The darkness enveloped him long ago, and though some is his own doing and some was done to him, he knows it makes no real difference because the dark side has swallowed him whole, engulfed his body, taken him down and created Kylo Ren around him - Ben Solo cannot be allowed to rise to the surface even for a second.
And then he meets her, and everything changes, for in the darkness, she is the light, the only spark to light a flame to show the way up, the way out, the way back to what he ought to be.
Rey as in sunshine, as in the moon and stars, all possible sources and reflections of light, the very embodiment of the light side and, finally, she can look at him not with contempt, but with hope, and Ben knows, finally, he knows, that he can be saved, so long as he has her hand to reach for, her light to guide him home.
