After Addison left with Suzanne, Richard stayed back to talk to Derek. He walked over and sat down in the chair.

"How are you doing, Derek?" Richard asked his head of neurosurgery.

"That depends. Are you asking Dr. Shepherd or Derek?" Derek laughed.

"Both, I guess." Richard smiled.

"Dr. Shepherd would answer that my injuries are healing well. I started physical therapy today and will continue daily regiments. I need to be able to sit in a wheelchair to go home." he answered. "Derek, on the other hand, would say I've been better." he sighed.

"I can relate to that. That's how I felt after my brain surgery." Richard said sympathetically.

"Doctors always do make the worst patience." Derek chuckled.

"Yes, speaking of that. You need to be a little nicer to the orderlies who are helping you shower and change." Richard said sternly. Derek rolled his eyes.

"I wasn't THAT disagreeable." Derek defended himself. Richard raised an eyebrow at him before changing the subject.

"Anyway, I have done everything you asked to get ready for your anniversary plans." Dr. Webber said. "When do you want me to bring it by?"

"I am pretty wiped tonight from physical therapy. Let's do it at 11 tomorrow. If you could make sure Addison is out of the room from say 10:30-11, that will give Adele and I enough time to set up. Well, I guess it is more Adele who will be setting up as I can't really get out of bed." Derek answered.

"That sounds like a plan. I will let Adele know." Richard responded. "Well, I better go make sure there are no fires to put out. I will see you tomorrow, Derek." He got up and left the room.

Derek changed the bed from a sitting up position to laying down. He winced in pain as he tried to move in a more comfortable position. It was getting close to another dose of pain medication, which meant his previous dose had worn off and he was in a lot of pain.

Derek stared at the ceiling with his arm resting on his forehead and thought about everything that had transpired over the last week. He couldn't believe that just a little over a week ago, he had been in blissful denial with Meredith. And now he was planning his 14th anniversary with Addison.

Were they just kidding themselves? Could they really move past their affairs? There was no denying that he still had very strong feelings for Addison. That he still loved her. He had thoroughly been enjoying their alone time in the hospital, but they both had screwed up really bad in the last few months. Would they be able to move past it all once they were back in the real world? Derek continued to mull things over when a nurse entered to take his vitals and administer more pain medication. Soon his pain had subsided and he was able to drift off to sleep.

Derek awoke in the middle of the night surprised to find Addison curled up next to him.

The nurse must have given him a stronger dose of pain medication for him not to wake up when she crawled in bed.

As he looked down at her, he was once again blown away by her natural beauty. He was one of the few people whoever got to see her like this. No make up. Hair a mess from sleep. Completely natural. He thought she was beautiful. He felt a strong pull towards her that hadn't been there in a long time. Derek reached down and ran his finger lightly on her jaw line. He picked her hand up and kissed it lightly.

"Hey." Addison said, slowly waking up. She smiled up at him as she noticed he was holding her hand.

"Hey" Derek answered, giving Addison a small smile. "Happy Anniversary." Addison glanced over at the clock to see it was 2:00 in the morning. It was indeed their 14th wedding anniversary.

"Happy Anniversary" Addison said groggily. Derek leaned down and kissed her lightly. "Are you ok, Derek?" she continued as she looked up at him. He was being so gentle with her. Addison wasn't sure what to think.

"I am ok, Ads. Go back to sleep." He answered. She laid back down and they were soon both fast asleep.

Later that morning, Addison was awoken when Richard walked in the room. He smiled when he saw the couple cuddled together.

"Oh, hi Chief." Addison said, slightly disoriented. She sat up and got out of the bed, straightening her clothes the best she could.

"Hey, Addison. Sorry to wake you." Richard responded. Derek woke up from the talking and looked back and forth between his wife and boss.

"What's up, Chief?" Derek asked as he shifted to more of a sitting position.

"Nothing much. I just wanted to wish you guys a happy anniversary." Richard smiled.
"Thanks, Richard." Addison said, pleased that her mentor remembered.

"Also, Addison, Suzanne asked me if I could ask you to meet her in my office around 9:30. She wants to discuss Katie's case with you." Dr. Weber informed her.

"Of course. Let me just get cleaned up and I will be right there." Addison answered. Richard nodded and left the room.

Addison walked back over to Derek and took his hand. "Would you like me to go get us some cinnamon rolls in the cafeteria?" she asked. It was a tradition that they had started years ago.

August 2006

Addison entered their apartment exhausted. She had been at work all day and wanted nothing more than to get a shower and go to bed. It definitely wasn't the way she had planned to spend her first anniversary. She still had only seen Derek for a short time that morning before they both headed out to work. She wasn't expecting him home for another hour.

When Addison got out of the shower, she was surprised to see a light on in the kitchen. She walked out and found Derek lighting some candles.

"Derek? I thought you weren't going to be home for a while?" Addison said in surprise.

"I got off early." Derek said shrugging his shoulders. He walked over and wrapped his arms around Addison. He dipped her and gave her a deep, passionate kiss. "I didn't want to spend another minute of our anniversary away from you." he continued when they came up for air.

"What is all this?" Addison asked, gesturing to the candles on the table.

"I made us cinnamon rolls." Derek replied. Addison looked up at him and raised an eyebrow.

"Cinnamon rolls?" she questioned.

"Well, it was all I could find in our fridge and the grocery store closed before I got there." Derek said sheepishly. Addison laughed.

"It's perfect, Babe." Addison said, giving him another kiss. "Happy Anniversary, Derek. I love you."

"I love you too, Addie." Derek replied.

"It wouldn't be our anniversary without them." Derek smiled up at her. Addison leaned over and gave him a kiss. "And maybe while you are at it, get a breath mint." Derek laughed. Addison smacked him lightly on the shoulder.

Addison returned later after getting a shower and changing clothes with 2 large cinnamon rolls. Derek was watching TV when she entered.

"Wow! Those are some large cinnamon rolls!" Derek exclaimed, turning the TV off.

"I know. I thought about only getting one to share, but I figured it is a special occasion so what the hell." Addison said. She went over and sat down in the char and gave Derek the food.

"I'm glad you got two. I'm starving." Derek replied. Addison's stomach growled in response.

"Apparently so am I." Addison laughed. They ate in silence for a few minutes. Addison glanced at the clock and realized it was 9:15. "I guess I need to go meet Dr. Clark." she sighed. She took one more bite of the cinnamon roll before standing up.

"Ok, Babe. I will see you soon." Derek said. Addison looked down at him and smiled. It felt good to hear Derek call her babe. She leaned down and gave him a kiss before walking out of the room.

While Addison was meeting with Dr. Clark, Adele arrived with what Derek had requested. Flowers, candles, pictures, and food.

"Adele, thank you so much for helping me with this." Derek said sincerely. He sat the bed up as much as he could. "I am sorry I can't really help set up." he said frustratedly as he ran his hand through his hair.

"Derek, relax. I am happy to help." Adele replied. "If I have learned one thing in my old age, it is that asking for help is a good thing. Now, you just tell me where to set all of this up."

For the next hour, Adele followed Derek's instructions on where to place everything. Richard had informed the staff on the floor that they were to leave Derek alone today. No one was to go in the room without his permission.

"I wonder why no one is allowed in Derek's room today." Meredith wondered as she took a bite of an apple. George, Christina, and her were at the nurses station down the hall from Derek's room. "Did Callie say anything to you, George?" she asked her friend.

"Not really. She just said that Derek didn't have physical therapy today." George shrugged.

"What about Burke, Christina? Did he say anything to you?" Meredith asked, turning towards her. Christina shrugged her shoulders.

"He didn't. I want to know more about what is going on with the she-Shepherd case. Why are there so many police involved in it?" Christina wondered.

"Trust me. You do NOT want to know what is going on with that case." Izzie said as she sneaked up behind her friends.

"What aren't you telling us, Blondie?" Christina asked.

"I am sworn to secrecy." Izzie answered. She grabbed a chart from behind the desk and took off down the hallway.

"Do you think something happened between Derek and Addison? I mean, I haven't seen his kids for a couple of days. I have barely seen her. And now, we are being told to leave him alone? Something isn't right." Meredith said, more to herself than her friends.

Christina and George exchanged a look behind their friend's back.

"I don't think anything happened, Mer." Christina began slowly. "I was on call last night and saw Addison go into Derek's room in the middle of the night and not come out."

"Maybe they got into a fight." Meredith continued, basically ignoring Christina. "I should check on him." Before Christina or George could say anything, both of their pagers went off. They took off down the hall, leaving Meredith at the nurses station staring at Derek's door.

None of the interns realized that Addison had come up behind them and heard the last part of the conversation. She decided to stay quiet to see how this played out.

Meredith slowly made her way towards Derek's room when she noticed the hallway was basically empty. She slowly opened the door and went in. She was shocked to see flowers all over the room with candles placed on the window sill. Pictures of the Shepherd family were hung around the walls.

"Meredith?" Derek asked in confusion. He was reading a book and had looked up when he heard the door open. He had been expecting his wife, not his ex-girlfriend.

"Uh, um, sorry." Meredith stammered. Clearly Derek and Addison were not fighting. She immediately left the room.

Addison had watched Meredith enter her husband's room and was surprised to see her exit so quickly. She made her way to Derek's room and pushed the door open. She gasped at what she saw.

"Derek, what in the world?" Addison exclaimed, placing her hand over her mouth. Roses, tiger lilies, and dahlia flowers were placed all over the room. All 3 flowers meant something different to the couple. Tiger lilies were what Derek gave her on their first date. Dahlias were what he gave her when he proposed. Roses had been the flower of their wedding.

"Happy Anniversary, Addie." Derek smiled. He still was confused why Meredith had come in the room earlier, but he was glad his wife was here now.

"How did you do all of this?: Addison asked, as she walked around and looked at the pictures.

"Mom helped me get the pictures. Adele helped me get the flowers and candles and then helped me set it up. Richard helped me get you out of the room and keep everyone else away." Derek explained.

"I saw Meredith just leave here." Addison said casually, wanting to see how her husband would react.

"I have no idea what that was about. She just walked in my room and then left." Derek said quickly. He didn't want Addison to think something was going on.

"I know, Derek. It's ok." Addison said as she walked over to the bed. She told Derek about the conversation she overheard from the interns.

"Let's forget about drama filled interns." Derek replied as he pulled Addison closer giving her a kiss. "I have a surprise for you. Can you get the laptop?"

Addison walked over to the table, picked up the laptop, and brought it back over to the bed. She sat down next to Derek, who opened up the laptop. He started a slideshow that had pictures of their life together.

It started with them in med school while they were dating. Then pictures of their wedding came up. Soon pictures of them as young parents, interns, and residents came through while some of their favorite songs as a couple...Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol, You and Me by Lifehouse, I Don't Wanna Close my Eyes by Aerosmith

Tears started to form in Addison's eyes when she heard the Aerosmith song. It was the song they had danced to at their wedding.. She couldn't believe Derek had put so much thought in their anniversary after everything they had been through recently. She rested her head on his shoulder while they watched the slideshow.

"I can't believe it has been 14 years." Addison whispered as the slideshow finished. Derek closed the laptop, and Addison put it on the bedside table. "Derek, I am so sorry for the mess I have made of our marriage." Addison choked out. Seeing all the pictures had made her realize how far they really had come from their early days.

"Addie, I forgive you." Derek replied. Seeing his wife so distraught tore at his heart. He pulled her to his chest and let her cry. He too had tears coming down as he ran his fingers up and down her spine. "We both have made a lot of mistakes. I love you and want to move past them." he continued as he ran his fingers through her hair.

Addison sat up and looked at him. "You said you love me. You haven't said that in a really long time." Derek felt like he had been punched in the gut when he realized how true that statement was. He couldn't remember the last time he had told Addison he loved her.

"I'm sorry, Ads." he said.

"I forgive you, too Derek. I also love you and want to move past all of this." Addison smiled. Derek pulled her to him and kissed her deeply.

"Addison, go lock the door." Derek whispered against her lips. Addison laughed, got up and went to lock the door. She double checked to make sure all the shades were closed.

"Derek, are you in any pain?" Addison asked as she noticed Derek wince a little.

"I am ok, Addie. I just need to lay the bed back down." Derek answered. Once the bed was all the way down, Addison crawled in next to him. Soon the couple had resumed their makeout session.

Derek began to undo the buttons on Addison's shirt. She sat up and quickly removed both her shirt and bra.

"Addison Shepherd, you are the most beautiful woman I have ever met." Derek exclaimed. "You have no idea how much I want to have sex with you right now." he moaned as Addison laid down topless next to him.

"I think I do." Addison teased, running her fingernails over his chest and glancing down at his obvious pleasure. "You know, Derek. There is a lot more we can do besides sex." she said coyly as she kissed around his jaw line.

For the next 30 minutes, the couple found creative ways to reconnect that didn't hurt Derek's injuries.

"Well, I wasn't expecting all of that today." Derek said, as Addison cuddled up next to him naked. "Not that I am complaining." he said as he drew circles on her back.

"Me either." Addison said, smiling up at him. "What do you want to do for lunch?"

"Adele made us a picnic style lunch. It's in the box over there.' Derek answered.

Addison looked at him in surprise. "You really did think of everything." She got up and went to get the food. The couple continued to talk as they ate sandwiches, grapes, and cake.

After eating lunch, Addison curled back up next to Derek. They watched TV for a little while. Soon both of them had drifted off to sleep.
