When Beth woke up the next morning she reached across the bed, expecting to feel Rip lying next to her but he wasn't. She sat up looking around the empty room, she heard talking downstairs first Rip's voice then Carters. Beth quietly got out of bed and stood at the top of the stairs while they talked. "Do I make you and mama fight?" Carter asked his voice breaking slightly, "No kid you don't. We fight because we're both stubborn people. Nothing you do causes us to fight." Carter looked down; he went to open his mouth but stopped when he saw Beth coming down the steps. "What's happening down here? A little man to man talks." No one said anything just ate their breakfast, "I gotta go baby, Carter let's go you have your daily riding with John." Carter cleaned up his plate smiling at Beth before walking out the door with Rip.
Beth was alone for about 10 minutes when Kayce and Monica show up at her door, "Hey Beth." Kayce said trying to sound like he was just stopping by. "Kayce what can I do for you?" Tate stood behind his mother, clearly not interested in whatever was happening. "Tate and I are going out of town, and I don't want Monica to be alone today could you maybe stay with her." Beth nodded, opening the door wider for the girl, she said her goodbyes and walked in the house. "You don't have to do this you know?" Monica said sitting on the couch, Beth sat across from her. "You're family, it's not a problem. I do have an appointment in Salt Lake maybe you would like to come then after we could talk some more." Monica nodded.
The drive to Salt Lake was quiet, Beth would occasionally look at Monica who was staring out the window. When they pulled into the parking garage Monica finally spoke up. "Do you want me to go in with you?" She asked Beth shut of the car, "You don't have to but if you don't want to be stuck in the car you can." Monica got out with Beth, she walked with her to the room. Beth sat nervous on the table, her hands shaking and her heart pounding. The doctor came in looking at, "Beth and you are?" Before Monica could answer Beth did it for her, "She's my sister-in-law." The doctor nodded pulling up the ultrasound machine to make sure everything was good internally. Then he examined her pelvic area, Beth didn't let the tears fall as she remembered why she had to have these annual checkups. "Beth everything seems to be good, but there is something you should know." Beth sat up scared to death, she looked at Monica who grabbed Beth's hand holding it in hers. "This might come as a shock, but I want you to look at something." He turned the screen to her showing her a blob, "When you first started coming here and you told us about what happened we may have jumped the gun." Beth pulled her clothing down and examined the screen, "What the hell does that mean?" The doctor turned off the screen and printed off a piece of paper. "It means the procedure only took one ovary and left the other and your fallopian tubes intact. You can carry children." The doctor excused himself before handing the picture to Beth, "This blob is proof of that congratulations."
The drive home was even more silent than the drive there, Rip was sitting on the porch when Monica and Beth pulled up. "Should I be worried about her corrupting you?" He questioned Monica who laughed, Beth walked right past him and into the bathroom. "Did something happen today I should know about?" He asked Monica sat next to him, "I think you should talk to her about that, I'm going to go to the ranch talk to her she needs you." Rip didn't need convincing he rushed to the bathroom, he knocked and tried to open it, but it was locked. "Beth baby let me in please." Beth unlocked the door letting him in, she sat on the floor leaning against the sink. "Beth what's the matter? What happened today?" Beth shook her head too afraid to say anything, "I'm fine it's just a lot of information for one day." He pulled her close to him, "What kind of information?" Beth reached into her pocket pulling out the piece of paper, she placed it in his hand and watched as he studied the paper. "Beth what am I looking at here?" Beth loved how he could be so smart but so dumb at the same time. "That is my stomach and that little blob there is a miracle." Rip laid his hand with the paper down, "Are you telling me..." He didn't get to finish before Beth nodded. "Yes, baby I'm pregnant. Turns out I still have everything I need to have kids; we can have kids." Rip looked at her fearing she was lying, there was no sign of it in her eyes.
Beth laid in Rip's arms that night his hand resting on her belly. "Violet?" Beth said placing her hand on his, "What's that baby?" Beth scooted closer to him, "That is the name I want to name our daughter if its a girl." Rip smiled as Beth pulled a notebook out of her nightstand, "What is that?" She opened the book, turning the page to a list of names. "When I found out I couldn't have kids I was so angry and hurt but I wrote down all the names I wanted my kids." She handed the book to Rip he read some of the names, "I love them Beth, you seemed to think you were having a daughter there is hardly any boy names on here." Beth sat up looking down at her belly, there was nothing there but she could imagine what it was going to look like. "I always thought I would name him John or Lee something like that, what about you any names?" Rip shook his head, the names she chose were perfect. "I love the names but I'm telling you it's a boy. John Wheeler" He said kissing her belly, Beth smiled moving him away. "Who said he was getting your last name?" Rip looked at her stunned, "Baby you have my last name?" She chuckled, "Yes but it's Dutton Wheeler." Rip pulled her to him tickling her until she couldn't handle it anymore. "Fine John or Violet Wheeler." Once they agreed on a name Beth fell asleep with Rip's hand still on her belly, whispering to the baby promising to be a good dad.
