Chapter 31

When Kara and J'onn arrived at GCPD headquarters, they immediately realized that there was a mass panic. Officers of the law were often faced with terrible situations and there would be a level of urgency, but this was not that. Cries of fear and unusual movements in the time of a crisis were not what she was expecting to find. The building did indeed have a hole in it, but the gunshots were officers shooting at whatever was confronting them, not actual suspects. With bullets whizzing around, innocent bystanders and people in nearby buildings could be hurt or killed.

"Stay back!" Kara warned J'onn and he gave her a look.

"They used the Fear Toxin. I have no idea what it will do to you but I'm guessing nothing good," she quickly explained. Then she pressed her comms in her ear and hoped someone was listening.

"GCPD headquarters has been doused with Fear Toxin! We need oxygen masks and large quantities of the antidote!" She announced.

"We'll see what we can do, but I know that we don't have enough antidote for all those people," Kate responded to her.

"We have to knock these people unconscious then. There is no way to tell what they are seeing and the longer they stay awake, the more chance we have of losing them," Kara said.

"Maybe I can break into their fear?" J'onn knew that the Martian mind had the ability to overcome the blocks another mind might be experiencing, even a chemical induced issue.

"Can you do it en masse?" Kara was concerned that he'd hurt himself and she wasn't about to lose him.

"I've never tried it before," he admitted. Kate broke into their conversation,

"We're at least five minutes out with those oxygen masks. Luke only has five doses of the antidote and we can't produce enough in time to save everyone there."

"I want everyone to stay back then. I'm going to try something Barry taught me," Kara told them. Kate didn't like the sound of that, but Barry was the fastest man alive. Kara was more than capable of attempting something he'd shown her, even if Crisis had boosted his speed past the blonde's own.

"Be careful," Kate cautioned. J'onn echoed the same sentiment as Kara double tapped the left cape point on her suit and her helmet materialized. She lowered herself to about two feet above the pavement. She began flying around GCPD headquarters in a tight circle.

"What is she doing Papa Bear?" Kate wanted to know.

"She's creating a vortex. It will suck any remnants of the Fear Toxin away from the building, but it might also cause the broken bits of building and people to get sucked into it," he was concerned and was watching for people to go flying out of the tornado.

"They're going to die anyway if we can't get that toxin out of their systems. We're almost to you," Kate let him know. No one liked this plan but there wasn't time to try and come up with another one.

Kara, on the other hand, could feel her suit adjusting to her speed. She had complete faith in Brainy's technology, but it doesn't mean the voice in the back of her head didn't worry. She just needed to last another minute and then she hoped that the toxin would no longer be affecting the police officers. With any luck, they would be knocked unconscious by her sucking the oxygen out of the building as well.

"She's slowing down," J'onn was concerned what would happen next. It was only a small fraction of her speed, but the Martian could tell that she wasn't at one hundred percent. The vortex finally lifted off the ground and headed up and away from the building. J'onn saw Kara stop and he was glad to see that she wasn't any worse for wear. Assuming it was safe, he flew down to check on her.

"It worked!" Kara exclaimed as she removed her helmet. The sound of gunfire had stopped and J'onn did not feel anything coming over him, indicating that the gas was most likely gone from the exterior.

"Out here it did. Be glad that you have those nanites in your suit. I half expected to find bits of your suit missing," J'onn smiled. He knew that she had to be going at least Mach four to make that work and the nanites had their work cut out for them, especially since she was wearing her helmet.

"We have to check inside," Kara told him. She used her X-ray vision to look and see that everyone inside was not on their feet but lying down. The sounds of sirens were in the distance. Back up was on its way but Kate and Nyssa beat them to it.

"Masks!" Kate tossed one to J'onn. The brunette and Nyssa already had theirs on. Kara put her helmet back up and the group entered the building through the hole the explosion caused.

"My helmet is getting clear readings," Kara announced to them as they moved around the structure, checking for pulses and injuries as they went.

"Pull off your masks," Kate said. They all removed their gear and set them down so they could get a clearer look at the situation.

"We've got a lot of wounded," Nyssa didn't like the look of some of the injuries.

"More than a few dead," J'onn shook his head.

"We have to find these guys," Kate was frustrated. They were always a step behind.

"They've made their splash. They'll go to ground now," Nyssa reminded them.

"We have to make sure that all of the Fear Toxin is out of everyone here. We'll fight another day," Kara spoke up.

"Will Mary have another day?" Kate voiced her concern over her sister. Mary had helped Pike and his associates to pull this off. They no longer had a use for her. If this Natasha was truly like Tatiana, Mary would be made a spectacle of, and she would not be alive at the end of it.

"Check in with Luke. See if he can get a lab to help synthesize a large batch of antidote," Kara told her friend. Kate took off from the building.

"She may be right," Nyssa told Kara.

"I know and that is what worries me," the blonde admitted.
