Chapter 6: Defiance
"I thank you for coming here. As you know, something serious has happened just before. Shalltear... has been possessed by something I feared the most: a world item." The guardians looked to their Supreme Lord in shock.
"World items, here?" Demiurge asked, confused and unsettled.
"Yes, their existence has found itself in this world as well. And Shalltear has been mind controlled by one. From what I could see, it was a group of humans, yet no near ordinary." Ainz replied.
"Then we shall crush them, Lord Ainz!" Aura declared in fury.
"That's the spirit, but its not possible for now, Aura. We don't know how strong they are and what other world items they might possess. They could be players, but I doubt it." Ainz said.
"We shall fight Shalltear then, for defying your will, Lord Ainz. All the guardians will stand with you." Demiurge proposed.
"We will discuss this further in my office. You will wait there until Albedo and I return." Ainz told the guardians, and they obeyed. He opened a gate and traveled to the mausoleum with the Overseer. For a long time, nobody said a word until Albedo dared to ask, "What are we doing here, my lord?"
"Albedo, I will fight Shalltear alone. Please, you have to understand this." Ainz said. Albedo was in shock and did not want to believe what her master said.
"No, wait! You cannot fight her alone! We will stand by your side! We are the Guardians, we are here to protect you!" she protested.
"I have to do this, Albedo. Understand that this is my fault, so it is my responsibility to fix my error. I will defeat Shalltear and prove myself worthy to rule over Nazarick. I have already decided this, and nothing will change my mind." Ainz told her, cutting her off.
"You know how dangerous Shalltear can be, Lord Ainz! Please, let us do this!" Albedo still tried to persuade him, but failed.
"Should I tell her about the staff and that it is now a world item? Not exactly," Ainz thought, but then told her something else she did not know. "Albedo, if there is a possibility that my HP is very low, I will be teleported to the throne room immediately. I have made arrangements so that I cannot be eliminated outside of Nazarick. Trust in this if you don't trust in me."
"But, how?" Albedo asked, confused.
"You have to promise to keep this a secret. But I will not tell you more than that it is possible," Ainz replied, giving her less information than she expected.
"As you wish," Albedo said.
"Then you may return to the others," Ainz told her, and a gate appeared behind the Overseer. She hesitated to leave him, but decided to go through. Once again, Ainz was alone.
"My mana must be full again. Twelve minutes, if I'm right? That should be enough." Ainz thought to himself as he left for the forest just before Shalltear. He still had things to think about, preparations to make.
"I am risking everything: my life, Nazarick, everything, with this stupid idea. But I must show the power of Ainz Ooal Gown and see with my own eyes what this new power brings. It is a rare occasion to compare myself to a level 100 NPC, so it is the best time to test my ability." Ainz thought to himself as he walked through the dark forest.
Meanwhile, Albedo had already returned to the office, followed by the giant insectoid Cocytus. He took a seat opposite Demiurge and let out steam through his nostrils. Demiurge instantly noticed that something was strange.
"Albedo, where is Lord Ainz? Has he not come back with you?" Demiurge asked, his mind already calculating why his master was not present. He couldn't believe that Ainz would go against Shalltear personally.
"He has gone on to fight Shalltear personally." Albedo proclaimed with a straight face. Demiurge spat out the tea he had just drunk in shock.
"And you let the last Supreme Being go against Shalltear!" Demiurge stood up in rage. He couldn't believe it. He should have intervened, controlled the situation more, so that the last Supreme Being wouldn't die at the hands of one of his subordinates.
"Our lord has the strength to fight Shalltear. We should all believe in that, don't you agree, Demiurge?" Albedo taunted the demon, but he hissed at her for not even feeling stress at the thought of the Supreme One fighting Shalltear alone.
"I won't sit idly by! I will interve-" Demiurge was just about to leave when a giant halberd blocked his way. He looked to the side and saw Cocytus blocking his way. Now he understood and repositioned his glasses.
"I see. Well played." Demiurge said, sitting back down. A mirror appeared on his right.
"We will watch Ainz fight Shalltear. If anything happens, we will be able to aid him. But it was his command and his wish to approach her alone." Albedo told Demiurge, activating the mirror. It showed Ainz walking through the forest, still in his divine gear and with his staff.
"He brought the staff?" Demiurge asked. He never knew much about it, only that it had immense power.
"Of course, the symbol of Nazarick right in his hands. Maybe Shalltear will recognize it and surrender," Albedo said jokingly. But they all knew this was not going to happen.
Ainz broke off the tree branches before him as he approached the location of the Bloody Valkyrie. Suddenly, he heard fighting in the distance. It was the sound of a fight between two immensely powerful forces. Ainz could tell that it was Shalltear fighting someone.
"Someone's fighting her already? I have to get closer fast! It could be a player!" Ainz abandoned walking and instead cast a flight spell. He traveled to her as quickly as possible. From a distance, he could get a glimpse of what was happening. Something was fighting Shalltear and, from what Ainz could see, was surviving.
"It's better to hide myself." He cast [Perfect Unknownable] and disappeared from the world. This skill was extremely helpful, as even high level players couldn't detect him without the right classes or items. However, the moment he takes or deals any damage, he will reappear to the senses of the world.
He flew closer to the scene and saw a being clad in silver armor with several weapons floating beside him. The being was hovering in the air, pointing its weapon at the ground.
"Is that a player? It's possible. But it seems..." He couldn't finish his sentence as Shalltear charged at the silver knight, piercing it with her lance. "Damn, that doesn't look good. So he's definitely not level 100. He could also be a higher level being from this world, which is possible. I have to reevaluate this world, but it always seems to surprise me. The difference in power here is immense. There are level 1 peasants and then this guy, probably around level 70 or so. He's not as powerful as myself, but compared to the other New Worlders, this guy is way above average."
Ainz waited in the air for the fight to end before it was his turn to fight the vampire.
"Who is this Albedo? He seems to be a close match for Shalltear." Demiurge asked nervously, worried that this being would interfere with their plans.
"It could be a player..." she told them and all heads turned to her. "But we haven't met one until now, so it could also be someone from this world."
"This is more dangerous than we anticipated. We have to interfere, Albedo!" Demiurge pleaded for them to join Ainz on the battlefield, but Albedo stood firm.
"That will not come into question. It was his order." she told the demon, who backed down and took deep breaths. He was clearly angry, but he could do nothing but sit there.
The knight took several hits from Shalltear until it retreated a little. For a moment, it looked at Ainz, who was unsure if he saw him or not. Then the knight disappeared.
"What just happened? Did he see me? And what spell was that? It wasn't any spell I knew in Yggdrasil that could teleport a person," he thought. This further suggests that this person was not from Yggdrasil. "But his fighting style was strange. He didn't have any mana at all! But just before he teleported, his health dropped a little. Maybe it's a sort of sacrificial magic? Enough, I should be fighting Shalltear and not making theories right now."
He approached Shalltear, who was standing still, probably waiting for an opponent to attack her. Now she was more like an NPC than ever before. Not even having patrol routes made her just a mob that would attack when provoked.
"So she forgot about the enemy. This mind control must not be very effective if it doesn't allow one to even control the target! I mean, why is Shalltear still here? Well, enough of that. It's time." He prepared himself for a huge battle, but decided to do something first. "Shalltear, do you hear me? If you do, then let me tell you that what I am about to do is something that pains my heart. But I have no choice."
He looked at his staff one last time before the fight. Its powers had greatly increased since he came to this new world, and now he could finally test it. He raised the staff and an ominous aura surrounded it as wind blew everything around. With his other hand, he reached into the void and retrieved a golden leaf.
"Oh yes! I created this one just when I came back from playing as Momon. Let's make sure the guardians don't see this," he said as the mirror displaying the battlefield became blurry and unclear. Now Ainz could fuse the leaf with the staff without fear of being discovered. He pushed the golden leaf onto a divine orb with great force, causing them to fuse together.
"It's strange. It seems harder every time I do this. It wasn't like this at first. But it seems that fusing so much power into one object requires a lot of energy."
Light escaped the fusion and briefly illuminated the area. Then Ainz heard something move.
"Oh, hello Lord Ainz," a feminine voice greeted him with no respect for his greatness.
"Shalltear..." "The light from the fusion must have activated her defense! It counted as an attack!" "Why do you wish to fight me? Am I not your master?" He questioned her in an attempt to stall for more time.
"Yes... Why would I... You attacked me, yes. And now I have to defend myself. I don't know why, but I have to defend myself. And in this case, it's you."
"Select Ability: Temporary World Enemy" he spoke, ignoring Shalltear's sentence completely. He had just tried to lure her into talking so he could choose his next ability at that precise moment.
"What was that?" she asked, confused. She had heard something about a world enemy coming from Ainz's side, but nothing more.
"This is your defeat, Shalltear," he said as a great force descended upon the area. Shalltear could feel it with every inch of her body, even through her legendary class armor. The pressure came from her master.
"Is it working?" Demiurge asked impatiently, eager to see the fight and whether or not Ainz was in danger.
"Yes, we can continue watching," Albedo replied.
The surroundings darkened, the sky turned black, and black fog rose around the Overlord. It circled around the Ruler of Death as if protecting him in any way possible. Then he spoke the words that solidified his victory.
"[Temporary World Enemy]"
Everything changed. It was impossible to differentiate between reality and unreality. Darkness enveloped the area and a dark purple beam shot into the sky, reaching the various skies of the universe. Everyone felt the power streaming through the cosmos, but those in the new world felt it the most. It was like an earthquake, a catastrophe born from an Overlord who willed it, but also didn't. The chaos beam slowly dissipated and so did the tremors it caused in the new world. Many died in these few minutes and many things were destroyed. The guardians could only wonder what this was and if their lord was in danger, but none dared to move and continued watching.
Slowly, the world returned to a sense of normality, but not entirely. When Shalltear looked at the spot where Ainz had once stood, she saw something unbelievable. It was no longer an Overlord, but something else, something darker, filled with unrivaled powers that no one could defeat. It was more of a force than an actual player, with an intimidating appearance that sent shivers down her spine. The being was no longer an Overlord in appearance, but a dark entity made of darkness that had fused itself into a body, shaping itself to resemble an undead. However, despite the darkness's attempts to replicate the persona of the former Overlord, it couldn't. It was ever-changing, reflecting the chaos that swirled inside of it. Ainz Ooal Gown was now more of an ethereal being than he had ever been before, able to shape himself however he wished. At the moment, he was a tall being clad in robes of darkness with sharp spikes as fingers and a skull as a head, with purple flames emanating from it indefinitely. He no longer had simple legs, but rather tentacles made of darkness that constantly shifted. Within him, one could see a faint glow of red, which was his infamous orb. It seemed that even in this form, it stayed with him. But the most extraordinary thing was his staff, which had vanished or rather transformed into something else. The seven golden snakes that once held the divine orb in place were now swirling around the being, protecting the seven orbs floating around its skull, slightly above a dark halo.
The being moved, and it seemed like ages had passed, but in reality, only mere seconds had gone by. It spread pitch black wings of energy behind it and used them to slowly float into the air. It was questionable whether it even needed these wings to fly, but perhaps it could achieve greater speed with them.
Surprisingly, the being started to speak. "Gorz kal tug drit god. Agh it trill be latob." After that, silence was the only thing that could be described as happening. It was like the eye of the storm, the silence before the catastrophe. Shalltear could only stand there, preparing herself for a battle she couldn't win. However, she had to defend herself at all costs, as such was her command.
"Is that... Lord Ainz?"
"Demiurge... I am not even sure. But if he is this being, then I am sure he needs no aid."
Suddenly, the being harnessed dark energy between both of its hands. Shalltear knew what that meant. She had to be ready for battle. The being then shot a beam of the unholiest energy towards her.
"[Negative Impact Shield]!" Shalltear yelled out loud and a red barrier appeared before her. However, it didn't last long, but it was long enough for her to escape in mist form. She teleported behind the being and tried to stab it, but it quickly grabbed her the instant she teleported there. It held her by the neck, squeezing her with immense force. Its face showed no signs of the Ainz that it once was. Instead, it was more like an everchanging skull that perfectly embodied hatred.
"[Einherjar]!" An exact copy of Shalltear appeared before her, striking the being and forcing it to let her go. However, with just one attack, the being made the copy disappear into dust with a swing of negative energy. Shalltear found nothing amusing about this. However, accepting defeat was not an option.
"[Brilliant Radiance]!" She decided to cast a holy spell upon the being, but it was ineffective in hindering it from advancing towards her. It was as if it didn't feel pain at all, it was just driven by the desire to kill.
"Albedo, we have to do something! Whatever that is, it isn't our lord anymore!" Demiurge told her in a raging temper. He had had enough of her games and it had clearly gotten out of control.
"In that, you are right. But I am sure this is only the true power of our lord. Once the fight ends, he will change back. He will change back..." She repeated the last sentence to make sure it would be true. However, nothing was certain, not even she could be sure of it.
"Vadokan quiin u izish. Amukh ash sha izub fuk." The being spoke again, but the words coming out of its mouth were not understandable. Shalltear could only guess at what it was saying. Without any difficulty, it hovered to where Shalltear once stood, who was healing herself quickly with her household. However, the being didn't want to give her any chance to regenerate. It charged at her, and the seven golden snakes also decided to help in its attack. They snapped at Shalltear, biting her everywhere and inflicting all the powers of their elements upon her. She was burning, freezing, being hit with the powers of the stars and whatever was infused in these powerful orbs.
She had to fall back, but the snakes wouldn't let her alone. She decided to retreat, yet the being quickly cast a wall made of darkness before her, trapping her and leaving her no chance to escape. She could only watch as a hand pierced through her, inflicting her with dark energy. She was dead, killed by the hands of an enormous monster. However, it was not over yet. She came back at the cost of almost nothing and was able to fight once again. The entity that killed her seemed to have forgotten about her, but the second she stood up to fight, it turned to her in an instant. Its flaming eyes pierced through her and it emitted a terrifying sound that could kill just by sound. It stormed at her again, casting many flaming orbs in the process. She evaded carefully and tried to pierce it with her lance, but with no success. She hit it once, healed, but immediately received twice the damage back from one of its spells, which hit her directly in the stomach. The being used unholy negative energy, something to which Shalltear, as an undead, was highly resistant but not immune. Stronger magic could always kill her.
She was thrown back to the ground, where the being followed up with another attack. It used a scythe to slice off her head, yet she managed to dodge it at the last second. It tried again and again, but Shalltear evaded carefully. However, there was nothing else she could really do.
"[Triple Maximize Magic: Brilliant Radiance]!" She cast the spell again and this time it halted the being. It seemed meta-magic made a significant difference. She tried again, but the being used its wings to fly towards her, forming a spear of darkness. It wanted to pierce right through her and go on. But she wouldn't let that happen.
With a cry, she released her household to distract the being. Somehow, they did a good job and the being lost some of its interest in Shalltear. She retreated a little and thought about how to defend herself against this monstrosity. It was clearly highly resistant to physical attacks, as it was mostly ethereal or ghostly in appearance. That meant she had to rely on magic, as it had stopped the entity once before.
"[Maximize Magic: Vermillion Nova]!" She cast a fire-based spell upon the monster, but it didn't react as she had expected. Its aggression was now on her and it ignored all the summons around her, hovering towards her. She saw it coming and dodged the spear thrust at the last second, but didn't see the tentacles made of darkness hit her from behind. Somehow, she felt that the being had had enough of her and wanted to kill her as fast as it could.
It was in a rage, a state of mind that clouded its senses and drove it to kill and destroy. It tried many times, but the red-clad vampire always evaded or survived its attacks. And it was not pleased. A burst of negative energy, similar to the spell, was released from the being and destroyed a large part of the surroundings. Even Shalltear lost her footing and left herself open. That's when the being attacked, using its powers over darkness to create many spears and throw them at her. She dodged the first ones, but eventually, more and more spears hit her, piercing through her from every direction. She couldn't move anymore, she was stunned in place instantly by the pain and destruction of her body. Now it was all over, there was no second chance for her anymore. She had failed.
"Forgive me... Lord Ainz." With her last breath, Shalltear spoke the words that everyone should say after attacking their master. But with her death, the swirling mass had nothing to kill. It wanted to find more life to exterminate, but somehow its time was up. The energy that it had at its prime slowly vanished into thin air, and the streams of darkness disappeared and diminished. The seven golden snakes swirled around each other, recreating the staff once again and grabbing the orb in their mouths. The being changed in size and became smaller again. Soon, the image of an Overlord could be seen, yet some darkness still encompassed him. Its skeletal visage returned, along with all of his items back in their proper places. Instantly, he fell to his knees, weak after draining all of his mana to become the most powerful entity in the world for 12 and a half minutes. He had no memories of when he changed form; he was asleep, or at least that's what he felt. Control over the being that he released from himself was not his or anyone else's. It was no one's. It simply did what it was meant to do: to kill everything that came near it.
So, the darkness rose back from whence it came, and all that was left was a weak Overlord, drained of all of his mana. He went down on his knees, suffering from fatigue of the mind.
"Wh-What happened?" Ainz asked himself, but he didn't know the answer. He looked around and couldn't recognize the surroundings anymore. Everything was devastated, destroyed by some kind of all-powerful force. "Did I do this? I only remember activating my new ability. But then everything became clouded and I found myself in a pitch-black void. Is this the consequence of becoming a world enemy? Losing sanity or control over one's body?" If that was the case, he couldn't use it again, or it could have ended even worse. What if he would hurt his NPCs? Such a thing he couldn't allow possibly. He had to find a way to control this power, or never use it again.
"Lord Ainz!" Albedo called out, running towards him with Cocytus and Demiurge following closely behind. "Are you okay? Are you injured?" She asked in a panic, concern etched on her face.
Ainz looked at her, his expression tired and confused. "I'm fine, Albedo. Just a bit exhausted. No serious injuries befell me." His voice was quieter than usual, as if he were not entirely present.
"Let me help you." Albedo said, reaching out a hand to assist him. Ainz took it, using her support to get back on his feet. Although he was able to stand, he leaned heavily on his staff for support.
"Now, let's go home," Ainz said, gesturing towards the portal that would take them back to his office. The others nodded, clearly wanting to ask him many questions, but Ainz wanted a moment to collect his thoughts. "I promise to answer all of your questions, but I need some time to think. If you'll excuse me, I'll be in my chambers." And with that, he teleported to his private room, where he could be alone to contemplate what had happened and what was to come.
In frustration, Ainz pounded his fist into his bed, splitting it in half. "I used the ability, activated it, and then I was gone. When I returned, I was kneeling on the ground in a world that had changed without me. I won't let that happen again."
"I need some time for myself. After that, I will revive Shalltear."

So Ainz used a slot for the world enemy ability. And as you can guess it didnt end well. I tried to go another path with this fight, so it doesnt get any boring. Know that everything will be different from the og in some ways.
Question from a Guest:
-Can he use wish upon star unlimited time?
No that is still reliable on his experience, which he cant gain indefinetly by the creation spell. But he could create a ring that would allow him to use it without a loss of experience. Neat isnt it!
