8. Something unusual is happening in the skies of Narnia. What is it and why?
The new Narnians liked rain. The Elephant trumpeted in it, waving his long grey nose. The Jackdaw huddled beneath him, mostly dry, and cracking jokes. The Dogs chased each other and the drops themselves, trying to catch the water on their panting tongues. King Frank and Queen Helen laughed like children, backing away from the muddy dogs, holding hands, her wet skirt plastered to her ankles.
When Narnia's people were so small in number, the rain became a traditional celebration, a dropping of work and a gathering together. The sound of rain brought laughter and smiles as soon as the drops fell, calling people to rush outside.
The fourth time the celebration happened, however, the rain shower did not last long, passing over them and heading north. Most Narnians were wet but not muddy by the time the drops ceased, and (over the barking of the Dogs), calling farewell to one another to go dry themselves in the suddenly brilliant sunshine, when a shrill cry rose from the Jackdaw.
"Look!"
All heads turned, from the large grey head of the Elephant to the tiny heads of the newly-born Rabbits, glistening with water drops. They looked North; they looked up.
There, in the skies of Narnia, were colours. Faint at the top and bottom, but colours shone in the sky in insubstantial curving lines, lines that began at the ground, reached up to a great height, and then fell once more.
"What is it, King Frank? What is it?"
King Frank smiled and put his arm around his soaked wife. "'Tis a rainbow."
"The rain leaves bows?"
"The rain and the sun," Queen Helen corrected softly. "Water and light. In our world, a rainbow means a promise."
Everyone fell silent for a moment.
Then a Cat piped up, "Will it do this every time?" and the silence dissolved as the questions poured in. Several of the Birds, Dogs, and faster animals left to chase the rainbow, but the King, Queen, and several of the others were content to sit on the wet grass, looking up at the sky of Narnia and enjoying its beautiful gifts.
A/N: On my way to see my sister again! Which might be why this is a little happier this time. :)
