The Distance Between Us

Chapter 1: Camp Arifjan

Genevieve awoke in the strange room; she became frightened when she didn't recognize anything as it was vastly different from what she had grown accustomed to. After a few moments, her brain registered that this was a hospital room and from what she could see, everything was in English which meant she was most likely in an American-owned/run hospital and not Middle Eastern. She scanned the room, trying to gather as much information as possible, something her husband and brother had tried to instill in her over the years.

She saw her room had a window and judging by the amount of light that was coming in it had to be sometime in the afternoon, so that answered one question. She saw a whiteboard next to her bed that had her caretaker's name on it, along with the date! It read that today was August 10th, well she assumed that was correct as health care staff didn't always remember to change the date*. 'If today is really August 10th, then I've been missing for over a year! Question two answered' Genevieve thought to herself. She then took notice of her physical state; she was hooked up to an IV pump, whose alarm was currently going off, and figured that was what had woken her up. Glaring at the annoying machine she sat up, reached over, and silenced the alarm, 'These are exactly like the ones we use in the veterinary field. Probably just as temperamental as well!' Genevieve noticed her other arm was in a sling, resting against her stomach, she wriggled her fingers to confirm that her hand still worked. It was then she noticed the same hand had stitches on her palm, she figured that was from where the knife had slashed her when she had put her hand out in self-defense. However, before Genevieve could continue assessing her injuries, the door opened and a young woman in a light blue hijab, that showed her light-colored skin with green eyes entered, gasping in surprise when she realized Genevieve was awake, rushing over to her side.

"It's so good to see you are awake! How do you feel, are you in any pain? How long have you been awake?" The young woman asked as she started to get vitals on Genevieve.

"Where am I? I mean, I know I'm in a hospital, but I just don't know where. Can you tell me, Noora?" Genevieve asked as she read the name embroidered on the scrub top. 'She looks so young; she can't be a day over thirty!' Genevieve thought.

"You're in Camp Arifjan's hospital, in Kuwait, and today is August 10th. You've been unconscious for a few days ever since Corporal Parkins found you behind one of the barracks. Can you tell me your name, or where you're from, or any personal information like that?" Noora replied as she logged the vitals she had taken from Genevieve on the computer.

"My name is Genevieve Charlotte Gisborne, and I've been apparently missing for over a year if today is really August 10th, and if I am where you say I am, well I'm a long way from home. My husband is Sir. Guy Gisborne of the US Air Force, do you happen to know if any Air Force members are stationed here? I'd like to find my husband and tell him I am ok."

Noora inputted this information into the system as well before replying "We have several different branches stationed here currently, I'll see what I can find out. I can't make any promises though. I need to go let the doctor on duty know that you are awake, I'll be back with him soon." Noora stated as she logged out of the computer, got up, and left the room.

As Genevieve was waiting for the doctor and Noora to come back, she mulled over the fact that she had been missing for over a year! Her husband, friends, and family must be sick with worry, she hoped that she would be able to contact them soon and put their fears at ease. She knew Guy would have been put in an awkward position of worrying about his wife, but still having to focus on any mission or missions that the Air Force gave him during her absence; she couldn't imagine how hard that was on him. Thankfully Guy's Master Sergeant, Arthur, and his fellow Airmen would have been there to make sure he didn't do anything rash and to support him the best they could.

A knock on her door startled Genevieve out of her musings, and before she could give a reply, the door opened, and a middle-aged man walked in with Noora behind him. "Mrs. Gisborne? My name is Dr. Kumar and I'm the doctor on duty today, I'm glad to see you are awake." He said, pulling up the rolling stool close to her bed and sitting on it before continuing.

"How are you feeling?" He asked. Judging by his accent and last name, Genevieve figured he was from somewhere in India. "It seems you've been through quite the ordeal, given the state you were found in and your injuries." He continued gesturing towards her arm.

"I feel ok, a little sore, but that's to be expected with everything I've been through" Genevieve shrugged, not really worried about how she felt physically at this point. "I'd really like to get in touch with my husband if that's possible Dr. Kumar, to let him know I'm safe." She explained.

Dr. Kumar nodded in agreement, "I don't see why you couldn't try and contact your husband after Grace, from the Department of the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, or OSI as we say around here talks to you, it is just standard procedure anytime a service member or a member of their family is returned after missing, for any length of time. However, I do need to ask you some serious medical questions and if you'd prefer a female doctor, I will take no offense." He paused for a moment to give Genevieve time to respond.

"I am fine with you asking your questions," Genevieve responded truthfully, as she had a hunch what questions he was alluding to.

"I need to know if you were sexually abused in any way while being held captive. I understand it might be not easy to talk about, and again if you want to talk with a female doctor that is understandable. I need to know so that I may treat you properly." Dr. Kumar continued.

"I was not abused sexually in any way shape or form, surprisingly. As I'm sure you've seen, they tortured me in other ways. They dislocated my fingers, which I was able to push back into place, and burned me with a hot iron many times as I'm sure you also saw. They also tended to forget, quite often, that I needed to be fed and given water. I'm also pretty sure they broke a few ribs after a particularly rough beating when I wouldn't tell them the information they wanted." Genevieve replied, shuddering at the nasty memory of that beating.

"I did see the healed ribs on your x-rays, they may give you some trouble now and then as they did not heal properly. However, there really isn't much we can do other than pain management at this point, unfortunately. Your shoulder should heal without issue as it seemed to be a more recent injury and we were able to treat it appropriately. For your fingers—" Dr. Kumar was interrupted by a knock on the door followed by a tall, fair-skinned woman with blonde hair that was pulled back into a bun, and dressed in Army Greens, entering the room.

"Mrs. Gisborne? I am Grace, from the Department of the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, we provide independent protection service operations among other things such as violence against people, and any other illegal activity that undermines the mission of the Air Force, Space Force, or the DoD. I oversee this Army bases office, and I won't waste anyone's time by beating around the bush; Dr. Kumar, Noora, if you will please excuse us I need to question Mrs. Gisborne alone." The woman stated in a tone that left no question of who was in charge.

"I will be back later to check on you. If you need anything before then, press the call button on the side of your bed, and a nurse will come and take care of you." Dr. Kumar stated as he and Noora left the room.
