2nd November
The whole school seemed to turn up all at once. Professor McGonagall appeared behind Professor Dumbledore and whispered something into his ear. You could see the cogs turning in his brain and then he whispered back.
In the background all I could hear was Draco saying in his stupid little voice, "Enemies of the heir beware? You'll be next mudbloods!" his grin showed he was waiting for some sort of reaction, but no one gave him the satisfaction.
The four of us were led into Lockhart's dimly-lit office. We sat down in the shadows of the office and I was silently praying that we wouldn't get into trouble for something that we didn't do. Next thing though I got a nudge in my arm from Hermione who wanted my attention whilst all the attention of the teachers' was on Mrs Norris (or Lockhart on himself, as always).
"Aowh?" I looked at her, but she redirected my gaze to Ron.
He whispered, "Was it you?"
"What?" I asked, thinking I had heard wrong.
"You left the party? You came back and we found Mrs Norris and the wall...?"
I felt my heart beat faster, I found myself speaking instead of whispering, "Are you accusing me?"
"Shhh!" Hermione said, luckily no one heard.
"We're asking you if you did it."
"No I jolly well did not." I said to them, highly offended. I could feel my blood boil.
"Miss Pink?!" I jumped as I heard Professor McGonagall's voice boom across the room.
"Yes?" my voice quivered.
"Walk with me?" she directed me out of the office. This must be a method of interrogation. We walked in silence to her office where we sat down and she offered me a cup of tea.
'Wait, what?' I thought aloud.
"Tea? Biscuit?"
"Erm... Yes please? Milk, no sugar?" she pointed at a tartan tin sitting on top of her desk which I opened, revealing a packet of Ginger Newts.
"Go on, take one!" she nodded, "Here's your tea, be careful, it's hot!" she set down a lovely china cup and saucer in front of me. I looked down at the tea and then up at McGonagall. There must have been a catch, right...?
I decided to hedge my bets and say it, "Professor, I didn't do it, I swear!"
"I know you didn't, Mrs Norris has been petrified, magic far more advanced than that of a second year, not that I doubt any of your abilities, either way that is not the reason why I brought you here."
I suddenly felt a little more relaxed, taking a bite out of the Ginger Newt. It was terribly dry, so I took a sip of my tea.
"I'm terribly sorry to be the bearer of bad news, Miss Pink but..." McGonagall paused. I managed to take a massive gulp of tea, which burnt my mouth, as I was about to swallow she continued, "Your Grandmother has taken ill and was rushed into the muggle hospital-" At that moment my whole life went on standby. All I could imagine was the worst case scenario.
"What?!" I gasped, with the scalding hot tea in my mouth, swallowing it down my wind pipe and I began to choke. Half of the tea spurted out of my mouth and onto the floor. I coughed and coughed, tears streaming down my face. Professor McGonagall spoke an incantation which cleared my lungs, allowing me to speak, "What's wrong with her? Can I go see her? She's not... dead?"
"No, no, she's still alive! Your mother, Helen, contacted me half an hour ago saying that your Grandmother was requesting your presence."
"Can I go?" I asked, arising from my seat, no longer feeling that short spell of comfort. I needed to be by her side, now.
"Yes, I shall assist you; a house elf has gathered a few of the essentials for you. Have you ever apparated before?"
"No?"
We grabbed my things and made our way across the grounds of the school and out through the gates. She explained to be that by touching her arm, and then turning on the spot she could transport me to a safe distance from the hospital so that we could get there fast, so I did as she requested. I felt like I had just been turned inside out and held upside down for a split second before I felt my whole weight crashing down onto my feet again. I thanked McGonagall and ran for the door, ignoring the sickly feeling in my stomach, the pounding headache and the shooting pain in my knees. That didn't matter.
I got through the door to the main entrance and saw my father and Peter who had a few racing cars and was running around the reception area, causing havoc to those around him. "It's about time you showed up. I've been waiting here for ages." my father jeered.
Under any normal circumstances, I would have said something in retaliation, but I really wasn't myself. I followed in Dad's trail up to ward 9 on wing E, Granny's bed was the first on the left. I got to her bedside and dropped everything, wrapping my arms around her and holding her close.
"Careful honey, I'm an old woman now!" she said in a very frail voice. It was then that I broke down.
"What happened?" I asked, drying my tears on my sleeve. Though my watery eyes I managed to see two casts, one on her leg and the other on her arm, and a massive purple bump on her forehead.
"Those stairs have gotten the better of me again!" she laughed, but winced in pain, explaining that she had broken a few ribs on the fall.
Not so long later, mum stood and said, "Well, now you've got your wish, the three of us will go home. I'm glad you're alright! Goodnight!" she kissed her mother on the cheek and was off.
"I'm sorry to scare you like that, my sweet!" Granny whispered to me.
"Just as long as you're alright, that's what matters to me!"
