Chapter 18

Authors Note :Thank you for the support. More on the way.

When Brooke awoke it a nighttime. She hadn't even realized she had fallen asleep.

Brooke gazed around their bedroom. Her eyes landing on Lucas.

(I've been asleep for hours. It's way too quiet. Where are the kids?) Brooke asked.

(They are with skills and Bevin. I thought you could use a second to digest everything.)

(Without having to think about anyone else but yourself.) Lucas explained.

(Thank you. I need exactly that.) (I need security for the store and I want our life to remain untouched by this. It's affected me enough. I don't want this to burden the kids too.) Brooke explained.

(I understand that but we can't just wait around and see what either of them may try to do especially Julian. What if you hadn't been able to get him away from you?) Lucas questioned.

Brooke swallowed hard. (I've thought about that. I'm just a prize to be won. A fantasy.)

(I want you to be able to protect yourself. Against him or anyone else who's bold enough to act this way.) Lucas explained.

Brooke sighed deeply and got out of bed. She went into her closet and pulled out a locked box.

(I have a gun and know how to use it.) Brooke replied.

Even though she never wanted to be put into that position again.

If she was she would be prepared.

Lucas then displayed dinner on a tray.

(My favorite comfort food.) Brooke said. With a smile.

The two ate in comfortable silence.

Afterwards they laid together in front of the fireplace in their bedroom.

(Do you see me differently now? I feel tainted. Vulnerable.) Brooke asked.

The expression on Lucas's face softened.

(I see you the same way i always have. Strong. Fearless. Independent. Lively.)

(You're the sun bright beautiful all consuming.) Lucas replied.

Lucas leaned over and kissed her gently.

Brooke kissed him back.

He caressed her face. Ran his fingers through her hair.

(You're my best friend and so much more.) Brooke said. The emotion in her voice thick.

(If I could take this away from you I would. The guilt the shame all of it.) Lucas reassured her.

Brooke felt tears well up in her eyes. (You're my home.) She stated matter of fact.

She didn't know when she would feel ready or comfortable enough to make love again.

That insecurity came bubbling to the surface.
