Everyone looked at the gate spreading in Eddie's trailer.
"You think we can still climb through?" Steve asked, looking at Dustin.
Dustin just nodded, silent tears slipping down his face.
It had taken a while to pry Dustin away from Eddie's body, Dustin screaming the whole time.
"Guess I'm the guinea pig." Robin repeated, getting a boost from Steve, grabbing the edges of the gate, pulling through.
With a loud oof, Robin was back on the mattress.
Once Robin found more sheets to make another rope, she threw it through.
Dustin went first, careful of his ankle. Once he was through Robin helped him to the couch.
Nancy went next, this time with no trouble.
Steve was last, taking a quick look around before climbing through.
After fixing up Dustin's leg, the four climbed back into the RV, heading toward the Creel House, preparing for the worst.
On the way there, Dustin cleared the tension in the air by quietly saying that Max didn't die, because otherwise the upside down would fully morph into the real world. It just opened up into the real world, which meant, well he didn't really know what that meant.
It took some time to get to the Creel House, with the gates in the road and the authorities blasting their sirens, speeding in all different directions.
When they came close to their destination, they saw that an ambulance was coming from the Creel House.
They all exchanged worried glances but pressed forward.
When they got there, they saw Erica and Lucas, but no Max.
Oh no.
Erica was shaking, her knees and hand scraped, and Lucas was sitting on the steps head in hands, tears running down his face.
Erica looked up when they parked at the curb and started running to them.
She was sobbing by then, and she threw herself into Steve, nearly knocking him over.
"They wouldn't let us go in the ambulance." she cried into his muffle shirt.
While the older teens comforted the crying girl, Dustin limped up to Lucas.
"Hey," he whispered.
"Hey"
"What happened to your face?" Dustin asked, getting a good look at his bruised face.
"What happened to your leg?" Lucas asked, noticing the limp.
Both didn't want to talk about the last 3 hours.
But they had to talk about it.
"Everything was going according to plan," Lucas whispered. "Until Jason showed up, looking for Eddie, starting a fight. He broke her Walkman."
Dustin sucked in a breath.
"She started floating, then her arms and legs began to break. She fell, and she had blood coming out of her eyes. She- she-"
Dustin put a hand on Lucas's shoulder and took a deep breath.
"Eddie's dead."
Lucas whipped his head to look at him.
"The bats were surrounding us, we were going to climb through the gate, I was already through. Eddie was about to climb but he stopped and cut the rope. He ran out distracting the bats and they attacked him. I had to crawl through the gate, and I landed on my leg funny. I didn't make it in time. He was already getting attacked by the time I got there."
"I'm sorry." Lucas whispered.
"Me too." Dustin whispered.
They sat in silence for a few minutes, before Steve approached them, telling them they should head to the hospital to check on Max.
They all climbed in the RV praying for good news.
Steve took charge when they arrived at the hospital.
He guided them towards the front desk, saying that they WERE family of Max, and that Lucas and Erica were "extended family."
They all waited for the doctor.
It took a while, since a lot of people got hurt during the earthquake.
Finally, the doctor called, "Maxine Mayfield's family."
Everyone leaped out of their seats, speed walking to the doctor.
The doctor got straight to the point.
"Max is in a coma."
"What?"
"She died for a full minute, but then, her heart started up again. It really is a miracle. You can visit her now."
The group was led down a white walled hallway, each of them holding their breaths.
When they entered the room, Max was lying in a hospital bed, pale as a ghost.
"Oh gosh," Lucas breathed out.
They all looked at each other solemnly.
"It'll be ok," Steve assured them. "We'll get through this, together."
And somehow, they did.
