Addison is reviewing some charts on the computer when she hears the cheerful sound of Derek's voice:
"Good morning, Addison!"
"What does that mean?"
"It's a civilized greeting, used by civilized people. And we really need to be civilized."
"Are you trying to be funny?"
Addison asks with furrowed brows. Derek then gets serious and asks:
"Can we talk alone?"
Knowing what he means, she nods and gets up, following him to na on-call room. As soon as she closes the door, Derek asks:
"How are you?"
"What do you want, Derek?"
Addison asks with her arms crossed. Derek lets out a sigh and speaks in a slightly annoyed tone:
"I said how are you, Addison?"
"I'm fine, Derek. Still pregnant with your child, tired, nauseous, confused and with patients to attend to."
She speaks totally without patience. Derek runs his hands through his hair, sighs to calm himself down, and then confesses:
"I couldn't reach Meredith."
"What?"
"I went to talk to her but she was upset about her mother and I couldn't speak."
"Were you going to tell your girlfriend about my pregnancy last night?"
Addison asks incredulously. Derek casually explains:
"I told you I was going to tell."
"But not last night! Derek, you can't tell people I'm pregnant. I'm only seven weeks along, haven't had na appointment yet and I'm not ready for everyone to know."
"She's not everyone, Addison!"
"I know not. She's your soulmate, the love of your life and who knows what else! But I'm the one pregnant, I'm carrying this baby and it's not up to you who and when people find out ."
Addison nervously states. Derek realizes that she is right and calms down:
"Okay, Addie. I get it, but you know people are going to have to know eventually. Have you told anyone besides me yet?"
"I ended up telling Callie Torres yesterday."
"Na unknown resident might know, but my girlfriend wouldn't?"
"I vented to her yesterday because I had to and I know she's not going to tell a bunch of her intern friends."
"Fine. Enough discussion, I won't say anything yet."
"Thanks."
She starts to move towards the door, but Derek asks:
"When are you going to the doctor?"
"What?"
"You talked about going to the obstetrician, when are you going?"
"Actually I have my first appointment this afternoon."
"What time?"
"Two."
"Damn it! I have surgery."
"I didn't make na invite."
She teases. Derek runs his hands through her hair as he exclaims:
"You don't make it easy either!"
"You are not being forced to endure. I am no longer your obligation."
"Okay, Addison. I'm not going to argue with you anymore, after all, we both have patients."
"Am I released?"
Addison teases again. Derek opens the door and speaks before leaving:
"Call me if you need anything."
She doesn't answer, just watches him go, deciding to wait a bit before leaving too."
AAAAAA
Addison is delivering the last of the day's charts to the nurses' station when Derek approaches. He has a half smile on his face and hands you a glass of juju. Addison takes it and asks with furrowed brows:
"Why did you bring me this?"
"The luckier we are today, the better."
He states with a sincere smile. Addison smiles back and takes a sip of her drink.
Derek then asks:
"Should I have brought your lunch? Did you have lunch?"
"Of course I had lunch, Derek. And you didn't need to bring me anything. Why are you here anyway?"
"Because I'm coming with you. I've given Nelson the surgery."
The statement takes her by surprise and she smiles again, soon covering it up with another sip of chocolate. Derek has another smile at this point when he says:
"It wasn't right to miss the appointment. You don't mind me being here, do you?"
"Since when do you care what I care about?"
"Addie!" Derek scolds her. She reassures him:
"It's okay if you go. But let's go, I don't want to be a late patient."
Derek agrees and follows her out of the hospital. They walk in silence through the parking lot and Derek doesn't argue when he has to get into the passenger seat of her car, he doesn't know the way anyway.
After a few minutes of silence, Addison asks without taking her eyes off the road:
"What excuse do you intend to make for going out in the middle of the day with your ex-wife?"
"She's not one to chase me down the halls, Addison."
He immediately kicks himself, realizing how her words sound and explains:
"I meant that she has no reason to seek me out."
"It's okay, Derek. I already understand that the appeal is her being the antiAddison."
She speaks in a dismissive tone. Derek prefers silence and looks out the window for a while.
After a few meters of uncomfortable silence, the redhead speaks again:
"There's someone else who knows about the pregnancy. Nancy."
"You want a secret, but you told the most gossip of my sisters?!"
Derek asks rather indignantly. Addison rolls her eyes before replying:
"Your sisters aren't gossips. And I felt comfortable telling her."
"Was she the first person you told?"
"And she helped me understand that she couldn't wait to talk to you any longer."
"At least that much! Now I understand why she was so quiet when I took her to the airport, I wanted to keep it a secret."
"And you calling her a gossip."
They laugh together at this point. Derek then asks:
"I assume this was after I took you to the bar?"
"Yes. We had dinner together at the hotel."
"It's good to know that things haven't changed between you and the girls."
"It is good?"
"Yeah. I know how much you care about each other."
"Your sisters have always meant family to me. From the beginning."
"And that made me love you even more."
Addison smiles sincerely at his words, knowing he means it. However, she starts to enter the parking lot of the building and speaks, breaking the moment:
"We're here."
He nods and the two get out of the vehicle together.
AAAAAA
Fortunately, time in the waiting room is short.
Soon Addison's name is called and the two are ushered into the office. As soon as he sees them, the obstetrician gets up, he greets them saying excitedly:
"Dr. Addison Montgomery it is na honor to have you here."
Addison smiles, returning the greeting, and says:
"Dr. Gilbert, you may call me Addison under the circumstances. You come highly recommended."
"Thank you. Doctor Shepherd, congratulations."
The older man speaks extending his hand to Derek who nods and shakes. Soon the man guides them to sit around the table and begins to ask:
"So Addison how are you feeling?"
"The nausea is increasing, but nothing unbearable. I had uncomfortable implantation cramps, but they passed."
"Right. I assume you've already had blood work done?"
"Yes. I made it on my own and brought it with me."
She fumbles in her purse and hands the folder with the exams to the obstetrician. After a thorough analysis the man states:
"Your exams are looking great, Addison. Absolutely nothing to worry about."
Addison smiles and Derek strokes her thigh, realizing what he's doing, he immediately withdraws his hand. Fortunately, it is at this awkward moment that the doctor asks:
"Can we move on to the exam?"
Addison nods and the doctor calls na assistant to help her.
When Addison is lying on the stretcher, Derek is still sitting in the same place, she then asks:
"You come?"
"Can I?"
"Clear."
Derek then gets up and walks over, standing beside her. He reaches out to take her hand and after seconds of hesitation, she reaches out and intertwines her fingers with his.
The doctor can't help but frown and Addison explains:
"We got divorced a few weeks ago."
"Oh I'm so sorry."
"Fine. We're fine."
Addison asserts without looking at either the doctor or her ex-husband. The older man nods and begins the examination. Addison is uncomfortable for a few moments until the angle finally allows her to see her baby. It's just a blur on the screen, but it's there and she smiles with teary eyes. Derek shakes her hand, smiling too, and leans in to kiss her temple. It is at this point that Doctor Gilbert asks:
"Can we hear the heartbeat?"
"Clear!"
The two respond at the same time making the doctor smile. He turns up the volume and at that moment the strong sound of heartbeat fills the room echoing rhythmically.
Addison takes a deep breath, a wave of emotions hitting her hard, tears well up in her eyes and Derek puts his arms around her shoulders. At this point the doctor apologizes:
"I'll leave you alone for a few minutes."
The man leaves and Addison relaxes her body against Derek's chest and he kisses the top of her head. After a few moments, she pulls away, her eyes shining, and says:
"We're going to have a baby."
Derek smiles at the obvious statement and strokes her cheek, wiping away her tears as he speaks:
"We're having a baby, Addie."
He kisses her forehead and then asks:
"Are you well?"
"I'm... It just got real."
"I know."
He smiled. Addison is silent for a few more minutes, feeling his arms calm her down, but then asks him to call the doctor back so they can continue with the appointment.
The consultation ends quickly after the ultrasound, the doctor assures that Addison is fine, but that due to her age special monitoring will be required and that she should gradually reduce the pace of work.
After that Addison and Derek leave the office each carrying a printout of the ultrasound.
AAAAA
As soon as they enter the elevator, Addison asks pointing to the photo in Derek's hands:
"Are you sure you want to take this?"
"Why not?"
"What if Meredith finds it?"
"Addie..."
"I'm not ready yet, Derek. I know the baby is fine and everyone will know at some point or another, but I'm still so confused about all of this and I need some time."
She ups the ante a bit at the end. Derek approaches her, he puts his arms around her and pulls her into a hug whispering in her ear:
"It's okay, Addie. I respect your time."
"Thanks."
"I'll keep this in my wallet, just for myself."
"Okay."
She speaks before pulling away from him a little as the elevator opens. They leave side by side and get into her car again.
In the car, they are silent with Addison driving and Derek concentrating on seeing the image of his son again and again, both needing to absorb the emotions of the day. A little before arriving at the hospital, Derek puts the image in his wallet, he says goodbye to the redhead with a kiss on the cheek and goes in to finish the work shift, while she decides to go to the hotel and rest.
Both are overwhelmed by all the news, but both are also happy and certain that having the baby together is the best choice they could have made.
