Chapter 5: The Real Kevin

Agent BM: That's true

On Saturday, Kevin invited Bessie to lunch at the Burpin' Burger.

"You know, Kevin, when you invited to lunch I was expecting you to take me to a more high class restaurant." Bessie told him.

"Well those places probably wouldn't just let two middle school kids dine there alone. Besides I like this place." Kevin explained.

Bessie was surprised. A rich guy liked Kevin liked regular greasy fast food burgers? They went inside, got a table, and ordered their food. As they waited in silence, Kevin spoke up.

"So...Bessie...how long have you been in a wheelchair?"

Bessie looked at him.

"I'm sorry, too personal?" Kevin asked.

"No, it's okay. I'm used to it. When I was nine, I got hit by a car. I can still walk, but just barely, takes a lot of effort to do so, can't feel much in my legs anymore." Bessie explained.

"Oh that's terrible. But at least you're alive, makes you a fighter, like my sister."

"You mention your sister a lot, tell me about her."

"Oh, well Lucy is about the same age as me, few minutes younger. She loves her looks, and she's tough too, we always had each others backs. As you can guess it's not easy having our last names."

"Where is she anyway? If she's the same age as you, shouldn't she be in the same school?"

"Oh, uh, well, you see..." Kevin started nervously.

"Order 66." called a worker.

"Oh, look at that, our burgers are ready, I'll go get them." Kevin told, before he bolted off.

Bessie was now confused, it seemed Kevin was hiding something, but what could it be? She had to know.

As the two ate their burgers Bessie decided to find out who exactly Kevin's sister was.

"Kevin...who exactly is your sister?" she questioned.

Kevin looked at her.

"I'm sorry, but you keep talking about her, but you never really say much about her."

Kevin swallowed his burger, and then pulled out his phone. After pressing some things, he showed her a picture of girl around their age. She had blonde hair in a ponytail, and brown eyes.

"This is my twin sister Lucy."

"She's pretty. But where is she?"

Kevin sighed, and then began explaining.

Kevin and Lucy used to go to a different school across town. It was another day at school, and as usual Melanie, one of the more popular girls, was teasing Kevin over his last name, calling him Fluggerbutt.

"Quit calling me that! I hate it." Kevin told.

"Fluggerbutt, such a loser name." teased Melanie with her friends laughing.

"Hey, leave my brother alone." Lucy demanded.

"Well if it isn't Fluggerbutt's loser sister, the nutjob." replied Melanie teasingly.

"Don't call me that, don't ever call me that!" Lucy began to shout.

"You're both losers, you know. You have stupid names and you both barely have friends. And you nutjob, we've seen you when playing dodgeball and the detentions you get." Melanie taunted.

Lucy clenched her fists, while Kevin backed away, he knew what was gonna happen.

"Ooh, the loser girl's getting angry. Whatcha gonna do, loser? Whatcha gonna do?" Melanie teased, as she poked Lucy.

This was the final straw, and Lucy started to slip her jean jacket off. She began to raise her arm, but before she could do anything, Kevin had thrown a water bottle at Melanie, splashing her.

"This was a designer sweater, and this backpack cost..."

Lucy then punched Melanie smack dab in the face. She slammed Melanie into the lockers and began beating her.

"Don't, ever, talk to me, like that! You little piece of (bleep)!" Lucy shouted.

Melanie's friends ran away in fear as students surrounded the twins, encouraging Lucy to fight. By the time a teacher stopped the fight, Melanie's face was bleeding badly from Lucy's punches.

"She started it, she was..." Lucy tried to defend.

"I don't wanna hear it. Detention for both of you, now. I'm having the principal call your parents too." the teacher replied in a stern voice.

Bessie was shocked hearing the story. She never figured a sweet looking girl from the picture could be so vicious.

"Got expelled after that, Melanie ended up in the hospital, her parents tried to press charges. One of my friends ended up provoking Lucy again and she nearly broke his leg. I ended up here while Lucy ended up in a center for troubled kids across town. The staff came late at night and took her. That wasn't fun seeing. I can visit her, sure, but we've always had each other's backs and depended on each other. Now she's alone and I can't protect her, and she can't protect me. Bessie I know I was mean to you when we first met, but considering what I've been through, can you blame me?" Kevin asked.

"Well, after hearing all that not really."

Bessie now realized that Kevin wasn't a stuck rich boy who thought he was better than everyone else. He was just a kid who had had a rough time at his old school, missed his sister, and was insecure to due to people making fun of his last name.

When they finished eating, Kevin decided to wait with Bessie while she waited for her ride.

"You know, Kevin you're actually a pretty nice guy." Bessie told him sincerely.

Kevin looked at her surprised.

"Well thanks Bessie." he replied.

When Bessie's mom came, she helped her daughter into the car, and then drove off. Then Kevin went to his family's limo. As they both drove home, they were thinking the same thing.

"I can't do this anymore." Kevin whispered to himself.

"I can't do this anymore." Bessie said under her breath.
