(A/N) This chapter will be the start of the tournament. Which means that I will not be taking requests for specific tournament matches. This will also be the starting point of where I will deviate a bit from canon. Both from the tournament and of Volume 3 and beyond.
Chapter 41 First match of the tournament
(Amity Colosseum Waiting Area)
It is a day of significance for a lot of people. For the civilians, it is a time of when the Vytal Festival has begun and it is a time of celebration. For the many of the students though, it is the first day of the Vytal Tournament. The Vytal Tournament is important to the students because the ones who are participating will have a moment to display their skills and capabilities to the world. While also representing both their Academy and Kingdom. Though there is a good deal of pressure some of the students. There are several students who are excited at the chance to have a challenge to their skills.
"Oooh this is so exciting, are any of you guys as nervous as I am?" Ruby asked her teammates
"Not really, because I know for certain that we're going to win this and go all the way." Yang said with a good deal of confidence
"We did everything we're supposed to do Ruby. We trained as much as possible, we went over a good number of strategies, and we made sure that we're well rested." Blake told her leader
"Exactly, as long as we maintain our strategy and coordination. Then we should have nothing to worry about regarding the other teams." Weiss said agreeing with Blake
"Hey Weiss, any chance that your boyfriend will go easy on us if we ever end up fighting him?" Yang asked Weiss
"I already looked into that, Jin made it clear that if we are ever to fight him. Then we should not expect him to pull any punches." Weiss said remembering a conversation she had with Jin
"Then lets hope that we don't have to fight team RJNN this early. Ragna is already strong enough, but if we have to face both Jin and Ragna. Then I hate to say it but our chances won't be too favorable." Blake said with her team nodding in agreement
(A different area of the waiting area)
"How much longer do we have to wait before we can begin our match?" Ragna said in an impatient tone
"Just a few more minutes Ragna, I know you want to get out there and fight. But we still need to wait for everything to get set up." Noel told Ragna
"You can't you blame him for getting anxious Noel. A chance to prove that you're the best of the best doesn't come along too often you know." Makoto said before she started to speak to Ragna
"Before I forget, how were you able to convince Jin to work with you during the tournament?" Makoto asked in a curious tone while pointing her thumb to Jin
"I had a talk with him and we decided on a truce. Though after the tournament its still business as usual." Ragna told Makoto
"Well considering that we all need to give the tournament our full attention. I'd say that this is a very good thing." Makoto said in a happy tone
"But we still need to make sure we approach this with a plan in mind. Especially if it means fighting against teams that we know are strong." Noel said in a concerned tone
"Look there's nothing to it, we just have to work together and approach this as we do with our sparring matches and we'll be fine." Ragna said before the screen changed to the image of Professor Port and Dr. Oobleck at the desk ready to give the announcements and commentary
"Hello everyone and welcome to the Vytal Festival Tournament. I am Peter Port and my colleague here is Bartholomew Oobleck." Professor Port said before Dr. Oobleck continued
"We are here to provide commentary and updates to things regarding the tournament and the matches. The ones who are participating in the tournament are students of various skills and experience. So age and school year has no relevance as long as they are a student at one of the four Huntsman Academies. The first set of matches will be four vs. four and after that it will be two vs two. Then the finals will be composed of one vs one matches." Dr. Oobleck said on T.V.
"Now it is time we have our first set of matches. The ones who will be fighting each other will be chosen at random along with the terrain they will be fighting on. For the one vs one matches. The combatants will not be fighting on any special terrain. So they will have to rely on their weapons and skills. Now let us see who will have the excitement to be the first fighters." Professor Port said before the match selector started to randomly choose the match ups. After a few seconds, the first team that was chosen was team RJNN.
"Alright this is it, we could be fighting anyone." Makoto said in a slightly nervous tone while the fighters were being selected. After a few seconds the second team that was chosen for the fight was team CFVY.
"Looks like Ragna and his team will be fighting team CFVY." Yang said afterseeing the results
"Let's get to the ring and get this over with." Jin said in a slightly impatient tone
"What a first match up we have. The first teams that will be fighting each other is team RJNN who is led by a passionately blooded Ragna the Bloodedge. Who will be going up against one of my own stand out teams team CFVY." Professor Port said to a roaring crowd
"Ragna, why did he call you Ragna the Bloodedge?" Noel asked ina curious tone
"I caught wind that Dr. Oobleck and Professor Port were going to be providing commentary. So I spoke with them and asked them to try to refer to me as Ragna the Bloodedge when they get the chance. After all, this is a chance for me to get my name out there." Ragna briefly explained to Noel
"I suppose that makes sense." Noel responded as they were getting into the ring. After they made it to the ring. They saw that team CFVY already made it and were waiting for them.
"Hey Ragna, I appreciate you helping my teammate Velvet and everything. But don't think that I'll go easy on you because of that." Coco told Ragna in a confident tone
"Don't worry, I'd be pissed if you did." Ragna told Coco in response
"Also, I know it goes without saying, but don't hold back against us." Coco added
"Noted. Ragna responded ready to take on team CFVY
"We cannot afford to take him lightly Coco. Especially since they have the Hero of Vale on their team." Yatsuhashi told Coco with Fox and Velvet nodding in agreement. After a few seconds, the terrain has changed and it changed into half a lake and the other half being a rocky structure.
"Now all the combatants know the rules. THREE, TWO, ONE, BEGIN!" Professor Port yelled before Coco turned her purse into a minigun and aimed it at team RJNN.
Reacting quickly, Jin had used his weapon and semblance to create a line to block the shots fired by Coco. After doing so, each of the members of team RJNN split up to prevent Coco from getting all of them at once. Realizing what team RJNN was trying to do, Coco decided to aim her minigun at Ragna. Fortunately Jin created another ice wall and was able to block her shots. After Coco's shots were blocked by the ice wall, she turned her attention towards Jin.
"Well taking on the hero of Vale should have its own levels of excitement." Coco said ina confident tone before she fired her minigun at Jin causing him to run to avoid it.
Ragna on the other hand found himself fighting against Fox. Ragna used his large sword to block against an attack from Fox's armblades and tried to push him away. Reacting quickly, Fox used a combination of his strength and agility to jump over Ragna using Ragna's large sword as foot hold. Once Fox got behind Ragna, he tried to attack Ragna. Fortunately, Ragna used a great deal of his strength block Fox's attack with his arm. Ragna used his other arm to grab his sword and tried to attack his opponent. Fox was barely able to avoid the sword attack by backflipping and was able to make some distance between himself and Ragna. After avoiding the attack, Fox smirked at the fact that he'll be presented with a challenge and charged towards Ragna.
"It looks like Fox's skill and agility had served him well in avoiding Ragna's attacks." Dr. Oobleck briefly explained to a cheering crowd
"Though Ragna was able to surprise us by merely blocking Fox's attack with his arm with practically no aura loss. Seems like an age old clash of power vs speed. With skill and experience being the defining factor." Professor Port said commenting on the match
"Speaking of clashes, lets see how Noel and Makoto are doing against Yatsuhashi and Velvet." Dr. Oobleck said as the two were watching the match
Makoto and Noel spent a good deal of time fighting against Yatsuhashi and Velvet. After Noel transformed her dual guns into a minigun she tried to fire at both Yatsuhashi and Velvet. Every time Noel tried to fire at both Yatsuhashi and Velvet, the large student was able block each shot with his sword. Velvet on the other hand stayed behind Yatsuhashi and was keeping a careful eye on the duo. Ready and waiting for them to get closer.
"This is getting us nowhere, we have to split them up and make it quick." Makoto told Noel
"Right, I'll take on Velvet while you fight Yatsuhashi. I can't get an accurate read on his semblance. I guess he must not have used it in months." Noel said before she focused her attention on Velvet and transformed Bolverk from its minigun form back to its original dual gun form.
After being told the idea, Makoto proceeded to run directly towards both Yatsuhashi and Velvet. Before Makoto got too close, she leapt into the air and headed towards the two members of team CFVY. When Makoto got close, she threw a punch that Yatsuhashi ended up blocking with his large sword. This was what Makoto wanted though, because the shockwave was strong enough to push back Violet and separate her from Yatsuhashi. When Yatsuhashi noticed this, he was impressed with Makoto's capabilities and decided to stretch his arm out for what will be an intense fight against Makoto.
"Your strength and cleverness is quite impressive. I look forward to the next few minutes against you." Yatsuhashi said to Makoto
"The feeling is mutual, just don't hold back." Makoto said in an excited tone to Yatsuhashi before they charged towards each other clashing their weapons against each other.
After being separated from Yatsuhashi, Velvet was on the look out for Noel. After she saw Noel, Velvet decided to hide behind cover to make sure Noel doesn't get a clear shot with her dual guns. Unfortunately for Velvet, Noel knew what she was trying to do and where she was and decided to fire at her. In a quick second, Velvet was hit by a small explosion and was forced out of cover and ended up being on the run.
"It appears that Noel's guns are able to hit there target no matter the barrier or shield. Looks like Velvet is going to have to utilize a different tactic or else her chances of a victory will look even more slim." Dr. Oobleck said providing more commentary
After Velvet realized that hiding won't do her any good, she proceeded to come up with a different plan. Velvet decided pursue Noel while avoiding her shots as she was getting closer. Once Velvet got close, she tried to attack Noel in close quarters with a series of a few quick jabs and punches. Noel was able to block the first few initial attacks. But she was not quick enough to block a kick from Velvet and was kicked back a fair distance.
"I'm much stronger than I look Noel. So don't underestimate me for a second." Velvet said before she continued her attack assault.
Back to both Jin and Coco, Jin is taking either defensive or evasive maneuvers due to Coco keeping up the pressure with her minigun. After a few minutes, Jin took a quick look around the area and immediately thought of a plan. After he thought of a plan, Jin focused a good deal of his aura into his sword and decided to pursue Coco. After she reloaded her minigun, Coco resumed firing her minigun at Jin. This time Jin was prepared, because he used a good deal of his strength and speed to deflect the minigun bullets while he was running towards Coco. Knowing what Jin was capable of in close quarters, Coco kept moving back to maintain distance between her and Jin. After a few more seconds of deflecting Coco's minigun shots, Jin ended up going behind cover once again.
"Friendly advice from me, deflecting and hiding won't do you any good against me hero. Though I'm honestly surprised, not many katanas can deflect my bullets like that." Coco yelled to Jin while still firing at the cover that Jin is hiding behind
"Here's some friendly advice for you then. It will benefit you greatly for you to pay attention to your surroundings." Jin yelled to Coco causing her to look around for a second before she noticed the frozen bullets.
After Coco heard Jin and saw the frozen bullets, she was wondering for a brief second about what Jin meant. But continued to fire since she wanted to deal with him quickly. What happened next though is that Jin used his semblance to manipulate the frozen bullets to launch them at Coco. The second-year student was barely able to notice the manipulated bullets and after doing so proceeded to dodge them. As she was dodging them, Coco had to turn her minigun back into its purse form. So she can have more mobility so she can dodge the manipulated frozen bullets. After Coco spent a few more seconds of dodging, she noticed that the barrage of frozen bullets has ended. But she quickly noticed Jin running towards her with a focused look.
"Looks like Jin was able to freeze the bullets of Coco's minigun and creatively used his semblance to put her on the defensive." Professor Port said to a cheering crowd
"Quite a creative use of one of my top student's semblance. I expect nothing less from the Hero of Vale." Dr. Oobleck said to a cheering crowd as well
Once Jin got close, Coco decided to use her purse to fight against Jin. For a few seconds, the both of them fought against each other. While Coco did the best she could to avoid getting cut by Jin' sword. She was unable to land a direct hit on Jin and she was constantly on the defensive. After a few seconds, Jin was able to land several cuts on Coco's purse. When Coco took a quick look, she realized that Jin froze her weapon making sure that she can't transform it into a minigun again. Before Coco could do anything further, Jin ended up hitting her with his sword's sheath and knocked her back further.
After getting knocked back, Coco tried to find a way to break the ice on her weapon. But before she could do anything, she noticed that she landed on the lake portion of the stage and noticed that the water was moving by itself. When Coco looked around, she noticed that Jin was generating his aura and realized that Jin is manipulating the water. Before Coco could do anything, Jin was able to quickly manipulate the water to trap Coco. After she was trapped, Jin used his abilities further to freeze the water and trapped Coco further making her unable to move.
Coco tried to break free of her new icy prison, but was unable to do so and Jin quickly appeared in front of her and proceeded to furiously slash at Coco while she was frozen in ice. After Jin sheath his sword, the ice that Coco was in shattered and Coco was knocked out of the ring and at the same time her aura depleted.
"Looks like Coco is eliminated, though despite the loss she was able to put up a valiant fight." Professor Port said to the crowd
"Jin can control water, that is so cool." Ruby said in an impressed tone
"It's also problematic if we end up fighting against him." Blake commented
"I didn't expect him to get the hang of it so soon." Jaune commented which was heard by Pyrrha
"Jaune did you know he could do that?" Ren asked
"Yeah, but he couldn't do much with it." Jaune answered
"Looks like the Hero of Vale has a few more tricks up his sleeves. Aside from that light show he did that saved us from the Grimm Breach." Nora commented
"Nora, try to avoid calling Jin the Hero of Vale so much. Because I get the feeling that if so many people call him that, it would feel less honored and more burdened and insulting. Like for example, people calling me the champion every chance they got." Pyrrha told Nora causing her to think for a second
"Hmm, alright I understand Pyrrha." Nora said understanding Pyrrha
Ragna and Fox spent some time fighting against each other. At first glance, the two appears to be evenly matched. But looking at the two further, shows that Fox is slowly but surely getting overwhelmed by Ragna. Fox initially assumed that Ragna would be at a major disadvantage. The main reason is that Ragna shows a great reliance on power which is easily countered by speed, agility, and skill. All of which that Fox has a good deal of. However, Fox quickly realized that there is a lot more to Ragna and that the white-haired student is more skilled and experienced then he appears to be.
After a few more seconds have passed, Fox decided to jump away from Ragna to make space between the two. Once space was made, Fox was able to hide so he can hit Ragna with a sneak attack. Since Fox is able to sense the terrain a lot better with his earpiece ADA. After a few seconds of waiting, Fox jumped from his hiding spot and tried to attack Ragna, Unfortunately for Fox, Ragna was ready for him and was able to guard against his attack.
After Ragna guarded against Fox's attack, Ragna used his strength to push Fox upaward with his immense sword. After Fox was pushed upward to the sky. Ragna started to channel some of his aura to his sword until it started to radiate energy. As Fox was coming down, Ragna used a good deal of his strength to jump up towards Fox and was able to strike him as he was going up. When it was time for Ragna to go back down due to gravity. Ragna still held on to Fox. Once the two got to the ground, Ragna slammed Fox down to the ground using the strength of his sword and his own power. When Ragna looked at the display screen, he sees that Fox's aura was depleted.
"With that careful display of power, Ragna was able to overpower Fox with a combination of skill and power. Now if only he displayed these traits in my class, then we wouldn't have so many disagreements." Dr. Oobleck commented
"Looks like Ragna is as skilled as ever." Amane commented
"Yeah, I wonder what tricks he'll have up his sleeves for the matches." Scarlet wondered out loud
"If you guys only knew." Neptune said causing Sun to elbow him
Makoto and Yatsuhashi spent a good deal of time in close quarters while blocking each other's attacks. Even though Yatsuhashi has more experience with the Academy and his training. Makoto's capabilities has forced the second year student to consistently be on the defensive. After spending a few more seconds of being on the defensive. Yatsuhashi was able to grab Makoto's wrist and managed to throw her to one of the nearby boulders. After Makoto was thrown, Yatsuhashi ran towards her and did a downward slash against her. Reacting quickly, Makoto was able to block Yatsuhashi's attack while on the boulder. While the both of them were struggling aga inst each other. The boulder was slowly breaking and after a brief moment it was destroyed. After the boulder broke, Makoto spent a few seconds rolling back before she completely recovered.
Once Makoto recovered, she grabbed some specialized dust marbles and proceeded to punch them towards Yatsuhashi. Before the dust marbles got too close, Yatsuhashi swung at the marbles with his massive sword. Unfortunately for him, when he hit those marbles his body was electrocuted which stunned him. The other dust marbles that hit the ground created a smokescreen which blocked Yatsuhashi's view. It didn't take Yatsuhashi long to recover. After he did so, he swung his massive sword to blow away the smoke. However after he did so, he saw Makoto running towards him and landed a strong punch against him. The punch was strong enough to launch him back to where Noel and Velvet were fighting at.
Noel was kept busy by trying to fire at Velvet. Unfortunately, Velvet proved to be more agile than Noel originally anticipated and kept dodging all of Noel's shots. When Noel tried to change her weapons, Velvet would always get close and hit her with a series of quick attack. Before Noel could retaliate, Velvet would use her agility to escape and maintain distance from Noel. Realizing that as things stand, Velvet would be able to slowly overpower her. Noel needed to think of a plan. Not helping matters is that Noel's Aura Weapon Bolverk can't use dust ammo. As she was thinking of a plan, Noel noticed Yatsuhashi being knocked near the both of them and at the corner of her eye. Noel saw Makoto playfully tossing one of her dust marbles in the air with a smirk.
When Noel saw Makoto and that smirk, she realized the plan that Makoto is trying to propose. After a second, Makoto threw the dust marble at Velvet. When Velvet saw the dust marble she quickly moved out of the way to avoid getting hit. Even though Velvet avoided the dust marble, she was slightly confused as to why Makoto would throw it. When Velvet took a glance at Noel aiming her gun at the dust marble, Velvet quickly realized what the plan was. When Noel fired her gun, she caused the dust marble to explode. Though it wasn't a regular explosion like Velvet expected. It was an energy explosion that radiated purple energy. Which confirms that the dust marble has gravity dust. After the explosion, both Velvet and Yatsuhashi were pulled into the gravitational field and were stuck like that. Before either of them could break free, Makoto quickly ran towards them and delivered a strong punch that was able to knock both Yatsuhashi and Velvet out of the ring.
"With the double knockout of Velvet and Yatsuhashi from Makoto. That makes team RJNN the winner. Such an impressive display of teamwork and resourcefulness from both Noel and Makoto. But let's also give it up to team CFVY for putting up the valiant fight that they did." Professor Port said causing the crowd to cheer for both team CFVY and team RJNN. After the crowd cheered, the members of team RJNN went to their respective opponents.
"You did pretty good Fox, we should have a rematch when all this is over." Ragna told Fox as he was helping them up causing Fox to nod in approval.
"You fought well." Jin told Coco as he reached out his hand to help Coco
"Thanks, but honestly I shouldn't expect anything less from the Hero of Vale." Coco commented before she got up. After Coco got up, Jin walked away to do his own thing
"You show an excellent display of skill with your strength Makoto. I'm honored to have fought against you." Yatsuhashi told Makoto in a grateful tone
"Thanks Yatsuhashi, your actually pretty good yourself." Makoto responded to Yatsuhashi
"You did pretty good for a first year Noel. Keep up the training and you'll go far." Velvet told Noel
"Thanks Velvet, but I have a long way to go compared to the rest of my team. You gave me a rough time without you having to use your weapon." Noel told Velvet in a conflicted tone
"I've been through a lot of training so trust me. I had to work hard for me to develop my skills. Besides I couldn't use my weapon even if I wanted to. Coco insisted on me holding off on it since it took me all semester to built it up. Which reminds me, I've never seen guns like yours before." Velvet said before she took a picture of Noel's guns. After Velvet took the picture, Noel's guns Bolverk started to glow for a brief second before the light dissipated.
"This only happened once before, are your guns the legendry Aura Weapons?" Velvet asked in a curious tone
"Um sure, but why do you ask?" Noel asked Velvet in an equally curious tone
"My camera can't copy Aura Weapons, I learned that a few months ago when I took a picture of your teammate Jin's weapon. But how lucky is that, your team has two members with an Aura Weapon for each of them. Not to mention that the teammate that has an Aura Weapon became the Hero of Vale." Velvet briefly explained to Noel
"Well when you put it like that, all of that sounds a little overwhelming." Noel said before the rest of both teams arrived.
"Hey everyone, where is Jin and Ragna?" Noel asked when she saw that the brothers wasn't around
"They left off to do his own thing most likely. C'mon, let's go and get some snacks before the next match." Makoto said with everyone agreeing
"But what about talking how to further proceed. Shouldn't we at least talk about that?" Noel asked Makoto causing her to chuckle
"Don't worry about that stuff Noellers, we have plenty of time for stuff like that. Besides, push comes to shove we can work together to think of something. Now let's go and mingle with team CFVY for a bit." Makoto said in a confident tone
"Well, I supposed that hanging out wouldn't take too much time." Noel said
"Right, and besides, I think that Coco and your friend Makoto could get along quite well. Like that other first year student she met. If I remember correctly, I think his name is Amane." Velvet said before they all started to go.
(The Colosseum Entrance)
After Ragna helped up Fox after the match was over. He decided to go out and explore the Colosseum before the next match is announced. Though Ragna has always enjoyed the appeal of things that are of a simplistic nature. He admits that there is an appeal to the Colosseum given its size and scale. As Ragna was doing some sightseeing, there is a part of him that is still cautious about both Cinder and Nu. For Cinder, Ragna knows that Cinder has a connection to the Grimm Breach that happened a couple of weeks ago. But the fact that Roman was caught and likely admitted to causing it will remove any possible connection that she could have to the Breach. Not to mention that the threat against Saya and Celica is still hanging over his head. Which is forcing Ragna to tread carefully. Sending them home is an option that Ragna wants to consider. But he figured that as long as they are in Vale, it will be easier for him to protect them.
As for Nu, Ragna is still thinking about the memories he took from her when they fought during her first arrival into Beacon. Ragna doesn't know why, but a part of him wants to know what happened to Nu within those labs. Part of Ragna knows that Nu has to be dealt with as soon as possible. But there's another part of him that wants to know the full story. He doesn't know the full story, but Ragna suspects that Nu went through something terrible in her past. Ragna quickly shook those thoughts out of his head and decided to focus on the present. Since there is only so much he can do. Ragna decided to take out his Scroll and call Sister Celica and hoped with all his heart that she didn't get lost.
"Hello?" Celica answered
"Hey Sister Celica, its me Ragna. Were you able to see me and my team during the match?" Ragna asked happy that they called
"I did and you and your team did wonderfully. Jubei has trained you well and I see that its paying off. I've never seen Jin fight before and from I'm seeing, he has done pretty well for himself." Celica told Ragna in a proud tone
"Thanks, though I'm a little surprised that you didn't get lost." Ragna told Sister Celica
"Well we did have some trouble, but a nice young man insisted that he helps me and Saya find our way here to our seats. He even says that he knows you and told us his name. If I remember correctly, I believe that his first name is the same as my last name, Mercury." Celica said that caused Ragna to have a look on his face that is a mix of shock, anger, and fear.
Ragna wants to warn Celica and Saya to stay away from him and tell them of the danger that they are in. But Ragna knows that if he did that, then he would make them panic and either force Cinder's hands or make it a lot harder to protect them. Until Ragna is certain that they will not be put in any more danger, Ragna has to keep them in the dark for a bit longer. But the fact that one of Cinder's teammates was able to get to them does not sit well with Ragna.
"I see, well don't trust him Sister Celica. I mean he's from a different school and he might try to get dirt on me or something so him and his team could have an unfair advantage." Ragna told Celica
"Are you worried about that Ragna, well don't you worry. I prefer to see the good in people and he didn't ask anything about you. Don't let your competitive spirit stop you from seeing the potential good in people Ragna. After all, it's just a friendly competition." Celica told Ragna in a kind tone
"I'll meet you and Saya at your seats in a bit. The next match will start soon and I don't to miss it" Ragna told Celica
"I understand Ragna, we'll see you in a bit." Celica said before she hung up and ended the call. After the call ended, Ragna felt a cold sweat on his forehead and before he could think of what to do. He felt the sounds of a pair of hands clapping. When Ragna turned to see who was clapping, he saw that it was Cinder wearing a casual outfit. When Ragna saw Cinder, his body was filled with a great deal of rage. But Ragna had to do as Jin suggested and stay calm.
"Hello Ragna, I told you that we should chat again sometime." Cinder told Ragna in a mocking tone
"Give me one reason why I shouldn't cut you down where you stand." Ragna told Cinder as he was grabbing his large sword and started to make his way to Cinder
"I'll give you two reasons Ragna. The first reason is that we are near a large number of people. If you attack me unprovoked then in the eyes of the law, it will be a clear case of assault. Of course I can defend myself easily, but what defense will you have? Especially if we have a witness with a recording." Cinder told Ragna causing him to turn around and see Emerald recording the entire exchange with her Scroll.
"As for the second reason, well they say a picture is worth a thousand words. So what does this picture say?" Cinder said before she held up a picture of both Celica and Saya sitting in the audience seats
"YOU BITCH!" Ragna yelled before he made a move against Cinder. Before Ragna got too close, Cinder held up the picture closer to Ragna to emphasize her point
"Careful Ragna, my teammate Mercury was kind enough to make sure that your family doesn't get lost. It would be a shame if something happened during the festival. After all, accidents happen all the time Ragna." Cinder said with a confident tone causing Ragna to calm down
"What do you want?" Ragna said while on guard
"I just want to say congratulations on a well earned victory against team CFVY. Though the results were obvious from the beginning, it was still interesting to watch." Cinder told Ragna
"I know you had something to do with that Grimm Breach a few weeks ago. Even though Torchwick was captured. Your connected to it in some form or fashion." Ragna told Cinder in a suspicious tone
"You don't have proof Ragna, after all Roman was captured and confessed to everything. Unless you have evidence that connects me in some way." Cinder told Ragna in a confident tone
"I'm onto you Cinder, so don't get comfortable. Because you will slip up and when you do, I will be there to bring you down." Ragna told Cinder in a confident tone of his own
"I must admit Ragna, I'm still trying to find out how you knew it was me who was at the CCT Tower. But I'm not worried about it, because the truth will always come to light." Cinder told Ragna while not losing her composure
"Don't forget my warning Cinder, because if you forget. I will come for you and everyone else who helped you." Ragna told Cinder
"One more thing from me Ragna. Good luck with the tournament, you and your friends are going to need it." Cinder said before she made a move to leave with Emerald catching up to her. After the both of them went far, Ragna decided to make a call on his Scroll. When someone answered, Ragna was about to say something until Jin interrupted him.
"Don't say anything and just listen. In case your wondering where I am, I'm keeping an eye on Celica and Saya at a distance. I suspect that you, Celica, and Saya are being watched. So don't draw attention to yourself. Now say out loud that you and Makoto will be the pair for the next round." Jin said over the call
"I see, then it looks like me and Makoto will be the pair for the next round." Ragna said as Jin instructed
"Good, now go about your business and don't look suspicious." Jin said before he hung up
"Looks like Jin thought this through. Well I planned on going to the next round anyway, so this works out perfectly." Ragna thought to himself before he went back inside to get to Celica and Saya
(Elsewhere)
"Emerald were you able to record the entire conversation with me and Ragna, with us in view?" Cinder asked as she was using her Scroll
"Yes ma'am, not one second was missed." Emerald told Cinder in a happy tone
"Good, now send the video to me immediately. I need to get a few things ready on my end and that recording as well as the first one will play a huge role." Cinder said in a satisfied tone
"What will we do in the meantime?" Emerald asked in a curious tone
"Enjoy the matches, it is a tournament after all. Oh but before we do, I need to set a few things up and tell Mercury to meet up with us. We need to get ready for our matches in the tournament as well." Cinder said in a tone full of confidence
(Amity Colosseum)
"Now that we've all cooled down from the blood pumping excitement from the first match. I'm personally looking forward the next match. What do you think Professor?" Professor Port asked Dr. Oobleck
"Its Doctor, and I'm looking forward to it as well. Now without further delay, let's see our next combatants." Dr. Oobleck said before the match randomizer started again. The randomizer went on for a few seconds and after the seconds ended, the first ones to appear is team SSSN.
"Look it's Sun's team." Blake said as Sun and his team's faces appeared.
"The next combatants are the testosterone filled students, team SSSN. Now let us see who their opponents will be." Professor Port said further as the randomizer resumed. After a few more seconds have passed. The next set of teams faces showed a familiar face that surprised a great deal of the audience. After the faces showed up four people started to make their way to the stage.
"Their opponents are fourth year students who have showed to be capable and are somewhat infamous at their Academy. Team SDLK (Stalk), their members consists of Dizzy, Leo Whitfang, Ky Kiske, and last but most certainly not least Sol Badguy." Dr. Oobleck said announcing the students as they were making there way to the stage
"Uh oh, I saw how Sol fight, and I have an idea of what to expect." Sun told his teammates
"So what should we expect Sun?" Scarlet asked Sun in a curious tone
"Expect pain, because this is going to hurt." Sun told his teammate before the terrain changed to all sand
"At least we have an advantage because of the terrain." Neptune said trying to be optimistic for his friend
"Don't be intimidated kid, give it your all and you might have a shot." Sol told the guys
"Bring it on Sol, we've gotten a lot stronger from last time." Sun told Sol ready for the match that will begin soon

For the results of the first match
Team CFVY has a lot of experience between them. So early on Coco figured that it would be best to make the fights one on one. To make it easier for each member of her team to be able to take down certain people. The problem with that plan was that she underestimated both Jin and Ragna.
Jin's Aura Weapon Yukianesa is a lot stronger than most other weapons in the story. So it would be possible for him to deflect minigun bullets, which are known to be stronger than most other bullets. While deflecting them, Jin would use Yukianesa's ability to freeze them and set it up to have Coco go near the water. Even though Jin recently learned how to control water. He developed the skills enough to use it in a fight. Though the more water he has to control, the more it drains his aura.
For Ragna and Fox the both of them are evenly matched at first glance. However, Ragna's experience with fighting against his brother and his training with Jubei. Made him more than prepared for whatever Fox could do. Though Ragna is a powerhouse, he is a lot more skilled than he appears to be. Because keep in mind, Ragna did not release his seal during the initial fight.
It was a close fight between Yatsuhashi and Makoto. Because what Makoto lacks in experience, she makes up for in power and it is vice versa with Yatsuhashi. Since Makoto suspected early one that it would end in a draw between the two of them. She needed Noel's help to tip the scales. If the terrain was different, Makoto could've won but she wanted to be on the safe side.
As for why Velvet didn't use her weapon against Noel in this chapter, it was stated that Velvet's weapon has VERY LIMITED ammo so she had to use her natural skills to fight. Which also involved her semblance which allows her to mimic someone's fighting style. It was implied in the main series that Cinder didn't use her abilities in the tournament so if Cinder can do that, then why not Velvet.
To prevent some confusion allow me to explain Noel's semblance in this story. Her semblance is called the eye, it allows her to know what someone's semblance is as long as three conditions are met. First, the person has to have their semblance unlocked. The second condition is that they have to know specifically what their semblance is. The third and final condition is that the person has to have used their semblance within the past one to two months. It is possible for Noel's semblance to get stronger in this story. But whether or not it will get stronger is a MAJOR spoiler for this story.
When writing the fight of team RJNN vs team CFVY, I took team CFVY's semblance into consideration since the novel confirmed what their semblance are and the outcome would not have been any different. Also this is the first of the divergence from canon for volume 3. Because in the main canon team CFVY made it to the second round but in this story they didn't.
Also, the reason that Cinder didn't say anything about Jin. Is because she doesn't know that Jin and Ragna are related and she also doesn't know that Ragna got Jin's help. But until Ragna gets evidence that will work against Cinder and that the truth won't cause Celica and Saya to panic. Ragna has to keep them in the dark for as long as possible. He hates to do it, but he also doesn't want to make a bad situation worse. So he's handling this situation with caution. But is still active in trying to stop Cinder. At this point, the only ones that knows that Cinder is up to something is Jin and Ragna. But they don't have any evidence or proof that can be use against Cinder or her allies.
