Max looked up to the sunny sky and watched as a flock of birds flew past.

It was nearing the end of May, two weeks before the end of the school year.

Lucas and Max were on a date, one of many since spring break.

They decided to have a picnic this time, on the hill that Dustin and Suzie talked. It was a long walk, but it was worth it.

"So, how's school going for you?" Lucas asked, munching on some watermelon they had packed.

Max had been falling behind during the year but after spring break, Max had many amazing tutors. Aka Dustin, Mike, Will, and Lucas. As well as Nancy and Robin occasionally.

"Pretty well," Max responded, sipping some Coke. "I got the C in History up to a B, so now all of my grades are higher than a B."

"Congrats!" Lucas said, a huge grin on his face. "We knew you could do it!"

"Thanks," Max tried to hide the smile on her face, to act as if it wasn't a big deal.

But it was. After spring break, Max worked really hard to cope with everything, to try and get her life back together.

Lucas cleared his throat.

"Uh," he started.

"Uh?" Max questioned.

"So, summer's coming up," he continued "That means Fourth of July is coming up as well."

Max froze.

She could feel anxiousness well up inside her.

"We were all wondering," Lucas kept going. "What you wanted to do that day, since we figured you wouldn't really want to watch the fireworks. Robin and Steve don't really want too either. The others are hesitant, but willing to do whatever."

Max felt the anxiousness turn to anger.

Why'd the Party want to find out what she wanted to do, when all of them had been affected that day. Yes, her stepbrother had died but still, everyone had something that happened that affected them.

"I don't care." she stated simply.

Lucas stared at her for a moment, then said, "Are you sure? Cause as said before everyone's up for anything."

"It's fine."

"Really?"

"Yes!" Max practically shouted. "Yes, it's fine. I don't care what we do!"

Lucas looked taken aback and for some reason, that made Max more annoyed.

She huffed and stood up, grabbing a Coke for the road and stomped down the hill.

"Where are you going?" Lucas called after her.

"Home!"

"Do you want to meet up later?"

Max turned around, stopping halfway down the hill.

"I don't think that's such a good idea. In fact, I think it would be better if we just don't meet up again."

Lucas looked shocked, "You're dumping me?"

Max simply rolled her eyes and continued her journey down the hills.

When Max reached the road, she grabbed her skateboard that was stashed under Lucas's bike and skated off the direction of her house.

Max raced down the road with a scowl on her face. She couldn't believe Lucas.

Max didn't think the whole ordeal was a huge deal, but she soon would realize that was not the case.

It had been two weeks.

Two weeks since Max had dumped Lucas.

Everyone knew about it but danced around the subject.

Max had obviously seen Lucas over the two weeks, which was a fun perk of being in the same friend group. They didn't exactly talk to each other, but it was awkward when they did.

It was when Lucas started to skip the scheduling tutor sessions and started to send Mike or Dustin was when Max started to worry.

She started worrying so much, she skated down to the cabin to talk to El.

"I need your help." Max stated once both girls were in El's bedroom. "Lucas hasn't tried to talk to me."

El stared at her.

"What?"

"Did you ever think that there was a reason for that?"

Max was confused. "Why do you mean?"

"Max, for as long as we were friends you've dumped Lucas left and right. Every time he came back for you. Lucas is a great guy. Don't you think he deserves a relationship where he doesn't have to worry about being dumped every month? A relationship that he doesn't have to worry about saying a simple thing that could be the end of it? Max, the whole dumping thing was cute when we were 13 but did you ever realize that dumping Lucas all the time might lead him to never come back?"

Max was shocked.

"Wow El. I didn't you know you had a poetic side." she joked.

"Max." El didn't laugh, face staying neutral.

Max groaned.

"What do I do?" she asked, slamming her face into a pillow.

"Maybe it's time you asked for him back, to show that you care." El suggested.

Max pulled her face from the pillow and thought for a moment.

"That might work."

"Then go!" El pushed out her out of her room.

"Thanks, El. Still, didn't know you had a poetic side."

"Oh, haha." El said, ending the conversation and close the front door.

Max sighed. She had a boyfriend to make up with.

Max clambered up the front steps of the Sinclair's house.

She rang the doorbell and saw a figure moving toward the door.

And there was Lucas.

He stood frozen for a moment.

"Hey," Max cut the silence.

"Hey, Max." Lucas said, still confused.

"I'd like to say I'm sorry." Max started. "I acted horribly, and I never really thought of the way it could hurt you, I just, I don't know. You know I'm bad at feelings."

Lucas said nothing, so Max kept going.

"It's just whenever there's a problem, I immediatley run away. And even if there isn't a problem, I act like a jerk. I don't know why. Maybe cause I can't express my feelings or something like that. But, I'm sorry and I would like to try again. And if we try again, I promise I will try harder."

Max was panting at the end of her speech.

Lucas kept standing there for a moment, then wrapped Max into a hug.

"Thank you." he whispered.

"For what?" It was Max's turn to be confused.

"For your apology. It means a lot."

They pulled apart and Lucas tells her, "We have to work on telling me what you are thinking though."

"I know," Max said. "I know. And I will work on it. It won't be perfect, but I'll try."

"Good." Lucas smiles.

"Starting with Fourth of July." Max decided. "I think I want to watch some fireworks but not all of them. Do you think we could play some games and watch movies in the Wheeler's basement and go out and watch some fireworks when we want to?"

"Yeah," Lucas told her. "I think the Party would be okay with that."

"And if not, we can work around it." Max declares. "I- I also want to visit Billy. With just you."

"Are you sure?"

"Positive."

Lucas smiles.

The couple stayed on the porch for a while.

They definitely did not kiss.

AN: Hope you liked it, KyrptonianHero! Writing the breakup was a little hard because she had to get upset over something that wasn't really worth getting upset over and that was hard to think of something, but I think I did pretty well! Happy December! Requests are open!
