The year? 2062. The setting? West Academy.
West Academy, the North American branch of Seto Kaiba's duel school. While not as legendary as its Japanese counterpart, due to the lack of any supernatural shenanigans in its long history, it still has produced many legendary duelists who are known throughout Canada, Mexico and the United States.
Taking inspiration from medieval fantasy and English traditions, West Academy abandoned the Obelisk Blue, Slifer Red and Ra Yellow sorting system as soon as Synchro monsters were invented. The students were now divided into five houses: Fusion, Synchro, Xyz, Link and Ritual (which also included Pendulums). The houses encouraged friendly competition among students, and helped West Academy stand out.
This is the story of five West Academy students, and the stupid things they get up to.
Chapter 1 - Underworld
"Look at him... he's so cool." Amir sighed. It was the middle of the day, and the start of lunch, which meant Amir was doing what he always did: Staring at his crush, Ben Salazar, and being dramatic.
Amir Bazuzi was a short, scrappy looking Arab teen with messy black hair. He wore a black school jacket to show that he was part of House Xyz. Sitting at the table with him was his best friend, Carmen Lockhart, a black girl with braided hair who was wearing a purple House Fusion jacket.
"He certainly is... tall." Carmen said, looking at Ben judgmentally. He was much taller than the other two students, and much wider. With his hairy face and serious expression, he almost looked like a grizzly bear that learned how to duel. "Just go over and talk to him."
"I would rather die!" Amir said, his face whitening. "You don't just tell a guy you like him, that's crazy!" He sighed again, a little more dramatically. Carmen rolled her eyes, resisting the urge to slap him.
"Fine then. Get his attention another way." She looked over the crowd, and singled out one of the seniors. "Look, Chad is right there. Just challenge him to a duel, and your big bear is definitely gonna notice."
Chad Winchester was a House Ritual student known for his short temper and massive biceps. He was very much the stereotypical school bully, except he used Duel Monsters to let out his anger, instead of physical violence.
Amir gulped, thinking about his options. "Actually ask Ben on a date, or duel the biggest, meanest jock in school... Why do I do this to myself?" He got up and took a deep breath, before walking over to Chad's table. Carmen watched excitedly, only slightly worried about her friend's safety.
"Hey, Chad..." Amir knew he needed to say something that would make Chad angry enough to want to duel, but not enough to punch him in the face. "Pendulum Summoning is the worst mechanic. Half monster and half spell? Make up your mind already."
"The fuck did you just say, kid?!" Chad squeezed his soda so hard that it exploded. He stood up to his full height, which was way too tall for a high schooler, and cracked his knuckles. "Are you trying to get your butt kicked?"
"Just go away, weirdo, before he ends up killing you." Matilda Abercrombie, Chad's girlfriend and the most popular girl in school, flipped her red hair dismissively. She glared at Amir with the kind of malice only a high school mean girl could produce. Matilda's evil eye was so legendary in West Academy, some students began calling her "Medusa", which she wasn't happy about.
Amir turned his head to make sure Ben was still watching. The Hispanic boy was looking directly at him, face full of concern. Well, can't back down now! Neil thought, a mix of excited and scared. "Duel me! Right here, right now. Pendulums vs Xyz, let's go!" He activated his Duel Disk and tried to look brave.
Chad strapped on his Duel Disk, which was Ritual Monster blue, and nodded. "You're on, squirt."
(Amir LP 8000) - (Chad LP 8000)
"My move!" Chad drew six cards, and immediately slammed two of them down onto his Disk. "I load the Pendulum Scale with my Scale 2 Igknight Cavalier and Scale 7 Igknight Margrave! And then I Pendulum Summon!"
Two beacons of light shined down on the field, each one containing a monster and a runic number. On the right was a pink, heavily armored warrior, that was clearly meant to be female. (Amir couldn't help but think how unsubtle Industrial Illusions were when it came to this sort of thing.) On the left was a similar looking warrior, only in red.
The first Pendulum Summoned monster must have been another Igknight. It was a warrior in blue, carrying a long, thin sword. (ATK 1600). The second one was much more familiar. A female knight in heavily decorated armor, and wearing a feathered cap. (ATK 1200)
"I summon Igknight Crusader and Command Knight! And thanks to her effect, they both gain 400 attack points!" Chad laughed, as his monsters grew to 2000 and 1600 ATK, respectfully. "Now I'll set this, and turn things over to you. Punk."
Amir took a breath, centering himself. He was normally a ball of social anxiety, but that all went out the window when he started to duel. "I'll start things off with Heaven's Lost Property! So we both draw 3 cards, then discard 2." White feathers rained from the sky, landing on both students' Duel Disks.
"Fine by me. More cards means more ways to pound you!" Chad responded. Amir opened his mouth to say something, but decided against it. Matilda, watching from the sidelines, just sighed and facepalmed.
"By discarding one Vampire card from my hand, I can summon Vampire Familiar from my graveyard!" Amir slid a card into the discard slot, and there was suddenly a high pitched shrieking noise. A small, black, bat-like creature with one enormous red eye flew out of his Disk. (ATK 500)
"And by paying 500 life points, I can add any Vampire monster from my deck to my hand." Vampire Familiar bit Amir on the wrist, and he grimaced, before taking a card from his deck. "Working with the undead isn't easy, but it certainly has its benefits."
"God, you are such a nerd." The muscular duelist rolled his eyes. "I activate my trap, Kickfire! If one of my Fire monsters gets destroyed by a card effect, this card gets a counter. And I can send it to the graveyard to deal you 1000 damage for each counter!"
"Thanks for spelling that out, genius." Amir continued his turn, ignoring his opponent. "I tribute Vampire Familiar to summon my Shadow Vampire!" The imp vanished, replaced by a tall, imposing figure in gothic armor. (ATK 2000) "And because I Normal Summoned him, I get to bring out Vampire Duke from my deck!"
A real bat flew over the field, transforming into a stereotypical vampire. He was tall, pale, and wore a long, flowing cape. (ATK 2000) "Now I activate this effect! I declare one card type, and you send a card from your deck to the graveyard. And I choose Spells!"
Chad grunted and discarded Painful Decision, before shuffling his deck. "Now, for a little mood lighting. I activate Vampire Kingdom!" The cafeteria was transformed into the courtyard of a gothic castle, with a cloudy black and red sky looming overhead. The sky was empty apart from a blood red full moon. Amir's Duel Disk played a few notes of some creepy organ music. Classic horror fans would recognize it as Toccata and Fugue in D minor, first used in 1931's Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde.
"This place is home sweet home for my Vampires. It gives all Zombies 500 extra attack points whenever they battle. Like now! Vampire Duke, attack with Children of the Night!" Duke threw open his cape dramatically, unleashing dozens of vampire bats, which swarmed Igknight Crusader until he shattered.
"Shadow Vampire can't attack this turn because of his effect, so I'll end my turn with this." The Arab duelist set one card and nodded confidently.
Chad growled and drew. "You're not the only one who can play field spells. I activate Ignition Phoenix!" There was an explosion in the shape of, well, a phoenix, and half of Vampire Kingdom faded, transforming into a burnt out battleground. "Every Igknight gets 300 more attack and defense, but we'll get to that later. I activate Circle of the Fire Kings!"
"I destroy one Fire monster I control, then summon another one from my graveyard. So goodbye Command Knight, and hello Igknight Champion!" Command Knight was engulfed in flames, which rose up to the ceiling, before parting to show off Chad's new monster. Like the other Igknights, he was wearing bulky, gun-like armor, this time green. Unlike the others, Champion was over seven feet tall, standing head and shoulders above Chad. He carried a real gun in one hand, and a spear in the other. (ATK 3100)
"I've seen bigger!" Carmen shouted. A few people giggled, but went quiet when Matilda looked at them. They stared at Chad, waiting for his next move.
"I activate Igknight Cavalier's effect, destroying her and Margrave to search out another Fire Warrior from my deck. And then I activate Pendulum Paradox, so I can add two Pendulum Monsters from my Extra Deck to my hand!" The Pendulum user quickly rearranged his cards, smirking. "I might be more buff than most of the geeks at this school, but that doesn't mean I'm stupid."
"I load the Pendulum Scale again with Scale 2 Igknight Crusader and Scale 7 Templar!" The blue Igknight reappeared, accompanied by a new Igknight, this one pale blue and carrying some kind of sword-gun combination. "I Pendulum Summon Cavalier and Margrave from my Extra Deck!"
The pink (ATK 2700) and red (ATK 2100) armored knights joined Champion on the field, weapons at the ready. "You know, these guys remind me of a show I used to watch as a kid. You remember Power Rangers? I think they've got, like, a hundred seasons by now."
"They're up to 42!" Ben said, suddenly speaking up from the audience. Everyone turned to stare at him, making him blush and sit back down. "Just, uh, just saying."
"Anyways, my Igknights are a lot like the Power Rangers. They're bright and colorful, but they can still kick your ass." Chad grinned. "'Course, I don't remember any of the Power Rangers shooting someone." Igknight Champion raised his weapon and fired, blowing Vampire Duke to pixelated pieces. Amir grunted, shielding his eyes from the fiery blast.
"Cavalier, attack his Shadow Vampire!" The pink knight drew several daggers from her armor, and ran forward, flames dancing across her body and weapons.
"I activate the effect of Vampire Bite from my graveyard!" Amir said, quickly pocketing a card. "By banishing it, I can grant one Vampire monster an extra thousand attack points for one turn only!" Shadow Vampire's score rose to 3500, and he suddenly drew a sword made of twisted black metal, using it to decapitate the female warrior. The Zombie stood in front of Amir, raising his sword protectively.
Chad gritted his teeth. "Champion, stake his Vampire Duke!" The huge Warrior chucked his spear, impaling the fancy Zombie. Amir grunted, turning his head to avoid looking at the destruction.
"And I'm not done yet, shrimp." Chad hit a button on his Duel Disk, and Igknight Margrave burst into pixels, flying into Champion's flamethrower. "By returning one Igknight monster to my hand, I can send one of your cards back to the deck. So say goodbye to Shadow Vampire!" Champion fired his gun, incinerating Amir's only monster. "That's all for my turn."
(ALP 6900) - (CLP 6700)
Okay, Amir, don't panic... He thought, slowly drawing his next card. Sure, you don't have any monsters on the field, and Chad has one with over 3000 attack points, but there's still your field spell... The Xyz duelist looked at his hand and took a breath.
"I activate Book of Life! This lets me bring back a Zombie from my graveyard, as long as I banish a monster from yours!" Vampire Duke emerged onto the field, and Command Knight's card slipped out of Chad's Duel Disk.
"And this triggers Duke's effect again! So you lose another Spell from your deck!" Chad grunted and searched for a card, before sliding it into his discard slot and reshuffling. "Now I can use the second effect of Vampire Kingdom!" The red moon overhead seemed to glow brighter.
"When a Vampire monster makes you discard a card from your deck, I can send one Vampire from my deck to the graveyard, and then destroy a card on the field. I choose your Champion!" A beam of red light fired from the full moon, disintegrating Igknight Champion.
"My Kickfire trap gets another counter because of that!" The taller duelist replied. "I can take a few direct attacks, my monsters will just take you out next turn!"
"You're gonna take some direct attacks alright." Amir smiled. "I summon Vampire Princess!" A new vampire materialized, this one obviously female. She was young, probably younger than Amir and Chad, and wore a gothic dress and a silver tiara. (ATK 1300)
"And when I do that, I get to summon another low level Vampire from my hand, like Vampire Paladin!" Yet another bat flew out of the castle, transforming into a knight wearing black armor. He carried a lance, and his helmet seemed to be shaped like a bat's head. (ATK 1900)
"Vampire Paladin lets me search out any Spell or Trap with Vampire in its name." A card shot out of Amir's deck, and he quickly added it to his hand. "But I won't be using that one this turn. I'll be using this instead!" His facedown card lifted up. "Vampire Awakening!"
"Don't you know that Halloween isn't for another couple months?" Chad groaned. "What are you gonna pull out of your ass now? Frankenstein? The Wolfman?"
"Vampire Prince!" Amir replied. His new monster was a young boy wearing gothic clothes, looking like a preteen version of Vampire Lord. (ATK 1600) "And when he's special summoned, I can make all of my Vampires become level 6!"
The Arab boy looked into the crowd to make sure Ben was still watching. When he saw his crush, he beamed, convinced his plan was working. "Now that I four level 6 monsters on the field, I can Xyz Summon!" Ben's gonna be so impressed, he'll definitely want to go on that date now!
The Overlay Network opened up underneath the four Zombies. "First, I overlay Duke and Prince to summon Vampire Gardna!" This monster, much to everyone's surprise, was a werewolf. A seven foot tall, black furred werewolf with glowing red eyes, wearing a harness and collar made of chains, and shackles on his wrists. It growled at Chad, practically foaming at the mouth. (ATK 2600)
"What the hell is that?" Matilda shouted from the audience. "That's not a Vampire! That doesn't even look like a Zombie!"
Amir grinned, happy to talk about his cards. "No, he's not a vampire. Gardna used to be a normal werewolf, living in the woods around Vampire Kingdom, until he did something to get on their bad side. So the vampires locked him up in their dungeon and transformed him into the ultimate guard dog!"
Chad took a step back, but put on a brave face. "Alright, so you've got a big fleabag. Who's next?"
"Glad you asked! I overlay Vampire Princess and Paladin in order to Xyz Summon my Nosferatu Vampire!" The next monster also stood out from the rest. It was definitely a vampire, but an ugly one, with a bald head, pointed ears, clawed hands and a mouth full of fangs. He wore peasant's clothes, which had clearly seen better days. (ATK 2000)
"Time to battle! Gardna, attack Chad directly with Monster Mash!" The werewolf's ATK briefly rose up to 3100, as it lunged at the duelist. Chad was knocked back several feet, hitting a lunch table. He couldn't help but be grateful that this wasn't an Action Duel, otherwise that would've hurt a lot more.
"Nosferatu, your turn!" The savage vampire ran forward and swiped at Chad with its claws. He grunted, but stood his ground. "I end my turn with this facedown card."
Amir was practically glowing, so impressed with himself. "What was that about it being too early for Halloween?"
Chad drew his card and looked at it, his expression slowly changing from a grimace to a smile. He burst out laughing, a spiteful kind of laugh. "Forget Halloween, it must be April Fool's, because you're an idiot!"
"What are you talking about?" Amir stomped his foot. He was winning! Why was Chad laughing at him?
Matilda spoke up. "What is Chad is trying to say is that you could have won last turn. If you had just attacked directly with your four monsters, you would've reduced Chad's life points to zero. But instead, you decided to show off, so he's still in this."
Amir felt all the color drain out of his face. He had screwed up royally, and it might have cost him the duel! Stupid, stupid, stupid! How many times did Yugi or Jaden or Yusei win because their opponent decided to flex instead of just finishing them off? He chastised himself, smacking his forehead.
"Don't beat yourself up, Amir, that's my job!" Chad laughed. "I activate Card of Sanctity! So we both have to draw until we have six cards in our hands. This thing goes on and off the banlist all the time, lucky they just Limited it this time."
Both duelists drew five cards. "Next, I'm finally gonna use Kickfire's effect. I can send it to the graveyard to deal you a thousand points of damage for each counter on it!" The trap exploded, firing two blasts of energy at Amir, which almost knocked him over.
"Next up, Harpie's Feather Duster! I'm tired of looking at your ugly castle!" Vampire Kingdom and Amir's set card were destroyed, and Ignition Phoenix grew to cover the cafeteria.
"I'll also play The A. Forces! So all my Warriors get 200 attack for each one I've got!" The continuous spell appeared on his field. "And now for the climax! I Pendulum Summon Igknight Gallant, Margrave and Cavalier!" The red and pink Igknights reappeared, accompanied by a brand new monster. This one was wearing green armor, and carrying what looked like a harpoon gun with a feed belt. (Gallant ATK 3000, Margrave ATK 2700, Cavalier ATK 3300)
"Margrave, slay his Nosferatu!" The red warrior raised his twin swords and charged. Before he could attack Nosferatu, however, Vampire Gardna jumped in the way and intercepted the attack. "Wait, what just happened?"
"While Vampire Gardna has Xyz Material, you're not allowed to attack anyone else." Amir explained. He sighed as he watched the werewolf shatter into pixels. "That's why he's called Guard-na."
"Well all it did was save you 100 life points. Gallant, you attack the ugly one! And Cavalier, you attack directly!" Gallant fired his gun, impaling Nosferatu and destroying it immediately. Cavalier threw her daggers at Amir, hitting him in the stomach. He groaned and fell onto one knee.
"I set this and end my turn." Chad smirked. "Better make this move count, deadhead. It's the last one you get."
(ALP 500) - (CLP 1100)
Amir struggled to get to his feet and slowly drew his seventh card. He didn't bother to look at it, he was too distracted by his inner monologue. Great going, Amir, this is what you get for listening to Carmen! Now you're going to humiliate yourself in front of the whole school, practically, and Ben! I should just surrender and get this over with...
"Hey, Amir!" A familiar voice called out. The Xyz duelist lifted his head and looked at the audience. There was Ben, pushing his way to the front. "Don't give up! You've got seven cards in your hand, that's more than enough to make a comeback! You can do this!"
Amir felt his heart pounding, and his face turning red. Now I have to win! He thought, grinning and tapping his foot excitedly. "It's my turn!"
"Time for another change of scenery! I activate Infernalvania 2 - Vampire Empire!" The cafeteria transformed into the throne room of a castle made of black rock, with a blood red carpet under their feet. There were stained glass windows depicting various Zombie monsters, and an ornate throne at the very head of the room.
"As long as this card is on the field, you can't target my Vampires with card effects, they gain 300 attack and defense, and most importantly, I can normal summon them with one less tribute than normal!" A bat flew down from the rafters, transforming into a handsome vampire with clawed hands, carrying what was either a scepter or a strange looking sword. (ATK 2500)
"I summon Vampire Scarlet Scourge! But as pretty as he is, he won't be staying for long. I activate Transmodify!" Scarlet Scourge was enveloped by energy, before vanishing entirely. "I can tribute one monster to summon one with the same type and attribute from my deck, but one level higher! So I get rid of my level 6 monster to summon a level 7 one!"
Scarlet was replaced by a female vampire, wearing incredibly revealing clothing with red cross accessories. (ATK 2300) "Meet Vampire Vamp!"
"She's hot, but she's 200 points weaker than your other monster. Why bother bringing her out?" Chad asked, scratching the back of his head.
"Chad, you idiot, obviously she's got a stronger effect!" Matilda shouted, glaring at her boyfriend. He shuddered and shut his mouth, trying to focus on the duel.
"Medusa... I mean, Matilda is right!" Amir said, pretending not to notice her staring at him. "When I normal summon a Vampire monster, Vamp gets to take one of your monsters and turn them into an equip spell! Allow me to demonstrate. I activate Double Summon, and then I summon Vampire Grimson!"
Another female vampire joined the duel, this one wearing a long, hooded red cloak, and carrying a massive scythe shaped like a bat's wing. (ATK 2300)
"I chain Gift of the Mystical Elf! I get 300 life points for every monster on the field!" Chad's set card lifted up. He was surrounded by golden light, his life points rising up to 2600.
"It won't help! Vamp, do your thing!" The femme fatale blew a kiss to Igknight Cavalier, who walked over to Amir's side of the field, standing behind Vamp in the Spell/Trap card zone. (ATK 2300 - 4700) "Did I mention that she steals their attack points too?"
"Okay, so your monster's got more attack points than a Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon. I've still got enough life points to survive this turn!" Chad stood his ground. But Amir just smiled, almost looking like a vampire himself.
"That's why I'm going to play Forbidden Lance." He explained. Igknight Gallant began to glow with pale blue light. "It lowers your monster's attack points by 800, and makes them unaffected by other Spell and Trap cards. Which means Gallant loses the bonuses from your field spell and The A Forces!"
Gallant's ATK dropped all the way to 1300, and he seemed to groan. "Vamp, attack him and end this duel! The seductive vampire turned around and grabbed several of Igknight Cavalier's knives, throwing them into Gallant's chest with expert precision. The Warrior exploded, and Chad let out a cry of frustration.
(ALP 500) - (CLP 0)
"I did it!" Amir cheered, almost dropping his cards in his excitement. Carmen and Ben ran up to him, Ben pulling the smaller boy into a big bear hug. He quickly let him go, however, both laughing nervously.
"Told you it'd work." Carmen smirked, poking Amir playfully. "You keep dueling like this and you could give Alexandria Genesis a run for her money." Alexandria Genesis was a duelist in the American pro leagues who Amir was a huge fan of. She was famous for her Zombie World deck, as well as her frequent comeback victories.
"You looked so cool!" Ben said, patting the Xyz duelist on the back. "I know we haven't talked much before, but we sit next to each other in Duelist History class. I've been too nervous to talk to you before now..." He confessed. "Do you wanna... get something to eat sometime?"
Amir felt like he was going to feint. "Hey, Carmen? Can you do me a solid?" He turned to his best friend, face completely red. "Pinch me to make sure I'm not dreaming?"
Carmen laughed and punched Amir's arm. "You are such a dork. I'm going to go put this on DuelTube, you two have fun." She spun her cell phone dramatically, like a wild west gunslinger, and headed back to her room.
Amir and Ben started talking and heading in the opposite direction, and were so distracted that they didn't even notice Matilda yelling at Chad for losing to a freshman.
