Isaac and Eagle arrived at the AL Yume shortly after departing from the Musashi. Isaac gulped as he took in the massive size of the vessel before him.
"I know I said her vessel is as big as her mothers… but still. And to think that this giant ship is under the command of my daughter… it's almost impossible to imagine." Isaac said as Yume cooed quietly in his arms. Her tiny hands pawed at his shirt as Eagle jumped from the waves onto the flight deck.
"Here we are. AL Yume. Gotta say, she's cleaner than most carriers." Eagle said.
"Well yeah. She hasn't flown anything yet." Isaac spoke.
"That's not what I mean. She doesn't have clutter. There's no skirt around the flight deck for her anti-air. There's no netting poles strapped to the side to catch runaway planes. She's got her flight deck and elevators. She has her island, but that's about it." Eagle said.
"You know… now that you say that, you have a point. Her hull is unlike anything we currently have fielded." Isaac said as he looked to Eagle.
"Could you radio Lizzy and have her come here? She has experience with this vessel." Isaac asked.
"Of course." Eagle said as she radioed across the fleet.
A few minutes later, Lizzy jumped onto the flight deck of the AL Yume.
"I am here, my king." Lizzy said with a chuckle.
"My king?" Eagle asked as she looked at Isaac.
"Believe me… I tried to convince her not to call me that." Isaac said as he shifted Yume in his arms.
"You like it, deep down you know you do." Lizzy said as she nudged Isaac's side.
"So, why did I radio her?" Eagle asked.
"Right. Lizzy, you said Yume's vessel comes from our future… right?" Isaac asked.
"That is correct. This hull specifically comes from the year 2015. Is there things you want to know? I have a few aspects of this design committed to memory." Lizzy said.
"Yeah… this thing's massive. What did you call it before? You said it wasn't an aircraft carrier." Isaac said.
"Correct. The proper designation for this vessel is an Izumo class Multipurpose Destroyer. But in all reality it is a satin veil meant to throw off Japan's neighbors. For all intents and purposes, this is an aircraft carrier." Lizzy said.
"Why all the subterfuge?" Isaac asked.
"Because… should the Sirens not have invaded this timeline, Japan would have been forced to sign a treaty that removed their ability to have an offensive military. Put simply, they would have had to scuttle all remaining carriers and limit the size of their Navy to fit the requirements of the treaty, lest they incur the wrath of the Union again. But, seventy-five years is a long time to stick to that doctrine. And it also allows for huge leaps in technology." Lizzy said, taking a moment for Isaac to wrap his head around it.
"So… Japan would have been forced to sink their own navy?" Isaac asked.
"Precisely. But as I said, time and technology changed all that by the mid 2010's. Helicopters, automated point defense, and of course the political climate all pushed Japan to create vessels known as multipurpose destroyers. But in all reality, they were going to use them as carriers for helicopters. Then the Union unveiled a super high tech fighter that could take off and land on such a short runway, so Japan decided then that they would cast off the veil and allow the world to see the Izumo class for what they were." Lizzy explained.
"Short?! This thing's nearly as big as Shinano and Richthofen!" Isaac cried.
Yume giggled softly.
"Well… yeah. But Isaac… you have to realize that the war that your timeline just fought… that was the end of prop planes. The last propeller plane would have been phased out in about twenty or so years. Barring a few notable exceptions. The skies would be dominated by jet aircraft." Lizzy said.
Isaac sat on the flight deck and held his head for a moment.
"Are you okay?" Eagle asked as she and Lizzy knelt next to him.
"So… how big did they get?" Isaac asked.
Lizzy's face contorted into a look of discomfort.
"Just over 1,100 feet. 337 meters." Lizzy said hesitantly.
"An extra two hundred feet?! You could launch a standard load B-25 with that much room!" Isaac exclaimed as Yume gripped his shirt.
"Look. What's important is that Yume being in this time period is something really unique. She can be fielded as an Aircraft carrier without issue since her vessel is nearly as big as her mothers." Lizzy said.
"And what about you?!" Isaac asked.
"Well… I don't know. My vessel is 280 meters or 920 feet long. I'll have to modify her slightly to remove the ski jump since I do not believe I can field my proper fighters in this era." Lizzy said.
"Ski jump?" Isaac asked.
"It helps launch planes into the air that use a Short take off and vertical landing system. Not important since I won't be able to show you them." Lizzy said.
"Well… Vengeance said her aircraft can do that… the Short takeoff thing." Isaac said.
"Did she now? Well, maybe I might field those instead. They don't sound too different from the Lightning B." Lizzy pondered.
"We're getting sidetracked. Let's explore this vessel of the future." Isaac said as the two girls helped him to his feet and strolled inside the island to begin their tour.
Once inside, the four of them were met with a surprise.
"Wow… Yume really thinks highly of her Papa." Eagle and Lizzy said in unison as they looked ahead at a small shrine right inside the entrance to the island.
A small steel cabinet stood bolted to the wall, secured from movement by several steel straps. Inside the cabinet was a picture of Isaac in an ornate frame. Surrounding the picture were several bouquets of flowers. Under the picture was a plaque that had words painted in gold paint.
"I love my papa."
Isaac chuckled as he looked at Yume.
"You're definitely a daddy's girl." Isaac said as he poked Yume's cheek, earning him a giggle for his efforts.
"It's a cute little touch of personalization if I must say." Lizzy said as she walked over and took a look at the picture. Isaac looked down to see Yume watching her closely.
"I think she takes a decent amount of pride in that little portrait. I wouldn't touch it." Isaac said.
"I guess not." Lizzy said as she smiled at Yume.
"You really love your papa, don't you?" Lizzy asked.
Yume nodded softly as her hands gripped Isaac's shirt more.
"I'd say papa is gonna be the safest person ever once you grow up." Eagle said with a giggle.
"Alright, ladies. Let's get this tour under way. I want to see everything I can." Isaac said as a pair of green dragonflies appeared in front of the group. Buzzing around them for a few seconds, everyone's eyes were drawn to them.
"I guess Yume is gonna guide us." Lizzy said as the dragonflies slowly buzzed down the hallway towards the bridge.
"Bridge first I guess." Isaac said as they all followed.
A few minutes of walking later, Isaac found himself on the bridge of the AL Yume.
"What the…" Isaac said as he was bombarded with a room full of screens. The center of the room had the typical ship controls and steering wheel, but the rest of the room was the equivalent of an alien spaceship.
"Are we sure this is an aircraft carrier?" Isaac asked as Lizzy took point.
"Yes. This is the command bridge. These screens tell you everything you need to know. From the status of the vessel to everything being picked up by radar." Lizzy explained.
"How am I supposed to process all of this in the middle of a fight?!" Isaac cried.
"You may have to have a few members of the fleet help you with this… or just wait until Yume grows up to the point where she can talk to you in such a way that she can process it for you." Lizzy suggested.
"This is insane…" Isaac said as he sat in the Captain's chair.
"Papa…okay?" Yume squeaked softly.
Isaac took a breath and smiled.
"Yeah, Yume… Papa's okay. Just feeling a bit overwhelmed." Isaac said as he rubbed his head.
Yume unfurled her tails and used them to gently bat at Isaac's chest, making small thumping sounds as she did so.
"Yume, that tickles." Isaac said with a smile.
Yume giggled as she pulled herself closer to him, prompting him to rub her head between her ears.
"Alright… where to next, Yume?" Isaac asked as the dragonflies appeared again, buzzing around Isaac's head before heading down the hall towards a stairwell. Isaac, Lizzy and Eagle all followed closely behind.
A bit longer of a walk found them inside Yume's Hanger deck.
"Woah…." Isaac said as he looked through the massive room full of workshop equipment, fuel tanks and pipes.
"How many fighters do you think she can fit here?" Eagle asked, seemingly amazed at the sheer amount of space.
"Well… if she is going to be using Zeroes, I would have to say somewhere in the realm of forty." Lizzy said.
"Only forty?" Isaac asked.
"Yes. She will need to have room for her Helicopters. So having room in here will be paramount." Lizzy said.
"I still can't wrap my head around these so-called Helicopters. You mean to tell me that they have wings that spin to produce flight as opposed to the air going under the wings?" Isaac asked.
"Yes. Perhaps when you see it in action you will understand it a bit better. But Yume will be able to field helicopters just like me." Lizzy said.
Isaac scratched his head and shrugged.
"Oh well. I guess I will have to wait and see." Isaac said as the dragonflies appeared again, beckoning them to an elevator in the hanger deck.
"I guess we're going down." Isaac said as the three of them all piled into the elevator. Without pressing a button, the door closed and the elevator began to descend into the depths of the ship.
"Feels like we're heading towards the engines." Isaac said.
"You'd be correct. This might be something you can actually understand, Isaac." Lizzy said, poking his side.
"I'm experiencing a ship from nearly seventy years in the future. Anyone would be confused beyond reason." Isaac shot back.
"Understandable I guess. Oh, just a heads up, Yume's vessel is driven by gas turbines, not steam turbines." Lizzy warned.
"So… She uses combustion instead of expansion to turn the turbines?" Isaac asked.
"Correct. Her engines will use combustible fuel to create hot gasses to turn the turbines. This is unlike say… Laffey who uses steam from her boilers to turn the turbines." Lizzy said.
"Oh that should be relatively simple to fix. See… this is something I can make sense of." Isaac said as the elevator doors opened into the lower depths of the vessel.
The dragonflies made their way down the long corridors until they reached the engine rooms.
Isaac's eyes went wide when he saw the size and scope of the engines.
"Woah." Isaac said as he took it all in.
"Pretty impressive, huh?" Lizzy asked.
"It's so… clean." Isaac said as he noted pristine steel walls and polished engine housings.
"Well, she hasn't been running the engines much since her vessel appeared. It makes sense that they'd still look brand new." Eagle commented.
Isaac handed Yume to Lizzy as he took to exploring the engines.
Lizzy and Eagle watched as Isaac fiddled with the housings of the engines and opened random panels to access the gauges and dials.
"Are you having fun, Honey?" Eagles called.
"This is amazing! To think that they haven't changed all too much in seventy years! Even I can work on these!" Isaac said happily as Yume cooed happily.
"Yume seems to enjoy that idea." Lizzy called out.
Isaac's laugh was heard in return.
"I can at least teach her how to maintain her engines. I won't be of much use until I learn how her radar systems work… but the mechanical stuff I can do." Isaac said as he made his way back up to the girls, wiping his greased hands on his shirt.
"Even in a clean room like this, you managed to get dirty…" Lizzy said as Eagle handed Isaac a towel.
"Well, engines are still dirty, no matter what era they're from." Isaac said as he wiped his hands and collected Yume from Lizzy.
"Alright Yume. I think we've seen everything we needed to. Can you take us back up?" Isaac asked as the dragonflies appeared again. Isaac and the others were led back to the elevator and taken back up to the hanger deck. After a short walk, they were all back on the flight deck looking out over the fleet.
"That was exciting!" Eagle said as she turned back to the island they had emerged from.
"Agreed. To think my daughter commanded something so advanced." Isaac said as he rubbed Yume's head. Her lack of noise led him to look closer at her face, only to find that she had fallen asleep on the walk back.
Isaac smiled.
"She may be a daddy's girl… but she is so much like her mother." Isaac said earning a laugh from Lizzy and Eagle as they made their way onto the waves towards the Norfolk.
