It had been a couple of hours into everyone's dates when a call came in. When he had watched the computers before, it was usually a school calling to ask for a specific Avenger to come talk to kids about one thing or another. He got used to answering a certain way and didn't look to see who was calling the compound.
"You've reached the Avengers Compound," he said. "No, we don't do school vis-"
The HYDRA symbol glared at him on the screen, causing the color to drain from his face as a woman on the other end replied, "That won't be necessary. We just need you to do something for us."
"Yeah, no." Like hell, I will help those bastards.
"You have lovely children."
That gave him pause before the sound of his daughter, Lila, could be heard. She was crying. He could tell she was scared and his heart broke. What must Laura be thinking? Did she call the police? Did she even know?
"Dad?" Lila asked in a gut-wrenching tone.
Clint growled, "If you hurt them, I'll-"
The unknown woman interrupted, saying, "Release Natasha Romanoff, and I will let your family go." Did they have Laura too? "So simple."
"You're crazy!" He hoped they were bluffing and had just recorded his daughter after a nightmare.
"Then, say your goodbyes!" The sound of a gun cocking could be heard.
"Wait!" Tears fell, knowing he couldn't take the chance. "Okay." He began typing on the computer, overriding protocols, and using a special code that Fury would understand once he saw it. "There. She's out."
"And you will see your family tomorrow. Safe, as promised. Now, someone wants to talk to you."
"What more do you want?" He couldn't help yelling, fearing the worst.
"Hello, Barton," Nat said.
"What the fuck do you want?"
"Just tell my angel that she can't stay away forever. I will bring her and my moneymaker back home."
The way she said it made him sick, but he set to work trying to trace the number Nat was using. "You know you won't win!"
"And you'll never find me."
The line went dead. "Dammit!"
Nat looked over at the woman, Valentina de la Fontaine, with a grimace. Lila looked at Nat with fear. Cooper and Nathaniel sat tied to chairs. Nathaniel was crying. The guard holding Lila took her back to her chair, gagging her again and retying her restraints.
"Don't let them go until I get what I want," Nat instructed. "Once I break them again, you'll have a god and a new super soldier to use. Loki I don't care about so much, as long as I can still sell him to my clients to use. But my angel, I will control her. Deal?"
"Very well," said Valentina. "You have a deal."
