27th May cont'd
"Kathryn! Kathryn! Are you okay?" As I opened my eyes a boy with dark brown hair, green eyes and rounded glasses peered down at me.
"Who's Kathryn?" I asked, my head was fuzzy and my vision was blurred, "Who are you?" I felt worse as I sat up, so laid back on the ground beneath me again.
"Can I take a look at her, Harry?" came a voice in the distance.
"Who's Harry?" I asked, my head was thud, thud, thudding. A man with long silver hair and beard came into my weakened view. He placed a hand behind my head and sat me up, "What are you doing? Who are you?" I asked.
"My name is Albus Dumbledore, I am Headmaster at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, can you tell me who you are?" the man with the beard said.
The world started spinning again, "I feel sick…" and before I knew it, I had been sick all over the ground beside me.
"Do I need to get Madam Pomfery?" the boy with the glasses asked, "What's wrong with her?" he got onto his knees beside me, "Kathryn, it's me, Harry! What happened?" I noticed a lightning shaped scar on his forehead.
"There's no use, Harry…" Albus Dumbledore spoke, "She has had her memory wiped." He then looked up in the opposite direction and said, "Hagrid, I need you to fetch Professor Karkaroff. His student has been attacked. When you're done with that, kindly alert Professor Moody. Professor Snape, can you kindly ask Madam Pomfery to attend?"
"No need, Dumbledore," a terrifying voice sounded, "I'm here."
I screamed at the sight of a man with a load of scarred skin, a chunk out of his nose and a fake robotic eye.
"We need to get Kathryn up to the castle, Harry." Albus Dumbledore spoke again to the boy beside me and then looked to someone else in the distance and said, "I don't know where Barty Crouch is, but it is essential that we find him. But first of all, Professor Moody, I need to bring Miss Pink up to the Hospital Wing, she appears to have suffered from a significant memory charm. I'm hopeful Madam Pomfery will be able to sort it."
"Kathryn, can you get up?" the boy with the glasses, Harry spoke, "I'm going to bring you up to the castle."
"NO!" I yelled over the commotion going on around me, I heard other voices talking and arguing, my head was spinning and I didn't feel well – that's all I knew for sure, "I'm not going anywhere with any of you! I don't know who you are. Where am I? What's happened to me?" the voices kept talking, louder and louder, "SHUT UP!" I shouted, "What's going on? Someone help me!" I clutched my head in my hands and rocked myself as my heart rate sped up. As I kept breathing faster and faster the world seemed to go more black, the voices seemed to get quieter and I was left alone.
A woman with a nurses' hat got on her knees beside me and spoke, "Hello dear, have you got a sore head?"
I nodded, wiping my eye with my sleeve, "Where am I?"
"You're in the forest, would it be okay if I brought you into the castle to give you a potion for your head?"
"Why are you giving me a potion?" I grasped onto the tree beside me in fear, "Only witches use potions and they can make people die!" I thought of the countless Disney movies I had watched and all the evil witches.
The nurse witch looked at Albus Dumbledore who looked at Harry with the glasses. Harry then said, "What if we could get you some medicine? Will you come up to the castle with me?"
I shook my head, "But I don't know who you are and my mummy and my teachers told me not to talk to strangers."
A woman with grey hair in a bun spoke to me next, "Come on Kathryn, we need to get you up to the castle. Your parents have told me that it's okay. They wrote me a letter. Let's go!"
I thought about it, "Okay." I put out my hand for her to told it. So the lady with the bun took my hand and I walked up to the castle with her and the boy with the glasses. We walked through the front door, "Wowzah! This place is gigantic! Do you live here?"
"Yes," the woman with the bun said, "I'm going to show you to where you can sleep tonight."
"Are you a princess?" I asked, "Princesses live in castles. Is Albus Dumbledore the King?"
The woman with the bun laughed, "You have a wild imagination. I am not a princess. I am a teacher."
"Oh!" I said, "My teacher is called Mrs Baxter. What class do you teach?"
The boy Harry said, "She teaches class 7!"
"I'm only in P4!" I said, "What is your name?" I asked the Lady with the bun.
"Professor McGonagall." She answered.
We went into a room with 6 beds and Professor McGonagall stopped with me at the door, "You can choose which bed you can sleep in."
"Are we having a sleepover?" I said happily, sitting on the bed beside me and bouncing up and down, "I've only ever had a sleepover once before! It was lots of fun!"
"Mr Potter, would you mind going up to the Common Room and asking Miss Granger to bring Kathryn's essentials down to the Hospital Wing for a sleepover? Perhaps you should also alert Mr Weasley. Then you can return to tell me exactly what happened?" Professor McGonagall then turned to me and said, "Is your head still sore, Kathryn?"
I nodded.
She pursed her lips, "Do you want some… medicine?"
I shook my head, "Mummy doesn't give me medicine for a sore head."
Professor McGonagall went into an office at the end of the big bedroom and talked to the nurse witch. Harry came back into the room and talked to Professor McGonagall, we looked like he had just run a lot in a game of chase. He took a seat beside me and said, "I'm so sorry, Kathryn, so so sorry…"
"Why are you sorry?" I asked, "Were you a naughty boy?"
"Do you remember talking me to me?" Harry asked, "Before you got the sore head?"
I shook my head, "No. Did your mummy and daddy smack your bum for being a naughty boy?"
"No."
"Were you only a little bit naughty?"
Harry looked down at his hands, "Err…"
"Your mummy and daddy don't know, do they?" I thought, "I'll tell them it's okay so that they're not angry. I don't want your mummy and daddy to be cross. I'll tell them that we were playing before I fell over and I got a sore head. Can you tell my mummy and daddy that I wasn't naughty either?"
"Err…" Harry said.
I heard a lot of shouting from outside the room I was staying in for my sleepover. Someone came in and ran over to me, "Katy! Oh my goodness, are you okay?" a boy with ginger hair looked scared, he gave me a very big hug and tried to kiss me.
"AHHHHH!" I squealed, "GET OFF ME!" I shouted, pushing myself back on the bed to the other edge and I fell off and hit the floor.
"Katy, it's me! It's George!" he said, as I picked myself up off the floor and took a few cautious steps backwards as he took a few closer to me, "Look, I'm sorry for what I said. You know I love you, I only said that in anger."
"I don't know you!" I shouted, "I think you should go away."
"Katy, I'm sorry, can we at least talk about this?"
I screamed at him, "I DON'T WANT TO TALK TO YOU! I DON'T KNOW WHO YOU ARE!"
Professor McGonagall came into the room and said, "What's going on?"
"This boy is trying to hurt me." I pointed my shaking finger at George, hiding behind her, "He said he wants to talk, but I don't want to talk to any more strangers." I started to panic as two more strangers came into the room, "My mummy and daddy are going to be very angry with me. I want to go home. Where is my Granny? She will come and get me and bring me home." I started to cry but tried to stop, because mum and dad don't like it when I cry, "Where am I? Can you call my Granny? My head really hurts…" I asked Professor McGonagall, wiping my tears on my clothes.
"OUT." Professor McGonagall said, "All of you." As everyone left the room, Professor McGonagall lifted out a tissue from her pocket and handed it to me. I blew my nose and handed it back to her, "Did you hurt you back, when you fell?"
I shook my head, "No, I'm okay." I said, rubbing my back.
"Your friend brought you down pyjamas, do you want to put them on?" she asked, pointing at the pile of clothes left on the table at the end of my bed.
I started taking off my clothes.
"My dear, you get changed behind the curtain." Professor McGonagall pulled the curtain around my bed and I continued getting undressed.
"Is my Granny coming?" I asked.
Professor McGonagall's voice sounded, "I'll let you know when she gets here. Are you in your pyjamas now?"
"Yes." I said, and Professor McGonagall came behind the curtain and said, "I got you some tea."
"Thank you." I took a sip and scolded myself, "Aoww."
Professor McGonagall took the cup off me, "Be careful, it's hot." She walked out from the curtain and came back a few minutes later, "Perhaps some juice would be better? Do you want to get into bed?"
I nodded. I got underneath the covers and drank the juice before falling asleep.
28th May
I woke up the next morning in the big room where there were a number of people talking in the office at the end. "She's weak, she's vulnerable, she doesn't know who she is or anything about magic, bringing her to St Mungo's is not an option. She's terrified of people crowding around her. Minerva had to lie to her last night to convince her to come into the castle." a woman's voice sounded.
"Something happened down in the forest, she saw something." Said a voice I hadn't heard before, it belonged to a man, "And the exchange student… Krum? How was he found?"
The woman replied, "Stunned, he's asleep here in the Hospital Wing. You can talk to him if he consents, but you are not talking to Kathryn. Not for a stupid medical experiment. No thank you."
"Let me know if she progresses." The man's voice sounded again, "She may wake up this morning and have regained full consciousness, she may be as confused and disorientated as last night, every condition is different. All I know is that she's a fighter."
A third voice sounded, "Thank you, Jensen."
A few minutes later, after a whooshing sound, one of the individuals walked past the end of my bed, but I couldn't see who it was with the curtain covering around me. The nurse witch walked past the curtains and I stared at her, lifting the bed covers up to hide myself a bit.
"How long have you been awake, dear?" she asked me.
"I'm really scared; I don't want you to hurt me." my bottom lip quivered as I tried to stop myself from crying, mum and dad hated it when I cried, "I don't know where I am."
"You're at Hogwarts, dear." The woman replied, "I'm not going to hurt you." She took out a stick and pointed it at my body.
I whimpered, "Am I in jail? Mum and dad said that I'd go to jail if I was a naughty girl…"
The woman shook her head, "You're not in jail, you're in hospital."
"Why am I in hospital?" I asked.
"You had a sore head, is it still sore now?" she put a hand on my forehead.
I shook my head, "Mum and dad don't make me go to hospital if I have a sore head. They don't like it when I'm in hospital…" I stuck my feet out of the side of the bed and onto the cold floor, "I think I should go home… Professor McGonagall said that my Granny was coming to get me. Is she here?"
"No," the nurse witch woman said, "She said that she can't come for a while, but your mum and dad say that you can stay here for a while. They said that I can look after you."
"But I don't know you…"
She looked surprised, "I'm Madam Pomfery. I promise I'll take good care of you." She left my bedside and returned with a tray and sat it on the table at the end of my bed and pulled it closer to me, "Eat up, dear."
She then went into talk to someone in the hospital having a sleepover like me. The boy had a funny voice. He kept asking Madam Pomfery if I was okay, but I kept eating my breakfast. I liked eating bacon and eggs. Only my Granny would let me eat this when mum and dad are at work.
When I finished eating and got washed and dressed, I could hear a knock on the door. Madam Pomfery answered and a girl's voice sounded, asking if she was allowed to visit. "I doubt she'll know who you are, she's not the girl you know. I don't know if it's a good idea…"
"But Madam Pomfery, please, she's our best friend!"
"Any sign of trouble or Kathryn getting upset, you are to leave." Madam Pomfery opened the curtain separating us and said, "I have some people here to meet you, they want to be your friends."
I looked at Madam Pomfery incredulously, "They want to be my friends?" I pointed at myself.
"Of course we do, Kathryn!" said the boy with glasses I met last night.
As he sat down I looked at him, "I know you, you're – you're… You're Harry! I saw you last night. You were in the forest! Did your mummy and daddy find out?"
"Er… no." Harry said, "Don't worry about that."
I smiled, "Okay." Then a girl approached me and took a seat on the end of my bed, "You've got very curly hair. Mine's only a little bit curly." I told her.
"You've got lovely hair." She said, "I'm Hermione."
A boy with ginger hair sat down beside me, on one of the seats, "I'm Ron."
"Ron, like Ronald?" I asked, smiling, it reminded me of Ronald McDonald and I like to eat Happy Meals a lot.
"Yes, but my mum usually calls me that when she's annoyed." Ron said.
"Oh, sorry…" I said, "I don't want your mummy to be annoyed at you. If she doesn't want you to be my friend, it's okay."
Ron looked at me as though he was confused, then he looked at Hermione who nodded, "My mum said it's okay if I'm your friend."
After a minute or so Hermione made a suggestion, "What if we play a game, Kathryn? Do you like games?"
"I love playing games!" I said excitedly, "What game shall we play first?"
"My favourite game is where I ask you a question and you tell me the answer and you ask me a question next?" Hermione smiled.
"I've never played that game before, do you want to go first?"
Hermione nodded, "My first question is what is your favourite colour?"
"Erm…." I thought about it, "Pink, probably."
Harry and Ron nearly choked. Hermione looked cross. Then she smiled at me, "My favourite colour is purple. Now you ask me a question."
"Do you have any pets?" I asked her.
Hermione nodded, "Yes, I've got a cat called Crookshanks. Harry and Ron both have owls, called Hedwig and Pigwidgeon."
"Pig." Ron said.
"That's a funny name, and I've never heard of a pet owl before! I don't have any pets…"
Hermione asked me the next question, "What age are you?"
"I'm eight."
"I'm fifteen." She said.
I opened my mouth, "Wowzah! You must be at big school! Do you have any brothers or sisters?"
Hermione shook her head, "No, I don't. Harry doesn't have any brothers or sisters either, but Ron has five brothers and one sister!"
"Wowzah!" I said, "It must be so much fun in your house! I only have one brother, but he doesn't like me very much. He's five."
"What school do you go to?" Hermione asked.
"Beachgrove Primary School." I answered.
Hermione didn't look at me as she said, "I go to Hogwarts school."
"What is your favourite book?" I asked.
Hermione smiled widely, "Matilda, by Roald Dahl, have you ever read it?"
I nodded, "Yes! I love that book! My favourite book is The BFG!"
"Good choice!" she beamed at me, "Which country do you live in?" Hermione asked.
"Northern Ireland."
"I live in England." She said.
"I thought so, because your voice is different to mine." It made sense, "What is your favourite subject in school?"
"I like history."
"Ooooh," I said, "I'm learning about Florence Nightingale in my class, but my favourite subject is creative writing."
"Do you write in a diary?" Hermione asked me, "I wish I had one."
"Only sometimes." I said, "Sometimes I draw pictures and sometimes I write about my day. What's your best friend's name?"
Hermione jolted on the bed a bit, "You're my best friend, Kathryn. You are!"
"How can I be your best friend when I only just met you?" I said, "My best friend is called Laura, she goes to Beachgrove Primary School with me."
"Oh…" Hermione said and she looked very sad.
"Maybe you can be my second best friend?" I suggested but Hermione started rubbing her eyes, "Are you okay? Do you not want to be my friend?"
Hermione covered her face with her hands, "I – I'd love to be your friend, but H – Harry, Ron and I have to g – go. I'll come and see you again." She got up and said, "G – goodbye." She left a copy of Matilda for me to read on the table at the end of my bed. I hoped that she would still like to be my friend tomorrow.
29th May
Harry, Ron and Hermione didn't come back to visit me today, but someone new came to visit.
"Hello, my name is Ginny." She said, introducing herself, "And I know you don't remember me, but we are friends. I am Ron's sister, you met him yesterday."
I shrugged my shoulders, "I think your hair is pretty."
"Thank you." She smiled, "Do you know where we are?" she asked simply.
"We are in the hospital." I said, "But I don't know how I got here."
"Have you been forgetting more things recently?"
I nodded.
Ginny took a seat beside me on the bed and asked, "Do you remember where were you before? What do you remember before you woke up in the forest?"
I answered, "I was at home with my mummy and daddy, they had just brought me and Peter home from Uncle Gary and Auntie Barbara's house. I don't think Auntie Barbara is very well… But I woke up in the forest, and Harry was there with Albus Dumbledore. I think I should get back home soon before my mum and dad get cross."
"I don't think your mum and dad will be cross. They let you stay here."
I didn't understand, "Why would they let me stay here? I'm supposed to be at school today! I have to go to school every day, even when I don't feel well."
"Hermione told me that you think you're eight years old, but don't you think things are a bit… different?" Ginny paused, "What about when you're in the bathroom, did you look in the mirror? Do you think you looked like yourself, or do you think you looked older?"
"I look older, I'm bigger and I don't understand. Do you think I'm dreaming?"
"No. I think you banged your head when you were in the forest and you have forgotten a few things. Your name is Kathryn Pink, you are fourteen years old and this is where we go to school now." She said, "Where you are right now is a place called Hogwarts."
I gasped, covering my mouth with both hands.
"I don't want you to worry, okay? I want to help you remember. Do you want me to tell you a few other things I think you might have forgotten?"
I nodded.
"You got an acceptance letter for Hogwarts when you were eleven, you're a witch, Kathryn, you can perform magic. You're actually very good, you've just forgotten how…" Ginny then laughed to herself, "You told me last summer that when your magic came in, you made your dad's cabbage patch explode when you were angry."
"I hate that cabbage patch." I said, "I think dad loves it more than he loves me." I covered my mouth, having said too much.
Ginny nodded, "You've told me that, too."
"Have I told you a lot of stuff?"
Ginny nodded again, "You tell Hermione and me a lot of stuff, Harry and Ron some things but you talk to George more."
"Oh."
I saw Ginny look up at Madam Pomfery and took a hold of my hand, "If I ask you a question, Kathryn, will you tell me the truth?"
"Okay."
"Is your head still sore and is your back sore?" she asked.
I nodded, "My back only hurts a little bit, it has been sorer… My head doesn't hurt, but it makes me feel very dizzy. I know there are things I have forgotten because it feels foggy, my head is fuzzy and spinny. I know I should know who you are and where I am, but I don't…" I scratched my head.
"Madam Pomfery has said that it's bedtime. I'm going to come back to see you tomorrow, I want to bring my brothers, Fred and George, do you think that would be okay?"
"Why do you want me to meet your brothers?"
"They're your friends, too, and they really want to see you."
"Ginny?" I asked, "Is George the boy who tried to kiss me?"
She smirked, "Yes."
"Is he my boyfriend?" I giggled uncontrollably, "Or was he just being naughty?"
"Why don't you ask him when you see him tomorrow?"
I got changed into my pyjamas and got ready for bed. Madam Pomfery gave me a potion and I nodded off to sleep as soon as my head hit the pillow, as my body was exhausted.
30th May
I was back in my Auntie's house; I was in my pyjamas. Peter was asleep in the bed beside mine, his blue floppy bunny was peeping over the top of the duvet covers. Mum and dad were away with work and Peter and I were having a sleepover. I had been lying in bed, staring at the ceiling for a long time now, listening to the sound of Auntie Barbara and Uncle Gary arguing in the kitchen below us. I nursed the bruise on my shin from when she pushed me up the stairs earlier when Uncle Gary came home from work. Uncle Gary looked angry as he said, "I found these in the car. What the hell are you doing, Barbara? DRUGS?" that was when she roughly chauffeured us up the stairs and put us to bed without any dinner.
I heard muffled shouting going on, "Do you know Kathryn's afraid of you? She's terrified. What have you done to her? Those bruises, the burns, the sprained ankle, that was all you, wasn't it? They weren't an accident! ADMIT IT!" he yelled louder and louder. I decided to sit at the bottom of the stairs, so that their voices were a little bit clearer. The kitchen door was sitting slightly open.
"I didn't hurt her! She's clumsy! You've seen how she-"
"I'VE HAD ENOUGH OF YOUR LIES, BARBARA!" Gary thundered, "I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE AGAINST THAT POOR CHILD. SHE IS SWEET AND INNOCENT AMONGST ALL OF YOU. YOU – YOU-"
"Go on, say it." Barbara screamed, "I know you've been dying to tell me exactly what's on your mind. Just because our IVF didn't work doesn't mean everything that is wrong in this God-forsaken world is my bloody fault, Gary!"
Gary slammed a cupboard door, "YOU KILLED OUR CHILD, BARBARA! YOU'VE BEEN TAKING THESE AND YOU'RE KILLING YOURSELF, TOO. I HAVE TO TELL SOMEONE! I HAVE TO GET YOU HELP!"
"HOW DARE YOU!" Barbara shrieked, I heard a series of quick footsteps and then Barbara shouted, "GET OFF ME!" I tiptoed and watched upon my Auntie and Uncle fighting in the kitchen, Gary was trying to keep Barbara pinned on the floor as Barbara screamed and thrashed her arms about, kicking him. He let out a groan and she raced to her feet and grabbed the closest kitchen knife. "Can't say anything to my perfect brother now, can you?" she yelled, stabbing Gary in the back three times and as his body fell backwards, she stabbed him another six times in his chest. She laughed to herself, a maddening smile on her face.
I ran to get the phone in the living room and dialled the numbers 999, "Fire, Police or Ambulance, what is your emergency?" the operator spoke.
"Hello," my voice shook as I tried to be quiet, "my Uncle is d-dead, my auntie h-has a knife please come and help m-me…"
"Where are you?" she asked me.
"I'm in my Auntie's house." I said.
"Where is that, honey?"
"It's the yellow house at the top of the hill from Beachgrove Primary School-"
"Stay on the line, sweetheart, tell me, what's your name?"
I screamed, dropping the phone as Auntie Barbara had emerged from the kitchen, running at me, her hands, face and hair all covered in blood, and her leg was bleeding, "WHAT DID YOU SEE? WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?" the menacing look on her face made me freeze on the spot as Barbara picked up the phone and said calmly, "Everything is okay here, false alarm you know what kids are like."She slammed the phone down, "Why don't you watch some TV, dear?" She put a hand on my back and guided me towards the sofa, turned the TV on loud and said, "You're such a good girl, you know that? You just sit there and I'll go and finish doing the dishes."
I watched the TV, frightened to move, seeing Tom and Jerry fighting each other. I whimpered to myself, wiping the tears coming from my eyes. Towards the end of the episode, I could hear the sound of sirens and I looked through the window to see two police cars and three ambulances. As the police let themselves in through the front door, Auntie Barbara rushed into the front room where I was sitting, grabbed me by the hair and put her arm around me and held me extremely tight. As the police found us, Barbara held a knife to my throat, "Don't you dare come any further, or I'll kill her, too."
I shook with fear as the knife cut into my throat with the force she held it with. One of the officers took a step forward, "Let the girl go, Ma'am."
"Take another step and I'll kill her, I'm warning you." Barbara spat, taking the knife from my throat. As she did that, the police officer took a tiny step forwards. Barbara raised the knife and pressed it into my left arm. I yelled out in pain as she slid it across and stabbed it into my shoulder, just below the collarbone. I let out a high-pitched screech. But there was no pain as I woke up in the Hospital Wing of Hogwarts School. Three or four members of staff were crowded around my body as I screamed and screamed, gasping for air, my body covered in sweat.
"HELP ME!" I pleaded, "HELP ME!" I grabbed onto the nearest person.
"You're okay!" the person said, "You're safe. Ve've got you."
Realisation hit me and burst into tears.
"What happened? I could hear the screaming from the other end of the corridor!" I could see Albus Dumbledore entering the Hospital Wing.
"She vos shouting in her sleep, I think she vos having a nightmare. She voke up like this."
"Thank you Viktor," Albus Dumbledore said, "Are you alright, Kathryn, do you remember what happened in your nightmare?"
Still struggling for breath and refusing the mask Madam Pomfery was trying to put over my face I pleaded, "I want Professor McGonagall."
"I'm here, dear, I'm here!" she said, pushing past a number of people and taking my hand, "What is it? What happened?"
"I feel like I've told you before." I said, "Barbara tried to kill me again."
McGonagall's hand squeezed mine, "What age are you, do you remember?"
"I don't know…" I cried, "So much has happened, my parents, they – I've talked to so many shrinks but no one believes me! They – they think it's my fault! I keep doing things – when I get angry – or s-scared."
"She's at least nine now, Dumbledore. Her magic has just come in. I remember getting the notification… The attack happened in August '89… So her magic came in… erm…" I could see Professor McGonagall struggling to think.
"Halloween." I said, "I was dressed up as a witch, Granny bought me the costume" I shuddered, "Mum and Dad wouldn't let me go out and I got really angry. I blew up Dad's cabbage patch!" then I felt scared again, "But mum and dad, they, they-" I struggled to get my words out.
"You're doing really well," McGonagall said, "She's remembering things! She's reliving her childhood, Poppy, the potion is working!"
I rubbed my forehead, "My head is throbbing."
"It's only 0530, how about you all get back to bed and I'll get Miss Pink here something for her head and a nice dreamless sleep?"
"I think that might be best, Poppy." Albus Dumbledore spoke and within a minute or so I was back asleep again.
31st May
I didn't wake up again until late the next afternoon. I looked down at my pyjamas, they had been changed from my pink ones to ones with blue stripes, my skin was no longer hot and sticky. I looked at the bedside locker and saw a basin with a washcloth and a few towels. My head was no longer in pain, but it was a little bit fuzzy.
"I am not going to hurt her!" someone said behind my curtain, "I vos only vanting to talk to her."
"Kathryn is not to get any visitors today. I've already told her friends; you can't expect me to let you in Mr Krum. She was very distressed, you saw that and now she is asleep. Please leave."
The boy with the funny accent said before leaving, "Her friends are sitting outside, at least tell them how she is." As he opened the door I heard music playing.
An office door closed at the end of the Hospital Wing and I got out of bed. Someone had put some socks on my feet. My legs felt stiff – I hadn't used them in so long. But I otherwise felt well. I took a peek outside the curtain and saw that the coast was clear. I opened the door of the Hospital Wing and saw about six or seven faces staring up at me.
"Hermione?" I looked down at my best friend.
"Yeah, it's me, Kathryn!" she smiled.
I looked at her, feeling confused, scratching my head, "Y- You, last time I saw you, you were… petrified." I poked her in the face, "Are you okay? Harry said that you-"
"I'm fine!" she nodded, "We're all fine. But more importantly, how are you?"
"Me?" I questioned, "I don't know…"
Ginny approached me, "Do you remember who I am?"
I smiled, "Of course I do, I'm not stupid! Ginerva Molly Weasley, born the seventh child to Molly and Arthur Weasley, the only girl, who has a massive crush on-"
"I'm going to stop you right there." She blushed, "What age are you?"
"12." I said nonsensically, "And you're in first year!"
Fred stepped forwards, "Do you know who we are?"
"Why do you keep asking me this? I know you're Fred and he's George. I don't know how I can tell, but I just can."
Ginny rested her head on my shoulder, "I think you and George should date."
"GINNY!" I gasped, going bright red, covering my cheeks with my hands.
"I know that George likes you, why don't you-"
"There you are! Kathryn! I thought I'd lost you!" Madam Pomfery opened the doors to the Hospital Wing, "How are you feeling? Did you have a good sleep?"
I looked at George who was smiling at me, then back to Madam Pomfery, "I think I'm okay."
"Kathryn is 12," Ginny began, "and I'm eleven and you've just cured Hermione of being petrified. We promise we won't bring her anywhere else in the school."
Madam Pomfery nodded, "Thank you, Miss Weasley." She closed the door and left us to it.
"I feel like I've forgotten something…" I said, looking around the school, "Why am I in the hospital wing? I'm not sick… Am I?"
Everyone stared at each other before Ginny took a hold of my arm, "Do you remember our conversation the other day?" she paused for a second, "When we talked about you forgetting some things when you banged your head in the Forbidden Forest? That your name is Kathryn Pink, you are fourteen years old and you are studying here at Hogwarts?"
"No, I'm twelve." I stated, Ginny looked as though she was about to argue, so I assured her, "I am!" I said.
George stepped forwards, "Have you just woken up, Katy?"
"Yes?"
Everyone backed off a little, "Someone grab her coffee." George said.
I gave him a death stare.
"Stop. Doing. That." George cowered away.
I smiled, "Why are you all sitting here?"
"We were waiting for you to wake up, sleeping beauty!" Fred joked, he took a seat back on the floor, "You've been out of it for at least a full day!"
I looked at George, "You look guilty, why do you look guilty, what have you done?"
"The girl can read you like a book." Fred said, "What have you done this time, Georgie?"
George looked at the floor, "She doesn't recognise the song…"
"Magic Works by the Weird Sisters?" Ginny recognised it.
"I don't think I've ever heard this song before." I said, "…Is it significant?"
George continued looking at the floor, "I try and kiss her and she screams. Our song starts playing and she doesn't recognise it." His voice crackled and he looked up at me, tears in his eyes, "This is our song, Katy, you kissed me for the first time when we were dancing to this song."
My chin dropped, "I did?"
George's chin wobbled, "You did. And now you look at me as though none of that has actually happened…" his voice broke, "I need a minute…" he walked down the corridor.
I looked to Ginny, Hermione, Harry and Ron who were sitting on the floor, surrounded by library books, they shrugged their shoulders at me, I then asked, "I love him, don't I?"
Ron was the one to respond, "No matter how much this pains me to admit, but yeah, you do."
I turned on my heels and went after him, in my pyjamas and socks on my feet. At the end of the corridor, I saw George walking up a set of stairs, "GEORGE!" I yelled. A few heads turned, a few fingers pointed, but I didn't care. "I need to talk to you for a second."
George turned and walked towards me, "It's okay, Katy, I deserve this, you wouldn't be in this mess if it wasn't for me taking you out of the common room, I was a jealous wreck and I didn't realise what I had right in front of me. You have no idea how sorry I am…" he stood there and cried, "I love you so much it hurts and I just couldn't bear to think of you with anyone -"
I went with my gut instinct and I kissed him. As I pulled away I saw the look of surprise on George's face, "Sorry…" I said.
"Don't ever be sorry about that!" he couldn't quite believe I had kissed him and quite frankly, neither could I. I wiped away his tears with my fingers. I suddenly felt very hot, but I wasn't embarrassed, this felt right.
I took a hold of his hand and placed it over my beating heart, "I may not remember everything, but even I can't ignore this feeling I have. Right here." I put my hand on top of his, "I may forget your name or the way you look, but I'll never forget how you make me feel."
George wrapped his arms around me and kissed the top of my head, "You're really warm. Do you feel okay?"
"Erm…" I said. The hot feeling turned into feeling warm and clammy, my head was getting sorer by the second.
"I'm taking you back to the hospital wing." He said, putting an arm around me as fatigue quickly took over my body, voices were muffled as George lifted me and set back down on the bed saying, "It came on so fast-"
"She was flu-like all day yesterday, I wasn't keeping her asleep, her body couldn't wake. I just don't understand…" Madam Pomfery said, "Kathryn, I'm going to get you out of these clothes… her temperature is 38.8! And I'm going to get you a potion to make you feel better. George can you help-"
I sat up as much as I could for George to unbutton my pyjamas, my hands were shaking too much. I felt so ill, I felt so cold, yet I was sweating, my head was banging, I was breathing too fast. George called out but I couldn't hear what he said, but I felt someone else's hands on me, the voice sounded like Hermione's. My vision went blurry, too. Something was pressed to my lips and I felt a liquid dribbling down my chin, so I drank as best I could. My body shuddered, I was lowered into the bed and I fell straight into a dreamless sleep.
2nd June
I woke up and everything felt familiar. I looked up at the clock and it read 3am. Turning on the lamp beside me, I picked up my belongings and immediately recognised them, the book I was reading, my diary, a spare pair of my pyjamas. I remembered everything: the argument with George, Dumbledore and Ludo walking past me, Harry's panic, me running down to the Forbidden Forest and then waking up with a terrible headache on the forest floor. But something didn't feel quite right. I felt better, I didn't feel flu-like any longer. Yes, I was angry at George for what he said, I felt vulnerable, I really didn't trust Snape or Moody or Karkaroff but the overriding feeling was that of having forgotten something. The memory charm was still intact.
I hesitated, but I swung my legs out of bed and put my feet into my slippers, grabbing my dressing gown and set off to the Gryffindor Common Room. The Fat Lady was not one bit amused at being woken by me. She opened one eye and admitted me with a grunt. I took the stairs to the boys' dorms and went all the way up to the top and let myself into Fred and George's room. Already knowing which bed was George's, I climbed in beside him and wrapped my arms around him.
George nearly jumped out of his skin, "Merlin's beard! Kathryn! What're you – are you okay?" he sat up, wrapping his arms around me, too, "Are you, you again?"
I nodded, and realising he couldn't see me, and replied, "Yes. I'm fourteen again, I remember the song! I just woke up and…"
"Do you remember who attacked you?" George whispered, looking around at the five 6th years sleeping around him.
"Don't worry about them, they can't hear a thing." I said, stroking his hand, "And no, I can't… I remember running down to the Forest and the next minute I woke up with a terrible headache on the forest floor."
"Did you wake up where you were standing, when you remember the last thing you did?" George rubbed his eyes with his free hand.
I thought about it… "I woke up a few metres away… George, I'm scared. I know a piece of my memory is gone. I saw something I shouldn't have…"
"The main thing you need to focus on is that we have you back now! You have no idea how relieved I am, you were so ill, Madam Pomfery said it was early onset sepsis whatever that is!"
I shrugged my shoulders, "Thanks for your apology, by the way. I didn't know what it was for at the time, but now it makes sense." I said, and George went quiet, "I still think you're an idiot and I have not forgotten what you said to me. Luckily, eight-year-old and twelve-year-old Kathryn can remember your apologies, but I swear George, if you make me feel like that again, you and I are over. I will not stand for you treating me like my parents did. Do I make myself clear?"
"Crystal." He nodded, looking down at his duvet, where my hand was holding his tightly, "Can we start over?"
"Yeah." I said, "On one condition."
He rubbed his thumb on my hand, comfortingly, "Hm?"
"You have to trust me."
"I do trust you, I'm sorry I ever doubted you…" George let out a deep breath, we sat in silence for a minute or so before he spoke again, "Do you erm… want to go sit in the Common Room? I don't imagine it'll go down too well with you being in here, in my bed."
I coughed, laughing, "This scenario may let their minds wander. Perhaps it might be best?" I took my hand off George and I saw my blanket scrunched up on the bed beside him. George had taken it the morning Ange and I soaked the place and he had stolen it and quite happily admitted it. The two of us got out of bed on either side.
I was about to take my blanket back when George scrunched up his face at me, and held out his hand across the bed and said, "Oi. That's mine now."
I put my finger to my lips, I wasn't making him silent any more. I smirked and ran out of his room, laughing. Sitting down in my favourite sofa in front of the fire (which was now extinguished) I wrapped the blanket around myself.
"So you're not even going to share?" George looked outraged, then he looked embarrassed as he admitted, "I liked having it, it smelled like you, it helped me sleep when all the stuff was going on. I sat at your bedside all last night until Madam Pomfery kicked me out, but I had to stay there… When I thought you weren't going to-"
I rested my head on his chest, "I'm okay. We're okay." I smelt the blanket, changing the topic of conversation, "It smells like you now. I'll give it back when it smells of me again, how about that?"
George only looked half convinced, "So did Madam Pomfery discharge you?"
"Er –" I rested my hand beside my head and felt the rising and falling of his chest, "I may have just gotten out of bed and left her to it. She was fast asleep, what did you expect me to do? She always told me that I was one of the worst patients, asking too many questions, bending rules, being too curious. I was just planning on going back to classes in the morning, getting on with my day as though nothing has happened."
"I know this doesn't sound like it's coming from me, but it is, please go to her in the morning and get checked over. I just need to know that you're okay. Let her discharge you, at least."
"You worry too much about me."
"I love you too much."
I rolled my eyes.
"What? It's true! I'm never letting you go again!" George wrapped his arms around me tight, "NEVER!"
