40- The Double Date

Summary: Mike, El, Lucas, and Max decide to go on a double date. This is how it goes.

Requested by: Boris Yeltsin

It started as a joke.

And of course, Dustin started it.

It was a Saturday and the Party headed over to Family Video.

They all walked up and down the aisles, browsing through the movies.

Dustin picked up one, recognizing the title. He flipped it over and read the description.

"Hey, they double date in this one." Dustin called out, remembering the scene.

Lucas glanced over at the movie. "Oh, yeah." he recalled. "I remember that."

"Wouldn't it be funny if you, Max, Mike, and El double dated?" Dustin asked.

Max snorted. "What would we even do?"

"Whatever you do on a date, but with them." Dustin pointed out the obvious.

Max was about to say something when Will, who was on the other side of the store, ran up to them.

"They finally have that new movie we were looking for." he told them.

Lucas and Dustin high fived him and Max rolled her eyes.

What a stupid thought Dustin had, them double dating?

No way.

But as the weeks went by, they'd start talking a lot more about it and soon it became reality instead of fantasy.

Mike, El, Lucas, and Max were going on a double date.

This was going to be interesting.

It was a Friday night and El was getting ready for her double date.

It had confused her at first, making her think, 'so I'm dating Max and Lucas now?' but Mike explained it to her, and it all made sense.

The two couples were going to Benny's Burgers and a late-night movie.

Everyone was meeting at the park, the only place where they all had same amount of time to walk.

El hurried through the woods, making sure her legs and arms weren't getting scratched in the May sun.

She saw a road through the trees and there was a familiar redhead walking down the road.

El walked through the trees and started up the ditch when twig snapped underneath her foot and Max jumped.

Max started to gain color in her face again when she realized that it was El.

"Holy crap, El! You scared me!" Max explained, placing her hands on her knees trying to calm her breathing.

"Sorry Max. I didn't mean to scare you." El stated, feeling bad for her best friend.

"It's okay. I know you didn't." Max told her, taking a deep breath. "Are you ready for our double date?"

El nodded. "I'm excited about the movie."

"What was it about again?"

"Something about fighter pilots." El said, remembering about what Mike told her.

"That'll be cool to watch." Max said, continuing down the road.

The two best friends walked in a comfortable silence until they made it to the park.

They saw the boys, who walked together which made sense, giving that they lived so close to each other.

"Hey guys." Lucas greeted them.

Max and El acknowledged the two boys.

"Alright, we ready to go?" Mike asked.

The two couples started walking in the direction of Benny's Burgers.

Show time.

Lucas laughed so hard; Coke almost shot out of his nose.

This was fun.

The two couples were sitting at a booth, eating some burgers and fries while sipping soda.

"So, how's school going for you guys?" El asked, planning to start going to school with them the next fall.

Max groaned. "There's so much homework."

"But" Lucas cut in, side hugging his girlfriend. "She's doing really well."

Mike nodded in agreement. Max gave a small smile to both of them.

"That's good to hear." El said, munching on some fries.

Lucas glanced at his watch.

"We probably should leave in the next 20 minutes or so." he said. "The movie's gonna start soon."

They all nodded. "How's track going?" El asked.

After basketball season ended, Lucas decided to try out for track.

"It's been going good. I've been able to beat my personal record every few times" Lucas told the table, unable to contain his smile.

"That's great!" Mike exclaimed, the others were trying to be a little more encouraging when it came to Lucas and sports.

Lucas grinned even more.

"When's your next meet again?" Max asked him.

"Next Saturday. Then I have one more until the state championship." Lucas replied.

"Are you going to win?" El asked.

Lucas smiled at her, El still didn't totally understand the reasoning of sports.

"We're going to try. We have some pretty good guys on the team."

"Oh!" Max exclaimed suddenly. "I forgot to tell you guys. My mom finally became coherent enough to sign the papers."

Steve had been trying to get Max to move in with him when he realized that Susan wasn't the best mother in the world. Max was upset at first but came around to the idea.

The only thing was the paperwork.

"That's great!" Mike congratulated her.

El gave Max a high five while Lucas gave her a side hug.

Lucas checked his watch again and declared that it was time to go.

They had a movie to go watch.

Max flopped back against her bed.

It had been a great night.

She wasn't sure why they hadn't done this before.

"Anyone there?" a staticky voice called out.

Max turned and grabbed her radio.

"Hey, El." Max said into her radio. "What's up?"

"You're supposed to say over." another voice piped up.

"Blah blah." one more voice that belonged to Mike, added in. "Like everyone's planning on doing that."

"I just wanted to say that I had a fun night." El told them.

"Yeah, that was actually really fun." Max realized.

"The movie was awesome!" Mike cut in.

"Oh, the best." Lucas agreed.

"The-" El started, trying to remember the word. "What was the word again?"

"Stunts." Mike told her.

"Oh yeah, the stunts were really cool."

Max nodded her head, even though no one could see her.

"So, you're going to double date again?!" an excited voice cried out.

"DUSTIN!"
