A/N: I promise this chapter is way better I am just awful at prologues
Shelby's off to the octagon
I can tell you that MMA was a godsend for me. Do you know how you can be too much? Like, okay I love my sister Tori. She is a star. My favorite person in the world, but I was a LOT. I was more well-defined, and if we kept going to the same school I could see my personality fading Tori's shine.
So when I was moved to a new school, though I worried the bullies would overtake Tori, I was so happy that I could be myself without holding back.
Eight grade was the best, and My school had boxing as a sport so I was in the ring there. Then I begged Dad to put me in an actual gym.
First day at the gym, starting my semi-pro program. I kind of ended up in the MMA ring instead of the boxing one.
I met Juan there, coaching another girl. "She is leaving herself wide open," I said and realized this sparring partner was not doing the girl any favors.
"This your first day?" he asked
"If this was a street fight she would be on the floor. I could beat her." I answered his question.
"You wanna spar?" he asked, "Jac's the best we have. She is going pro."
"I'm not scared," I said and climbed into the ring. Grabbed the sparring partner by the elbow and pushed her aside. Then I got ready for Jac's attack.
The sparring went so well that Juan stole me from the pro boxing program for the MMA one. And I would spar with Jac which helped me learn a lot.
Jac, she's my best friend outside of Tori. One day, when we were sparring her manager Ron walked in and watched us spar. "Ow! Shel that was good. I have to watch my right." she said and the next time I tried the roundhouse she blocked me.
"Good," I said. Encouraging words flew out of our mouths as we sparred and Ron seemed to really like it.
After we were done, Ron came up to me. "Shelby Vega right?"
"Yeah," I said taking a big gulp of water.
"How would you like to travel with Jac to her next fight?"
"That would be awesome!" I said. "Like I would be part of her training team? And get paid?"
"Yeah," he said.
"Holy Shit!" I said with a huge smile on my face, and just then Tori and Dad walked in to get me and I frowned. "I'll be right back."
I ran over to them and bounced in front of my family. "I got a pro job."
"What?" Daddy said.
"They just asked me to be a paid member of Jac's pro team. I get to travel with her and everything." I said excitedly. I watched Tori's happy expression drop. My heart plummeted to my stomach. I needed her to understand that she needed to shine without me. "I could go by an alias, go to online school, just keep you guys out of it as much as possible. It's not like I am a prizefighter, just a training partner."
As I watched my sister decide that she hated MMA, I literally could see her thought process. Ron came up to Dad to talk logistics.
That night we talked to Mom, and there was a whole family meeting, in which Tori did not participate in. She was there, but she didn't speak. But after all of that was said and done, I was on my way. Mom's Mom Grandma Marx had just retired and she was going to travel with me because my mom was always super busy at the Firm and Dad… well he was a police officer. Plus the girls needed them.
It Wasn't like I was gone more than two weeks at a time.
Before I left I went to Tori. "Hey, Thing Two…" I said softly
"Oh hey, " she said, "I don't want you to worry that you are leaving me behind. Have the best time okay?"
"Yeah, but… I feel bad about school. First, it was just across town, now I am not even gonna be on the map." I answered sitting next to her on our stoop where she had been reading.
"No, I kind of … I made a deal with Danny. He's gonna be my beard." She said. "It will get the rest of them off my back about being Gay."
"You shouldn't have to hide." I sighed.
"It's only for a little while," she said, "Maybe high school will be different. Do you think you will be back for High school?"
"I don't know Tor, I really like what I am doing right now."
She sighed and nodded. "You're gonna do great."
"I'm gonna miss you," I said to her and held her close. Soon I was on a plane and on my way to New York with Jac.
