Undercover ch 5

Mulder kicked his shoes off in a haphazard way as he made his way into the house. There is a little shoe rack that Scully has near the door that Mulder never uses, resulting in a mini-lecture about it basically daily. He paused before going any further and put them on the shoe rack. He will never tell Scully this but he doesn't forget to put his shoes on the shoe rack he chooses to not use it because she's so cute when she lectures him. Now that she isn't here though that won't happen and he will just end up tripping on them later. He also promised that while she is gone he will keep the place clean and he plans on keeping that promise.

He sighed as he walked into their room and saw her side of the bed, knowing it would be empty tonight. Scully is fortunate that she can sleep in almost in situation. In fact, she was sleeping perfectly fine when he ended his shift despite it being her first night in prison! He would think most people would have trouble sleeping their first night in prison but well she isn't 'most people' and to think he worried she would have a hard time adjusting. He however isn't as fortunate and he knows it. He will probably not get any sleep tonight. He is sure he will just worry the entire time and not having her next to him just seems wrong. Deciding instead to just watch infomercials in the living room like his bachelor days then to face the bed alone.

He couldn't help the worry that nagged at him despite knowing that she was, somehow, sleeping unfazed and Jack wasn't there. When he left Reyes had to practically drag him out of the prison insisting that Doggett would have eyes on her the entire time. Reyes spent like 30 minutes talking him off a cliff.

"What if Jack comes into work tonight for some reason?" he asked as he leaned against his car in the parking lot.

"Then Doggett will notify you, but that's not likely to happen" Reyes reassured.

"'What if the other inmates try to hurt her?"

"Doggett and the other guards will prevent that and besides she's done fine so far," Reyes said and he had to admit he was right. Scully is such a Navy Brat that she can adjust to anything and this proves it as she had a decent start to prison life and seems to get along well with her one bunkmate. She had one minor thing with another inmate who tried to steal shampoo from her seeming to think she would back down quickly but the inmate quickly gave it back when she realized Scully wasn't about to be intimidated and held her own ground.

"But what if…"

"Agent Mulder, go home!"

Reyes had to tell him that probably five more times before he actually listened and drove back to their apartment. He kind of wished that he still had his apartment thinking it would be easier to spend the night in a place that is less 'Scully', even though he would be reminded of her anywhere. However, being in her, and as of 2 months ago officially their, apartment is like being in surround sound Scully, and while that normally makes him love the place all the more, right now it was torturous.

Scully woke up to being roughly pulled out of her bed by a fellow inmate. She could barely even register what had happened before she was thrown to the ground roughly as several inmates cheered.

"What the…" she said going to get up but before she could get up or finish the statement she was kicked in the stomach by the shampoo thief inmate. Two other inmates held her down while the shampoo thief hit her over and over again.

"Mulder… help me" she yelled and he woke up with a start. He rubbed the sleep from his eyes. 'It was just a dream' he told himself hoping that she was truly safe. People do get attacked by fellow inmates in prison all the time. He tried to push away the thought. 'She's fine' he told himself as he got up and looked at the clock: 3:35 am. Great he doesn't go back in until 8 a.m., he still has like 4 hours to kill.

He looked at her engagement ring as he fiddled with it nervously. It seems wrong for it to be off her finger. He had gotten quite used to seeing it on her finger, it always made him happy when it caught his eye. The promise of the ring means that one day soon he will be able to call her his wife. He already considered himself lucky to call her his fiance.

Mulder wanted to make it perfect but was still debating how to do just that. She isn't the type to want an over-the-top proposal. She has told him before that if he ever proposes to her in public she will say no. She hates being put on the spot and he knows an ex of hers proposed in a fancy restaurant and being put on the spot she said yes only to later say no when they were alone. So he can rule out fancy restaurants and anything public. He ultimately decided the location had to be their basement office, after all, it's where they met and where they fell in love. He came up with a plan: wake her up with blueberry pancakes in bed, then they will go to a local lake they have come to love for the day, then on the way home he is gonna say he left something in their office and he will propose there. He talked with Skinner who agreed to let them have the Monday afterwards off.

It was all going as planned, they had a lovely breakfast in bed and the lake was lovely and they had it basically to themselves. It was going great until the weather had other plans. He checked the weather many times leading up to this including this morning and it was calling for a beautiful sunny day, but all of a sudden without much warning it got overcast and started pouring. He grabbed the blanket and picnic basket as they ran to his car. By the time they got in his car, they were both drenched.

"I'm so sorry, the weather said it would be sunny all day," he said worried that everything was ruined but he was met with the sound of Scully giggling and he couldn't help but laugh alongside her.

"Do you remember our first case together?"

"Of course"

"When it poured on us," she said and he laughed thinking back on the memory. It was the first time he thought about kissing her. She was just so adorable all wet and despite that, she started laughing at his ideas, a precursor to how many times she would tolerate his crazy ideas over the years. Her little laugh was so cute even if it was at his ideas and the way she was slightly shaking from the cold made him want to kiss her right there and then. It was the first of many times he wanted to pull her into a passionate kiss but didn't.

"When you laughed at my ideas and you were so cute I thought of kissing you for the first time," he said and she smiled at him. They sat in silence for a bit before Mulder spoke up again.

"I wasn't planning on it raining"

"It's okay, you don't control the weather, Mulder. You aren't Holman" she said and he laughed thinking back on their weatherman friend who still sends them cards yearly on their anniversary as a thank you.

"It may not be what you had planned, Mulder but when do things ever go as we planned?" she asked and he laughed.

"Like never"

"Today has been perfect, rain included, for whatever you had planned," she said and he laughed. 'Of course she knew' he thought and just then lightning lit up the sky followed by a clap of thunder.

"Okay, we need to find shelter," he said.

"We can't drive in this, Mulder!" she said slight anxiety in her voice. She wasn't afraid of thunderstorms but being in a car isn't the safest place to be right now.

"I'm about to call Holman and ask him to send the storm away from us" he joked and she shook her head.

"It's fine, Mulder the storm will pass us by, we will just have to wait it out," she said and he nodded.

"Oh god, you must be freezing," he said noticing how she was shivering. She shook her head. Of course, he was now preoccupied thinking how he ruined this as if the rain was his fault. She watched as he looked through his car for a blanket or something despite them both knowing the only one was just as soaked as they were.

"It's okay, Mulder. I'll live…" she said. She waited for like a minute before realizing that now self-conscious he was overthinking this.

"Mulder… just ask me," she said and he smiled sheepishly before patting down his pockets before to his horror realizing the ring fell out in their frantic run to the car.

"Um… I… it fell out in the run to the car" he admitted embarrassed and feeling horrible that he keeps ruining this. He can't propose to her without a ring. Yet again though he was surprised when she started laughing.

"I'm sorry" The laughter died on her lips as she saw how he was beating himself up.

"Mulder… It's fine"

"Well, I can't propose to you now!"

"Why not?"

"I don't have the ring"

"So?... Mulder, it's okay" she reassured taking his hand in his and he nodded taking a deep breath..

"Dana Katherine Scully, I have never had someone in my life like you before. When you joined the X files I didn't realize just how lucky I was. You have been an amazing partner, a great friend, a loyal companion, my touchstone, one in 5 billion, my everything, and I'm hoping one day I can call you my wife. Scully, will you marry me?" he asked and saw tears in her eyes as she nodded her head frantically.

"Yes," she said pulling him into a passionate kiss as another flash of lightning lit up the sky. They only broke apart when the loud clap of thunder startled them both.

"You are gonna have to help me find the ring when the storm clears," he said and she laughed.

"I expect nothing less," she said kissing him again ready for more adventures with him by her side.
