Touch of Evil;
Naomi leisurely walked as she weighed her options: she could go back to Cross Academy or go she could spend the night at Veronica's. It's not like Veronica would mind; Veronica would actually be ecstatic that her friend would like to spend the night with her.
Naomi shook her head; I should head back.
Naomi turned to her left and headed towards the academy as she thought about what Tanaka told her, don't trust, Kaname Kuran. It's not like I ever did.
She lifted her head and gazed at the waxing moon. She took Phthisis out from her pocket – it was so weird how this pocket-sized butterfly knife could melt the flesh off vampires, but not harm any human it comes across. Still, it was nice to know Tanaka was looking after her even if he had lied to her.
"Hello, Miss." A boyish voice said.
Naomi turned around; probably just some kid looking for parents or some – Her breath hitched. Those eyes – those same haunting mismatched eyes that have been following her in her reality and in her dreams. She quickly took a few steps away from the small silhouette. It didn't matter, Naomi knew who it was... those eyes were irrefutable. Her heart stilled as the boy kept watching her in amusement.
Naomi's blood ran cold.
She spoke softly, "What do you want?"
The little boy's eyes shined with mischief, "You ran away last time." He smiled, "You always run away."
Naomi gulped, her voice firmer now, "What do you want?"
The boy frowned, "You don't remember me?" He cocked his head to the side, "I guess you wouldn't recognize me in this form." He sighed, "How unfortunate."
Naomi took a couple of steps further away from him; Recognize him? Why would I recognize him?
"I – I – " She breathed in and with a newfound sense of courage, gripped Phthisis tighter – she demanded, "Answer my question."
The boy's smile widened, "You'll know..." she could see his fangs, "in due time, Naomi."
A dark pit grew inside of Naomi. It threatened to swallow her whole – he would swallow her whole. A sickening lump was caught in her throat. She didn't want to know what he wanted from her; whatever it was it would be awful for her; He said form, so this is a façade. His real form is the one in the dream.
"Now," The boy's smile morphed into something wicked, "Be a good girl and stay still."
Naomi's violet eyes widened, Like hell!
The boy lunged as Naomi leaned back away from his reach and made a break for the Cross Academy. I'm running away from a vampire, she thought, I'm running away from a vampire! Naomi thought, Am I going to make it? What are the odds that I am? Are there any odds to even pull from?
She huffed and she puffed and didn't allow herself a moment of reprieve until she was in front of the Academy's gate. Without wasting a second, Naomi slipped inside of the campus grounds and finally took in a deep breath of relief.
"You always were a defiant little girl." The voice spoke right into her ear.
Naomi let out a shriek and scrambled away from the source. She stared wide eyed, but there was no one there.
But who was it? Nothing about him seemed familiar – she had never seen or met him in her life.
She began to walk backwards to the dorms with Phthisis brandished in front of her as she kept her eyes towards the gates, who is he? I can't think of anyone who matches. Maybe, when I was younger? I don't remember much when I was little. Maybe I could call my mom and dad... ask them about it. Or I can try Tanaka-
Naomi's thoughts were cut short when she felt a hand gently touch her shoulder. Still on edge, she jumped away from the touch and slashed behind her. Kaname gripped the blade letting it cut him.
His worried gaze met her terrified one. He didn't even seem to care that blood and skin was bubbling at the contact with the blade.
Kaname guided her hand down, "What happene – "
Tanaka's voice came creeping into her thoughts, stay away from the Pureblood.
Naomi snapped, "I'm fine."
She swiped Phthisis from his closed fist, splattering his bubbling blood on the academy's cobblestones.
Kaname frowned and reached for her with his wounded hand, "Naomi – "
Naomi stepped away from again, "I'm tired." She gave him a piercing glare, "Leave me alone, and do not call me by my first name again."
Her grip on the butterfly knife stayed tight; don't look back at the gate. Just walk around him and head back to the dorms.
Kaname's eyes held a small token of despair, but he said nothing, and let her move past him. His eyes fixed on the gate. He had only come because he had heard her scream but the only thing out of the ordinary were the gates being unlocked. Still, Kaname kept his eyes on Naomi until she made it back to the Sun Dorms. He supposed that at least for now she was safe within the academy's walls.
Not that it mattered, Naomi, once again, did not sleep – all she did was change into pajamas and laid down, eyes wide and unblinking as she held Phthisis tightly until her knuckles were white.
