Summary:

Fox Mulder had spent a life time chasing after the truth. Now there was only one truth he was chasing and he wasn't going to let anything stand in his way.

Writer Notes:

Inspired by the beginning of S11 E1.

I loved when the doctor actually called for Mulder by name. I can imagine he waited years for that.

Some dialogue is used from the X-Files. All characters belong to CC. I just borrow them.

Mulder found her unconscious on their basement office floor. Seeing her lie there was too much to bear and he had to catch his breath. He rushed to her side, fearing the worst he checked for a pulse. The beating of her heart pulsated against his finger and he had a fleeting moment of relief. Hands shaking, he pulled out his cell phone and dialed 911.

"Scully, sweetheart , can you hear me.. Scully"

He was on his knees holding her hand when what seemed like an eternity, the paramedics arrived, Skinner in tow.

We should have never come back. Mulder thought.

There was blood coming from the corner of her mouth, "What's going on? Why is she bleeding?" Not asking, demanding.

"Sir, it looks like she had a seizure, she bit her tongue. we need to get her to the hospital quickly."

The paramedic continued to assess Scully, "Has she had seizures before? Does she take meds for anything?"

"No..no. She's perfectly healthy. She's a doctor. She would've told me." He says as a matter of fact.

Mulder knew that while at the moment they weren't technically together, he was still her confidant and if anything was wrong, he would be the first to know. He was given the responsibility early on before her abduction when he was the witness for her Advance Directive and he was the first to know when she was diagnosed with cancer. She trusted him and he trusted her. In fact, she was the only one he trusted.

Nothing would ever change that.

The paramedics loaded her up on the gurney and carried her out of the office. Mulder quickly followed behind them and Skinner insisted on riding with him. Mulder didn't have the mental band width to argue with Skinner and begrudgingly agreed. Mulder's relationship with Skinner had always been on shaky ground. He didn't quite understand Skinner's role when it came to certain aspects of their work and often questioned where his loyalties lied.

At the hospital the gravity and the familiarity of the situation had him on edge. He couldn't stand still, agitated at every moment that passed, not knowing what was going on. He paced the hallway as he considered all the possible scenarios in his head.

He snapped at Skinner for suggesting he take a break and leave, as if he would even consider leaving now. In the past, he would have left and he had left, many times. He had set out to find answers, his relentless need to search for the truth by doing something, anything instead of waiting.

But now, waiting was all he had, he made an oath to himself, he would wait for her in everything. She was his quest now, she was his truth . And now, he was faced with the uncertain reality that he might lose the only truth that matters, his Scully.

He suddenly felt sick.

A petite doctor stepped into the hallway, "Is one of you Fox Mulder?"

Mulder stepped forward. Years of being denied access and information and now his name was called. No one else's. So many years of asking doctors only to be asked back,

Are you the husband?

Are you a family member?

His response was always no and their response was always; Sorry, we can only release information to a family member or spouse.

To the outside world, they were nothing more than coworkers, colleagues with badges, FBI partners. But partners to Fox Mulder and Dana Scully meant so much more, it went deeper than spouse and reached far beyond family member.

Scully was his soulmate

The rejection over time would leave him feeling helpless and it had fueled his need to leave and search for the truth. A truth that once cost him his sanity, his Scully, and his son.

But not anymore, that all changed.

Now he wouldn't have to convince the doctor of his rank in Scully's life. It was there on paper a legality that gained him full access and he no longer had to take a seat and wait.

Mulder spoke up,

"Is she going to be okay?"

The doctor spoke directly to Mulder "We've done a series of tests."

"Can you answer my question?"

He demanded to speak to her, to his Scully. He needed to see her. It was the only thing on his mind. He was relentless and the doctor finally gave in.

Scully was still unconscious, when he walked into her hospital room. His legs felt weak, but he moved them nonetheless. And when he reached her bedside he placed her hand in his.

The doctor tried to remind him that Scully needed her rest, a nice way of asking him to leave.

He was not leaving.

"I'm sure that's what she needs, but I'm going to stay here."

The doctor turned to Skinner as if to ask for backup. Skinner called Mulder over, leading him outside Scully's room. He tried to convince him to run down a hunch he had about a message in the brain scans the doctor shared with them, Mulder dismissed him. Annoyed that he would take him away from Scully's side for this nonsense.

He was not leaving.

Finally, Mulder finished the conversation. "Then You go look Skinner, where I'm needed is in there."

He turned around and left Skinner and left the chase.

The only thing he would be chasing is the realization that Scully was all he needed and he wasn't about to leave her, not this time, not anymore.

He walked back into her room and slid a chair next to her bed. He sat down and waited for her to wake up.

He would wait. Wait for her. Wait forever if he had too.
