To vi – Thank you for your review! I'm glad that you like the allowance idea, and that you enjoyed the graysonfam moments, and everyone's thoughts and emotions! I hope you like this chapter as well!
To Guest – 1. It will be a bit tense, but I don't think it will turn into a full-on shouting match. 2. I haven't really decided what I'm all going to do with Dawn yet. 3. Still working on that. 4. I haven't decided that just yet either. I have an overall plan for this story, but some details I still have to figure out. Hope you like this chapter!
AN – Hey everyone! I hope you all doing well! I am back at school, and this semester is a bit busier than my last semester, so there is a chance that I won't be able to keep up with my updates. I'll do my best, but just a heads up, updates might be later than normal. Hope you all can understand that. Now, onto the story! I hope you all like it!
Enjoy!
Still in his seat in the Batcave, Dick was growing more and more frustrated with every second that passed. He didn't understand why he couldn't figure this drug out. He knew there was something familiar about it, he just couldn't put his finger on it. If he could, than not only would he know how the drug was affecting Jason, but maybe he could figure out who Jason was working with. The second Robin could be very clever, when he actually stopped to think things through, but Dick doubted he could've done all of this by himself. At least, not this quickly. It took a lot of work, planning, money and connections to do everything he was doing. It wasn't something one could pull off in just three months.
Maybe he should take a break. He already had a break from these constant drug tests yesterday, when he shifted his focus to saving Hank's life, and when they all celebrated afterwards. He even got six hours of sleep last night, the most he's gotten since Bruce left. Another break this soon wouldn't help. It would just take him longer to find the answers he needed.
No, another break wouldn't help. What would help was a fresh set of eyes. Dick needed someone else to take a look, but he didn't know who. He felt bad that he didn't have anything for the team to do right now. When he originally called them and asked them to come to town to help him, he had no clue all of this was going to happen. He didn't call them simply to fight. But he didn't think they could help him with this. Dawn and Hank never really dealt with cases that had to do with actually studying drugs. That only happened when they were with the Titans, and he was the one who studied them, not the others. Kory had only been on Earth for about a year, so she wouldn't know, and while Conner was an extremely quick learner, he most likely wouldn't know. Gar might be able to help a little, having learned a bunch of medical stuff during his time with Chief, but he didn't know about the drugs Gotham's psychos used.
"Wait a minute," Dick mumbled to himself, squinting at the results. They almost looked like… But no. It couldn't be, could it?
Dick quickly pulled up the old records of Scarecrow's fear toxin and his eyes widened. "Oh no."
The detective quickly hacked into Arkham Asylum's security camera footage. Because of the criminals incarcerated there, it was mandatory that all footage was kept and stored. He sped through the last three months, and while there was no sign of Jason or Robin visiting Crane, there was a few hours of recorded footage missing from nine weeks ago. That was suspicious. So he took a look at Crane's phone call logs. There was an uptick in calls during those weeks, all from several numbers. A search of the numbers showed they all come from burner phones. They were turned off so he couldn't tracked them, but these numbers had been tagged by the Batcomputer. Bruce had bought these phones. He wouldn't have used these to speak with Crane. If he needed to talk to him, either as Bruce or Batman, he would have gone in person. That left only Jason. Jason, who had been left terrified and traumatized by Deathstroke, and who better to talk to than the expert of fear?
Needing to be 100 percent certain though, Dick pulled up the Batcave's security footage from nine weeks ago and there is was. As he watched Jason go through the drawer where Bruce kept his burners, Dick grabbed his own cell phone, whispering, "Gotcha."
"Barbara, it's Crane," Dick said as soon as he heard the phone being picked up, before Barbara could say anything.
"What?"
"Jason's working with Crane," Dick explained. "The drug Jason has been taking has some of the common elements with the basic fear toxin, and I found security footage showing Jason taking the burner phones that Bruce keeps. Those numbers are on the list of numbers that have been calling Crane for the last nine weeks."
"Crane's responsible for all this?" Barbara's voice was filled with shock.
"Yes. We need to isolate him. Maybe we can use him to get Jason," Dick suggested.
"Dick, someone tried to kill Crane a few hours ago. He's okay, wasn't hurt, but he's being moved from Arkham," the police commissioner revealed, and Dick felt his heart start pounding even faster than it already was.
"What? When?" He nearly shouted at her. Why hadn't he been told about this before? Crane had been, supposedly, helping them with their investigation into the Red Hood, which was not only police business, but Titans business. Shouldn't she have informed him when this happened?
"Any time now. Since he has been helping the GCPD, his protection order was rushed. So he's being transferred to a different facility, today," she told him.
"You need to stop it Barbara, it's a trick. He's planned this, I know it."
"What kind of trick?"
"I don't know, but I know that if he's controlling Jason, he could be controlling the gangs, which means he probably planned to be attacked in order to be transferred."
Dick could see it all in his head. An upset Jason going to Crane for help on conquering his fear, especially since Bruce made him stop being Robin because of it. In fact, Dick wouldn't at all be surprised if the day Bruce benched him was the day when Jason reached out to Crane. And Crane, not only being a psycho who wanted created death and chaos using fear, easily taking advantage of him and orchestrating all of this. Getting the criminal gangs to work for him, getting the money he needed to create more fear toxin, causing issues between the police and the Titans, and now, breaking out of Arkham. Dick didn't know how Jason's death and apparent resurrection occurred, but he could figure that part out later.
"You don't have any proof?" Barbara questioned, and Dick clenched his fist. She was always the kind of person who required proof before doing something, a good quality to have as a police commissioner, but this was now a road block.
"No, but Barbara, I'm right about this," Dick insisted. When she didn't respond, he asked, "Can you just, delay it until we know for sure?"
"I, I'll see what I can do, but I can't promise anything. The head of Arkham Asylum also has a big say in what happens. The transfer is supposed to happen in the next 20 minutes or so."
As soon as Dick heard that, he hung up the phone. There was no time to wait. Arkham Asylum's head, along with several of the workers there, were as corrupt as the police force. If they were in on it, there was no way they would delay the transfer. He, and the Titans, would have to stop it.
The original Robin ran up the stairs as fast as he could. There was no time to lose. As he searched through the kitchen, living room and the game room though, he found no one. Where did everyone go? He did kind of say that they could go off and do whatever they wanted, but he didn't really consider the possibility that they'd leave the Manor. As he headed upstairs towards the bedrooms, he pulled out his phone and tried calling Kory. No answer. He tried Dawn. No answer.
By that point, he had checked all the bedrooms, and they were all empty. It seemed that he was completely alone. Unless they were in the backyard or gardens. He made his way back down the stairs, now calling Hank and Gar, but they didn't pick up either. He was about to call Conner, when he spotted the clone outside, coming into the house with Krypto following right behind him.
"Conner!" Dick shouted as he rushed over to him. "Where are the others?"
"I don't know. I was taking Krypto for a walk, and he really wanted to explore the grounds. Why, what's going on?" Conner wondered, quickly seeing how distressed and anxious the Titans' leader was.
"I can't find anyone, and I have a lead on Jason, but we need to move now," Dick told him. Conner nodded and immediately followed his leader.
2018TITANS2018
Conner crouched down behind a bush outside of Arkham Asylum. He hadn't really heard of the place before he came to Gotham with the others, but what he had heard about it since, it didn't sound like a good place. How was this institution allowed to run? From what he could hear and see, this place should be shut down. It almost seemed like it would be better if the other patients were in a different mental hospital, that wasn't in Gotham, and that the criminals housed here were in an actual prison instead. Especially if the security was as bad as everyone said it was.
Right now, an armoured prison truck sat parked right by the back exit, waiting for the police officers to bringing Jonathan Crane out. Dick told him that he figured out that Crane was helping Jason, and that Jason was going to try and break him out, but he didn't really explain how he knew that, or why Jason was working with the well-known criminal. Since the transfer was happening right away, there was no time for questions. Once Dick gave Conner the limited amount of information, they ran down to the Cave so that Dick could get on his Nightwing suit and Conner could switch shirts. Then, they hopped on Dick's Nightwing motorcycle and came straight here.
"Are you sure that something is going to happen?" Conner asked through his commlink. They had sped over here as quickly as possible while also still trying to be sneaky, and when they arrived, Conner hid behind the bush while Dick went to hide up on the ledge attached to the second floor of the building. Roofs were Dick's go-to hiding spot when they were out on patrol or on missions. After all, hardly anyone looked up when examining their surroundings.
"If Jason is working for Crane, then this is the best time to break him out," Dick's voice echoed in Conner's ear.
"I kinda feel like we should have waited for the others," Conner said, frowning at the security guards and police officers. He had no way how this was going to go, and he wished that they had more people to help them in case something went wrong.
"They weren't in the Manor and wouldn't answer their phones. We had no time to wait," Dick reminded him.
The man had a point there. Conner had no clue where Kory, Gar, Dawn, and Hank had gone. The last time he had seen any of them was when he was playing video games with Gar and Hank. Then, Krypto wanted to go for a walk, so they went and explored the Manor grounds. It was crazy how large it was. He came across two ponds and a small stream, along with a mini forest that had a treehouse. It was like a mini park or something.
"So, is the plan just to keep an eye on the truck and make sure it reaches its destination?" The clone questioned, now seeing with his x-ray vision a group of men circled around another in chains making their way towards the door. "They're almost at the door by the way.
"Maybe," the detective answered. Through the commlink, Conner could hear a light ruffling noise as Dick shifted in his spot.
"Maybe?"
"I'm thinking that maybe we should grab Crane, interrogate him ourselves," Dick reluctantly responded. "Might be more honest with the Titans than the cops."
"But, are we allowed to do that?" Conner wondered, though he was pretty sure that he already knew the answer to his own question.
The half-alien got no response, which concerned him a little. He wasn't sure about how Dick had been acting lately. He was hyper-focused on this Red Hood case, more than Conner had ever seen him do on any case before. It made sense considering Jason's involvement, but Conner didn't like it. Dick was becoming more closed off, obsessive, and was now wanting to kidnap and apparently threaten someone? That didn't seem right.
Suddenly, loud gunshots filled the air, pulling Conner's attention back to the situation. Someone was shooting at the police officers and security guards, who were now ducking for cover. The police were pulling out their own weapons to fire back while the guards were trying to lead Crane back inside. Conner had been so lost in his thoughts that he didn't notice that they had come out.
"Sh*t. We gotta move," Dick ordered before leaping into action.
Using his x-ray vision, Conner looked for the guns that were firing, trying to figure out where they were coming from and how many people were surrounding them. The bullets were coming from at least five different directions. To his surprise though, it wasn't people that were shooting. It was just machine-like rifles that were mounted on parts of the building and nearby trees. It seemed like someone was controlling them remotely.
Conner instantly used his laser eyes to destroy the guns in the tree. That took care of three problems. The two mounted to the walls on the other hand would be a bit trickier. He didn't want to cause any damage that would lead to the weapons or parts of the wall falling and hitting someone. Deciding it would be better to take them down manually, he leaped into the air and ripped them down with his bare hands. It was a little tricky as the shooting was still going on. He got hit a couple of times, by both the mounted weapons and the police. It didn't hurt him at all, but it was still annoying. The police seemed to stop when they realized who he was though.
Once those guns were destroyed and tossed off to the side where no one was standing, Conner jumped back down to the ground to see what was going on now. Even though the controlled weapons were dealt with, people were still shooting. At this point, all of the security guards were down, as were most of the police officers. Conner ran over to try and help, but many of them were already dead, and he didn't see Dick or Crane anywhere. He went over to try and help the people who were still alive when he heard Dick's voice.
"Not so fast Hood," the older vigilante stated. Conner turned around to see Dick standing about 40 feet away, in the middle of the path. And only 20 feet away, in between the two superheroes, were Crane and the Red Hood.
"Aw, look at this," Crane said with an amused grin. "Brothers reunited. How sweet."
Conner felt his blood grow cold. Still staring at Dick, he saw that his face had paled. Since he had only found out about Jason apparently working with Crane half an hour ago, he hadn't considered what that all could mean. Hadn't considered what all Jason could have told him. He would've thought that Jason would still be keeping some secrets from the criminal, like their secret identities. However, Crane's words definitely implied that he knew who they really were, or at least, knew who Jason and Dick were, and how they were connected to each other. That really wasn't good.
"Walk away Hood, and leave him to us," Dick finally broke the silence, choosing to ignore Crane's words and their implications for the moment.
Crane frown slightly, then leaned closer to Jason and asked, "Are you really going to take orders from the Titans? After all, the last time you were with them, that didn't really go so well."
"Hood, you know the criminals in Gotham. As soon as you're done being useful to them, to Crane, he's going to drop you. Just come with us. We can help you," Dick offered, holding out his hand.
For a moment, Jason seemed to considered Dick's words. For a moment, Conner thought he would stop what he was doing and accept their help. But then, he raised his weapon and said, "Your help never did me any good Nightwing, why would that change now?"
Dick barely managed to duck as Jason started shooting once again. Conner got up to run and pull him out of the way when someone from behind him also started firing. Then, smoke filled the air, covering Jason, Crane and Dick from sight. Someone had thrown a smoke bomb. The cop behind him stopped firing, as he was unable to see his targets, but Conner didn't have that problem. With his x-ray vision, he saw only one figure, now on the ground, instead of the three that were originally there. It only took a second for him to realize who it was.
"Nightwing!" He shouted as he ran to his leader's side. The older man was awake, but gasping, and bleeding from his shoulder. The clone examined the injury and found that it was a bullet wound. It was an incredibly lucky shot. There weren't that many weak points in Dick's Nightwing armour.
Dick managed to reach up and grab Conner's wrist as he whispered, "Crane, Hood, where are they?"
"They're gone," Conner informed him, then pulled him up to his feet. "Come on, we gotta get you out of here."
2018TITANS2018
Jason had stashed a motorcycle right at by the gates of Arkham Asylum for when he and Crane made their getaway. Once they would get away, they would head outside of the city and away from the cameras to where a car was waiting for them that Jason had planted to days earlier. That way, they could come back into the city without anyone realizing it. Then, they could get to the next stage of their plan. It was foolproof, or at least, he thought it was.
He wasn't really planning on Dick and Conner showing up. Since Crane was appearing to be helping the GCPD and was imprisoned in Arkham, he should have been cleared from any suspicion. However, Dick proved that he was smarter than Jason gave him credit for. Thankfully, Jason and Crane were able to still get away. After he started shooting at Dick, one of the cops also started firing, giving the two of them the distraction he needed to throw the smoke bomb to cover their escape. As they were running towards the bike though, he turned his head to see if anyone was chasing them, and saw the Dick was lying on the ground. He didn't really get a chance to process it at the time, but now, outside of the Gotham city limits the image of him lying limp flashed in front of his eyes, his voice echoed in his ears, and he fell to his hands and knees. He barely had time to rip off his helmet before threw up.
Why was Dick trying to help him? He had just tried to kill Hank for crying out loud. He, and the rest of the Titans should be furious with him, should be blaming him for everything, just like they did before when he was innocent of what they were accusing him of. They didn't care about helping him then, why now? Maybe it was just Dick who cared. After all, he was the one who found him on the roof in San Francisco and talked him down. And it was only Dick and Conner who confronted him and Crane. Maybe that was why the rest of the Titans weren't there to catch them. They didn't want to help Jason. Not that he even needed their help, he was doing just fine with the help the drug Crane helped him make. Unless, it was actually a trap. Everything was racing through his mind, and Jason couldn't think clearly anymore. It was all too confusing.
"Come on kid," Crane said, talking a hold of Jason's arm and yanking him back up to his feet. The younger man struggled to get his balance before looking up at the former doctor. Crane sighed loudly when he saw Jason's face.
"Hey, it's his own fault. He got involved and he shouldn't have." Crane's gaze was intense, though gentle as he stared at Jason. It was strangely calming. Jason's life had been so chaotic in the last few months, and with the Titans now here, it was getting worse. He was losing control, and it terrified him.
"Here, take this," Crane ordered, pulling an inhaler out of his pocket and holding it up to Jason's mouth. "Made it special just last night. It'll make you feel way better."
Jason immediately opened his mouth and breathed in the drug. His opinion of drugs had definitely changed over the last month or so. He hated them before, but now, he could see how the drugs helped people. This drug that Crane helped him make calmed him, made his mind focus on what needed to be done, took the fear away. If he had this drug before, Bruce wouldn't have taken Robin away from him. He wouldn't have been looking for a new partner. He wouldn't have probably been getting ready to kick him out.
"Remember, cleaning up Gotham is pointless. You have to control it, and you can only do that if you're truly fearless," the criminal told him after Jason emptied the inhaler. When Jason stayed silent, Crane asked, "You good?"
"Yeah, I'm good," Jason replied, nodding his head. Crane smiled, gave him a gentle clap on his left shoulder before dropping his hands completely.
"Then let's go."
Jason hesitated for a moment as Crane walked over to the car. The drug he just inhaled was making him a little dizzy but he could feel his body relax. The shaking had completely stopped by now, and the panic and anxiety was gone. His worries faded away as well. Crane was right, it was Dick's own fault he got injured. He willingly stood in their way and tried to stop them from leaving.
In silence, Jason grabbed his helmet and made his way to the car where Crane was waiting for him.
AN – One thing I really liked in season 3 is that they had Dick quickly figure out that Crane was working with Jason because in the comics lately, and in some other movies and shows, they dumb him down a bit to make other characters look good and I hate that. However, I would've liked to see how Dick figured out Crane's involvement, so to me, him figuring out the drug Jason was making is how he put the pieces together. I also put Conner and Dick together because one, where was Conner when Kory and Gar were finding Blackfire and Dick was kidnapping Crane? And two, we need more Dick and Conner team ups. My theory with Conner's current parent and identity crisis will lead to him seeing that Dick is his father, like he is Gar and Rachel's father. Hope you all liked this chapter! See you all next time!
