Chapter 5: Realisations
The sensation of something crawling on his face caused Izuku to wake up. Head spinning, he looked up to see trees and a bushy tail. Blinking twice, he slowly sat up and a squirrel scurried away.
Where was he?
Wait a moment…
Who was he?
Izuku Midoriya…that was his name…as far as he could remember…but that was all he could remember. Feeling a sensation in his pocket he rummaged around a pulled out a pair of goggles, the lenses a dark mossy green. Where did they come from? Why were they the only thing he had on him?
He couldn't sit and dwell in this forest of all places, he had to find the closest city. He could think while on the move. Suppressing the fogginess in his mind, he stood up and started to walk. Ok. What could he recollect? The first word that came to his head. Quirks. He could remember that 80% of the population had one. Did he have one? Surely, he must. The chances of not having one were extremely slim right? So, what was his quirk? He could remember his name but not his quirk? Shaking his head at that dead-end trail of thought, he shifted to whom he could contact. Family? Relatives? Friends? No, zero recollection of any of that as well. His home? Where was it? Again, no recollection.
The complete void in his memory terrified Izuku and his body moved on autopilot for the next several hours. Once he finally exited the forest, he saw the entrance to a large city with a brightly lit sign. Looking up, Izuku saw the sign that read 'Welcome to Jaku City.' So, he was in the Kyoto Prefecture.
Huh.
So, he could remember locations… Interesting…
Walking through the streets of the city, Izuku found an alleyway, where he sat down and rested his head against the wall before releasing a deep sigh. What was he going to do now? No phone, no contacts, no memories. He was literally a nobody. Reaching back into his pocket, he pulled out the goggles again. For some reason holding them gave him a form of comfort, yet he didn't know why. He decided to slip them on, having them rest on his forehead when suddenly, he heard a scream coming from the main street.
"SOMEONE! CALL A HERO!" Cried a feminine voice.
Hero…
The word resonated with Izuku. Reaching up to touch the goggles, a thought flashed into his head.
I can be a hero.
Before he knew what he was doing, his body moved on its own and he rushed out of the alleyway.
Approaching the main street, Izuku was shocked by what he saw. A deer-like creature, around six feet tall with three eyes and towering horns that branched off into razor-sharp points. The creature let out a roar to reveal uncharacteristic canines before putting its head down and charging at a parked car, flipping it over. As the civilians scattered, Izuku spotted a woman who had tripped over, cowering in fear. The creature also noticed her and stalked towards her rearing on its hind legs and prepared to stomp on her.
Izuku burst forward, putting himself in between the woman and the creature and stretched his arms forward. As it brought its weight down, Izuku's outstretched palms made contact with the creature's ribcage and suddenly Izuku saw a flash in his vision
To Izuku, it felt as if time had frozen. It felt as if he was connected to the creature. It felt as if he could command its very essence.
STOP
A mental vision flashed, the sight of glowing yellow microscopic machines deactivating and then entering his own body before turning green. When he looked up, he saw that the monstrous creature had vanished and in its place was a relatively normal-looking adolescent deer that proceeded to trot off away from the scene, completely oblivious to the damage around.
Izuku stood there in shock. Had he really done that? What exactly did he just do?
Collecting his thoughts, Izuku turned to check to see if the woman was ok.
"Are you ok miss?"
The woman, still cowering on the ground with wide eyes slowly nodded her head. Before Izuku could breathe a sigh of release, a voice shouted out from behind him.
"You there! Don't move!"
Approaching the scene was the Pro Hero, Fourth Kind.
"Did you just use your quirk to stop that thing?" Fourth Kind barked at Izuku.
"I-I don't, I-I'm not sure-"
Izuku tried to answer but the pounding headache that had now set in resulted in him only being able to stammer incoherently. His hesitancy, however, only served to make Fourth Kind even sterner.
"Don't lie to me boy, illegal quirk usage in public is a serious offence, regardless of your intention!" Fourth Kind pressured him.
"H-hold on, he saved my life!" The woman cried out, "If it wasn't for that kid, I would be a goner!"
Fourth Kind turned to the woman and spoke with authority.
"I appreciate that miss, however, I cannot in good faith overlook illegal quirk usage. The laws are in place for a reason. If we bend the rules for one individual, then where would we draw the line? Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to have to ask you to report to my sidekick, he will tend to you and take your statement."
The woman's protest died and all she could do was cast a sympathetic look at Izuku before heading over to Fourth Kind's sidekick to give her recollection of event. Fourth Kind turned his attention back to Izuku.
"Have you got anybody I can contact boy?" He asked.
"N-no, I don't," Izuku said meekly.
Fourth kind looked at him sceptically.
"No family or anything?" he asked, voice shifting to a more concerned tone.
"No," came Izuku's reply.
Fourth Kind furrowed his brow before crossing his pair of lower limbs. "Then, I'm going to have to ask you to come with me to the police station," he said.
Izuku looked down dejectedly.
"Yes sir," he said defeatedly, the headache preventing him from conjuring any form of protest.
Izuku was ushered into a police car and driven to the police station. Once there, he was escorted to an interrogation room. The police officer ordered Izuku to take a seat and wait for the interrogation officer. After 10 minutes, an interrogation officer walked into the room carrying a file of papers. He sat down and prepared to start jotting down notes.
"Ok, kid let's get this started, first of all, what's your name?" he said tiredly.
"Izuku Midoriya."
"Age?"
"14 years old."
"Home address?"
"I don't know."
This caused the officer to look up and raise an eyebrow.
"You don't know?" The officer
"No sir, I can't remember much."
"You don't remember much? Are you telling me you're suffering from amnesia?" The officer asked incredulously.
"Yes sir, honestly all I remember is my name and age, I don't even know what my quirk is or how I used it. All I know is that I wanted to protect that woman from getting hurt." Izuku answered honestly.
The officer studied Izuku's face before putting down his pen. The amnesia was problematic if true, however, judging by the state that he was currently in, it was unlikely the child in front of him was lying. Additionally, the statement from the woman at the scene did align with what he was saying as a genuine effort to help. Despite this, he could not just overlook blatant vigilantism.
The officer sighed and looked directly at Izuku in the eyes before speaking, "I'll cut to the chase kid. You know that illegal quirk usage in public is a serious crime, right? It's not something I can just let slide easily."
Izuku nodded wordlessly.
The officer continued, "I would be willing to let you off with a warning as you did manage to help someone, and no one was injured in the process. However, given the circumstances and the fact that you have no memories, and no one to call to pick you up, I simply can't just let you out of here."
Izuku looked down dejectedly. This was literally the last place he wanted to be. He just wanted to get out of this room and go somewhere, anywhere, where he could gather his thoughts in peace.
The officer sighed and stood up, moving towards the exit. He looked back to Izuku and tried to give him a form of reassurance.
"Just sit tight kid. I'll be back soon after I discuss with my superiors how we're going to proceed with you moving forward."
Izuku didn't look up but made a small nodding motion, and with that, the officer pressed a few buttons next to the door and left the room, the doors locking electronically behind him. Izuku sighed before staring at the door. All he could ask for was a shred of luck to somehow get him out of this room.
Just as the thought this, a buzzing sensation in the back of his head caused him to perk up. He looked towards the door, specifically at the control pad that controlled the opening and closing feature and the buzzing intensified. Izuku stood up. walked over to the entrance of the interrogation room, staring at the control pad.
It was almost as if he had the urge to speak to the technology.
Izuku closed his eyes and raised a palm towards the unit beside the door. He envisioned one simple command.
OPEN
There was the flash, the same flash from when he had stopped the creature in the city, only this time, there was the mental sight of the microscopic machines glowing green before their light intensified. When Izuku opened his eyes, he was dumbfounded. On his palm and snaking up his forearm was a glowing green circuitry design, a bright green light was shining from his palm, and, within a few seconds, it died down and the door popped open just as he had commanded it to.
Looking left and right in the hallway, Izuku saw that it was vacant. He couldn't just leave, could he?
Screw it. At this point, what did he have to lose?
Izuku bolted down the hallway, taking care to peek his head when going around corners and climbing downstairs to make sure there was no one present. He continued this process until he spotted an emergency fire exit. Pushing down on the heavy metal bar, the large metal door creaked open and Izuku sprinted out, down another flight of metal stairs and onto the street below. Successfully out of the police station, Izuku breathed a sigh of relief before immediately realising that he would have to vacate Jaku City as soon as possible or risk being seen and caught by the heroes or police again.
So, no memories and now he was on the run? Great. Oh well. These were the cards he was dealt with. Time to make do. Fixing the goggles on his head once more Izuku thought back to the words that had flashed through his head before he rushed out to save the woman.
I can be a hero.
Saving that woman had just felt…Right…Like it was something he had always wanted to do…Something he was destined to do.
Looking down at his hands while he walked, Izuku was in deep thought. Evidently, he had a quirk, but the specifics of it were unclear to him. So far, he could cure mutant deer and open doors.
Not much correlation.
The lack of logic frustrated him, and he felt the urge to find a notebook to write all of this information down, but for now, his priority was getting out of Jaku City. Making sure he kept a low profile, Izuku walked briskly to the train station. He was about to plan a journey when he came to a realisation at the barriers to the platform.
He didn't have any money. How could he even get a train ticket?
Releasing another sigh, Izuku scratched his head in frustration before a thought popped into his mind. If he could speak to technology to open the doors at the police station…then surely the barriers would respond as well?
Worth a shot.
Izuku walked hesitantly over to the barriers, and, once he made sure no one was looking, he discreetly raised his palm to the side of the barrier. A green glow emitted and the glowing circuitry appeared on his palm once more.
Sure enough, the barriers responded, and they opened, allowing Izuku to step onto the platform. As he boarded the train, Izuku noticed an advertisement playing on a screen.
'U.A University Sports Festival commences next week! See our students and the heroes of the future Go Beyond, Plus Ultra!'
U.A University? So, if he wanted to become a hero, that was the route he should aim for? Interesting.
Well…It was a university so he still had 4 years before he would have that opportunity, but he would log that in the back of his mind for later. As the train left the platform, Izuku's eyes became heavy as he started to drift to sleep. The events of today weighed heavily on him. As he dozed off, he heard the robotic voice of the train announcer.
"Next stop, Hosu City, we will be arriving in 3 hours"
A three-hour nap would do him some good.
Several miles outside of Jaku City, two men emerged from the forest to the site of the wreckage caused by the huge explosion. The first was an imposing man in a business suit. On the man's head was a large imposing metal mask that also served as a breathing apparatus. The second was a short slightly overweight bald man with a bushy moustache, wearing a peculiar set of goggles.
"I assume this is the location, Doctor?" The question came from the masked man, his voice as imposing as his appearance.
"Yes sir, an incredible surge of energy originated from here just this morning," replied the doctor while adjusting his goggles.
"Hmmm…if those creatures that we encountered on the journey through the forest are any indication, this event, was far more than just a simple explosion," theorized the masked man as he surveyed the scene of the wreckage.
A weak cough came from underneath a rock, interrupting their conversation.
Turning his attention to the rock where the sound originated from, the man in the business suit pointed his hand forward and two black and red tendrils extended from his index and middle fingers, moving the rock aside with surprising care and dexterity.
There they spotted another man, his black hair singed, his white lab coat charred and bloodied, and his face marred by burns. His most noticeable injury, however, was the absence of his left arm as all that remained was a cauterised stump just below his shoulder.
The man was in terrible condition, but somehow, he was alive.
Curiously, the man used an invisible force to levitate the injured man's body towards him and he tilted his head.
"Just what do we have here Doctor? A Survivor?" As he asked this, it was almost possible to hear the man smirk behind the mask.
"That…Seems to be the case, sir…But considering the magnitude of the explosion and the degree of those injuries, that shouldn't be possible!" The doctor exclaimed, utterly confused by how a man could survive the calamity.
"Well…It seems as if today is just full of surprises… We will be transporting him along with us…I'm sure he can be of use to me…" Raising a hand to his ear, the man then spoke through an earpiece, "Kurogiri…Open a gate at once…"
"Of course, sir" came the reply before a shadowy portal opened and the body of the injured Kleito floated through it. Both the men proceeded to then step through before it closed behind them.
