Hopper squints due to the California sun.
How did the Byers live out here for 8 months?
It was hot.
Like, hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk.
Luckily, they weren't staying for good. They were just here to pack up their stuff.
El had been jumpy and Will had been unusually quiet ever since they drove past the 'Welcome to California' sign.
Which was understandable.
El had told Hopper about what had happened in California one night when they both couldn't sleep.
She told him about Angela.
What she had done.
What El had done.
Hopper could tell when El told him that she went to jail for hitting a girl in the face with a roller skate that she was scared that he would be angry.
He wasn't.
Well, a little.
But mostly, he was proud.
And humored.
Take the kids powers away and she'll find a way to strike back twice as hard.
Hopper sighed as he pulled up to the school that El, Will, and Johnathan attended during the 8 months.
Joyce wanted to go, but she had to make sure the move was in order.
So, she tasked Hopper with the job.
Hopper walked up to the front desk.
"Hi there," the lady working it said. "How can I help you?"
" Hi, I'm transferring my kids back to their old school, so I need paperwork for that and their grades and all that stuff." Hopper told her, leaning on the counter.
"Okay, just tell me the names of you kids and I'll grab that for you." the lady said sweetly.
"Johnathan Byers, Will Byers, and E- Jane Hopper." Hopper listed off, brushing off the mistake he made with El's name.
"Alright just wait right here and I'll go get that for you." the lady replied, hurrying off towards the back of the offices.
"Thank you." Hopper called after her.
Hopper kept leaning against the counter, glancing around at the school El attended.
"So, the snitch finally decided to leave, huh?" a snotty voice whispered loudly.
"Yes! Finally!" another one whispered, not doing well at keeping their voice down.
"She'll finally get out of your hair Angela."
Hopper froze.
Angela. That was the name of the girl who bullied El.
Hopper tried to take some deep breaths, knowing he should try not lash out.
But that didn't mean he shouldn't confront Angela.
"Excuse me." he said, putting on the happiest look he could muster. "Did you say your name was Angela?"
There was a blond girl who just stared at him for a moment.
"Yeah, why?" she finally asked.
"Oh, my daughter has just mentioned you."
It wasn't a lie.
Angela smirked.
"And who's your daughter?"
"Jane, Jane Hopper."
Angela's eyes widened, then she burst out laughing.
"Jane's dad is dead, dude." a boy behind Angela said.
"Well, he was." Hopper's happy smile slid off his face. "But I'm back now."
Angela looked at him questioningly.
"No, her dad is definitely dead." a girl behind Angela told her.
"Nope. And I'm here to tell you that if you ever say a mean thing to my daughter again, you'll be in for it."
Angela's mouth parted slightly in surprise.
"I never did anything!" she shouted in protest. "She's the one who gave me a broken nose that took weeks to heal!"
"Well, you don't want that to happen twice, do you?" Hopper asked. "If you don't, don't touch my daughter again."
Angela's eyes filled with full on fear as she nodded her head wildly.
"Good."
Hopper turned to walk away but stopped.
"Oh, and Angela?" Hopper said. "Just stop the bullying all together, it's a bad look."
And with that Hopper turned away with a smile on his face, leaving 4 shocked teenagers in the hall.
Oh, it was good to be alive.
