Frisk awoke on a bed of golden flowers. They looked up into the single ray of light that illuminated the area. They were confused. How did they survive that fall? And how were they to get out of here? And where was 'here'?
They stood up and walked around and spotted an archway. They walked through it and found what looked like a smiling flower in a different room.
"Howdy!" it said, startling Frisk. "I'm Flowey. Flowey the Flower!" It looked over Frisk with that same smile. "Hmmm… You're new to the Underground, aren'tcha? Golly, you must be so confused. Someone ought to teach you how things work around here! I guess little old me will have to do. Ready? Here we go!"
Before Frisk could react, a red heart-shaped object appeared, hovering over Frisk's chest, glowing with an ethereal light.
"See that heart? That's your Soul, the very culmination of your being!" Flowey continued. Frisk looked down at it with intrigue. "Your Soul starts off weak, but can grow strong if you gain a lot of LV. What's LV stand for? Why, LOVE of course! You want some LOVE, don't you? Don't worry! I'll share some with you!" He gave a wink, his tongue sticking out. For some reason, Frisk felt uneasy. Then rotating white orbs appeared hovering over Flowey. "Down here, LOVE is shared through… little white… 'friendliness pellets.' Are you ready? Move around! Get as many as you can!"
The pellets moved right to Frisk. Though hesitant they decided to trust the flower for now. They reached out with their hands to try and get them. But when they struck, they cut right through Frisk, tearing their skin. They let out a brief shout of pain.
The flower's smile became very creepy. "You idiot!" they said with glee. "In this world, it's KILL or BE KILLED. Why would ANYONE pass up an opportunity like THIS!?" A ring of bullets appeared around them. "Die." Flowey laughed as the pellets closed in on Frisk. They weren't sure what to do as there was nowhere to run.
Just before they could strike the bullets vanished and Frisk felt themself fully healed. The flower looked momentarily confused before a white fireball sent it flying.
"What a terrible creature, torturing such a poor, innocent youth."
Someone new walked up. She was tall, covered in white fur, had a pair of horns, two floppy ears, a muzzle and wore a purple robe with a strange symbol on it. "Do not be afraid, my child," she said gently. "I am Toriel, caretaker of the Ruins. I pass through this place every day to see if anyone has fallen down. You are the first human to come here in a long time." She held out a hand, which was also covered in fur. "Come! I will guide you through the catacombs." Frisk took the offered hand, a little scared. "This way."
She led them though the purple-bricked halls, showing them how to protect themself in the Underground, as well as showing them the puzzles, which she called 'ancient fusions between diversions and door keys'. After a brief while, she left them go to run a few errands allowing Frisk to explore on their own.
After a while they made it all the way through the Ruins and arrived at her house. She had been ready to call to check on them when she spotted them. She led them in and they could smell the pie she was baking. She even had a room already prepared for them to stay in. When Frisk went to sleep in the bed, they woke to find the lights out, the covers pulled over them and a slice of the pie on a plate on the floor. They spent some time exploring the house, each aspect of it more fascinating than the last.
After they had seen everything, they felt compelled to talk to her. They found her by the fireplace, reading a book.
"Up already I see?" she asked with an excited smile. "I want you to know how glad I am to have someone here. There are so many old books I want to share. I want to show you my favorite bug-hunting spot. I have also prepared a curriculum for your education. This may come as a surprise to you, but I have always wanted to be a teacher. Actually, perhaps that is not very surprising. STILL. I am glad to have you living here." During her rambling, Frisk kept trying to get her attention, but she seemed too excited to notice until now. "Oh, did you want something? What is it?"
Frisk hesitated before speaking. For it felt like they should either say 'nothing' or 'when can I go home?' But Frisk didn't want to say either. They had to say something but they didn't want to ask when they could go home. After all, there was no home to go to.
Frisk took a moment to get the words in their head straight before speaking. "W-what else is out there?" they asked.
"W-what? Why would you need to know that?" Toriel asked nervously.
"Well, if I'm going to be staying here with you, I should know what else there is to know about," Frisk explained.
Toriel seemed to tense up for a moment before relaxing. "I do not know much, I am afraid," she admitted. "I have lived within these Ruins for a long time. But it is not safe out there for a child. If you leave, they… Asgore… will try to kill you. But here I can protect you and keep you safe from him and any others who mean you harm."
Frisk thought that over for a while. Something was still trying to push them to leave, but they silenced that part of themself. Why would they want to leave? They had everything they needed here. "Okay. I'll stay," they said. They weren't sure why but Toriel looked immensely relieved to hear that. They climbed up into her lap. "So, what's this book you're reading?"
"Oh. It is called '72 Uses for Snails'," she answered. "Would you like me to tell you about it?"
"Sure!"
And with that the fates of many changed. This one choice has decided how the next several years will go and unbeknownst to either human or Monster, this one child and their Soul, will determine the fate of the whole world.
End of Prologue
A/N Here it is. The prologue to Divine Soul. It was much closer to finished than I originally thought. As you can see, it's diverging from canon much sooner than the previous story. Of course, that's not the only twist in this story. What's the others? You'll just have to read to find out.
