It was the big day. And everything that could go wrong had gone wrong already. It was the coldest Florida had ever been for this time of year, and rain threatened. Ric's mother and father got delayed overnight in Atlanta, missing the rehearsal dinner, and in the chaos of the early start and a failed alarm clock, her dress for the wedding was left behind at the hotel. Ric's aunt Ella didn't want to tell his mother her special-order dress was missing.
Lula was on it, calling all the guests from up north to see who could potentially solve the problem.
She reached Richard Orr and so he and his wife diverted to Atlanta on their way down, picking up the stray dress on the way. Thank God for those helpful people at Delta. Nobody mentioned it to Ric or Stephanie.
Of course, Stephanie's parents had also missed last night's dinner. In fact, they still had not arrived= they were driving in from Vegas.
"It's a sign." Mary Lou declared to which Stephanie replied, "A sign my mother sampled her pharmaceuticals with her "ice tea"- at least that is my guess."
Valarie had no idea how Helen had gotten them on banned from flying on the airlines servicing the Nevada to Florida routes and her mother refused to say, but it was fun to speculate. By the end of the rehearsal dinner, the betting included using a bong in the airplane bathroom to smuggling- though what she was smuggling had not been specified. Frank had declared that come hell or high water, he would be there for the ceremony, but Grandpa Harry was on standby in case Frank didn't make it on time.
Harry had been called into the girls' dressing room, also known as Valarie's bedroom, as with their fake nails, none of the girls had been able to fasten the long corsets for one another. So poor Harry found himself surrounded by women in very fancy lacy underwear.
"As a younger man I dreamed of being surrounded by a bunch of scantily clad women," he told them when he finished. "The reality is something of a letdown."
As if that wasn't enough, Tank had just stepped on the train of Stephanie's dress with his mammoth dirty shoes… so the hem was graced with blackened prints of two perfect size 14 men's dress shoes. Tank apologized, turning red, and Lula chased him out of the bedroom. The wedding was in less than two hours… no way to get the stain removed. Lula blotted the dress with a clean white towel.
"It's an omen!" Mary Lou fretted.
"Stop with all that crazy omen crap and go to the hairdresser- the one working on Ella and the mother of the groom and get all the Aqua Net Extra Super Hold she can spare." Lula brushed off what dirt could be loosened with a soft brush.
"But what…" Mary Lou started to ask.
"GET IT NOW!" Lula took command. "And Lauren, go whisper in the hairdresser's ear to take a little more time with Stephanie."
Val looked at the stains over Lula's shoulder and Lula told her to go to the baby's changing table and bring back the baby powder.
"Why do you need baby powder?" She asked.
"I need it to fix the dress." Val had no idea what could fix the dress but brought back the baby powder, just as Sonia called up the stairs, "The photographer is here."
Well FUCK!
"Have him work on the Manoso side first- and tell him to take his time." Lula instructed Lauren, the only bridesmaid who was already dressed and ready to go downstairs.
Meticulously, Lula sprayed the stain with the hairspray and sprinkled on the powder, and slowly, the stain was completely covered.
"Holy shit, it worked!"
"Thank God!"
Stephanie, her hair finally finished and her veil attached to the crystal tiara she was using as a headpiece, entered the room to finally get dressed.
Val and Mary Lou helped her get into the dress and started working on the tiny buttons. Lula looked at her friend and her eyes filled with tears. "Girl, you look like a million bucks. That Vera Wang must have cost a fortune."
"Actually, Vera sent the gown as a wedding gift. I helped her with some legal work last year." Stephanie admired the designer gown, but it was more elaborate than she would have picked on her own… Had picked… but she had given that gown to Sonia when she married Joe Morelli.
Mary Lou and Val looked at Stephanie as she turned before them.
"You look so beautiful."
"You look so happy."
"I love all of you," Stephanie swallowed hard. "But we should get downstairs for pictures.
Ram and Junior were helping Abuela Rosa with the sterno food warmers and trays of food they had heated in the RangeMan commercial ovens. Power was out at the venue and no power meant no hot food. Rosa had delayed the dessert delivery to ensure the sweet confections didn't melt, but heating the food called for more manpower. Since the two men were going stag to the wedding and neither was acting as an usher for the day's events, they were drafted to help.
The one issue she still needed help with was music. A DJ would not work with no music. They needed live musicians… well, at least the weather wasn't overwhelmingly hot, since there would be no air conditioning. When could she find musical talent at the last minute…
"Ma'am, I thought we should mention… well, me and Ram and some of the guys… we have a band. We could play some music for dancing at the reception. It won't be exactly what Stephanie planned, but we know most of the traditional favorites."
"Yes, please, will you organize your friends. You will be paid of course…"
"It would be our honor- and can be our gift. Ranger is a hard man to buy for, ma'am."
Frank arrived before Stephanie, thank God. Ric's big friend was outside the hall and Frank sensed there was something wrong.
Tank reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a Bud nip bottle and handed it to him. "It is good to see you, sir. Power is out, but we have a couple of generators that can power the lights. Food is on sternos after being cooked off-site. The bride and groom should be on the way here shortly."
Frank gulped down his beer. "God, that hits the spot. If I never sit in a car with Helen again…"
"Where is she sir?"
"She took the car after dropping me here to see if she can get in some of the photos. Impossible woman."
"So can you tell us why you got kicked off the plane?" Tank whispered conspiratorially.
"I'll give up all the details if you and your gang recreate the RangeMan Village People performance at the reception."
"it might be worth it…"
"Trust me," Frank smiled, "it is totally worth it."
At that the limos pulled up and the Mancuso portion of the wedding party arrived and made their way inside and Tank joined them. A few minutes later, the bridesmaids and Stephanie arrived.
"You look beautiful." Frank told his daughter as her friends fussed over setting her dress just so. "Are you ready to do this."
"Yes, Daddy. I am so ready." And they entered the hall.
