((A/N: Sorry this took so long, writing is hard. I actually rewrote this chapter twice!))
Chapter 3 - Space Jam
Ben Salazar wasn't used to having someone to impress. Sure, he'd tried catching a cute guy's attention with his dueling or Toku knowledge or raw physical strength before, but most attempts failed. But now he actually had a boyfriend, one who thought all his silly little interests and mannerisms were cool and extremely attractive, which baffled him.
It was a lot of pressure, trying to stay cool around Amir. But, God, was it worth it. Every time Amir laughed at one of Ben's nerdy jokes, or asked to watch anime with him, or they kissed, Ben felt like he was about to melt. He was head over heels in love with this boy.
"Alright, students, it's time for the Daily Duel." Professor Kinley, the Action Dueling professor, began class the way she always did: Choosing two random students and having them duel each other. The goal was supposed to be to show what they were learning and get some exercise, but most students just saw it as a way to flex their new cards or beat the crap out of a classmate they didn't like.
"Today's Daily Duelists will be..." Professor Kinley hit a button on her laptop and ran a program, pulling up two names. "Ben Salazar and Simon Moreau!"
Ben gulped and hastily strapped on his Duel Disk, seeing his boyfriend watching him from the House Xyz portion of the room. He hadn't had a good chance to show off his dueling skills to Amir yet, and this was the perfect opportunity.
Simon was a blonde haired, Canadian enby who Ben had only spoken to once or twice. Last time he'd seen them duel, their deck was a mishmash of different Fusion Monsters with little to no synergy. A total pushover.
"You ready to get your butt kicked?" Ben said, trying to sound cool. Simon just snorted and activated their Disk, giving Ben a stupid grin. Obviously, they weren't impressed.
"Action Field set! Madolche Chateau!" Professor Kinley hit another button, and the gymnasium transformed into a massive castle made out cakes, cookies and candy. There were cotton candy trees, a peanut brittle road, and even a river made of chocolate milk.
"Man, I wish this wasn't a hologram..." Ben whispered to himself, staring at the candy castle. He self-consciously put a hand on his belly, wondering how many calories an Action Duel could burn.
(Ben LP 8000) - (Simon LP 8000)
"My move!" Ben drew his six cards, trying to form a strategy. He had Alien Grey and Brainwashing Beam in his hand, a pretty good defense for your first turn. Suddenly, his Duel Disk buzzed. Good luck, handsome! It was a text from Amir! Wanting to look cool, Ben ignored the defensive option, deciding to go all out.
"I activate Unexpected Dai! Which lets me summon a level 4 or lower Normal Monster from my deck. I only have one, so I choose Alien Shocktrooper!" An ugly, centaur-like Reptile burst out of the ground, sending sugar and candy dirt flying everywhere. (ATK 1900)
"Next, I summon Alien Telepath!" Another Alien joined the first, this one shorter and wider, with a gigantic mouth and two catfish-like whiskers (ATK 1600). "I'll activate Code A Ancient Ruins, and end my turn." A small, pyramid-like structure emerged from the card, standing between Ben and his Aliens. Ben turned around to look for Amir in the crowd, and frowned when he realized the other students were hidden by the field spell.
"My move, then!" Simon drew a card before playing it immediately. "I set one monster and two cards facedown. That'll be all."
"That's it?" Ben was disappointed. "Just a set and pass? Not even a fusion summon?" How was he supposed to put on a show and impress Amir like this? Simon just shrugged and ran off, obviously looking for Action Cards.
(BLP 8000) - (SLP 8000)
Ben groaned and drew another card. "I summon Alien Scientist!" A tiny, big-headed alien piloting a miniature flying saucer landed on the field (ATK 500) "And guess what, he's a Tuner monster!"
"I tune my level 2 Alien Scientist with level 4 Alien Telepath, in order to Synchro Summon! Clustering stars unite and form a monster from all the way across the galaxy! Level 6! Alien Astronaut!"
Alien Scientist transformed into two glowing rings, while Telepath became four stars. They collided, and out of the explosion stepped a monster that looked a lot like the Scientist, piloting a humanoid mech suit, with a laser gun in each hand (ATK 2500)
"Shocktrooper, attack their facedown monster!" The centaurian alien charged and swung its sword. Simon's monster was revealed to be a Spellcaster in a concealing blue hooded cloak, holding a familiar looking dagger (DEF 1600)
"That was Arsenal Summoner, so now I can add any Guardian card I want from my deck to my hand." Simon explained, a card shooting out of their Duel Disk before they snatched it up. They had climbed into a cotton candy tree in order to grab an Action Card, but quickly fell onto their face when Alien Astronaut attacked directly.
"Wait, Guardians? You're running a Guardian deck?" Ben wasn't sure if he should laugh or call a psychiatrist. "Guardians are the most useless cards in the entire game! You might as well be running Arcana Force or Dark Scorpions."
There was a lot of murmuring in the crowd as students discussed what Ben just said. Amir, who had been excited to see his boyfriend duel for the first time, was worried, though. He knew Simon pretty well, they were both part of West Academy's film club, and he knew the secret to their strategy. He just wished he could tell Ben about it...
"You gonna end your turn or what?" Simon asked, fixing their hair. Ben nodded and set a card. "Good! That means I can finally get my strategy going."
"I activate two copies of Reckless Greed!" Both of Simon's set cards lifted. "So I get to draw 4 cards, but I have to skip my next 2 draw phases. And I've got just the cards I need!"
"Since my field is empty, I can special summon Backup Guardian from my hand!" A muscular, purple skinned demon with a mane of red hair suddenly appeared on the field, squatting in defense mode (DEF 2200) The monster flexed, and Ben could see its many muscles were covered in tattoos depicting various weapons. A dagger, a bow, a pair of crossed swords, etc.
"Woah..." Ben said, ogling the monster. He quickly reminded himself that he had a boyfriend now, and shouldn't be looking at trading cards like that. "Uh, so what's he do?"
"You'll find out! But first, I'm gonna summon another monster. Guardian Blacksmith Kotetsu!" There was a burst of flames, and a new, much more human looking monster appeared. This one was a potbellied man wearing a brightly colored blacksmith's vest, and wielding a hammer in one hand (ATK 1500) "His effect lets me add a Guardian equip spell to my hand."
"Now I'm going to activate three of them! Guardian Dagger Elma, Guardian Flamberge Baou, and Guardian Starbow Ceal!" A green dagger with a butterfly wing-shaped hilt appeared in Kotetsu's hand, then a black sword with a serrated blade impaled Alien Astronaut, and a shimmering arrow pierced Alien Shocktrooper in the chest (ATK 1800) (ATK 1500) (ATK 900)
"What did you do to my monsters?!" Ben gasped, watching his two Aliens groan and weaken significantly.
"These Guardian weapons have two different effects, depending on whether they're equipped to my monster or yours. My monsters gain ATK, while your monsters each lose 1000 and can't activate their effects!" Simon pointed dramatically. "You're dealing with all new, way more powerful Guardians!"
"Kotetsu, attack Alien Shocktrooper!" The blacksmith ran forward and sliced the Reptile across the chest with his new dagger, shattering him. Ben spotted an Action Card sticking out from underneath a hunk of rock candy, and grabbed it. "Now two things happen! First, when a monster wielding a Guardian weapon is destroyed, I can summon its true master from my Extra Deck!"
"Transformation Summon! Guardian Soul Ceal!" A wolf-like monster in scarlet armor, with massive wings and a long tail, suddenly burst out of the ground, roaring ferociously (ATK 1700) "When a Guardian Soul is summoned, they equip themselves with their weapon from the graveyard." The Starbow appeared in Ceal's hand, and its attack points increased to 2700.
"And, when a monster wielding Guardian Dagger Elma deals you damage, I can return a card to your hand! Like your Code A Ancient Ruins!"
"I activate my Action Card, Sticky Sweets!" Piles of sticky pink bubblegum began covering the tiny pyramid on Ben's field, before being blasted away by a laser from Guardian Dagger Elma. "For the rest of this turn, cards can't be returned to the hand!"
"How convenient..." Simon shrugged, then gestured for Ceal to attack. The Pyro drew its bow back and fired a glowing arrow at Alien Astronaut. "Now I get to activate Ceal's effect, so you have to shuffle one card in your hand back into your deck."
Ben frowned and placed Brainwashing Beam on top of his deck, hitting the shuffle button on his Duel Disk. "Alien Astronaut's effect activates, I get to add a card that relates to A Counters from my deck to my hand."
"And I get to summon Guardian Soul Baou!" There was a burst of flames, and out stepped a purple skinned Fiend with pointy ears and long blonde hair, wearing pitch black armor and a red cape. Guardian Flamberge Baou quickly appeared in his hands (ATK 2000) "Attack directly!"
The new Guardian flew forward and slashed at Ben's middle with its sword, knocking him over. "Ow! Jesus! Why'd you have to aim there?"
"I chain "A" Cell Recombination Device!" Ben quickly hit a button on his Duel Disk, his set card lifting up. "Now I send an Alien from my deck to the grave, and place counters on one of your monsters equal to its level. So I pick Alien Stealthbuster, and place 4 A Counters on Guardian Soul Ceal."
Four ugly purple blobs shot out of his card and latched onto the Pyro, which roared in irritation. "I should mention, when Alien Stealthbuster goes to the graveyard, I get to place 2 A Counters on any card on the field." Two more blobs appeared on Guardian Soul Baou, who didn't react.
"I'll just set this face down and end my turn." Simon said.
(BLP 3900) - (SLP 5500)
Ben struggled to stand up, groaning and catching his breath. "Okay, Simon, I gotta admit, your deck is pretty awesome. Where'd you get these cards, anyways?"
"I won them!" Simon explained. "So you know the most famous user of the Guardian cards, Rafael? He fought the original King of Games a long time ago, but eventually came to the good guys' side. Well he had a kid, and his kid had a kid, and eventually someone in his family ended up working for Industrial Illusions. And that descendant wanted to honor his memories by rebooting the Guardians and making them, you know, actually usable."
"So Industrial Illusions made a brand new Guardian archetype and offered them as the grand prize for a huge tournament... in Ottawa, for some reason." Simon gestured to a Canadian flag pin on their House Fusion jacket. "I entered the tournament and won the whole thing. And my dream is to become King of Games one day, with this deck."
"For a second there, I thought you were gonna say that you were related to Rafael." Ben said, impressed by the story.
"Nah, I'm definitely not, I checked. But how cool would that be?" Simon laughed. "Anyways, it's your turn, don't forget."
"Right." Ben drew a card and paused for a second. He had several effects he could activate right now, but wasn't sure how helpful they would be. "I'll start by activating Code A Ancient Ruins' effect. It gains an A Counter whenever one of my Aliens is destroyed, so now I can remove both of them to revive Alien Telepath!"
The catfish-like Alien reappeared, waving its whiskers aggressively (ATK 1600)
"I also activate the effects of Alien Stealthbuster and A Cell Recombination Device from my graveyard! I banish the first one to destroy Guardian Baou, and the second to add an Alien monster to my hand."
Baou's eyes widened as the A Counters on his chest rapidly expanded and then exploded, leaving purple goo everywhere. "Ewww, that was graphic." Simon grimaced, shaking their leg to get rid of the holographic slime... before remembering it was a hologram. It faded away in a matter of seconds.
"I activate Alien Telepath's effect! I can remove 1 A Counter from anywhere on the field to destroy one of your spell or trap cards, like Guardian Dagger Elma!" The catfish-like alien fired a blast of red energy at the dagger, shattering it. "And I'm guessing that means you can't summon its Guardian monster?"
Simon quickly activated their set card. "Normally, yes. But thankfully I have a trap card! Emergence of the Guardians lets me pay 1000 life points and tribute a monster I control to summon Guardian Soul Elma from my extra deck!"
Backup Guardian vanished, and a new Guardian monster descended from above. She was much more human looking than the other Guardians, with bright red hair and pale skin, as well as pointed ears. She wore a very revealing outfit, consisting just of a red skirt and a green top that looked like a butterfly. (DEF 1200)
"I summon Alien Glider!" Ben continued his turn. A small, manta ray-like alien with long tentacles and a flat body flew onto the field (ATK 0) "And it's a tuner monster! So I can tune my level 3 Glider with level 4 Telepath in order to Synchro Summon!"
"Clustering stars unite and form a monster from beyond the mysterious beyond! Synchro Summon, Alien Venus!" The Synchro rings and stars appeared again, before exploding into a shower of light. A new Alien stood before Ben, this one centaur-ish, similar to Shocktrooper, only much larger, and with a red body. The top half of its body was vaguely feminine, and its head was shaped like a crown (ATK 2600)
"First, when Alien Glider is used for a Synchro Summon, I get to draw 1 card. And second, when Alien Venus is summoned, she puts an A Counter on every monster you have!" Ben drew one card, as Alien Venus opened her mouth, which segmented into three parts like some kind of horrifying deep sea creature. She vomited up three purple orbs, which latched onto Simon's Guardians.
Simon grimaced, looking around for an Action Card. "Attack Guardian Soul Ceal!" The A Counters on the wolf-like Pyro's chest began to expand, lowering his ATK to only 1500. Venus's lamprey mouth opened again, and she began breathing fire, destroying the other monster.
"Wow, that was graphic..." Ben said, setting a card. "Uh, your move, I guess."
(BLP 3900) - (SLP 3400)
Simon's draw phase was skipped, and they had 5 cards in their hand (including an Action Spell they picked up the last turn but were unable to use). "I set one monster, and then activate Kotetsu's effect again. I add Guardian Celestial Sword Eatos to my hand!"
"Now I activate my action spell, Sugar Crash! Your monster loses her effects for the rest of this turn!" A giant blue piece of candy suddenly appeared, Alien Venus leaning forward to take a bite. As soon as she did, it exploded, covering her in white sugar and leaving her dazed and confused. Her giant alien eyes literally turned into cartoon spirals.
"Man, how do they come up with this stuff?" Ben wondered. "So how is that gonna help you?"
"It means she can't lower my monster's scores any more." Simon played the card they had searched for. A shimmering longsword appeared in Guardian Blacksmith Kotetsu's hand, raising his ATK to 2000. "I activate my sword's effect, once per turn I can banish a monster from your graveyard and boost my monster's ATK by 500!"
A transparent version of Alien Telepath briefly hovered over Ben's field, before being sucked into the Celestial Sword (ATK 2500) "Attack Alien Venus!" The blacksmith raised his sword and charged, but was still obliterated. Simon grunted, but hit a button on their duel disk.
"Transformation Summon! Guardian Soul Eatos!" An angel descended onto the field, with massive white wings and a stereotypical Native American dress. The Celestial Sword reappeared and she held it up to the sky (ATK 3000)
"Attack Alien Venus!" Eatos raised her sword and sliced the Reptile in two. "I have to end my turn there."
"My turn, draw!" Ben was starting to work up a sweat. Action Duels were one thing, but an Action Duel against cards you'd never seen before, and don't understand the effects of? That was a nightmare.
"I activate Corruption Cell A! It puts an A Counter on one of your monsters. Short, sweet and to the point." A purple orb shot out of the spell and latched onto Guardian Soul Eatos, who looked annoyed. "Now I activate Forbidden Alien Experimentation!"
The familiar Synchro rings and stars appeared above Ben's head, but their colors were inverted. "It costs 1000 life points, but I get to Synchro Summon an Alien monster by banishing Reptiles from my graveyard! So I banish Alien Glider and Venus in order to summon my most powerful monster!"
"Over the moon and past the stars, here comes the leader of the interstellar armies! Synchro Summon! Alien Invader!" The Synchro rings exploded, revealing a muscular, silvery skinned Alien that stood head and shoulders taller than Ben. He, assuming it was a he, was much more human-shaped than the other Aliens, although his head and back were covered in tentacles. (ATK 2900)
"When Alien Invader is synchro summoned, all monsters with A Counters are destroyed, then he gains 300 ATK for each one!" The two Guardian monsters gasped as the A Counters on them expanded rapidly and then exploded, leaving Simon's field empty. (ATK 3500)
Simon laughed and pulled a card out of their Duel Disk. "Since you just destroyed Guardian Soul Eatos, I can summon her evil twin from my extra deck. Transformation Summon! Guardian Soul Dreadscythe!"
Black feathers rained down on the field, and a clawed hand burst out of the ground. A new monster rose up, a feminine humanoid covered in bandages and wearing leather armor. She had a blank white mask covering her face and long, messy brown hair. She stretched out her hand and a wicked looking scythe appeared in.
"When Dreadscythe is summoned, I can equip her with Guardian Reaper Scythe from my deck, and then she gains 500 points for every monster in both our graveyards!" Dreadscythe's attack points rose to 7500, and she gripped the scythe with both hands, pointing the blade at Ben.
The Mexican duelist gulped and set a monster to his field. "Uh... guess I have to end my turn." He turned around and bolted, desperately searching for an Action Card.
(BLP 2500) - (SLP 3000)
Simon had to skip their draw phase, and simply looked at the three cards in their hand. "Well, this has been fun, Ben! Too bad it's got to end now."
"I flip up my Morphing Jar! So we both discard our hands and draw five cards." Both duelists did just that. "Perfect! I activate Twin Twisters, I just discard one card and both your spell and trap cards are destroyed!"
Code A Ancient Ruins and Ben's set Planet Pollutant Virus shattered. Guardian Dreadscythe's ATK rose to 9000. Ben was grateful that the new model of duel disk automatically sent cards to the discard pile, he still hadn't found an action card.
Then he spotted one, floating in the chocolate milk river. He jumped in and grabbed it, causing the holograms to glitch out for a second. "Man am I glad this isn't real..." Ben sighed, standing up just in time to notice the evil Guardian attacking Alien Invader with its scythe.
"I activate Impossible Luck!" A glowing golden aura surrounded Ben, as his life points began dramatically dropping. "Since this attack would lower my life points to 0, they become 100 instead, and I don't take any more damage for the rest of this turn!"
Simon pursed their lips and set a card. "So you get one more turn. Good luck, big guy, because my Dreadscythe has over 9000 attack points, and she can't be destroyed by card effects."
They nodded to signify the end of their turn. Ben drew a card and took a second to breathe, trying to form a plan. Okay, Ben, don't freak out... Sure, their monster is stronger than a Five Headed Dragon, and all you've got is Alien Grey, but pro duelists face odds like this all the time... Right?
He tapped his duel disk, looking at all the cards on the field. I wonder... Ben read the text for Guardian Reaper Scythe carefully, and realized he had everything he needed.
"I flip summon Alien Grey!" Ben's face down monster popped up, a scrawny grey Alien with an overly large head and long, noodley fingers. (ATK 300) "His effect places one A Counter on your big, bad fusion monster!" A glowing purple orb stuck itself onto Guardian Dreadscythe's mask, which did not make her look any less intimidating.
"Now I activate Monster Reborn! So welcome back, Alien Astronaut!" The mechsuitted Alien reappeared, laser guns ready. (ATK 2500) "I'm not gonna bother using his effect, I'm just attacking. Intergalactic Phaser Laser!"
Alien Astronaut fired, blowing Morphing Jar to pieces. "I chain an action card, Hard Candy! This cuts the damage in half!" A semi-transparent, caramel colored candy shell appeared around the Canadian duelist, shielding them from most of the blast.
"I set two cards and end my turn!" Ben said, looking confident. He stared into the crowd, which was still covered by the Action Field. I hope you're watching, baby...
(BLP 100) - (SLP 2100)
Simon drew a card, but before they could say anything, one of Ben's set cards lifted. "I activate Dust Tornado to destroy Guardian Reaper Scythe!" A whirlwind whipped across the field, shattering the Guardian weapon. Simon let out a cry of shock as their monster's ATK returned to 2500.
"Guess I really did need this card..." They sighed, playing the one they had just drawn. "I equip Alien Astronaut with Guardian Silence Rod Kay'est, which lowers his ATK by 500 and negates his effects, just in case your facedown is another Recombination Device."
A long, blue staff topped with a round gemstone appeared in Alien Astronaut's hands, which was clearly weighing him down (ATK 2000)
"Now attack Alien Grey and end this duel!" Guardian Dreadscythe, lacking a weapon, simply balled up her fists and charged forward. But she was stopped dead in her tracks by a glowing green forcefield. "What now?!"
"I activate my trap, Alien Forcefield Generator! Since your monster has an A Counter, this negates her attack and deals you damage equal to her attack points!" Ben explained, as the forcefield expanded and then exploded in a burst of green light.
When the light faded, Simon was laying on their back, groaning, and Madolche Chateau had faded.
(BLP 100) - (SLP 0)
"Yes, I won!" Ben cheered, punching the air excitedly. He grinned like an idiot and went to held his opponent back to their feet. "Hey, great game!"
"Thanks, man." Simon stood up and gathered their cards. "That was really fun! I can see why Amir is so head over heels for you."
Right as they said that, the Arab boy ran in from the stands and tackled his boyfriend, hugging him tightly. "You were so cool out there!" Amir said, kissing Ben repeatedly. The Mexican duelist laughed, blushing heavily.
"I'm glad you think so!" Ben wrapped his arms around the smaller boy, kissing him back. "Sorry I couldn't give the duel a flashy finish, burn damage feels kind of anticlimactic."
"I don't care about that, silly." Amir said, resting his head on his boyfriend's shoulder. "I just liked seeing you duel!"
"I hate to interrupt this tender moment, but class is still in session." Professor Kinley said, staring at the two boys irritably. The couple both turned red and sheepishly made their way back to their seats.
As their professor rambled on about strategy in Action Duels, Ben sneakily sent a text message to Amir through his duel disk. Thanks for the support, baby, I love you
