Chapter 15
"As the pregnancy progressed certain cravings and habits seemed weird but we rolled with it. I wanted red meat, bloody and cooked rare, which was not what I normally ate. I would sleepwalk and not remember. And the dreams, they were the worst, dreams of death and war. She would talk to me, call to me. The Fae Queen would instruct me in long dead rituals. I would be consumed with learning more and more. That is when the insomnia started and I would stay up, days at a time, reading, immersing myself in their world."
Bonnie listened as she checked certain boxes off in her head, as if she was calculating, unraveling the great secrets of life and in a way she was.
She had never seen her grandmother eat red meat, only fish or chicken, now she understood why. But Bonnie was astute and as the veil was falling away, she sat waiting for the truth that she knew was coming.
Sheila watched Bonnie, it was like witnessing the night become day, as the sun rose and the rays of light began to change the sky increasingly light as streaks of purple, orange and red bring evidence of the approaching day. In Bonnie's face the proof of her awakening was evident and Sheila, for one brief moment, was frightened.
Nervously she continued, "My classes were less approved material, but more ravings from my new tutelage and the students were dry sponges soaking it all in. But as my nights became more strained and dominated by the Queen, my relationship, which had been wonderful, was turning sour as Greg urged me to get help, but I would refuse his pleas."
"In my last trimester I was placed on bedrest and given sleeping aids that were safe for the baby, it was either that or they would force admit me into the hospital, with Greg's approval, of course." Sheila let a slight shiver run across her body as she thought of how Greg was his own worst enemy, thinking he had all the answers.
"I was furious, but I had to acquiesce. I felt betrayed, he felt helpless, there were too many secrets and more to come. This was the beginning of our end."
"A month before I was due, the Fae Queen visited me for the last time in my dreams."
…
The room was quiet and dark, Sheila slept peacefully in the large king bed while the man she loved, now slept in the guest room. He said it was because she needed the rest, but Sheila knew that he was hiding, retreating from her; there was a huge chasm between them and it was only getting larger. She knew it was her own fault but it was the price she had to pay; the price she willingly paid.
A soft breeze caressed her skin, waking her up, opening her eyes, Sheila saw a figure standing at the foot of her bed. Her heart raced, but she knew who it was, she just didn't know why. Usually the Queen visited her in dreams, using Morpheus' realm to communicate with her.
Sheila sat up as best she could with the huge belly in the way. The Fae Queen moved closer and helped her by propping the pillows behind her back.
Moving back, the Queen gently said, "Do not fear child. The time has come. I am here to bring you the great tidings that I have planned for you."
The room seemed to slightly illuminate so that Sheila could see the figure clearly. She stood tall and proud, her massive wings curled in front of her to cover her nakedness. Her wild platinum tresses seemed to dance as if she was standing in the eye of a hurricane.
"Sheila, you are my finest acolyte. You have spread my teachings to a new people and generation, a people not of my own but still just as loyal and eager to follow me. Thank you."
Sheila didn't know what to say so she just stayed quiet. Watching this force of nature, beautiful and terrible in equal measure.
"I knew you would be the one to accept my precious gift. Your sheer will to have what you craved called to me. Many women have come to me, and still do, seeking, longing, wanting from me. Willing to suck at my teat for their desires, but are weak in spirit. Their desires are little more than children's tantrums. Their sense of entitlement is stronger than their fierceness, but you my sweetling, you commanded justice, you provoked action."
"Your need spoke to me, to mine and I knew that we were kindred, that it would be you that brought that which I have sought for so long."
Frightened, Sheila asked, "What might that be?" She feared that her child would be taken from her. The fae Queen smiled reading her thoughts, "No, a promise is a promise and a gift is a gift not to be taken back. No, the babe is yours, but the seed she will bear is my own."
Sheila's eyes widened, "What?" She cradled her stomach, feeling the squirming child, kicking, making its presence known.
"Yes, the child will bring forth my seed, blessed by my fallen King. And when that child comes forth, blood, death and vengeance will reign down on our enemies."
The Fae Queens eyes glowed bright emerald with rage and her wings flapped.
"How?" Sheila dared to question.
"The price for your gift. My lifeforce, my magic aided in the child being conceived and carried. Your womb was barren and dry. The seed could not take root and grow, but my magic made the ground fertile, allowing the seed to be planted and thrive. My essence contains the child and has while the child has grown and developed. Therefore my essence is part of the child just as much, if not more so as you and your husband's DNA and genetics. Yet there is a special part in the child that will not activate until much later, a spark, if you will. Will be contained in the reproductive organs of the child. And that spark is When the child reaches maturity the magic will surface."
"Once the offspring of your child is conceived it will receive partial inheritance of magic and after the birth it will receive the rest. Your grandchild will be different, special and have all the power to rule and reign over Fae and mankind alike."
"Listen, since you are here in this place I will create a new home for my heir here. My people will settle here to make ready. The Tree of Life will grow anew, here in this new world. The enemies of our people are filthy parasites, spreading across the world corrupting everything they touch. They seek to end the Fae, but they will fail."
"Two have already been called and are being prepared for the heir to come; a protector and a mate. The many species of Fae have been waiting for the heir and the war to come."
"The child will come soon, your human doctors are wrong about the gestation time and the slight acceleration of growth has not been noticed. The way will be difficult, the pain exquisite, but just breathe, allow the natural flow of life and magic to guide you. Remember you are the most favored."
Sheila was shocked. So much information was served to her, but there was one question she had to ask. "Why?" The why her, the why now, the why to everything that Sheila could not articulate or fathom. She was lost to the will and destiny of another and although she was frightened she was also excited because this was her purpose, whether planned or not.
"They destroyed my lover, my King. They thought to end me, to take my power, to rule my kind. The Order sits complacent in their victory, yet they wait for their doom. Back then, I just wanted a child with my King, they took that from me. I could have no other King, he was my one true mate. They robbed me of my right, now I want total oblivion and my seed will bring that beautiful chaos."
"Now rest," she whispered as she moved in closer to Sheila and touched her forehead, causing her to fall into a peaceful slumber. "There is always a price to pay, my sweet," the Queen whispered as she lovingly looked down at Sheila. What the Fae Queen didn't tell Sheila is that the price for the child that she craved would be everything and anything that got in the way of what the Fae Queen desired. In time Sheila would learn this sad fact.
…
"I went into labor two days later. The doctors told us it was too soon, they tried everything they could to prevent me from giving birth, but to no avail. The time had come and I tried to be ready."
"When Abigail was born, I was frightened and relieved to see her. I didn't know what I would see, Greg smiled down on me with such loving eyes, tears streaming, thanking me for such a beautiful gift."
"She was amazing. She was a normal, lovely baby. I would get stopped on the street by random people to compliment her beauty all the time and as she grew the more beautiful she got."
"Things seemed to return to normal, no dreams, no weird cravings, no tension… and no Fae Queen. It was almost as if I had dreamed it all up… almost. Abby was her father's little girl. He doted on her every whim and she was the apple of his eye." Sheila stopped to wipe a tear from her eye and steady her voice.
"As things tend to do, old habits settled in and Greg started working more, seeing me less, but he was always attentive and doting to Abby. He loved her with all his heart and she loved him. However, she only tolerated me, it was almost as if she knew what I had done and what her ultimate purpose was or maybe it was the price I had to pay, to have this lovely child, that I had desperately wanted and she didn't want me. I am sure that there was love, but her love for me was perfunctory, only due to me being her mother. She barely let me touch her."
"As she got older, behavioral problems started, intermittently. Around the age of four she would have fits and rages, only to be calmed by Greg. Greg would say she was acting out because she wanted attention and affection from me. He had no idea."
"He coddled her saying it was my fault, that I didn't love on her enough. The truth was that she recoiled from my touch. And I soon stopped trying. It was so bad that we had to get a nanny, but I came to terms with it and even welcomed it because it gave me more time to learn and to teach."
"Soon the evidence of the fading words of the Queen became reality as different families began migrating to Mystic Falls, including Druids and worshippers of other non-traditional religions. Then came the supernaturals, the Fae-folk, all sorts of species and categories. But not just Fae but other supernaturals that faded into human society with ease.
"By the time Abby was thirteen our relationship was all but a horrible joke. She regarded Greg as her only parent and he allowed it, of course by this time he was sleeping with one of his co-workers and we had all but separated, but lived in the same house. It was at this point when Abby's mental state seemed to decline. I knew it had to be the Fae magic or maybe even the Queen talking to her, but Greg took her to doctors who put her on medications."
"This was not good, it was interfering with the Queen's plans, but I had no way to prevent what was happening since I was effectively locked out of her life, that was of course until Greg died."
" He had been over to the house gathering more of their belongings, carrying on about leaving Mystic Falls, saying that this place was no good for Abby and he had divorce papers written up that he wanted me to sign. I told him not to do this, not take her away." Sheila shuttered as she remembered the hurt and anger she felt at his words, but it was the fear that had her begging him to reconsider his actions. Not fear for her safety, but for his. She had no idea what the Fae Queen would do to him, if he took their child from her.
"I would gladly divorce him but he had to keep Abby here. I pleaded. He laughed, told me I was crazy just like everyone said and walked out the door. That was the last time I saw him…alive that is. The next time I saw him he was on a metal slab."
Sheila paused, with shaking hands she wiped a stray tear from her eye. No need to cry now, she thought, the worst was yet to come, so she continued.
"The cause of death was ruled as cardiac arrest…heart failure. But I knew the truth of what happened and why. Somehow, deep down inside so did Abby. She placed the blame of his death solely in my hands, and in retrospect I guess it was true."
"It was a very hard road and it only got worse as Abby matured into a lovely woman."
"She finished school and promptly left home…a house that she no longer was a prisoner to, in her own words. I let her go, I knew that she wouldn't be gone for long."
"She came back two years later a wild child out of control with appetites that she had no money to indulge in. Drinking, smoking, drugs and partying was her life. I knew she was trying to drown out the call in her blood, the need to be what she was supposed to be. This destructive behavior lasted for a year until she met your father."
Sheila paused to take a sip of her drink, suddenly her mouth was very parched. "They met at the grille where she worked briefly. He was a few years older, well educated and from a well-to-do family. She was drawn to him and this was the turning point to our relationship. She would talk to me about him and ask for advice. And he was a calming force for her. The next three years were amazing, Abby cleaned her life up with Rudy's help, our relationship finally seemed like a healthy mother-daughter relationship and Abby was happy. Theygot married in a small lovely ceremony with a few friends, Liz Forbes and the Donavans, being counted among them. Everything was really wonderful and the years passed, so they were ready and very excited to have a baby, so they started trying."
"I was so nervous and worried, but I stayed silent. Really it was selfishness, things had been perfect and I didn't want to ruin it, plus what was I going to say?"
Bonnie took the opportunity to ask a question as Sheila paused to take a sip of her now watered-down drink.
"Did they really want me or was it the Fae Queen's meddling?" Bonnie's eyes were pensive as she watched every movement of Sheila's face.
"That is a complicated question," Sheila answered honestly. "Your parents loved each other, I mean at this time there was no doubt about their love for each other, and having a baby was the next evolution of their lives, however their marriage was doomed to fail, I think."
"Why is that? What aren't you telling me?" Bonnie's voice became elevated. Sheila reached for her hand to comfort her but she snatched it away and quickly rose from the chair.
"You have been telling us this long drawn out story, but you aren't telling me why you didn't tell me? Why would you hide all of this from me if you were chosen for this purpose? Tell me what you are hiding," Bonnie yelled, eyes glowing as her anger, frustration and trepidation started seeping out of her as she glared at her grandmother. Klaus quickly rose to take her hand, "Love, calm down and let her finish," he proposed, squeezing her hand lightly to bring her down.
Bonnie relaxed as she smiled at her lover, then after taking a few breaths, she sat down again, facing her grandmother. "Grams, I am sorry for yelling, but I know that you aren't telling me something very important. Please continue."
A/N: Sorry to end here but this was getting too long and I wanted to upload today. The next chapter is up shortly. It will be the end of exposition and things are about to wrap up for our lovelies. Thank you and Please and Review, that really helps to push me.
