P̶u̶p̶p̶y̶ Kitty Love AU part 2

Follows the story from the next chapter 2 and into chapter 3 in the manga "Puppy Love" by Tsuchida Haru. And of course, there is a lot of added stuff for SubKam!

It's been a long time since I've updated anything let alone this AU idea. So I'm happy I can finally post something here again! 😊 I'll follow up with more from this manga au and omegaverse next. I hope you enjoy it.

Rating T- pretty mild fluff for this chapter. Pre-relationship.

"I'm the cat you saved all those years ago." Kamui proclaimed, with starry eyes grasping both of Subaru's hands on his own.

Really what was Subaru supposed to say to that? Sure he'd known of sentient animals, cat spirits, kitsunes, very sentient familiars…in his line of work.

But this story seemed unreal, even to him. Mostly because…

There was absolutely no way he'd forget meeting someone like Kamui regardless of the form he took. His soul, his true essence was far too stunning, pure, and ethereal to be anything but drawn towards. An image forever etched into his heart's memory.

He'd barely known this man for a few weeks, and his mind was constantly filled with images of a shy yet dazzling smile alongside demure yet enchanting violet eyes.

Kamui tilted his head cutely, looking for any sort of response. His lips curled up to a pout as he called the other's name. "Subaru?"

"Ah…oh…r-right. I-I ah…" Subsru bit his tongue internally cursing himself for his stuttering. He hadn't acted like this since he was a teenager. "Now, that you mention it…you do resemble a kitten. Your ah…. demeanor and facial expressions match up so well…it's rather cute."

Kamui flushed, opening his mouth only to cover it quickly with a hand. He glanced over the other male for a moment, gaze inspecting, lingering. The awkward laugh and shifting gaze told him enough. He hung his head, dejected. "You really don't remember…it was quite long ago."

Whatever else Subaru could have said or done at that moment would never feel enough. Not when the usual light in those actually…rather cat-like eyes seemed to dim, and his expression fell.

He remembered having the courtesy to at least escort Kamui home…a very quiet…and awkward trip. But…beyond that…

'My response certainly didn't make things better…'

Subaru berated himself, hands holding the side of his head as he released an exasperated sigh.

Sitting alone with these thoughts a lukewarm cup of tea, left him saddened.

A light knocking followed by the sound of his door turning in.

"You're still up, huh?" Hokuto's merry and knowingly bright voice broke the silence in the room. She has a natural gift for sending when Subaru needs to talk to someone.

"Hokuto…" Subaru looked up towards his twin, feeling childish as he lost his words. He looked up to her with saddened, helpless puppy eyes.

"Aww…what's wrong? Did your date last night not go well?" Hokuto questioned her tone a perfect blend of compassion and amusement. Ever kind and nurturing the elder of the twins leaned over and wrapped her arms around her brother in a comforting hug.

"How did you…Well, it was just…surprising…" Subaru began to retell, mind in a state of disarray. He knew denial would only make his sister more determined to tease him.

"You see…."

Hokuto listened quietly, her lips quirking on several occasions, seeing how easily her brother gushed over little details of the younger boy.

"So he said…he's a cat…and one you saved?"

"That's right…"

"And you don't think he was kidding? Or I don't know really awkward gay flirting?"

Subaru flushed at the latter accusation, waving his hands about frantically. "There's no way Kamui would be trying to do that…. it's not like he sees me like that and-" He paused seeing his twin shaking her head, unconvinced. She'd only seen Kamui for brief visits to his workplace, but every single time their conversations shifted to Subaru. The mere name of her brother made those violet eyes light up in a manner that put the stars to shame.

"Anyway I didn't get that impression at all…it's weird…it's not like I know him that well…but I could just tell…he's not someone to lie like that."

"Subaru…" Hokuto sighed fondly, watching her brother flustered like this. So concerned, drawn to another in a way he hadn't been for many many years. She couldn't let these two drift apart. "I don't quite understand what he's getting at but I know the only way you're going to feel better is if you go and talk to him again. Who knows…maybe he's from a spiritual family like we are?"

"I thought that but…" Subaru paused, glancing down at his reflection in the empty coffee cup. There certainly was a strong spiritual power within the male, but an oddly protective nature came over Subaru, hoping the younger man never had to live with the kind of danger such power was used for. He couldn't let someone so precious slip from a misunderstanding."You're right I need to see him again…"

"I'm glad you're in agreement." Hokuto hummed cheerily. She petted the top of her brother's head, like comforting a wounded puppy. "Go get 'em, Subaru! Clear the air and you can go back to fawning over him like usual. Oh, but you should be more direct, a cutie like Kamui isn't to be single for long! And if he's anything like you, he hasn't noticed from just those pining looks you give him."

"Hokuto! It's not like that!" Subaru proclaims to unconvincing eyes, face burning a new tinge of red. "But thank you…"

Hokuto shook her head patting her twin's back sympathetically. She hoped Kamui wasn't as dense as her beloved younger brother.

"Subaru is exceptionally gifted…"

"His powers are beyond any we've seen from generations before."

"Regardless of how much work he's given he never shirts his duties. "

"That grandson of yours is remarkable. I don't think we've ever heard a word of complaint even as a child. He's accepted his role so naturally. "

"Naturally, Subaru understands the magnitude of his fate. He values his work in leading the clan's overall personal inclinations, something nearly unheard of for one so young…"

Words of praise from the clan elders felt distant as if they were talking of an image of Subaru. Not his true self.

Leaving personal matters behind in favor of his fate…his duties as clan leader. Was that something to be so proud of? Giving up every dream…goal…in life in favor of helping others in their life…

Barely sleeping… merely existing most days…that was his life for so long.

Only a brief year passed and Subaru became 'selfish', falling in love for the first time only to be crushed by the magnitude of betrayal. Barely coming to himself even 10 years later.

He fell back into the old routine. He became overworked and extended kindness to all around him. Yet, always he kept holding the harshest ot judgments towards himself. His grandmother has been right, he should have never let his heart be swayed.

Subaru had sworn he'd never get attached to another and he swore this to himself. Even close friends held a liability…especially with the field of work he was involved with. And yet…this time he couldn't turn away, couldn't block out the feeling of warmth from creeping in, nor silence the drumming heartbeat he got in the other's presence. Whatever this was…Kamui was someone important. Even on days when he meant to simply head right back after a job, he found himself subconsciously walking down that familiar road and stopped in front of an all too familiar pet shop.

His heart decided, overpowering his mind, his better judgment. He'd become attached, and couldn't let that go. A misunderstanding or not he had to see the younger man again! His precious smiles, and encouragement to do what makes him happy…he couldn't bear to be without.

Subaru arrived at the Tokyo shopping center, late one morning, with a rare sense of being refreshed. He examined his perfectly silky and brushed dark hair, and smoothed down his pressed and proper clothing. Freshly showered, dressed, and building confidence he returned to that familiar store.

His feet had a way of moving ahead of his mind. He hadn't thought of the words to approach Kamui, to apologize for the lack of communication. He simply needed to be in the young man's proximity again, as though every step away left him deprived of the air around him.

Simply living life according to his fate, Subaru was drowning, gasping for breath, surfacing only to be pushed down under, weighted with immeasurable pressure. Seeing himself so close to the surface, to freedom, he rose. Taking in this new feeling a breath of life.

"Kamui…" Subaru exhales the name, far more longing than intended.

"I haven't seen you in a while," Kamui notes, looking down shyly, absently playing with a lock of hair falling in front of his face. He turns to look closer to his favorite visitor, the freshness in his "Subaru? I…you look well…" He murmured again turning his focus downward. His cheeks blooming new shades of red. "Well rested…"

"Thank you," Subaru gently returns, rubbing nervously at the side of his face. "I've had some changes…" Well for him they were immense. "I'm already fulfilling my duties to my family. So I find it more than…okay for me to take time off. To decline a job…especially when I'm making myself sick with a lack of rest is necessary..."

So long as it wasn't a task of such high rank, others couldn't cover for him, he became bolder…allowing himself to live…he'd say no when he needed to… he had the time now to do things he wanted. And what he wanted more than anything was honestly.

'-to have more time to see you…'

Subaru thinks, yet is not ready to vocalize nor admit to himself his motivation. His eyes had a way of giving himself away, green eyes bright and glossy, following the young man in front of him with every movement.

"I'm glad," Kamui encourages, finally working up the nerve to look into those beautiful eyes. He felt a fluttering feeling in his stomach, smiling entirely innocently and demurely. "You worked yourself too hard. And deserve time to breathe.."

Subaru nods, a curve melting from his lips. With this beautiful motivation gazing at him, Subaru found himself managing a much healthier schedule (for him), not accepting every job or task coming his way.

He'd actually slept and the first thing to come to mind that next morning and each morning had been the tiny smiles of the pet store worker.

"You're looking nice today," Kamui comments stealing serene, affectionate glances. "I don't think I've seen you without a coat in a while. It looks…" he pauses his gazing for a moment, turning his gaze anywhere else. "Really nice."

Subaru felt a sharp pinch in the center of his chest. "Thank you. I… am glad you think so…" He murmurs, awkwardly brushing back a stray strand of dark hair back into place.

"I don't think I've seen you wear other colors in the times I've seen you," Kamui mentions, seeming relaxed. His tender smile turned to a Cheshire Cat grin. He was becoming more comfortable…"That sh-shade of green looks good on you, it um…brings out your eyes."

The admittance brought about a shyer, flustered smile. Could that have come out any more nervous? He berates himself, swallowing.

"Thank you," Subaru takes the compliment with a brilliant gleam. He feels something inside him go light, he resists the urge to thread his hand through the younger man's soft hair. "My sister made this outfit." He explains, leaving out the mess that his outfits were to help 'win over' the young shop worker's heart.

"Wow, really?" Kamui curiously takes a step further. His hand unconsciously grasps the dark green sleeve, inspecting the seamless design. "It looks just like what you'd see at the mall. No, even more like a personal stylist! Your sister really made this?"

Subaru nods, a hint of pride stirring in his eyes. "She certainly has a gift." He mentions, almost letting it slip how she wanted to share her 'gift' next with Kamui.

"She definitely is, she's very kind too, I haven't seen her in a while though," Kamui admits with a smile. He holds a fondness in his eyes, something about the older twin felt instantly familial. "But seeing all this work, here I can see she's been busy."

"She's been preoccupied with classes at CLAMP school, but I know she always likes seeing you," Subaru tells him, mind wandering. 'And designing your potential date night outfits…' In hopes of getting her clueless brother to "make a move" and "admit" to himself this went beyond a strong friendship.

Subaru stubbornly clung to the latter stance, they were very close friends. His mind often questioned if that conclusion was entirely accurate.

"That's cool, she's studying fashion there?"

"Ah…not quite more like she's been assisting to teach some of the university classes."

"That's amazing."

"Mm."

"And you too!" Kamui exclaims, louder than planned. He ducks his head, flushing a bright pink. The bloom of color in his features brings further beauty to his natural features. "She always talks about how much you help people at your work and how kind you are and that we should-"

Subaru paused, body feeling entirely too warm as he took a step back. "We should?"

"Ah, you must be tired of waiting by the entrance, come inside," Kamui quickly shakes his head, face painting beautiful arrays of colors but he refuses to meet Subaru's eyes.

He leads them further into the shop, grasping a small black kitten pawing at his legs. Kamui gives in easily scooping the cat up into his arms. The feline and Kamui's bright doe eyes mimic each other. Both sets gazing up affectionately at Subaru. Cooling the heat from his expression, Kamui begins again, "Anyway, it's nice to see you like this. You seem more relaxed."

Subaru smiles at that, seeing the faint signs of those lips twitching, lifting higher. "I should thank you…"

Kamui perks up at the comment, head tilting just barely to the side. The tiny kitten doing the same, blinking slowly at the shop's frequent visitor.

"You…help motivate me to make things better for myself and so…" Subaru takes a deep breath. What about this proclamation made him so nervous he couldn't place but- he felt his entire body warm at the declaration. "I'm setting up my apartment with but soon I'd like to come back here and adopt a kitten!."

Kamui blinks, pausing for but a second before he beams, lips curling up at the declaration. Before he can utter a word he feels the kitty in his arms pawing at him, squirming around and seemingly grasping for Subaru.

"Mrrrow!" Then high pitch tone of the quiet kitten emerged. She continued to scramble from Kamui's arms, paw reaching, patting the other man's arm.

"What? Do you want to go to Subaru's home already?" Kamui leaned in towards the feline, listening to his meows and chirps with a sense of clarity. He beams, hearing more "meows" and adding brightly. "He's really taken a liking to you."

"Ah," Subaru blinks, loss for words as he gently pets the top of the kitten's head. It purrs upon contact, and the dazzling shine in Kamui's eyes at the notion practically seals the deal. This felt like fate.

"Oh, but of course you can come and see all the kittens we have before making your decision."

Kamui speaks as though Subaru's heart hadn't latched onto the two kittens before him.

Just a week had passed, and the apartment filled up with soft toys, scratching posts, cat trees, and everything the little kitten could want.

Truly, though with an enamoring scene earlier at the pet store, those fawning gazes from the cat and Kamui, as he had to head home... How was Subaru to choose any other but the black cat snuggled in Kamui's arms?

He turned the key in the lock, a soft click alerting the tiny resident inside. The sound of little feet leaving a table and jumping to the floor. As soon as the door swung open, Subaru was greeted enthusiastically by the sight of a small black cat brushing around his legs.

"I'm home," Subaru sweetly knelt, scooping up the little feline and hugging it close.

Being greeted at the end of the work day like this…is really nice.

Subaru reflects, feeling warmth continue to blossom in his chest. He feels the little kitten crawling up his chest and burying itself into his neck. "Kazumi."

The tiny creature took immediately to the name, once its owner read through a potential list. A name meaning both "peace" and "beauty", the former certainly something Subaru needed much more of in life. The latter is something he happened to be blessed with seeing on a regular basis.

The entirely unconscious naming ended up sounding a little too similar to the beautiful pet store worker's name. Subaru found himself hopeless realizing too late what he'd done, his sister all but falling off the couch laughing when he'd told her.

There was no going back. Stubbornly, his kitten stayed loyal to the name, ignoring any other Subaru spout. Even turning his little head away, sighs slipping out akin to a huff. Kamui and Kazumi… it seemed he wouldn't be separating the idea of cats and Kamui any time soon.

Times like these he felt his heart too full to worry much. Of course, his sister was immediately bemused by the name but Kamui hadn't shown any objections when hearing it. So all was settled.

"You're so cute," Subaru murmured, feeling the little fireball burrow its way further into his shoulder and pawing at his heart.

"It's been a long day, Kazumi.." He found himself visibly relaxing, tense shoulders falling and a smile gracing his face. "You wouldn't believe the clients I had today…I certainly hadn't expected the police to get involved when finding exactly how their poltergeist came to be…"

The stories of both the spirits and their living counterparts never ceased to be surprising. Regardless of how many years Subaru held the title of the Sumeragi leader.

While talking he found the clueless kitten, glancing up, nuzzling his neck cutely. Subaru gave in to the urge to snap a quick picture with his phone.

He sent one immediately to Hokuto who adored and agreed to help care for the feline, being just next door.

"I could also send them…." Subaru became struck by the idea, remembering fondly, as Kamui clasped his arm during their last visit.

"Oh, since you're gonna be a first-time cat owner, I should give you my number…just in case you need anything," Kamui mentioned with a faint blush. It was a clear excuse, both knowing this but Subaru happily went along with it, his nervousness preventing him from asking Kamui so much earlier.

Now that he had this chance. Didn't it seem perfect to send a few pictures to the one who helped him adopt little Kazumi?

"But would it seem weird to send them to Kamui this late at night…." Subaru pondered over the idea, leaving the screen on his phone open, Kamui's contact profile waiting on display.

Taking matters into his paws, little Kazumi wandered over to where his owner was sitting. He playfully tapped at the screen seemingly knowing more than he let on.

"Ah!" Subaru exclaims seeing the screen on his phone changing quickly. The dial tone from the other end brings him to a nervous state. He hurriedly picked up the phone, straightening his posture as though the recipient could see through the screen.

"Subaru?" He heard the curious, soft tone from the other end. He didn't sound the least bit groggy despite the timing. Perhaps, he was a night owl?

"Ah, Kamui? Oh y-yes sorry I…" Subaru clutched the phone tight, stumbling over his words nervously. "I know I called you so suddenly and-"

"Is everything okay?" Kamui's voice sweetly beckoned from the other end. His tone is soft and soothing, helping Subaru relax in his posture.

"No it's not like that well I…had been meaning to send you a picture of Kazumi and then he got a hold of the phone and…"

The frazzled tone melted Kamui, making him gush. "Aww… it sounds like you have your hands full. Is he still as restless as ever?"

"Yes…" Subaru nodded, glancing down affectionately at the energetic furball in his lap. His late-night zoomies led little Kazumi to lap around his entire apartment multiple times. Still, he was restless.

"Have you tried the harness I suggested for him?" Kamui suggests, hearing the sound of something like several pens rolling and crashing to the ground.

Subaru winces, grasping the kitten stopping him before he knocks anything fragile from the counter. "I'm still finding it hard to get used to the idea of 'walking' such a tiny cat but he does seem to like exploring."

"Have you gotten out today?" Kamui inquires, biting the inside of his cheek. "Ah-besides work I mean…"

"Isn't it too late for that now?" Subaru asked with hesitation, amazed as the feline hopped from his lap and towards the tiny harness in the corner of the living room.

"It is technically morning now…" Kamui offers glancing at the clock in the corner.

"Shouldn't you be resting?" Subaru voices, eyes lowered with concern. Belatedly, he felt guilt for rejecting the proposal.

"I could say the same for you." Kamui teases with a soft laugh. "Then how about in a few hours when the sun is up…around 6:00? We could meet at the same park."

"Ah, I can do that," Subaru nervously responds, swallowing hard. This would be their first meeting outside of the pet store in some time. Just the two of them.

"Then it's a date," Kamui exclaims happily, not thinking about the implication of a saying until far after the call ends.

Subaru found himself swallowing hard, berating himself for misinterpretations up until the point he finally, made it over. His newly adopted kitten in his harness to walk over, but tiring out sooner than expected, he took to being carried and cuddled by Subaru the rest of the walk over.

"Subaru!" Kamui happily waved, immediately jolting up from the bench he found in the middle of the park. With the sun rising behind a glow cast over his features, angelic.

"Aw, Kazumi, I haven't seen you in a while. You're as cute as ever!" Kamui leaned over, closing into Subaru's personal space. Their arms brushed. He seemed to naturally close in here, not unlike the kitten in his arms contently stealing every bit of warmth it could muster. "So how have things been going with him at home?"

Kamui gestures for them towards the emptied bench. Subaru sat an appropriate distance apart only to feel Kamui sliding that bit closer.

"It's been really nice. Having someone there whenever I come back. I feel rather happy," Subaru admits, a fondness glowing in his emerald eyes. His hands petting the kitten in his lap. "When I look at him…I feel like I have the strength to keep going even when the days are really hard. I want to care for him and give him the best life possible."

The heartfelt proclamation left Kamui and Kazumi, or as his mind dubbed it, his "two kittens" visibly moved. A tightness pulled to Kamui's chest specifically, lips parting beautifully meaning to say something.

"Or I guess it's something like that… I've never been too good with words," Subaru awkwardly brushed his proclamation off.

Kamui shakes his head at this, lips curving up. "No, I think what you said was…rather sweet and…" He placed his hand comfortingly over Subarus's palm, clutching it tightly. A squeeze of reassurance. "Perfect."

"Mrrrrow!" Sharp meows escaped the small kitty, once quietly resting on its owner's lap. It seemed to huff, paw swatting at the hand covering Subaru's hand, before brushing against his arm in a territorial manner.

"Haha, it seems he's grown very attached. Maybe a little jealous we've been talking without giving him attention," Kamui surmised with a laugh, attempting to appease the fluffy tyrant by picking him up, petting between his ears as he had at the shop.

Seeing the kitten staring up at Kamui in such a way. Seemingly intimidating, the kitten's eyes lowered challenging for Subaru's attention.

Kamui returned the look with a questioning gaze. Subaru couldn't resist.

Kamui blinked at the sound of the phone's click.

"Ah sorry, I just you both were so cute I had to take a picture," Subaru sheepishly admits, calming his expression before adding. "I'll send it to you."

"Okay!" Kamui happily agreed, and a moment of realization struck. Kamui blushed a deep shade of red. "B-but wait…both? I can't possibly be as cute as this little kitten?"

"We'll…" Subaru laughed awkwardly scratching the side of his face. 'He can't possibly be unaware just how adorable he is. Right?'

With a new kitten making himself at home and gobbling his favorite treats, Subaru had a convenient excuse to come to the shop more.

"Take your time looking around," Kamui greeted Subaru as happily as ever, bouncing on his heels, and pressing his lips together to form a cute smile. It appeared Subaru wasn't the only one to notice Kamui. His sweet kittenish nature earned him quite the fan base amongst all their customers.

Starry-eyed students squealed catching so much as a glance from Kamui. He remained entirely unaware. Subaru felt an odd bitter feeling deep into his core. His fingers curled into his palm clenching down.

Kamui had already turned on his heel, heading to the adjacent aisles to help the fawning customers waving at him. "I've gotta help out the other customers but I'll be back."

Subaru nodded at this, knowing this time to be busy. Though they couldn't talk now it it felt enough to see his…friend? (He could say they were now couldn't be?) Working hard, greeting him with such joy. He got to see Kamui in his work mode with other customers. And he felt a wave of delight, recognizing the difference between the polite curl of lips and a genuine Kamui smile. Said the boy seemed to sense the attention on him, turning back towards Subaru. A tiny intimate smile formed, leaving the receipient breathless. Not that he could pinpoint why.

Yet, here this beautiful young man was, smiling in a genuine gentle way Kamui did not with anyone else.

'There's so many types of treats…Maybe I should have brought Kazumi along…' Subaru perused the aisles of the shop, seeing the countless brands of treats and food. All of which his kitten had been particular upon rejecting.

"Oh sorry I'm-" he started seeing another presence, a tall young man around Kamui's age brushing by. He looked up to see an unimpressed, blank expression.

'That's Fuuma…right?' Subaru tries to recall, Kamui's coworker and close friend who seemed a bit perturbed by his presence. Dark amber eyes looked over Subaru scrutinizing him. He hadn't voiced a word only eyes expressing the vague displeasure.

"Oh sorry, I must be in your way… I'll just go to the next aisle and look…" Subaru excused himself, speaking as calmly and politely as possible. The last thing he wanted was to develop problems with those so close to Kamui. Whatever their relationship may be... "I hope you have a nice day…" he adds awkwardly hoping to diffuse the tension.

"…." The tall coworker only continued to look Subaru over, a frown forming on his face. His evaluation continues.

'Maybe I should leave?' Subaru thought about the growing tension. Clearly, this person cared for Kamui.

"Lately…" Fuuma began to speak up, seeming to hold worry furrowing his brows. "You've been meeting up with Kamui, right? Outside of work… or so I've heard."

What was that…a hint of anger or something more possessive? Both? Yet somehow seeming restrained perhaps for Kamui's sake.

"Oh, right," Subaru began, scratching nervously at his cheek. "This is my first time owning a cat so I ask him for advice and he's been helpful…and so…"

"Tch," Fuuma looked up at Subaru, seeming either unimpressed or unconvinced. "Do you truly believe that's all there to what you're doing?" A harsh silence began, tension brewing extra thick. Fuuma looked like he intended to say more, but seeing Kamui so happy as he was, bouncing around the shop, he kept it in.

"I'm not sure what you mean…" Subaru tried to play it off calmly and redirected their conversation. "Ah, since you're here I'm having trouble picking a cat treat perhaps you can recommend something?"

"…"

Another bout of silence stirred between them. Briefly, words from earlier came out, quickly and sharply. "The time you spend together may be that simple to you. But do you think Kamui thinks the same?" A frown settled on the younger man's features but he seemed to gradually ease up.

"What Kamui thinks..." Subaru repeated, feeling a tension in his chest. He received no further clarification.

"And as far as your cat goes, Try this one," Fuuma suddenly spoke out, holding out a bright blue bag of treats, the image of a black kitten much like Subaru's cat displayed on the front of the packet."It's something new we just got in stock but I'd recommend it. It's been possible with our customers. ."

"Ah," Subaru began, thrown through another loop. It seemed the overprotective mode shifted to his customer service side. This intimidatingly tall younger man seemed to relax, expression neutral whilst he recommended a catalog of other add-ons. "This toy as well seems to be popular"

It seemed despite his looming appearance, Fuuma kept track of customers' purchases and comments.

Seeming convinced to keep Subaru a paying customer, the young cat owner found his arms full of toys and treats to bring home.

A silent message conveying, 'If you're going to take up Kamui's time like this at work, you're at least going to pay the price like any other customer.'

The next visit proved more pleasant, seeing Kamui's gorgeous face first thing.

"Good evening, Subaru," Kamui beamed, practically racing to the entrance of the shop.

"I've been coming home pretty irregularly…" Subaru speaks with lament, head bowing down a bit. " My sister had helped a lot but thought it might help to find something here to help so Kazumi isn't too hungry. He can be particular about exactly when he needs to bedfed."

Kamui pursed his lips. He quietly, pondered over the idea, turning down the aisles and taking Subaru along. His fingers wrapped around Subaru's wrist bringing a pleasant spark of warmth.

"I have the perfect thing then," Kamui ensured, picking up a tall metallic device with a curved plastic bowl on the bottom. "We have new brands of automatic food dispensers for cats and dogs. They help a lot for those working late or wanting to make sure their pets are fed at the same time."

With Kamuis's confident-sounding spiel, and those glossy expectant doe eyes how could he resist?

"I'll take it," Subaru responded instantly, Kamui's sale 'tactics' or perhaps his presence winning him over.

"Thank you for your purchase, Subaru. Do you want to pick up one of our new laser pointers to go with it?" Kamui offered, cutely picking up the mouse-shaped pointer and pressing the button, a red dot followed by the store's kittens.

"You're quite the salesman," Subaru responds fondly, nodding in agreement. Sure, this beautiful man could sell him then store if he weren't careful.

"You've done quite well, Subaru. I've received numerous calls, and words of praise from your last clients. Your powers seem to have grown as well," Subaru's grandmother praises him with a sense of pride. She closes her eyes admitting the latter. "I know I've placed pressure on you to lead our clan since you were young and maybe that's been too much."

"No, grandmother it's not-"

"It is true," She holds up her hand head shaking slowly. "With the powers you were given, you were destined to abide by such a fate. I know you've been through far too much, so young...so now I'm glad to see you coming into your own. You seem much happier lately more at peace with yourself…"

"Oh…" Subaru flushed immediately coming to the thought of sparkling violet eyes and a dark ball of furball curled up to him. His two kittens, made him helplessly smile. "Is that so?"

Subaru arrived back from the trip to Kyoto tired. It was nothing new to feel, but he felt joy seeing the kitten purring at his feet. "Kazumi!" He exclaimed picking up the furball and hugging it close.

"I'm sorry I'm back so late," Subaru apologized, opening up a cabinet and bringing out a small laser pointer. His cat enthusiastically chases it around. Apology seemingly accepted. He could not help but take a quick picture. It was a habit of sending one to Hokuto and Kamui.

The new sense of brightness in his life didn't go unnoticed.

Hokuto often mentioned he had a glow about him. And an added tease Kamui being the source.

"Oh! You know I've heard intimacy can be excellent for your skin. So….. have you two?!" Hokuto held a mischievous glint in her eyes.

Subaru froze, eyes wide open and jaw dropped. His heart thundered in his chest. He had to be burning as red as the coat his sister made him. "It's nothing like that!"

"What-" Hokuto held a hand to her chest, gasping in mock surprise. Truly she hadn't expected her precious twin to be intimate with anyone so soon. But he was so reactive when it came to Kamui. "You two haven't even kissed?"

Those conversations followed up throughout the weeks. Subaru's mind reeling, they were just….close. That's all.

There was no way someone as wonderful as Kamui could see him otherwise anyway.

On a job with an elderly client, Subaru wrapped up another long tiring day. Yet, his usual exhaustion couldn't extinguish the light inside, he felt rather light.

An elderly woman, whose longing husband finally left for the afterlife, insisted on giving Subaru proper tea and treats, in thanks for all his help.

Absently, unlocking his phone he was brought to the sight of his wallpaper. An image of a smiling Kamui holding his jealous kitten at the park. His mind wandered, a helpless smile on his lips as he scrolled through the latest photos he had taken.

"Ah, to be so young and in love," his client commented quietly, She entered with a whole pot of tea, pouring into the ceramic cups.

"What do you mean?" Subaru closed his phone as though hiding evidence. He could feel heat radiating to his ears.

"Those must be photos of someone special," She comments lightly, seemingly bemused by the pink blossoming on the friend's face.

"Ah, I have taken a lot of pictures of my new kitten and…." Kamui. Not that he could voice all that to an essential stranger. He cleared his throat, bowing his head before accepting the tea.

"Oh, is that so?" The elderly woman smiled. "I used to have quite the energetic kitten myself…." She began reminiscing, eventually leading into Subaru sharing pictures of his cat. The older woman beamed eyes at the frequent guest who made an appearance in the cat's photos, understanding right away.

"I'm back Kazumi," Subaru announced through the doorway, happily lifting up the kitten pawing at his legs. He heard the slight beeping sound following the kitty into the hallway. He happily hobbled up the food depositing into the bowl.

"I'm glad I bought this, not that I don't appreciate Hokuto but I don't want her to overwork herself…" Subaru thought this out, petting the kitten's head.

As though on her cue, Hokuto popped her head into the hallway room. She deemed it fine and preferred to respond to the picture message in person. "I got your text," she motioned, grinning from ear to ear. "I'm glad to see you're back early so we can have dinner together." She had already decided to clap her hands together.

"Mrrrow"

Upon hearing the squeaky meow, Hokuto happily leaned down to the cat's level, petting his fluffy head. "Hello to you too," she greeted, busting herself in the kitchen. Kazumi purred happily following his 'auntie' into the kitchen.

Being well nourished and after a long work week Subaru found himself collapsing on the bed. He hadn't realized he even fell asleep, not with the feeling of paws at his face and incoming sunlight greeting the day.

Subaru woke up feeling a bit drowsy. He began his morning by taking a picture of little Kazumi, as usual sending it to his sister and Kamui.

The young kitten was energetic as ever pulling his owner all around, picking out favorite toys, and leading towards the harness.

Walking such a small and well-behaved kitten garnered attention on the way over. Walking through the familiar park and rushing after every bird he'd come across, pouncing on his way.

"You're certainly energetic," Subaru laughed, feeling his energy slipping as the feline dragged him in loops, searching endlessly to begin the game of chasing after and failing to grasp a single bird in the park.

Subaru suppressed a yawn, his life had more balance and yet he found his mind going dizzy. He found himself feeling lighter, trying harder and giving it his all knowing the support he'd get each time he saw Kamui at his work or came home to his affectionate kitten.

Perhaps…he'd gotten too into doing his 'best', and fell into his bad sleep habits or lack thereof. He winced holding his head, feeling a harsh ache coming over him.

"Meow?" Squeaked little Kazumi, staring up at his owner with worry.

"Ah, Kazumi are you worried for me? Please don't be...I'll be fine," Subaru forced on a smile, ignoring his need to rest in favor of keeping his little furball happy. He'd neglected his health worse.

As his vision became more blurred, his movements slowed, and his head ached. His movements swayed, becoming off balance.

"Meow!" Kazumi shrieked upon seeing his sweet, worn-out owner begin to slow before coming to an unexpected stop. The feline rushed circles around his beloved owner in a frenzy, sniffing around him, before peering close to his paled face.

Half awake, Subaru reached out a hand to his kitten. His eyes blinked slowly, each time opening them made the world seem blurrier. Apologetically, he calls to the affectionate kitten. "Sorry, Kazumi…I just need…a little rest." Those last words fell from his lips as he collapsed further into unconsciousness.

The kitten looked on worriedly with big, quivering eyes. He pawed at her owner's face, sniffing around him, biting on his clothes as though to drag Subaru with it. It was to no avail, such a little ball of fluff could barely lift its toys up, let alone a person.

The lack of response left him worried, mewling, and crying out, only to find the park empty.

Reluctantly the kitten left his owner's side. Pacing around the park, and to the end he noticed a familiar shop not far away. More importantly, a familiar person stepped outside the door, seemingly heading out. While this person did take attention from his precious owner, he knew he needed to get help, lest Subaru's health worsen.

Giving it his everything, little Kazumi rushed over, spotting Kamui. He ran as fast as his little legs could take him."Meoooooow~" He let out a very noticeable yelp, seeming in panic.

"Kazumi?" Kamui raised his eyes seeing the cat in such a frantic kind of state. It mewled and cried loudly, pawing harshly at the young man's pants before hurriedly tugging him by the sleeve of his shirt.

"W-What's wrong?" Kamui asked despite knowing he wouldn't get an understandable answer. Those big cat eyes stared, unblinking at Kamui, before the kitten meowed, and ran back toward the park. He turned his little head back to ensure Kamui was coming. "You want me to follow you?"

He had already into the kitten's demands and followed him further into the nearby park. Thankfully, the journey was not far at all. Kamui finally understood as they came to a stop. Deep violet eyes rose in a panic, as they took in the sight of a familiar gentle hearted man collapsed by a tree.

"Subaru!" Kamui yelped, hands gently moving, consoling him. He leaned in close, hearing the soft calm breathing. "He's asleep" he spoke in relief, bringing the older man with him to a nearby bench.

Using the strength in his slender yet toned arms, Kamui knelt down, wrapping Subaru's arm around his shoulder, and doing the same. Gradually, he stood up, carrying the older male and all but dragging him to a better rest spot. Kamui was strong, especially for his size, but the problem came with the older man's taller and larger figure looming over him. Determination lit in Kamui's eyes he would manage.

The next sight greeting Subaru felt like something from a dream. Narrowed eyebrows, long dark lashes, and violet orbs took over his senses. Soft fingers playing through his dark hair and a trembling pout on gorgeous pale lips, this close left Subaru in a daze. Was he still dreaming? Surrounded by the warmth he looked up, resting on Kamui's thighs, head pillowed in his soft lap.

"Mnnn…" Subaru quietly started, something this nice had to be too good to be true. He almost closed his eyes again, falling back into this "dram" but it was too late. The hands combing through his hair came to a pause. Relief flooded violet-blue orbs as a tender voice spoke so sweetly, "Oh, Thank goodness you're awake."

Subaru felt his chest throbbing, knowing not even the sweetest of dreams could imitate such a tender, angelic voice he realized this had to be real! He blinked several times, hurriedly sitting up. Hands clasped over his shoulders with worry.

"Subaru! Hey, be careful!" Kamui exclaimed with deep worry forming lines near his temples. "Don't sit up so suddenly." Carefully, he clasped hands upon both of Subaru's shoulders before pulling into his chest.

"Wh-what happened…?" Subaru spoke, mind slightly dizzy, this time feeling differently than one of pure fatigue.

"Well…Kazumi is the one who found me. I'm not sure how but he led me over to you. Kamui explained the gist of it all, being sure to add. "I was worried sick seeing you collapse like that! I wasn't even sure if you were breathing, you were so still! And to find you were asleep I- You're lucky I found you so soon!"

"Oh, right…Kazumi…" Subaru leaned up seeing the kitten bundled up in a circle by the edge of the bench.

Subaru bows his head down, murmuring a weak apology. A sense of further guilt came from that bit of happiness knowing that Kaamui had cared to this extent. "I am lucky to have you here…"

With the pitiable apologies, puppy dog eyes gazing up at him, and unexpectedly affectionate retort, Kamui's frustrations could only ease.

Caring for Subaru was most important now. Subaru blushed a deep red, realizing he was still huddled up against Kamui. He sat back up as discreetly as possible. "Thank you for helping me. I'm feeling fine now. I haven't rested.

"Are you certain you don't want to go to the doctor?"

Kamui asked, eyes quivering. He had been holding either Subaru's arm or hand all this time.

The younger man's persistence is far from unwanted. Subaru much preferred to have Kamui this close to him in a setting far from a hospital. He'd been through enough to know when he'd be alright.

"There's no need to feel a lot better after getting rest," Subaru promises to the best of his ability. He still felt a bit drained but nothing like earlier.

"Have you been overdoing it, Subaru?" Kamui brings his attention back to him. Seeming so effortless.

"Ah, well…I…haven't been working as much as I used to but….I may have overbooked myself the last week." Subaru abashedly admits rubbing at the back of his neck. "But I'll manage myself better and the clients next week should be less so…"

"I understand," Kamui exclaims, turning seriously to his friend. He leaned in exceptionally close, his decision made, Gazing directly into deep emerald eyes. Both their cheeks are growing warm. "I'll come stay with you until your workload eases up!"

"Wait…you'll what," Subaru loses his composure, heartbeat racing, mind flustering. Near immediately, he pictures, life beside this beautiful young man. But…no he still wasn't dreaming right? "W-w-what are you saying"

"Ah well…" Kamui's pinkened cheeks and demure glances were not helping Subaru's fantasies. "You'll only overwork yourself again if I leave you alone." He huffed, eyes lowering with trepidation. "Plus Kazumi may have been here and able to find me today. But if you collapse again…who knows what could happen you might not be so lucky…and get even worse and I can't just…" he shakes his head rapidly, taking Subaru's hand into his own.

The last bits of sanity were slipping, Subaru had to find reason in this sudden announcement…before he got swept away.

"Still, I could never impose on you like that you've helped so much already," Subaru insists on this brushing the side of his cheek. He finds both his hands grasped tightly, made to look into determined eyes.

"Subaru. You must know I'm only here today because you saved my life!" Kamui proclaims boldly, not looking away for a moment. This idea seems far from a joke. His cheeks blossomed new shades of red entrancing emerald eyes. "I always hoped one day I'd be able to repay your kindness…"

"Kamui…" Subaru feels himself going breathless.

"And besides you're so busy this day. I doubt even having all your sisters help Kazumi isn't feeling lonely without attention."

Subaru felt the strike at his chest. He couldn't deny that. Even rearranging his work schedule and gaining such help from his twin…he couldn't guarantee Kazumi wasn't left with far too much time alone.

"So, You see, Subaru. You can rely on me!" Kamui exclaimed and really who could say no to dazzling eyes?

"Yeah but…Living together is…I mean I'm not against the idea itself but still…" Subaru tried to explain his mind unhelpfully. He couldn't help the images conjured of a domestic life with Kamui at home. He pictures them playing with the kitten, spending time together just watching TV, cooking together, or more so Kamui and Hokuto spending time in the kitchen together…maybe even seeing Kamui wearing one of those cute aprons to keep his clothes clean and- Subaru shook head quickly dismissing the thoughts…fantasies. "I don't see what benefit it would be for you…"

Aside from returning a favor, for his apparent time saving a cat in his past life…which Subaru swore hadn't even been him.

"For starters, you live a lot closer to my job than I do!" Kamui happily supplied, squeezing the hands in his own.

'I've never seen Kamui so insistent…' Subaru thought, feeling the motion of little paws pressing against his legs. He picked up little Kazumi, who stared at the joined pair of hands incriminate before coming to what seemed like acceptance. He glanced up at Kamui, purring softly. "Mrow!" And rubbed his head on Kamui's hand.

"And you can leave taking Kazumi out on walks to me!" Kamui exclaimed happily holding the kitty.

"Okay then…" Subaru relented, nervous, where to even begin explaining this to Hokuto. He earned an adorable Meow and cheered in unison at the exclamation.

It had only been the start of Kamui staying over to help. But now even at work, Subaru's mood lightened further. His family and clients seem to sense such a thing.

"You seem to be in quite a good mood," Subaru heard from a familiar client.

"Ah, is that so?"

"Mhm you've been a big help to me and my family for ages now," Spoke the young daughter of a prominent family in Tokyo, seeing the onmyouji off. She kindly added on. "I hope you're not overworking yourself."

"Thank you for your concern. Subaru shook his head. "I've had a lot ot changes and learned that overworking myself causes harm not only to myself. So I've been working on coming home…somewhat more regularly." The best he could manage with his profession.

"Then I won't keep you any longer," She ensures with a polite bow. Clearly, sensing this gift young onmyouji had something special to return to.

Subaru returns the notion bowing his head. "Thank you, Please take care of yourself and your grandparents." The source of her family's influence in Tokyo as well as the cause of many poltergeists.

Feeling a sense of accomplishment he contently turns the knob of the door, eager to be back.

"Hey…I am back," Subaru's voices turned the lock expecting and so used to be greeted by a usual soft mewl or perhaps, Hokuto's cheerful greeting. But he hadn't prepared for this.

"Welcome home," Kamui sweetly greeted him at the door, clothes covered with an adorable violet apron only making those ethereal eyes shine more brightly. That had to be Hokuto's doing, finding that exact match in tone.

Kamui's pink plush lips curved to a private smile, eyelashes fluttering slowly, his arms cuddling and all too spoiled kitten. The sight kept making Subaru's heart race in a way that made him fear it would try to break free, gifting itself to stay with Kamui.

Being greeted at home by Kamui…having someone waiting for him, in such a manner…Brought a sense of completion, an overwhelming bliss that's indescribable. He clutched at his chest, the throbbing and beating going hard to the point it was painful. Yet, all the same felt like the best pain to ever happen to him.

"I'm home," Subaru returns warmly, feeling the way his heart skips, gazing at a tiny black kitten, before turning to meet a pair of violet eyes. His two kittens.
