'm here with my son."
The three hunters turned to the boy, pretending to not have seen him earlier, and Dean gently grabbed Alina's arm. "Oh. Mind if we say hi?" Dean asked, already walking towards him with his friend.
Alina was hoping Dean hadn't brought her with him so he could interrogate her privately about her murder attempt in the motel room. So she just kept walking next to him in silent, until they carefully approached the little boy.
"How's it going?" Dean was the first to talk, and didn't get any response.
The two friends decided to crouch next to the bench after sharing a concerned look, but Lucas still didn't react. Dean picked up one of the toy soldiers. "Oh, I used to love these things." Alina smiled when he imitated the sound of guns et explosions and moved the toy in the air.
"Yeah I remember I used to steal them from you so Sammy could play too, because someone wouldn't share with his brother." Alina pointed out, making Dean look at her, shocked by the realization.
"That was you?"
She simply gave him a mischievous grin and a wink. But Lucas was still silent and focused on his drawing, so Dean tossed the toy soldier down in defeat.
"So crayons is more your thing? That's cool. Chicks dig artists." He said as he looked at Alina.
"Yeah totally." She responded, and didn't break the eye contact with Dean. "Don't worry, you still got time to learn."
Dean rolled his eyes in amusement and they started to take a look at Lucas' drawings on the bench next to him. A big black twirl, a red bicycle...
"Hey, these are pretty good." Dean said. "You mind if we sit and draw with you for a while?" He picked up two crayons and gave one to Alina. "I'm actually not so bad myself."
"Oh I can't wait to see that work of art."
Dean sat on the bench, while Alina let herself fall to the ground to sit in front the boys. And so they started to draw with Lucas.
"You know, I'm thinking you can hear us, you just don't want to talk." Dean told him, and Alina kept staring at her piece of paper to let her friend talk freely. And he did. "I don't know exactly what happened to your dad, but I know it was something real bad. I think I know how you feel. When I was your age, I saw something."
Alina felt a knot in her throat when she heard Dean's voice break just a little, forcing him to take a short pause before he was able to continue. "Anyway. Well, maybe you don't think anyone will listen to you, or, uh...or believe you. I want you to know that we will. You don't even have to say anything. You could draw us a picture about what you saw that day, with your dad, on the lake."
Alina finally raised her head, but when she actually intended to look at Lucas, her eyes met Dean's in an instant. She tried to look reassuring, because she didn't want him to think she could ever pity him. She just wanted to be a good friend like she had always tried to be. They kept looking at each other for a moment, before turning back to the silent kid. It definitely wasn't easy to make him react.
"Okay, no problem. This is for you." Dean held out the picture he drew to Lucas.
Alina couldn't help but find the five little stick figures adorable.
"This is my family. That's my dad. That's my mom. That's my geek brother. That's me. And the really short one with the pigtails, that's Alina."
"I'm 5'7, and I haven't worn pigtails since I was 8." Alina protested.
"You can't judge art, Frenchy. Whatcha got?"
Alina sighed and showed them her drawing. She had also drawn three stick figures, although hers were sitting on what was supposed to be horses but actually looked like cows, and were holding shields and swords. "So before he died, my dad used to fight ugly monsters and saved a lot of people. I've always admired how brave he was, so that's me now." She pointed at the stick figure between the other two to illustrate what she said. "There's also Dean and his brother Sam, and we're fighting the scary monsters so they never ever come back to hurt innocent people."
It was Dean's turn to look at her with a sad face. They had talked about it, yet he still felt guilty about her father's death. But knowing that she had never hated him for that, prevented the weight on his shoulders to come back.
The three of them had lost a parent in a horrible way, so when Lucas still refused to talk, Alina and Dean decided that they wouldn't push it too far, and stood up.
"All right, so we're sucky artists." Dean joked in disappointment. "We'll see you around, Lucas."
"You can keep our drawings, and it's okay if you like mine more than his."
Dean sighed, put his arm on her shoulders and pulled her along with him, heading back to Sam and Andrea. They walked slower, arm in arm, not realizing how much they looked like a couple in this position. Alina wanted to talk to her friend about her nightmares, but she didn't know how, since she hadn't even told Sam the whole story.
For now, she just didn't want to feel uncomfortable with Dean, so she did what seemed to be the most natural thing to do with him. "You know what? I think you actually have a bright future ahead of you as an artist."
"Yeah?" He instantly joked back. "I don't know, I think I looked good with a sword and a shield."
"Don't you ever switch Baby for a goddamn horse."
"I'll ride that car even when I'm dead."
They both laughed, relieved that the weird atmosphere was gone for now.
"But you were right though, I do have a thing for artists. They can draw French girls so well." She kept walking in amusement when Dean stopped for a moment at her words. She had forced him to go with her at the theater when Titanic first came out. And even though she hadn't cried like all the other spectators around her, she had to promise that she would never tell anyone that Dean Winchester shed a tear at the end of a movie.
That was one of her favorite memories.
They finally reached Sam and Andrea in the middle of their conversation. "Lucas hasn't said a word, not even to me. Not since his dad's accident."
"Yeah, we heard. Sorry." Dean said. Andrea nodded and Alina could feel the pain she was so desperately trying to hide from the rest of the world. She literally felt it like she was the one that had to watch her son suffer in silence.
She frowned and tried to focus on what Sam was saying. "What are the doctors saying?"
"That it's a kind of post-traumatic stress."
"That can't be easy. For either of you."
"We moved in with my dad. He helps out a lot. It's just...when I think about what Lucas went through, what he saw..."
Andrea stopped in the middle of her sentence, overwhelmed by all the sadness and fear accompanying the thoughts of her son, hopelessly witnessing his father's death. She should have been here. Why couldn't she help him more? Was she that bad of a mother that her own son wouldn't talk to her?
"Kids are strong. You'd be surprised what they can deal with." Dean reassured Andrea without noticing Alina's confusion behind him.
"You know, he used to have such life. He was hard to keep up with, to tell you the truth. Now he just sits there. Drawing those pictures, playing with those army men. I just wish..."
Lucas surprised everyone when he arrived in the middle of the conversation, handing Dean and Alina a picture that the girl took with a smile. "Whoa you did great. Thank you."
She gave it to Dean, who also smiled at the boy. "Thanks. Thanks, Lucas."
The kid then headed back to the bench when the hunters took a closer look at the drawing. It was just a house.
I actually don't really like this episode so I decided to add some details about Alina's backstory. So there'll be 3 parts because of all these new details and scenes with Alina and the boys (More specifically Dean hehe…)
Hope you'll like part 2 and 3 ! And please tell me what you think about the way I use French dialogues with the translation right next to it.
