16th Lieutenant: So, welcome back to the TARDIS, the current TARDIS.

In this chapter, we follow my 11th incarnation on a quest to compile her extensive research on regeneration into a thesis. Having spent centuries exploring time and space, the Lieutenant's knowledge and experiences have culminated in a groundbreaking contribution to the field. With her thesis completed, she sets her sights on Gallifrey, the home of the Time Lord Academy.

Upon her arrival, the Lieutenant is filled with anticipation and nerves as she navigates the grand corridors of the Academy. Surrounded by the vast wealth of knowledge in the Archival Repository, she presents her thesis to a panel of esteemed Time Lord scholars. With eloquence and passion, she delves into the complexities of regeneration, presenting innovative perspectives and thorough research. Impressed by her work, the panel engages in a rigorous examination and awards her the highest accolade—a Doctor of Philosophy in Regeneration.

With this newfound title, I became a respected academic and a part-time lecturer in Regeneration at the Academy. She embraces her role, mentoring young Time Lord minds and pushing the boundaries of Regeneration research. Despite the celebration and recognition, the Lieutenant remains humble, recognizing that her journey of discovery has only just begun.

In this incarnation, I repeated an earlier face, for the second time.

11th Lieutenant: The Lieutenant strolled around her console, checking the instruments and readings, she knew what they said without checking, she was just ensuring nothing was going wrong. It didn't seem to happen as often in recent lives as it had when she'd inherited it, maybe she was experienced by now, but just in case, she made sure everything was normal. She was on course for Gallifrey.

Today was the day she submitted her thesis in Regeneration and presented it. In all her endeavours across time and space, all the evil she had faced and she never remembered being as nervous as she was now.

The Lieutenant stood back a bit from the console, glancing between her notes and the instruments on the console. Eventually, she realised that no more preparation and stress was going to make a difference by now. What was going to happen would happen. She laid her notes down on one of the console panels and strode around to the navigation panel and gave it a thump and then yanked the Master Lever.

The TARDIS materialised in the halls of the Academy on Gallifrey.

The Lieutenant activated the scanner and looked around her surroundings. As she did, she suddenly felt an overwhelming sense of confidence. She shut off the scanner and tidied herself up a bit in the reflection of the Time Rotor before activating the door control and striding to the door and out of the TARDIS. She pushed the door shut after her.

The Lieutenant crept forward slowly. She was told she would be called on when the examiners were ready for her. She had a time travelling watch which adjusted to each place she travelled to and she checked it now to ensure she was in the right place and on time. She was just a bit early.

The Lieutenant did a slow twirl, taking in her surroundings. In about 2,500 years, the place had barely changed. It felt so strange to be back.

'Lieutenant?' called a voice from inside a nearby lecture theatre.

The Lieutenant drew a deep breath and composed herself. 'Present,' she said, walking into the lecture theatre and up to the platform, preparing her papers.

'Welcome, Lieutenant,' said one of the examiners, there were two of them, both men.

'Thank you,' said the Lieutenant.

'Are you nervous?' asked the other examiner.

'I was until about ten minutes ago, then I started to relax,' said the Lieutenant.

'Exactly, that's the spirit. We'll try to make you feel relaxed. We have both read your thesis, we found it intriguing and we are excited to see you present it, so please don't be nervous,' he smiled.

'Thank you,' the Lieutenant smiled back.

'Can we just get your name, please, we know it, but just to tick a box, we need to hear you say it,' said one of the examiners.

'The Lieutenant,' said the Lieutenant.

'Student number, please,' said the same examiner.

'202387654,' said the Lieutenant.

'OK, Lieutenant, thank you, we are ready to hear your presentation when you are ready,' said the same examiner.

'Thank you,' said the Lieutenant, taking a breath and clicking a clicker, bringing a projected image to life.

The examiners looked up at the image and sat back. They were relaxed, this put the Lieutenant at ease.

As the lecture hall erupted as applause, the two examiners looked each other directly in the eyes and grinned, turning their gaze to the Lieutenant and applauding her.

After the applause, one of the examiners grinned at the Lieutenant and adjusted his position in his seat. 'Now that you're finished,' he said, 'how do you feel?'

'My head is a bit fried, but I am glad it's over,' said the Lieutenant.

'Of course, and that's natural,' said the other examiner. 'Very well done, we've not heard the likes of that all day and we've not had an applause quite like that either. The concept, for me, of a newly-regenerated Time Lord being responsible was very interesting to me.'

'Yeah, I agree,' said his colleague, 'it's interesting, also, how something so simple, that we both have done, and you have done, we know, and many of us in this lecture hall have done, can be so complicated. Well, now, we have a few questions for you about the thesis, and we're hoping this will be more of a discussion and that you and your audience will lead it more than us. Would anyone like to start us off?' he asked, as his eye met another person's eye, who slightly nodded. 'Please, take it away.'

The Lieutenant mulled it over for a few seconds in her mind. 'Oh, yes!' exclaimed the examiner, turning back to the Lieutenant.

When the appluase ended, one of the examiners spoke. 'With most other presentations, we have asked for some time to compare and contrast notes in coming up with a grade and decision on each candidate's conferring but I really don't think we need to in this case, Lieutenant, we were very interested in the submitted thesis, we thoroughly enjoyed the presentation, which was extremely interesting and we were very delighted with the response you got and we also marvelled in that joy with and for you, we are only two happy to confer upon you here, now, this minute, the title of Doctor of Philosophy of Regeneration. Congratulations, Lieutenant,' he said, as the lecture hall erupted in applause once more, giving her a standing ovation.

The Lieutenant grinned for the first time since arriving and waved as she left the lecture hall and returned to her TARDIS. She glanced over her notes once more to see if she had left anything out. She was glad to see she had not. Then she dumped her notes, no longer needing them and glad to see the back of them. She pulled the Master Lever.

The TARDIS dematerialised.

As time passed, the popularity of the Lieutenant's PhD thesis became extremely evident. The Academy took her on as a lecturer in Regeneration almost immediately.

The Lieutenant's research become legendary, drawing crowds of eager students who were fascinated by the mysteries of transformation and renewal.
