Standing next to All Might for this lesson, Byleth can't help but be a bit nervous. Not over anything about the man next to her, but rather about the health and safety of her students (Yes, they're already hers). Today is her first day truly teaching in… quite a long time, and some of All Might's ideas about the lesson are worrying.
What worries Byleth the most about this exercise is the personalities of some of the students, and how they could spark something more than a simple training exercise.
Turning to All Might, Byleth questions in her unwavering monotone, "Are you certain about some of these… plans? They sound like a brawl waiting to erupt, especially with our more volatile students."
All Might lets out his signature laugh, "Of course, Ms. Eisner! I may not have your credentials when it comes to teaching, but I do remember what it is like to be taught! Experience is the best teacher of any, especially in terms of combat!"
Byleth holds in a sigh, "Yes, but usually you would lay a baseline first, show them some basics before throwing them into the line of fire, real or simulated. How did you learn, if not that way?"
As the question leaves Byleth's mouth, All Might goes completely still. Then he starts… shaking? Frankly, he looks terrified, and Byleth can't help but worry about him.
When All Might speaks, his voice is trembling as much as he is, "H-h-he beat the lessons into me! It was hell! That old man was ruthless!"
Before the conversation can continue, the students arrive and All Might instantly regains his composure. He gives a boisterous laugh and welcomes the students warmly.
"Now then, I'm sure many of you are excited to take your first steps toward real combat! However, first you must learn before you can do! I have with me today Ms. Eisner to help educate you in some of the basics before we attempt any simulations."
Nodding and stepping forward, Byleth addresses the students, "Hello again. As you heard, today we'll begin training you in combat basics, as well as providing tips on how to incorporate your Quirks into combat styles that we believe may be best suited for you. You can, of course, request changes or extra guidance in a particular direction if you believe that there is a style you are better suited to, but I request that you do give the recommended styles a chance before making any such decisions."
Looking over the students, Byleth takes a second to make sure they're all paying attention, "Now, before we move forward, are there any questions?"
A few hands go up, and Byleth plays a quick decision game in her head to pick one at random.
The selected student ends up being Ojiro, "What if we already have a form of training?"
Byleth nods, "An excellent question. While I am aware that some of you have already trained in a discipline of your choice, I still have some suggestions I'd like to give you. These are individualized, hoping to improve your combat proficiency in a manner wholly unique to yourself. Some of you could have already earned the title of master, but it is with techniques created and perfected by others. To truly be an unpredictable combatant, one who always maintains an edge on their opponents, you must always strive to learn, improve, and create techniques unique to yourself and your personal abilities."
All Might laughs boisterously, "Well said Ms. Eisner! While it is true that many Heroes, especially those that practice martial arts, have specified techniques that they always use, this can be a weakness. The smarter Villains, the ones who know their enemies, will observe these moves and devise countermeasures! To be able to overcome your foes, no matter the circumstance, you must be able to adapt! Brute strength is nothing without skillful technique behind it! I should know! And besides, there's yet to be a person who has seen all my Smashes!"
As the symbol of peace lets out another laugh, Byleth goes about answering the remaining questions. Eventually, she reaches Yaoyorozu Momo.
The dark haired girl asks, "When you mentioned specified combat styles, which particular ones did you have in mind?"
A smile almost touches Byleth's face as she pulls out a remote, "I'm glad you asked."
With the push of a button, a section of wall slides away to reveal practice weapons of all shapes and sizes. Staffs, swords, a few axes, gauntlets, and even a bow and quiver of arrows. Stepping over to the displayed weapons, Byleth grabs a sword and gives it a few test swings.
Turning to the students, she gestures to the display, "All Might will be going around and handing out training regimens I drafted for all of you which specify what weapon or weapons you will need. All of them were custom made to fit you specifically and are labeled with your name."
The students obtain their papers and all go up to the wall to obtain their new gear. Afterward, they're split up and directed to spaces around the room that have been set up specifically for their weapon type. However, some are left behind to stand in the center, those students being Yuuga Aoyama, Mina Ashido, Ochako Uraraka, Denki Kaminari, Kyouka Jiro, Momo Yaoyorozu, and Flayn.
Assuring those students that she'll return quickly, Byleth goes around and begins explaining basic concepts to the students already training, such as edge alignment to the sword users, how to aim a bow to Todoroki, etc.
Returning to the remaining students, Byleth pulls out a file and begins sorting through its contents. Quickly finding what she needs, Byleth passes papers to Aoyama, Ashido, Uraraka, Kaminari, and Jiro.
As the students look over the sheets, Byleth explains, "Those are support items I drafted with the intent of synergising with your Quirks better than any ordinary weapon I could bring you. I give these to you specifically because your Quirks make it more difficult to prepare training for a style that can use a regular weapon and your abilities simultaneously, so I've tried to make items that would work better with what you have. For Aoyama, a sword that runs on the energy his laser produces. For Ashido, gloves that can collect her acid safely and utilize it as a projectile. For Uraraka, extending gloves made with samples of her DNA to try and give her Quirk a farther reach. For Kaminari, a launcher that can mark targets to direct his electricity. And finally, for Jiro, a pair of guns that can pick up and fire out her sound waves to allow her to move while attacking from a distance. If these are to your liking then please bring them to the Support Course to be made and added to your costumes, but for now please follow All Might to begin basic hand-to-hand combat training."
As they leave, Byleth turns to Momo, "As for you, I'll be frank. I couldn't draft a proper regimen for you. Your abilities allow for too much variety for me to train you how I wish in a timely manner. So to make up for that, I've decided to ask you directly. What do you wish to focus on at the moment?"
Momo's eyes widen slightly, "You wish for my opinion on the matter? Well, I have a small amount of training with the staff, but I still wish to improve. Then there is the matter of using a shield alongside it, which I wish to learn as well."
Byleth nods, digging a paper out of her file and passing it to Momo, "Those are the measurements for weapons made for someone with your height and arm length, as well as the chemical composition of the material we use for practice weapons. If you'll go ahead and create your equipment, I'll start with the basics."
After Momo's situation is sorted, Byleth stores the file and turns to the only student left, Flayn. Looking around to make sure no one is watching, Byleth gives Flayn a small smile.
Lowering her voice, she speaks, "As for you Flayn, seeing as I've taught you before and that you have plenty of experience, I'm trusting your judgment on this matter."
Flayn giggles softly, "I am honored to have your trust professor. As for my preferred course of learning, I would like to improve upon my skill with the spear. Father has already taught me some, but I need more opportunities to practice and improve."
Byleth nods, "I thought as much. When I was getting the practice weapons made, Seteth asked that I include a spear for you."
Retrieving the weapon, Byleth gives it to Flayn and takes up a position opposite to her, settling into a fighting stance with the practice sword she picked up as all emotion melts away from her face. Flayn similarly settles into a ready stance, meeting her teacher's eyes with a fierce gaze. Unbeknownst to the two, the other students had stopped what they were doing to watch, and a few guests had even arrived, who are now also observing.
As if by an invisible signal, Byleth and Flayn simultaneously move forward toward their opponent, weapons already moving. Flayn gives a quick stab that Byleth easily parries, the teacher moving in along the length of the spear to execute a slash the Flayn barely avoids. From there, the dance continues, both participants of the spar either blocking or avoiding the attacks of the other and then retaliating in the same motion.
Seeing Flayn match her at this level, Byleth decides to pick up the pace. She begins attacking faster, with more frequency, and in harder ways to match. The longer the spar continues, the more Byleth steadily increases the difficulty, pushing her student to do better with each passing second.
Finally, Byleth reaches a point that Flayn can't keep up with, quickly dodging a strike before using the momentum to flow into a strike that knocks Flayn's spear out of her hands. Almost immediately afterward, the practice sword is at Flayn's throat and the spar is over.
Lowering her weapon, Byleth nods to her student, "Excellent, I can see Seteth has taught you well. There is little left for you to learn, all that remains now is further practice."
A voice from the side adds on, "I concur, your technique is progressing wonderfully Flayn."
Turning, Byleth sees that Seteth and Aizawa have joined them in the practice room.
All Might calls out from the back, "Ah! Aizawa, Mr. Drake! How great to see you joining us!"
Byleth has to do her best to maintain her composure upon hearing Seteth and Flayn's false surname again. She had already laughed when Seteth originally told her, much to his consternation, but she still finds it hilarious how on the nose it is.
Byleth retrieves Flayn's practice spear and returns it to her, directing the student to go practice by herself as she goes to speak with Seteth.
Seteth smiles warmly at her approach, "Ah, Byleth, I trust you are doing well?"
Byleth nods, "Indeed. I have to say, I wasn't quite expecting this first day to go so smoothly."
Seteth chuckles, "You are an excellent teacher Byleth, I'm sure that even if it had gone differently you could've handled it easily. Now, are you settling into the position well?"
Looking out over the students practicing, eager to learn, a small smile crosses Byleth's face, "Yes, I'm slowly coming to remember all of my habits from back then."
Turning to face Seteth, her smile grows slightly, "I think things are going to work out here."
A/N: Another chapter down, and Byleth being slightly more emotional in public. It isn't much, but it is better than nothing. Now then, I have other things to work on, so I'll see you around.
