Gneisenau reached the end of a long darkened hallway. The sounds of battle above continued to rage on as the fleet's engagement was split between the advancing drone fleet and the remaining land emplacements. Cole was hot on her heels, keeping an eye behind them to make sure they hadn't been spotted.
"Gneisenau, we need to hurry. We don't know who could still be down here." Cole whispered.
"That's fine…" Gneisenau spoke in her much softer tone. Cole looked at her until he realized that she was pointing at a sign above a seemingly barren wall.
"Holding cell 1A? This is just a wall." Cole said, thoroughly confused.
"Look at the stones." Gneisenau said as she pointed to the wall.
Before them sat a stone wall, typical of cellars. Large stones held together with concrete to seal any gaps in the stone. In the center of the wall was a strange sight. A section of bricks in the shape of a doorway matching all of the other doors they had passed.
"They bricked this door over… sealing whatever was inside." Cole said softly.
"And this is the only cell we haven't checked… If that man is to be believed… Scharnhorst is in here." Gneisenau said as she took her fist and wound up. Cole jumped back just in time to see Gneisenau's fist impact the brick wall, blowing a chunk out of it with relative ease. Turning her hand, and pouring all of her strength into her arms, Gneisenau gripped the interior wall of the bricks and pulled outward, causing the whole section of bricks to collapse at her feet.
"Mobile demolition crew…" Cole commented.
"I am a battleship, Cole Spirits. Destruction is my purpose." Gneisenau spoke calmly as she shook her hand. Cole could hear joints popping as she loosened up her hand for what was to come.
Before them now stood a door very similar to the rest of the cells, however, the door was welded shut, another layer meant to permanently entomb the inhabitant. A steel plate was welded over the lock body and the barred window, in addition to the entire door being welded to the frame.
"Should I see if I can find a torch to melt some of the steel?" Cole asked as he did a quick scan of the immediate area.
"No need. I can grip the bars… I will tear this damn door out of the foundation." Gneisenau growled as she realized that this was the final obstacle between her and whoever was on the other side, hopefully her sister.
Gneisenau's fingers locked around the metal bars of the door and she tensed her back.
"You may wish to seek cover, Cole Spirits." Gneisenau said as Cole backed up a few feet to give her some space.
"It's your show." Cole said as he watched the slender form of Gneisenau perform a feat of strength that would make most men weak in the knees. In a single pull, Gneisenau used every possible muscle to rip the door, frame and all, from the rocks holding it in place. Once the door was free, Gneisenau tossed it to the side, where it fell to the ground with an ear splitting crash.
Cole was the first to recover as Gneisenau took a few seconds to wave the dust from her eyes.
"There's someone in there!" Cole said as he ran past Gneisenau to arrive within the cell.
Chained to the wall via her arms, legs, neck, and torso, was a woman who looked remarkably similar to Gneisenau. Her eyes were covered in dried blood to the point where they could not be opened. Massive ugly purple bruises covered her body and yellow patches indicated bruises that had healed. Several finger nails had been forcefully removed from each hand, most likely to torture without cause. The woman's clothes were nothing but shreds of cloth that did nothing to hide any of her privates. Cole looked around the cell to see blotches of dried blood, indicating that in addition to the beatings of her body, the woman had been hit in the face enough to make her bleed.
It was then that Gneisenau walked through the hole in the wall.
Cole tensed up hearing the battleship sigh softly.
"Scharnhorst?" Gneisenau asked softly as she walked up to the woman and knelt down before placing her hand on the woman's cheek.
"Scharnhorst." Gneisenau repeated.
Cole walked over and put his ear next to the woman's chest.
"She has a pulse." Cole said softly.
"Scharnhorst, can you hear me?" Gneisenau asked as she placed her other hand on the woman's opposite cheek.
"Who… Who's there? Please… just let me die." The woman spoke.
Gneisenau was taken aback. Never before had her sister held so little optimism.
"It's me, Gneisenau. Your sister." Gneisenau spoke.
"Who am I kidding… they deafened me… I wouldn't be able to hear you talking anyway." The woman spoke as Gneisenau's rage began to bubble.
Ripping the arm of his uniform, Cole soaked the fabric in water from his canteen before working on cleaning the blood from the woman's eyes.
"What are you doing? Who's there? What's going on?" The woman asked in rapid succession as she freaked out trying to figure out what torture she would have to endure next.
Moments later, Cole had managed to get the blood wiped away from her eyes, allowing her to slowly open them.
The woman gasped upon seeing Gneisenau.
"Si…ster?" Scharnhorst asked.
Gneisenau nodded.
"I… I can't hear anything… but it's really you, right?" Scharnhorst asked.
Gneisenau nodded again as she used her hand to wipe away a single tear.
"Let's get her back to the fleet. We can't leave her like this… maybe there's something we can do to help with her hearing." Cole said.
"She will have to undergo severe treatment back in Gibraltar. But I think she'll be just fine." Gneisenau said as she ripped the chains that held her sister from the wall.
Before Scharnhorst could fall, Cole caught her and eased the Ironblood battleship onto his back.
"Let's get her out of here before we're found out." Cole said as Gneisenau held him in place for a moment.
"I have to return this." Gneisenau said as she reached into her blouse and pulled out Scharnhorst's eyepatch. Scharnhorst smiled upon seeing it. She allowed the eyepatch to be tied behind her head, giving her some comfort that Gneisenau did not see her as unrecoverable.
"Let me go first… I'll kill any motherfucker I find." Gneisenau spoke bitterly as she summoned her rigging.
At the end of the hall, they ran into Natalie, who had come into the building to find them.
"We need to leave. I just heard over one of the radio's that the Admiral has issued a withdrawal. It seems Brooklyn has made it back with the documents." Natalie said.
"Gotcha, let's move." Cole said as the four of them began running for the exit.
