Chapter 11
Bonnie was enjoying her drink while Matt regaled her with his outrageous tales of his summer gig as a drag queen in New Orleans. Bonnie couldn't remember when the last time she laughed so freely and genuinely with anyone other than Care.
Bonnie hadn't spoken to Matt in a really long time and it was nice to catch up with him. As he moved around efficiently and animatedly filling drink orders, Bonnie noticed he gave off a flowery scent that was different from his cologne, it was faint and very pleasant.
Matt stopped in front of her to fill her glass up again when his face contorted as if he was going to be sick. Bonnie stiffened on cue now sensing a presence advancing upon her.
Bonnie instinctively knew it was Elena, but made no move to acknowledge her. Matt finished pouring the bourbon, rolled his eyes and moved off, but close enough to hear the upcoming conversation as he busied himself.
Bonnie gulped down her bourbon, but played with the glass, moving it in a circular motion on the edge of its base. The bar area had filled out with a few more people, but the two seats on either side of Bonnie were vacant so on her right side Elena stood silent staring at her wanting her to acknowledge her, but Bonnie refused to be goaded into speaking first.
Matt walked over with a frown, "I see hell is giving day-passes, since obviously there's no water down in the ninth circle where you reside, I assume you are here wanting a drink and not to just torture the innocent," he quipped.
"Hell isn't good enough for the likes of you, you morally bankrupt miscreant. Poor Vicki having to claim you as family." Elena snapped with faux pity.
"Ohh...I'm so wounded," he replied sarcastically, placing his hand over his heart with a frown, then smirked, "Do you even know how to spell miscreant, Elena? Probably not, m.i.s.c.r.e.a.n.t...anyways, I would rather be morally bankrupt than emotionally retarded and with no fashion sense and a flat ass." He retorted as he winked at Bonnie, motioning as if he dropped a mic and walked away with a smile on his face.
Elena's face looked like she had a mouth of lemons. She wanted to say something, but decided that she had bigger fish to fry and she didn't have a clever reply, so she directed her attention back to Bonnie and spoke first. "Jeremy's not here if you were hoping he would be."
"And why would you think I was looking for Jeremy?" Bonnie asked nonchalantly, slowly turning to face Elena.
"Well the outfit, the hair, the makeup," she used her hand to illustrate her point as she spoke, "It all screams desperation and a need for attention. I mean, let's face it, Bonnie, we all know you have never been one for high maintenance."
"And you would know about desperation and the need for attention," Bonnie effortlessly deadpanned. A hint of a smile graced her lips as she witnessed shock morph into anger on the surface of Elena's countenance.
Indignant, Elena shifted on her feet,"You have really changed Bonnie and not for the better. But I guess it is understandable." Elena remarked snarkily.
Bonnie refused to be baited, "Elena, what do you want?"
"I want an apology from you," she said.
Bonnie chortled, "An apology? For what?" She asked mockingly, waiting for clarification to such an asinine response.
"Really Bonnie, you don't know what for?" Elena looked incredulous. "First off you walked by purposely ignoring Damon and I, after seeing us, which was rude. More importantly you stranded Jeremy in New Orleans with no money and all by himself. He needed to call me to ask for money to get home. Then you keyed his truck, something I would expect from Caroline. And beyond all that you treated my brother shabbily when all he tried to do was love you," Elena counted off using her fingers.
Bonnie's jade eyes turned cold as glaciers as she stared into brown eyes, "And that is what your precious brother told you?" She asked with a smirk on her face.
Elena was momentarily dumbfounded by the dark beauty of Bonnie's face and the coldness of her eyes. For a moment Elena was taken aback by a feeling of uneasiness. She stammered, " Y...yes he did. Don't try to deny it Bonnie."
Bonnie chuckled, "Elena you are a clueless idiot. Jeremy could tell you the sky is green and you would believe it. I just don't get it, but let me clue you in on a few things, first, I was n't aware of your presence here, but if I was I doubt I would have stopped to talk to you. Second, he stayed in New Orleans because he chose to stay there instead of coming home with me, so he wasn't stranded."
Bonnie continued, "Third, I gave him enough money for his continued stay and bought the return ticket for him, so he didn't need the money. He just suckered your ass. Fourth, he's been fucking Anna behind my back so I would say it is he that has been treating me shabbily. Did he tell you that?"
Bonnie wasn't in the mood for Elena's shit and she could feel her anger rising thinking about Jeremy. She studied her face and it suddenly hit her, "You knew. You fucking two-faced, hypocritical bitch, you knew all along," Bonnie shook her head, "...of course you did." Bonnie just chuckled, turned away from Elena then motioned for Matt for another drink.
Although Elena was shocked to discover that Jeremy lied, she was more shocked at the way Bonnie was talking to her and the way she just ended the conversation, dismissing her. She didn't like it and a small part of her was hurt and that hurt fueled her anger.
Elena grabbed the back of the barstool that Bonnie was sitting on and turned it so that Bonnie was now facing her. Elena got into her personal space and proceeded to vomit her anger from her mouth, revealing all her secret thoughts and feelings she kept hidden for so long.
"So are you admitting that you did key his truck?" She asked heatedly.
"To be completely honest with you, he deserved it." Bonnie alluded, but in her head, he deserved to be carved up like a turkey, was loud and clear. She knew now that she did key his truck and wished she did more.
"Since we are being honest and laying it all out on the table, you should know I never thought you were good enough for Jeremy. To be even more blunt and completely honest, I only tolerated you all these years because I felt sorry for you."
"Little Bonnie Bennett always too scared to speak up for herself. Little shy bookworm with big glasses, Walmart clothes and kinky hair. Always wanting to fit in, but you never could, you could never be one of us."
Bonnie just stared at Elena, seeing, really seeing all the things that she had never wanted to see or acknowledge. She had always felt that she needed Elena, needed her friendship, needed the scraps she threw her way.
Matt was standing in front of them, having heard what Elena said, he stood still not knowing what to expect from Bonnie, thinking he should say something, hoping that she wouldn't take Elena's shit. During this time, Damon had decided that Elena was taking too long, so he walked over to the two women in enough time to hear the end of Elena's revelations and Bonnie's response.
"Elena, I loved you," she said softly. "I always knew who you were but I defended you, turned a blind eye to all your questionable actions and there wasn't anything I would not have done for you. But know this, I am done with you and Jeremy and anyone that dares to ally themselves with you." She looked at Damon then returned her attention back to the girl in front of her. "You are nothing to me. I suggest you walk away."
Matt looked gobsmacked while Damon squinted his eyes looking at Bonnie with a slight new found respect for her since he never thought she would ever...could ever talk to Elena that way, even though he didn't like the look in her eyes.
"And what did you know about me," Elena sarcastically asked, putting her hands on her hips, straightening up a bit.
"I always knew you were a selfish, narcissistic spoiled little girl with mean tendencies when she couldn't get her way." Bonnie offered with a bored acceptance of a truth she finally embraced.
"You...I...I can't believe you Bonnie. Everything I did for you. I can't believe I ever tried to be your friend. Weak little Bonnie..."
Bonnie glared at the girl she had grown up with, interrupting her "Be careful what you say next Elena," she warned, neither girl concerned by the heads turning to gawk at them due to raised voices.
"Elena c'mon, this isn't the time or the place," he said touching her elbow.
"Fuck that! This is the time. Long overdue I would say." She replied without turning to him, yanking her elbow from him. "All these years I suffered you. I had to stomach being around you. You aren't right, never have been. No wonder your dad always ditched you and your mom killed herself and why your grandmother had to beg people to allow their kids to be your friend."
Elena was on a roll not realizing that her voice was loud and people were now openly staring at them, listening. She also didn't notice that Bonnie was standing now with her fists clenched. "Your whole family is strange and everyone knows it. Everyone talks about you and your grandmother behind your backs. You think you are special but you're not!"
"You should listen to Damon and walk away Elena because I am not in the mood for your bullshit." Bonnie hissed.
Elena stared back at Bonnie trying not to back down but there was something in her eyes that made her feel cold inside. "Fine, I said what I needed to say. No reason to waste my time any more," she said as she flipped her hair, "Just don't think that you can come running back to my brother. He won't be going back to that," she said as she looked up and down at Bonnie with pure disdain and loathing that was sprinkled with envy.
Bonnie just rolled her eyes, nonplussed with Elena and her attempts to hurt her.
For good measure Elena added as she and Damon were turning to walk away, "He's done with you. Keep that crazy guard bitch you call a best friend on a tight leash and away from us." Under her breath Elena whispered, "Fatherless fucking skank."
Bonnie heard her, "What did you just say Elena? Too chicken shit to say it out loud," she mockingly questioned.
Elena stopped, surprised that she heard, without facing Bonnie she announced, "I said fatherless skank. I guess it's true what they say...birds of a feather and all." Elena smirked, continuing to walk away.
Bonnie reached for her drink, gulped down the last of her bourbon and soundly placed the glass down on the bar. She allowed the fiery liquid to burn her insides as Damon and Elena walked away.
All eyes and ears were fixated and attuned to the scene. Matt had secretly taken out his phone and was stealthily recording the encounter. Others were trying to act like they were busy eating and still others were blatantly watching to see what would happen next.
During this time Klaus had walked in now following the scent he recognized as being Bonnie, although it was sweeter and stronger. He had gone there hoping maybe she might be there, but mostly it was to get a famous and overly talked about hamburger with fries.
One of Mystic Falls' claims to fame was the Grille's delicious burgers, he figured he would try it instead of having to hunt, hopefully killing two birds with one stone, as it were. As he entered from another door on the opposite side of the restaurant, her scent hit and overwhelmed him. He moved purposefully, following her trail.
He stood in the shadows, not wanting her to sense him yet, not getting too close but just close enough to intervene if need be. He listened just like everyone else, yet he was unconcerned with the content and more so of her state of being. She could be unpredictable and that could be a costly mistake.
"If memory serves me correctly, you are also fatherless, oh, and motherless, maybe you forgot. But enlighten me, Elena, is she a fatherless skank because she beat your ass for tricking Tyler into fucking you? Or is it because you were so desperate to have Tyler that you faked being pregnant, claiming he was the father and it was Care that found out that you weren't even pregnant?"
Bonnie stopped right in front of Elena looking her up and down trying to figure out how she ever could have thought of this pathetic girl as her friend, how she could have ever begged for her friendship.
"Caroline is the sunlight you wish you could be, the glitter of gold to your tarnished brass, you are beneath her like shit on a boot. And no matter what you say about me, I promise you that if you utter another fucking word about Caroline or even think to have her name come out your mouth, you will regret it."
"Hey, I'm gonna need you to back up off her now, okay. No need to be throwing out meaningless threats Bon Bon," Damon said not liking the way she was talking to his girl.
"Really, Damon, rushing in to save the day...huh? Who do you think you are? Her hero? That's a laugh and the name is fucking Bonnie, not Bon Bon, not judgy...Bonnie." At this point Bonnie was seeing red.
Damon looked at her with amusement, he had to say...he liked this Bonnie. He mockingly bowed with his hand on his heart, "Forgive me...Bonnie," he said with a grin.
"You really think you are so charming and cute, but really you are just a pale imitation of the better Salvatore brother. By the way, where is Stefan, he couldn't stomach the two of you together." Damon's grin turned into a grimace.
"You are the consolation prize. The fucking runner up." Bonnie smiled a evil grin, "Tell me...do you really think its you she's thinking about when she's fucking you? Because I'm pretty sure it's Stefan."
The bar and dining area immediately got quiet as shock and disbelief registered on the faces of some and amusement on others, especially the locals. Elena looked like she had a mouth full of lemons while rage rolled off of Damon. Her taunts hit a nerve, like a wound that never fully healed but scabbed over. This intrusive picking made Damon ready to pounce on Bonnie.
No one had ever heard Bonnie speak the way she was speaking and carrying herself the way she was carrying herself. She stood straight and she spoke with confidence and venom dripped from her words. She was a different Bonnie. Oh, but if they only knew the truth of their thoughts.
"You fucking bitch," Damon said as he moved closer to Elena as if trying to shield her, squaring his shoulders, standing tall, looking down at Bonnie trying to intimidate her. "What the fuck would you know about it? You let that idiot Jeremy leech off of you, all the while he's fucking Anna and anyone else he can while telling us how frigid you are. I believe he called you a dead fuck and gullible." Damon spat as he was seething within.
Bonnie chuckled and in a condescending voice she questioned, "Is that the best you can do Damon?" She smiled, " Because I'm not fucking impressed. Clearly you are all talk and no action," she scoffed then directed her gaze to Elena, "Is that why you are so ready to open your legs to any guy that will give you that attention you so crave?" She tilted her head and tapped her chin, " He doesn't have the equipment to back up all his talk, huh? Not giving it to you nasty like you want it?" she mocked them.
She returned her gaze to Damon, "I told your girl," she laughed as she said the word, 'girl', "That I wasn't in the mood and now I'm telling you, back the fuck up and get out of my face if you want to keep it pretty." Bonnie snared, she could hear the rush of blood following in the veins of everyone around her, she could smell the different scents causing her stomach to rumble. Before her eyes she saw red, she licked her lips.
Bonnie was itching for a fight. She took a step closer to Damon, he was befuddled, he had never seen or heard Bonnie act or talk the way she was and it not only turned him on, it also startled him. Where had this Bonnie been all this time, he wondered.
As Damon and Bonnie squared off, staring at each other, Elena couldn't hold back any longer, "You fucking black cunt," she hissed as she lifted her hand to slap Bonnie, but another hand grabbed it before it could make contact and then released it as if it was diseased.
